Frequently Asked Questions - GTM 25 GARMIN

How to connect the GTM 25 receiver to my GPS?
Connect the mini-USB connector of the receiver to the mini-USB port of your Garmin GPS, then plug the cigarette lighter cable into a 12V socket in the vehicle. The GPS must be on external power.
The red LED does not light up, what should I do?
Check that the cigarette lighter cable is properly connected and that the vehicle socket is powered. If the LED remains off, the receiver may be defective.
Why am I not receiving traffic information?
Make sure you are in an area covered by the TMC FM service. Check that the receiver is properly connected and that the internal or external antenna is correctly positioned. A metallic windshield can reduce reception.
Is a subscription required to use the receiver?
Depending on the region, the service may be free or require a subscription. Check the traffic settings on your GPS or the Garmin website (www.garmin.com/traffic) for more information.
Can I use the external antenna provided with my nüvi?
Yes, if your GPS comes with an external antenna, you can connect it to the external antenna connector of the GTM 25 to improve reception in weak signal areas.
How to know if the receiver is working?
The red LED lights up when it is powered. Check on your GPS map for traffic incident display or traffic icon. Data acquisition may take up to 5 minutes.
Where to place the receiver for best reception?
Place it on the windshield using the suction cup, preferably vertically, without obstructing visibility. Avoid metallic areas and heat-resistant windshields. If necessary, use the external antenna.
Is the receiver compatible with all Garmin GPS devices?
It is compatible with Garmin GPS devices that have a mini-USB port and are capable of receiving TMC traffic data. Check the compatibility list on the Garmin website.
How to clean the receiver?
Use a soft, dry cloth. Do not use chemical or abrasive products. Disconnect it before cleaning.
What to do if the receiver is defective?
Contact Garmin customer service. Do not attempt to repair it yourself, as this would void the warranty. Refer to the manual for warranty information.

GARMIN GTM 25 - GTM ^TM 25 Instructions - 1

See the Important Safety and Product Information guide in the GPS device box for product warnings and other important information.

The Garmin GTM 25 delivers Traffic Message Channel (TMC) information, including road conditions and traffic delays, to your GPS device. When traffic information is received, your GPS device displays traffic delays on the map. This information is used to avoid traffic delays and find the fastest routes.

The traffic information is broadcast over the FM Radio Data System (RDS). For coverage areas, refer to the Garmin Web site at www.garmin.com/traffic.

To receive traffic information, the traffic receiver must be connected to the GPS device, connected to an external power source, and the traffic receiver and GPS device must be in data range of an FM station transmitting TMC data.

Connecting the Traffic Receiver

Before mounting the traffic receiver, see the Important Safety and Product Information guide included with your GPS device for information about laws pertaining to windshield mounting.

  1. Remove the power cable from your GPS device, if necessary.
  2. Connect the mini-USB connector on the traffic receiver to the mini-USB connector on your GPS device.

Mini-USB connector External antenna connector Internal antenna Power LED Vehicle power adapter

  1. Plug the vehicle power adapter on the traffic receiver into a power outlet in your vehicle.

  2. The internal antenna is sufficient in strong signal areas. To increase the signal range, connect the external antenna (if it came with one) to the traffic receiver. Use the attached suction cups to route the external antenna on the windshield vertically, if possible. Do not obstruct the driver's view.

External antenna GTM 25 External antenna connector

  1. Route the traffic receiver so that it does not interfere with vehicle operating controls.
  2. For added support, attach the additional suction cup anywhere on the traffic receiver.

Testing the Traffic Receiver

  • Observe the LED: When the traffic receiver is connected to power, the red LED is on. The traffic receiver may take up to five minutes to acquire data.
  • Check the map: Check the map on the GPS device for traffic incidents or a traffic icon. Refer to the owner's manual.

TIP: If you have trouble receiving traffic information, you may be in a poor signal area. Drive your vehicle to an open area, out of garages and away from tall buildings. Connect the external antenna, if necessary.

- Verify your service area: Check for service from the pay service or free or premium services.

NOTE: Heated (metalized) windshields could degrade the performance of the traffic receiver.

Service and Subscription Information

Depending on your region, your traffic receiver receives traffic data through either a premium service or a free, public service. For information about your traffic service subscription, see the product packaging or the Traffic settings in the GPS device. The subscription activates automatically after your Garmin GPS device acquires satellite signals while receiving traffic signals from the service provider.

You can add other FM TMC subscriptions at any time. Check the Garmin Web site at www.garmin.com/fmtraffic for other available services.

Registering the Traffic Receiver
