6. Connections and Control Elements

Modifications to the vehicle which are made necessary through the installation of the subwoofers or other components must always be carried out in such a manner that neither the traffic safety nor the physical stability of the car is impaired. With many cars, the fitness/roadworthiness approval will lapse if you merely saw out a section of the panelling. If you are in doubt when selecting a place for installation, consult your car dealer. As the subwoofer generates heat the place of installation must be resistant against heat. To warrant sufficient ventilation, an area of 5 cm must be kept free around the amplifier module of the subwoofer. Air circulation also must not be impaired by any objects like magazines, blankets, covers, etc. Make sure before drilling the attachment holes that no electric cables, brake lines, the fuel tank or similar are damaged. When using tools to install your car hi-fi components, observe the manufacturer’s safety instructions. When installing the car hi-fi system, take into consideration the risk of accident which can arise from devices being torn out and thrown about in the case of an accident. Therefore, you should secure every component in a place where it cannot be dangerous to passengers. Select a suitable place of installation for mounting the subwoofer. A suitable place for mounting has the following features:

  • as free from dust as possible
  • good air circulation
  • an environment which is not sensitive to heat The boot/trunk of your car is a suitable location. Make sure that the car subwoofer always remains accessible enough that it can still be connected to the electrical system. Attach the subwoofer with straps or similar fixtures. This fastening must be also able to bear the load of the subwoofer in case of an accident.23

8. Connecting the Power Supply

The electric connection should be done by a specialist. To avoid electrical short circuits and any resulting damage to the device, the negative terminal (earth) of the car battery has to be disconnected when connecting the power supply. Only connect the negative pole of the battery, when you have completely connected the system and checked the connections. You should only use a voltmeter or a diode test lamp for checking the voltage on the on-board cables as normal test lamps consume excessive currents and can thus damage the electronic system of the car. When laying the cables, make sure that they are not squeezed or scoured on sharp edges. Use rubber grommets for the feed-though points. In order to reduce interference by the generator or other electric systems of the vehicle, the subwoofer should be directly powered by the car battery. No other electrical consumers such as, for example, the fan, the windscreen washer etc., may be supplied with current by the same cable as the subwoofer. Use connection cables with the largest possible diameter for connecting the power supply and the ground of the subwoofer. The required diameter of the cable depends on the power requirements of the components connected. A diameter of the cables which is too small can cause a cable to char through in unfavourable cases. Moreover, the increased ohmic resistance leads to unnecessary losses of power. An additional fuse in the positive cable to the subwoofer is necessary in any case (fuse holder is not included in delivery). The fuse should be placed as close as possible to the battery (max. 20 cm away). In case of a short circuit (e.g. if the connection cable is worn through), the fuse will disconnect the positive lead thus avoiding damage to the battery or preventing the supply cable from burning. The strength of the fuse depends on the power consumption of the connected devices of the car hi-fi system.

  • Connect the BAT connection on the connecting terminal of the power supply (9) directly to the positive terminal of the car battery.
  • Connect the REM connection on the connecting terminal of the power supply (9) to the remote control connection of the aerial control output of the car radio.

The subwoofer is switched on through this input, as long as there is a voltage of +12 V present. Nowadays, almost all car radios are provided with such a control output which only carries +12 V if the radio is turned on.

  • Connect the GND connector on the connection terminal for the power supply (9) to the negative terminal (earth) of the battery or to the car body.24 Beware that the electrical conductivity is limited due to the increased use of gluing technology in car manufacture or the lacquering of metal parts, not each metal component is suited to function as an earthing point.

Distribute the power supply in a star-shaped way, i.e. the connections of the negative leads start from one and the same point for all components of the car hi-fi system. This way of distributing the power supply avoids earth loops. Connect the positive leads in the same way.25

9. Connecting the Inputs

The subwoofer has both speaker and cinch inputs to be connected to the car radio. If your car radio has cinch outputs, the subwoofer should be connected through the cinch inputs no matter what to ensure high-quality playback. But if your car radio is not provided with cinch outputs, you can connect the subwoofer to the speaker outputs without the use of any additional devices or adapters. Never use two different types of input (e.g. speaker and cinch inputs) at the same time. When connecting the cinch inputs only use suitable shielded cinch wires. The use of other cables might cause interference. Keep the length of the cinch cables as short as possible. Do not lay the cinch cables in the proximity of other cables. In this manner you can avoid stray pick-up to the subwoofer input. To avoid distortion or faulty tuning and that can possibly damage the subwoofer, always make sure that the cinch inputs are connected only to sources which are provided with a cinch output and that the speaker inputs by car radios are only connected to speaker outputs. For this, observe also the connection data in the section “Technical Data”. a) Connection via the cinch inputs

  • Connect the cinch outputs of your car radio to the LINE IN connection (5) of the subwoofer. Left-hand cinch output of the car radio > LINE IN L Right-hand cinch output of the car radio > LINE IN R
  • Put the switch RCA/HIGH INPUT (8) into the RCA position. b) Connection via the speaker inputs
  • Connect the speaker outputs of your car radio with the subwoofer input HI-LEVEL INPUT (6). L+ > left positive speaker output L- > left negative speaker output R- > right negative speaker output R+ > right positive speaker output
  • Put the PHASE (3) controller to the 0° position.26

After installing and checking all the necessary cable connections you can set the subwoofer into operation.

  • If you have checked the cable connections, reconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
  • Turn the volume control LEVEL (4) counter-clockwise to minimum.
  • Put the FREQ (1) controller roughly to the middle position.
  • Put the PHASE (3) controller to the 0° position.
  • Switch on your car radio. The indicator POWER display (2) lights up. If the POWER display (2) does not light up, an error has occurred. The amplifier has to be switched off immediately. In such a case, check all connections and the speakers. If you cannot detect an error, please contact a specialist for help.
  • If the POWER display lights up (2), set the car radio’s volume to a medium volume level.
  • Now adjust the subwoofer volume to the volume of the other speakers using the LEVEL (4) control. The subwoofer should not drone or be able to be heard separately. It should merely support the additional speakers in the deep-bass range.
  • You may now also adjust the set separating frequency with the controller FREQ (1) to achieve the best sound. Again, observe a clean bass playback that will seamlessly fit into the acoustic pattern of the other speakers.
  • Also try out different settings of the PHASE (3) controller. A changed phase shift often leads to better bass playback (depending of the installation suite of the subwoofer).
  • If the volume inside your car is too high, you will not hear acoustic warning signals. This constitutes a danger to yourself and other road users. Therefore, make sure the volume is at a suitable level.
  • Inattentiveness on the road could lead to serious accidents. Operation of the hi-fi system may therefore only take place if the traffic situation permits and you are not unduly distracted by operating the system.
  • Do not keep any magnetic storage media such as computer disks, video cassettes or similar near the subwoofer as the magnetic field of the speaker may corrupt the information stored on these media.
  • Do not listen to excessively loud music for long periods of time. This could damage your hearing.27

Check the technical safety of the subwoofer regularly, e.g. for damage to the connection cables or to the housing. If it can be assumed that safe operation is no longer possible, the device must be turned off and precautions are to be taken to ensure that it is not used unintentionally. Disconnect the car power system! It can be assumed that safe operation is no longer possible if:

  • the device shows visible damage
  • if the appliance does not function for some reason, or
  • following considerable stress during transportation Always observe the following safety instructions before cleaning or servicing the subwoofer: Live components may be exposed if the covering is opened or components are removed. Before servicing or repair works, the subwoofer must be disconnected from all sources of voltage. Capacitors inside the device may still carry voltage even though they have been disconnected from all voltage sources. Repairs may only be carried out by qualified personnel who are familiar with the hazards involved and the relevant regulations. If you have to replace fuses, ensure that you only use replacement fuses of the same type and rated current (see „Technical data“). It is absolutely impermissible to repair fuses or bridge the fuse holder.
  • After disconnecting the appliance from the power source (by disconnecting the car power supply!), carefully remove the FUSE (7) fuse from the fuse holder.
  • Replace it by a fuse of the same type.
  • Only then should the subwoofer be re-connected to the car system and put into operation.28

In purchasing the Raveland Subwoofer you have acquired a product which has been designed according to the state of art and is operationally reliable. Nevertheless, problems or faults may occur. Therefore, we would like to explain to you how you can eliminate possible faults. Observe the safety instructions at all times! No function, the indicator POWER (2) does not light up:

  • The GND connection on the connection terminal of the power supply (9) is not connected to the car body.
  • The REM connection on the connecting terminal of the power supply (9) is not connected to the aerial control output of the car radio.
  • The BAT connection on the connecting terminal for the power supply (9) is not supplied with +12 V.
  • The electric fuse in the subwoofer has been triggered due to a technical problem with the subwoofer.
  • The temperature protection of the subwoofer has been triggered due to overheating. Allow the device to cool down.
  • The FUSE (7) of the subwoofer or the fuse in the positive connection is defective. The indicator POWER (2) lights, but there is no sound:
  • The volume control unit of the car radio is set to minimum.
  • The subwoofer’s volume control LEVEL (4) is set to minimum.
  • One input is not connected correctly. Interference noises occur:
  • A bad earth connection of the earthing cable. Remove any rust or paint from the contact surfaces.
  • The earthing point of the car radio and of the subwoofer are not on the same potential, test different earthing points.
  • The cables of the subwoofer are positioned too close to the cables for the ignition system of the vehicle.
  • The ignition system is not shielded.
  • The cables of the input are installed too close to the power supply cables. The subwoofer switches on and off during operation:
  • Poor earth contact of the earth connection cable, the mass point of the cable or of the battery terminal is corroded.
  • The voltage applied at the BAT connection on the connection terminal for the power supply (9) is too low, the connecting point of the cable or of the battery terminal corrodes, battery too weak.
  • A loose contact at the remote cable, REM connection of the connection terminal for the power supply (9) shows a loose contact or is corroded. Repairs other than those described above should only be performed by an authorised specialist.29
