Safety is a combination of using common sense, staying alert, and knowing how your Vacuum Cleaner ("Vac") works.
Safety Signal Words
DANGER: Indicates a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury.
WARNING: Indicates a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury.
CAUTION: Indicates a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in minor or moderate injury or property damage.
When using your Vac, always follow basic safety precautions including the following:
WARNING:
- To reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, or injury:
- Read and understand this manual and all labels on the Vac before operating.
• Use only as described in this manual. - This vacuum is intended to pick up COLD ash from fireplaces, grills, ovens, ashtrays, etc.
have cooled, but may actually be hot inside. First check for hot spots by raking through the ashes/coals. Air flow created during vacuuming may cause hot ash to reignite. As you vacuum, constantly check the nozzle, hose, drum, and motor for excessive temperatures.
- If you notice an increase in temperature, turn off the vacuum immediately.
- Unplug the vacuum and remove the vacuumed material from the drum.
- The drum must be emptied and cleaned after each use, and before picking up other household debris.
- Do not use paper dust bags.

gasoline or other fuels, lighter fluid, cleaners, oil-based paints, natural gas, coal dust, magnesium dust, grain dust, aluminum dust, or gun powder.
- Do not vacuum anything that is burning or smoking, such as cigarettes, matches, or hot ashes.
- To avoid the risk of self-ignition of drum debris, empty drum after each use. Combustible materials, such as rags or sawdust containing stain or urethane, can be sources of such overheating.
- Do not vacuum drywall dust and fine powders.
- Do not use with a standard filter (VF3400). Only use with RIDGID Filters: VF3500, VF3600 and VF3800.
- To reduce the risk of inhaling toxic vapors, do not vacuum or use near toxic or hazardous materials.
- To reduce the risk of electric shock, do not expose to rain or allow liquid to enter motor compartment. Store indoors.
- This Vac is not intended for use by persons (including children) with reduced physical, sensory, or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, unless they have been given supervision or instruction concerning use of the appliance by a person responsible for their safety.
- Do not allow to be used as a toy. Close attention is necessary when used by or near children.
- Do not use with a torn filter or without filter, dry debris ingested by the impeller may damage the motor or be exhausted into the air.
Use caution when vacuuming materials that appear to Turn off Vac before unplugging.
- To reduce the risk of injury from accidental starting, unplug power cord before changing or cleaning filters.
- Do not unplug by pulling on cord. To unplug, grasp the plug, not the cord.
- Do not use with damaged cord, plug or other parts. If your Vac is not working as it should, has missing parts, has been dropped, damaged, left outdoors, or dropped into water, call customer service.
- Do not pull or carry by cord, use cord as handle, close a door on cord, or pull cord around sharp edges or corners. Do not run Vac over cord. Keep cord away from heated

- Do not handle plug, switch, or the Vac with wet hands.
- Use only extension cords that are rated for outdoor use. Extension cords in poor condition or too small in wire size can pose fire and shock hazards. To reduce the risk of these hazards, be sure the cord is in good condition and that liquid does not contact the connection. Do not use an extension cord with conductors smaller than 1,3 mm ^2 (16 AWG).
- This Vac is double-insulated, eliminating the need for a separate grounding system. Use only identical replacement parts. Read the instructions for Servicing Double-Insulated Vacs before servicing.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
- Do not put any object into ventilation openings. Do not vacuum with any ventilation openings blocked; keep free of dust, lint, hair or anything that may reduce air flow.
- Keep hair, loose clothing, fingers, and all parts of body away from openings and moving parts.
- To reduce the risk of falls, use extra care when cleaning on stairs.
- To reduce the risk of back injury or falls, do not lift a Vac that is heavy with debris. Partially empty by scooping debris.
- To reduce the risk of personal injury or damage to the Vac, use only RIDGID accessories supplied with this vacuum. Other RIDGID accessories are not manufactured for use in fireplaces, wood stoves, pellet stoves, grills and more.
- To reduce the risk of eye injury, wear safety eyewear. The operation of any utility Vac can result in foreign objects being blown into the eyes, which can result in severe eye damage.
- To reduce the risk of being struck by, or pulled down by, a rolling Vac, block the casters when using on any uneven or sloped surface.
CAUTION:
- To reduce the risk of hearing damage, wear ear protectors when using for extended hours or in a noisy area.
- For dusty operations, wear dust mask.
- Static shocks are common when the relative humidity of the air is low. Vacuuming fine debris with your Vac can deposit static charge on the hose or Vac. To reduce the frequency of static shocks in your home or when using this Vac, add moisture to the air with a humidifier.
Observe the following warnings that appear on the motor housing of your Vac:

For your own safety, never connect plug to power source outlet until all assembly steps are complete and you have read and understood the safety and operation instructions. Do not operate Vac with any parts damaged or missing.
CASTER ASSEMBLY (Fig. 2)
NOTE: Remove Powerhead Assembly (A) from Dust Drum (B) prior to assembly of Casters (F). Locate the Casters in loose parts bag.
- Turn the Dust Drum (B) upside down on the floor.
- Insert the Caster Stem into the Socket of the Accessory Caddy, as shown.
- Push on the Caster (F) until the Ball on the Caster Stem is inserted all the way into the Socket. You will hear the Ball snap into the Socket and the Caster will swivel easily when positioning is correct.
- Repeat for remaining Three Casters (F).
- Turn the Drum upright.

- Set the vacuum upright on its casters. Place the Drum Filter (I) inside the Dust Drum (B) and ensure the gasket of the Drum Filter (I) is fitted around the top rounded edge of the Dust Drum (B).
- Align the front of the Powerhead Assembly (A) with the Vac Inlet Port located on the front of the Dust Drum (B), as shown.
- Place the Powerhead Assembly (A) on top of the Dust Drum (B).
- Ensure the Powerhead Assembly (A) completely covers the top of the Dust Drum (B) so leakage does not occur.
- Rotate the Drum Latches up and over the Powerhead Assembly Hooks to engage the Two Latches.
- To remove the Powerhead Assembly, reverse the above directions.

CARRY HANDLE/POWER CORD WRAP ASSEMBLY (Fig. 4)
- Locate the Carry Handle/Power Cord Wrap (C) and the Two #10 x 3/4" Pan Head Screws (D) in loose parts bag.
- Position the Carry Handle/Power Cord Wrap (C) on top of the Powerhead Assembly (A), as shown.
- Insert a #10 x 3/4" Pan Head Screw (D) through the Hole at each end of the Carry Handle/Power Cord Wrap (C) and into the Powerhead Assembly (A). Tighten securely.

- To Insert Hose: Locate the end of the Locking Hose (E) and align it with the Vac Inlet Port. Push the Hose cuff straight into the Vac Inlet Port until it snaps into place.
- To Remove Hose: Press the Hose Locking Tab and pull the Locking Hose end straight out of the Vac Inlet Port.

⚠ WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire, explosion, or damage to Vac:
- Do not leave Vac running while unattended - you may fail to notice important signs indicating abnormal operation such as loss of suction, debris exiting the exhaust, or abnormal motor noises. Immediately stop using Vac if you notice these signs.
- Do not leave Vac plugged in when not in use.
- Do not continue operating the vacuum if the hose or tools become blocked with debris, turn the vacuum off and immediately clear the blockage.
- Sparks inside the motor can ignite airborne flammables. Do not operate Vac near flammable liquids or in areas with flammable gases, vapors, or explosive/airborne dust. Flammable liquids, gases, and vapors include: lighter fluid, solvent-type cleaners, oil-based paints, gasoline, alcohol, and aerosol sprays. Explosive dusts include: coal, magnesium, aluminum, grain, and gun powder.
- Do not vacuum up explosive dusts, flammable liquids, or hot ashes.
- Do not leave sawdust or rags with stain or polyurethane residue inside Vac. Empty drum after picking up these potentially self-heating materials.

- Do not expose to rain or allow liquid to enter Vac or motor compartment. Store indoors.
- Do not handle plug, switch, or Vac with wet hands.
- Unplug Vac before servicing. If your Vac is not working as it should, has missing parts, has been dropped, damaged, left outdoors, or dropped into water, call customer service.
- When using an extension cord, use only outdoor-rated cords that are in good condition. Do not allow the connection to come into contact with liquid.
CAUTION:
To reduce the risk of hearing damage, wear ear protectors when using the Vac y area.
POLARIZED PLUG / ON-OFF SWITCH (Fig. 6)
To reduce the risk of electric shock, this Vac has a Polarized Plug (one blade is wider than the other). This Plug will fit in a Polarized Outlet only one way. If the Plug does not fit fully in the Outlet, reverse the Plug. If it still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician to install the proper Outlet. Do not change the Plug in any way.
With Power Cord plugged in, turn the Vac "ON" by pressing in on the "I" (top) on the Power Switch. To turn "OFF", press the "O" (bottom) on the Power Switch. The symbols used on the Switch Actuator are international "ON & OFF" symbols.

