How do I toast bagels with the KitchenAid KMT2116CU toaster?

Insert the bagels with cut sides facing inward. Set the desired browning level, lower the lever, then press the Bagel button. The indicator lights up. The toaster automatically adjusts heat to toast the inside without burning the outside. The program ends with an automatic lift.

How do I use the defrost function?

Place frozen bread in the slots, set the browning level, lower the lever, then press the Defrost button. The indicator lights up. The toaster adds a delay to defrost before toasting. The toast automatically lifts at the end.

How do I activate the keep warm function?

After setting the browning level and lowering the lever, press the Keep Warm button. The indicator blinks slowly. At the end of toasting, the indicator becomes steady and the toaster keeps the toast warm for 3 minutes.

How do I check the cooking without stopping the cycle?

Use the Lift & Look function: raise the lever at any time to check progress, then lower it again to continue the cycle. This does not interrupt the program.

How do I clean the KitchenAid KMT2116CU toaster?

Unplug the appliance and let it cool down. Wipe the exterior with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners. For the crumb tray, press the center to open it, remove it and empty the crumbs. Hand wash it, then reinsert until it clicks.

What to do if there is smoke during first use?

A small amount of smoke is normal during first use. It is due to the heating of new elements and is harmless. It will disappear after a few cycles. Ensure the slots are free of any packaging.

A short power supply cord (or detachable power supply cord) should be used to reduce the risk resulting from becoming entangled in or tripping over a longer cord.

USING THE TOASTER

Your KitchenAid® Toaster offers ease of use and exceptional control. With simple start-to-finish toasting, the Toaster automatically defrosts, toasts bread or bagels, then keeps them warm before serving.

Before first use

Before using your Toaster, check the extra-wide slots and remove any packing or printed material that might have fallen inside during shipping or handling. To avoid damage to the Toaster, do not probe inside the Toaster slots with any metal objects.

Shorten cord, if necessary, by wrapping cord under the base. The toaster's feet are tall enough to allow the cord to exit from under any side of the toaster.

NOTE: You may see light smoke the first time you use the Toaster. This is normal. The smoke is harmless and will soon dissipate.

Simple start-to-finish toasting

Simple start-to-finish toasting: Select any, or all, of the three special toasting functions (defrost, bagel, or keep warm), and the Toaster will automatically move from one step to the next without any additional effort on your part.

Select your desired shade by turning the shade control knob to the right for darker toasting or to the left for lighter toasting. To reheat toast that has cooled, turn the shade control knob to the far left of the shade control settings.

NOTE: The age, type, and moisture level of different breads may require different shade settings. For example, dry bread will brown more rapidly than moist bread and will require a lighter setting.

Press down on lift lever to start the toasting cycle. If Keep Warm isn't selected, the toast will rise automatically at the end of the cycle and the Toaster will turn off.

NOTE: To activate the Keep Warm function, press down on the lift lever, then press the KEEP WARM button.

NOTE: For even toasting, toast only one bread type and thickness at a time. If toasting bagels, be sure to press the Bagel button. See "Toasting Bagels."

To cancel toasting at any time, press CANCEL. The Toaster will raise the toast and turn off.

TIP: For smaller items, lift up on the lift lever to raise toast above the top of the Toaster.

Toasting Bagels

Your Toaster features a special setting for bagels, ensuring optimal heating time for the best results. The heating elements will adjust to nicely toast the inside of a cut bagel without burning the outside surface.

2 With the shade control knob set to your desired shade, press down on the lift lever to start the toasting cycle.

3 Press the BAGEL button. The Bagel indicator light will glow. If Keep Warm isn't selected, the bagel(s) will rise automatically at the end of the cycle and the Toaster will turn off.
TIP: The Bagel function can be used at the same time as the Defrost and Keep Warm functions.

Defrosting

The Defrost function adds additional time to the toasting cycle to defrost frozen items before toasting them.

Insert bread or other food to be toasted into the slot(s).

2 With the shade control knob set to your desired shade, press down on the lift lever to start the toasting cycle.

Press the DEFROST button. The Defrost indicator light will glow. If Keep Warm isn't selected, the toast will rise automatically at the end of the cycle and the Toaster will turn off.

TIP: The Defrost function can be used at the same time as the Bagel and Keep Warm functions.

Keep Warm

The Keep Warm function holds toast in low, gentle heat for 3 minutes after toasting.

2 With the shade control knob set to your desired shade, press down on the lift lever to start the toasting cycle.

3 Press the KEEP WARM button. The Keep Warm indicator light will blink slowly.

4 When the toasting cycle is complete, the Keep Warm indicator light will stop blinking and glow continuously while the toaster keeps the toast warm for 3 minutes after toasting.

TIP: The Keep Warm function can be used at the same time as the Bagel and Defrost functions.

Lift & See

With the Lift & See feature, you can check toasting progress without stopping the toasting cycle.

Raise the lift lever any time during the toasting cycle to view the toast's progress.

TIP: For smaller items, lift up on the lift lever to raise toast above the top of the Toaster.

CARE AND CLEANING

IMPORTANT: The tray will be hot immediately following a toasting cycle. Allow Toaster to cool before emptying the crumb tray.

Unplug the Toaster and let it cool before cleaning.

2 Wipe Toaster with a soft, damp cotton cloth. Do not use paper towels, abrasive cleansers or liquid cleaning products. Do not immerse Toaster in water.

NOTE: If grease or oil splatters on the Toaster, wipe splatters away immediately using a clean, damp cotton cloth.

Press "PUSH" (located in center of the crumb tray) so that it opens slightly, then slide it out of the Toaster. Shake the crumbs into a waste container. For consistent browning results, empty the crumb tray after each use. Crumb tray is hand-wash only.

Return crumb tray to Toaster. Press in on the center of the crumb tray until it clicks into position. Do not use the Toaster without the crumb tray fully in place.

If the problem cannot be corrected:
