Congratulations!
Congratulations for buying the X-Edge corner filter.
The sera X-Edge 300, 450, 700 corner filters are efficient aquarium internal filters for small to medium sized freshwater aquariums that can be placed unobtrusively in the corner of an aquarium. The energy saving motor is not only mostly maintenance free but also very quiet due to its noise dampening and attachment at the aquarium glass. The actual filter body is attached to the filter head. The filter materials inserted in it clarify the water in a physical and biological manner, and thus ensure crystal clear aquarium water. Quick and full cleaning of the filter and its components is very easy to do due to its construction.
Warning!
- Children should be supervised to ensure that they do not play with the appliance. The operation of children under 8 years is not allowed.
-
The appliance can be used by children above 8 years as well as by persons with reduced physical, sensory or mental capacities, or lack of experience and/or knowledge, if they have been given supervision or instruction concerning use of the appliance and have understood the dangers arising thereof. Children must not play with the appliance, its accessories and packaging. Cleaning and user maintenance must not be carried out by children unless they are above 8 years old and under supervision. Keep the appliance and its cables, accessories and packaging materials out of the reach of children below 8 years of age.
-
If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by the manufacturer, its service agent or similarly qualified persons in order to avoid a hazard.
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
- The filter must be placed entirely underneath the water surface as to prevent running dry and subsequent motor damages. Never operate it dry or without sufficient water flow. Check the water level regularly. Top up the aquarium sufficiently with water before being absent for a longer time.
- Operation is permitted only in freshwater aquariums in closed temperate rooms.
- Always protect the mains plug against moisture and form a drip loop that prevents water from running along the cable into the mains socket.
- Check plug and socket for water being present before putting into operation. Never touch the plug or the socket before switching off the circuit in case of a wet plug or a wet socket.
- Never pull the power plug out of the socket by the cable.
-
Before all work at the X-Edge corner filter or in the aquarium, disconnect all electrical appliances located in the water from the mains supply.
-
The X-Edge corner filter may only be operated completely assembled.
- The filter must not be operated without filter media for mechanical filtration (mat, sponge).
- Operation is permitted only for the described application purpose.
- The water temperature must not exceed 35^ C ( 95^ F).
- Damage of the motor, the cable or the plug must not be repaired or mended! In this case the filter must immediately be disconnected from mains supply, and must not be operated any more. This also applies in case of intended alterations of these parts.
- The circuit to which the X-Edge corner filter is connected must be protected with a fault current protection switch (RCD 30 mA).
- Do not install the filter upside down.
- Do not expose the appliance to damage by frost.
- Product contains magnetic and electromagnetic components that may affect or damage magnetic fields. People wearing cardiac pacemakers should keep the required safety distance according to the cardiac pacemaker manuals.
- The air injector must remain locked (insert plug or close adjustment wheel at the air intake), when the filter is operated with the spray bar. Otherwise there is a risk of water spilling out of the air hose.
Application ranges
These filters are exclusively designed as internal filter, depending on stock density, for freshwater aquariums up to 100 liters (26 US gal.) (X-Edge 300), 200 liters (53 US gal.) (X-Edge 450) or 300 liters (79 US gal.) (X-Edge 700) in indoor areas.

Operation
Separating the filter from the mains supply
The corner filter can be switched off by pulling the mains plug.
Assembly and installation in the aquarium
Step 1: Filling in filter media
The filter is already filled with filter media and immediately ready for use upon purchase (1).
Step 2: Positioning
The sera X-Edge 300, 450, 700 are exclusively installed in a corner of the aquarium.
Please note that the filter must be submerged completely in the water for preventing it from running dry, which would damage the motor (not a guaranty case!). The best installation height is usually 2 – 3 cm (0.8 – 1.2 in.) underneath the water surface (2). This ensures good gas exchange due to increased surface current and, consequently, optimal oxygen transfer into the aquarium water.
Press the filled filter with the holder plate attached to it vertically in the chosen pre-cleaned corner of the aquarium. The suction cups cannot hold properly when algae or similar periphyton grow on the glass. In that case possibly use a blade cleaner for cleaning the installation location first. The holder plate has 4 suction cups and immediately attaches to the aquarium glass. If you should wish to install the filter in a not yet filled aquarium, you should at least moisten the suction cups so these will attach to the glass. Hold the filter from below in an inclined position and hook the filter head with its gap on the back into the holder. Now lean the filter against the corner of the aquarium until the holder snaps in. Now the corner stripe touches the silicone joint of the aquarium (3). Removing and inserting the filter from or into the holder requires some space and should be considered when setting up the aquarium.
Step 3: Pushing on the outlet options
Choose the correct outlet type for your aquarium. The spray bar produces a directed current (4), the duck beak nozzle rather a soft volume current (5). The air set can only be used in combination with the duck beak nozzle (13), otherwise the plug must be pushed into the air intake opening. The spray bar or the duck beak nozzle are simply pushed into the outlet opening of the corner filter. Now you can turn the chosen outlet option into the desired position. Connect the power supply only when the filter is positioned and installed correctly. Check whether the achieved effect meets your desires and possibly readjust the current.
Step 4: Start and adjusting the flow rate
When the filter is submerged it can be switched on by connecting the mains plug. Turning the adjustment knob (6) allows adjusting the flow rate accordingly.

Maintenance and cleaning
Cleaning (every 2 weeks)
Switch the sera X-Edge corner filter off by pulling the mains plug. Grab underneath the filter body and pull the filter casing upward towards you until the filter is released from the holder with a click. Now you can separate the filter casing from the motor part (7) by gentle pressure and take it out of the aquarium for cleaning.
Remove the front cover with grid from the filter casing. You can now take the filter mat out of the holder for cleaning or replacing it (8). Remove the filter basket and the filter sponge from the filter casing (9) and clean it under running water or, even better, in a bucket with aquarium water which is being disposed of anyway after the water change.
The filter mat insert only fits into the front cover with grid in one direction. Please note the triangle mark on the intake grid that marks the snap-in location of the little hinge of the filter mat insert (10).
If you only wish to clean or replace the mat you can remove the intake grid from the filter body under water and remove the mat from it (11) after having switched off the filter. Pay attention to the correct position of the mat insert and the intake grid during assembly.
Maintenance of the running unit (every 3 months)
Remove the motor chamber cover and take the rotor out of the motor chamber (12). Rinse rotor and pump head under running water and re-assemble the parts in reverse order.