- The dry Qwik Lock Filter (J) and Drum Filter (I) must always be in the correct position at all times to avoid leaks and possible damage to Vac.
NOTE: A dry Qwik Lock Filter (J) must be used with the Drum Filter (I).
- When using your Vac to pick up very fine cold ash, it will be necessary for you to empty the Dust Drum (B) after each use and clean the Drum Filter (I) and Qwik Lock Filter (J) at more frequent intervals to maintain peak Vac performance.
NOTE: A dry Filter is necessary to pick up dry material.
WARNING:
Do not use without all filters installed or with a torn filter. Dry drum filter (VF3500) must be used within the drum filter (VFA0500). Immediately empty the drum contents after each use. Combustion of ash may occur if not emptied.

WARNING:
To reduce the risk of injury from accidental starting, unplug power cord before emptying the drum.
- Unplug Power Cord from power source.
- Remove the Powerhead Assembly (A) by rotating the Drum Latches up and over the Powerhead Assembly Hooks, as shown below.
- Lift Powerhead Assembly (A) and Drum Filter (I) from the Dust Drum (B) and set aside.
- Empty Dust Drum (B) into a proper waste disposal container.
- The Dust Drum (B) must be emptied and cleaned before storing your Vac.

WARNING:
To reduce the risk of back injury or falls, do not lift a Vac heavy with debris. Scoop enough contents out to make the Vac light enough to lift comfortably.

NOTE: Do not pick up the Vac by lifting on the Latch Handles located on the side of the Dust Drum.
- Should it become necessary to pick the Vac up to move it: Pick up an EMPTY Dust Drum (B) by the Dust Drum and Accessory Caddy ONLY.
NOTE: DO NOT pick the Vac up by the Carry Handle/Power Cord Wrap unless the Dust Drum is EMPTY. To avoid dropping the Vac, due to latches releasing or possible part breakage, pick the Vac up by the Dust Drum.
- To maneuver the Vac: The Carry Handle/Power Cord Wrap (C) on top of the Powerhead Assembly (A) can be used.

CAUTION:

STORAGE
When vacuuming is complete, your RIDGID Vac has convenient storage locations.
ACCESSORY STORAGE (Fig. 10)
- For Onboard Storage: Slide the Extension Wand (G) and the Crevice Tool (H) onto the Accessory Caddy Foot Posts.
- To Remove Wand and Accessory: To remove from Caster Foot Post, lightly rotate and pull Accessory upward.
CORD STORAGE (Fig. 11)
- To Store Cord: Wrap the Power Cord around the Powerhead Carry Handle/Power Cord Wrap (C) beneath the Two Tabs.
- Secure the Power Cord using the Cord Clip on the Polarized Plug.
HOSE STORAGE (Fig. 11)
- The Locking Hose (E) may be stored by inserting the open Hose end into the Vac Inlet Port and the other accessory end of Hose into the Accessory Caddy Foot Post, as shown.
WARNING:
Do not put any object into ventilation openings. Do not vacuum with any ventilation openings blocked; keep free of dust, lint, hair or anything that may reduce air flow.
CAUTION:
Do not operate vacuum while the hose is wrapped around the powerhead assembly.

QWIK LOCK FILTER
WARNING:
To reduce the risk of injury from accidental starting, unplug power cord before changing or cleaning filter.
NOTE: The Qwik Lock Filter (J) is made of high quality paper designed to stop small particles of cold ash or other fine debris. The Filter should be used for dry pickup only. Handle the Filter carefully when removing or installing it. Creases in the Filter Pleats may occur from installation but will not affect the performance of the Filter.
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION OF THE QWIK LOCK FILTER (Fig. 12)
- To Remove Filter: Place fingers under the Two Filter Tabs.
- While pressing down with one thumb on the Qwik Lock Stud, that protrudes through the center of the Filter Plate, lift up on the Tabs until Filter releases.
- Slide Filter off Filter Cage. The Filter Cage should not be removed.
IMPORTANT: To avoid Blower Wheel and Motor Damage always reinstall both Filter before using Vac for dry pickup.
- To Install Filter: Slide the Qwik Lock Filter (J) over the Filter Cage while aligning the Qwik Lock Stud on the Filter Cage with the center hole in the Qwik Lock Integrated Filter Plate.
- Make sure the Rubber Gasket at the bottom of the Qwik Lock Filter (J) seats around the base of the Filter Cage.
- Firmly press the Qwik Lock Integrated Filter Plate down around the Qwik Lock Stud until it snaps into place.
NOTE: Failure to properly seat the bottom Gasket and Integrated Filter Plate to the Filter Cage could result in debris bypassing the Filter.
Your Filter should be cleaned often to maintain peak Vac performance.
WARNING:
Do not operate without filters and filter cage as it prevents debris from entering the impeller and damaging the motor.

All disassembly and repairs should be performed by qualified personnel

- Some removal of dry debris can be accomplished without removing the Filter from the Vac. Slap your hand on top of the Lid while the Vac is turned OFF.
- For best cleaning results due to accumulated dust, clean the Filter outdoors in an open area.
- After Filter removal from Vac, remove the dry debris by gently tapping Filter against the inside wall of your Dust Drum. The debris will loosen and fall.
- For thorough cleaning of Dry Filter with fine dust (no debris) and after filter is removed from the Vac, run water through the Filter from a hose or spigot. Take care that water pressure from the hose is not strong enough to damage Filter.
IMPORTANT: After cleaning, check the Filter for tears or small holes. Do not use a Filter with holes or tears in it. Even a small hole can allow dust to come out of your Vac. Replace it immediately.
Allow the Filter to dry completely before reinstalling and storing the Vac or picking up dry debris.
MAINTENANCE
DRUM FILTER

WARNING:
To reduce the risk of injury from accidental starting, unplug power cord before changing or cleaning filter.
NOTE: The Drum Filter (I) is designed specifically to stop fine dust and ash from entering the Qwik Lock Filter and motor. Please take care when handling the Drum Filter (I) when removing to clean or install. Creases in the fabric may occur from installation but will not affect filtration performance.
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION OF THE DRUM FILTER (Fig. 13)
- To Remove Filter: Place fingers under the rubber gasket along the Dust Drum rim.
- Gently lift Drum Filter (I) from the Dust Drum (B) and set the Drum Filter (I) aside in an open area.
IMPORTANT: To avoid Blower Wheel and Motor Damage always reinstall Filter before using Vac for dry pickup.
- To Install Filter: Carefully set the Drum Filter (I) inside the Dust Drum (B) so the rubber gasket rests evenly along the rim of the Dust Drum.
- Press down along the rim of the Dust Drum to make sure the gasket fits securely. Adjust as needed to ensure there are no gaps between the Drum Filter (I) and the Dust Drum (B).
NOTE: Failure to properly seal the Gasket and Filter inside the Dust Drum could result in debris bypassing the Filter.
Your Filter should be cleaned often to maintain peak Vac performance.

WARNING:
Do not operate without filter cage as it prevents debris from entering the impeller and damaging the motor.

- Carefully remove the Drum Filter (I) from the Dust Drum (B) and gently tap the Filter's interior and lightly brush the outside of the Drum Filter (I) in an open area.
- For best results due to accumulated debris, clean the Drum Filter (I) outdoors in an open area.
- For thorough cleaning of the Drum Filter and after filter is removed from the Vac, run water through the Drum Filter from a hose or spigot. Take care that water pressure from the hose is not strong enough to damage Filter.
IMPORTANT: After cleaning, check the Filter for tears or small holes. Do not use a Filter with holes or tears in it. Even a small hole can allow dust to come out of your Vac. Replace it immediately.
Allow the Drum Filter to dry completely before reinstalling and storing the Vac or picking up dry debris.

SERVICING OF DOUBLE-INSULATED VAC
In a double-insulated Vac, two systems of insulation are provided instead of grounding. No grounding means is provided on a double-insulated appliance, nor should a means for grounding be added. Servicing a double-insulated Vac requires extreme care and knowledge of the system, and should be done only by qualified service personnel. Replacement parts for a double-insulated Vac must be identical to the parts they replace. Your double-insulated Vac is marked with the words "DOUBLE INSULATED" and the symbol (square within a square) may also be marked on the appliance.
