Frequently Asked Questions - OL5025 IFM

How to install the OL5025 sensor?
Orient the sensor towards the object to be detected and fix it using a mounting bracket. Precise alignment is necessary for optimal range. Avoid strong vibrations that could misalign the sensor.
How to program the switching threshold in dynamic mode?
Press the button until the red LED flashes (programming mode). Place the moving object in the beam and press once. The yellow and green LEDs turn off then flash again. Press once more to confirm. The green LED lights up if the adjustment is successful.
How to program the switching threshold in static mode?
Put the sensor in programming mode (long press until red flashes). Place the stationary object in the beam and press once. Remove the object and press again. The green LED lights up if the adjustment is successful.
What do the LEDs on the sensor mean?
Green LED: device operational. Yellow LED: output switched. Red LED: detection error (poor adjustment, dirty lenses). Yellow+red flashing: short circuit or internal error.
How to clean the lenses of the OL5025?
Use a soft, dry cloth. Do not use solvents or abrasive products that could damage the plastic lenses.
What safety precautions should be observed?
The laser radiation is class 2. Do not look directly into the beam. Apply the provided warning labels near the sensor.
What is the maximum range of the sensor?
The range depends on the object and conditions. It is indicated on the device label (value on white paper 200x200 mm). For very small objects, place them at the focal point (maximum range).
How to change the output function (light/dark)?
Press the programming button for 10 seconds. After 2 s, the red LED flashes quickly. Release after 8 s: the output function is reversed.
What to do if the red LED flashes during operation?
This indicates a detection error (poor adjustment or dirty lenses). Check alignment, clean the lenses, or reprogram the switching threshold.
How to set maximum sensitivity?
Put the sensor in programming mode. Orient it so that no light is reflected (no object). Press the button twice (steps 2 and 3). The threshold will be set to maximum sensitivity.

USER MANUAL OL5025 IFM

Functions and features

The diffuse reflection sensor detects objects and materials without contact and indicates their presence by a switched signal.

Range (r): see type label (value referred to white paper 200mm× 200mm

If very small objects are to be detected they must be located in the focus (= max. range).

IFM OL5025 - Functions and features - 1

Laser radiation; laser protection class 2.

Do not look directly into the beam!

The enclosed labels (warning laser) must be applied in close proximity to the unit.

Electrical connection

IFM OL5025 - Electrical connection - 1

Isolate power, then connect unit (see page 13 or type label).

Load of the function check output (fc output): max. 10mA.

Installation

IFM OL5025 - Installation - 1

Align the photocell and fasten it to a mounting bracket.

Maximum range is only possible with precise alignment.

Adjustment aid:

In the programming mode (see "Setting the switching threshold") an adjustment aid is integrated. After step 1 the intensity of the transmitted light is increased so that the transmitted light spot is clearly visible. After step 3 the transmitted light is set to normal intensity.

IFM OL5025 - Adjustment aid: - 1

Mount the unit so that the mounting position cannot change (in particular avoid high vibrations!).

The units with a light spot diameter of < 1mm are highly focussed; a change in the mounting position will result in misalignment.

Setting the switching threshold (dynamic operation)

  • Moving objects in the detection area

The unit detects input signals of various intensity in any sequence and calculates the optimum switching threshold.

1Press until the red LED flashesYellow and green LED's flash alternately (= unit is in the programming mode).
2Allow the objects to pass through the detection area. Press once. The yellow and green LED's go out for approx. 1 s, then flash again alternately.
3Press once. The yellow and green LED's go out for approx. 1s, then the green LED is on (= unit is in operating mode).

IFM OL5025 - Setting the switching threshold (dynamic operation) - 1

If the setting of the switching threshold is not possible (e.g. object signal and background signal are about the same), the red LED flashes after step 3. The unit then passes into the operating mode with the switching signal being unchanged.

If the programming button is not activated for 15 minutes during the programming process, the unit passes automatically into the operating mode with the switching threshold being unchanged.

Setting of the maximum sensitivity:

  • Go into the programming mode (step 1).
  • Align the unit so that no light is reflected.
  • Press the setting button twice (see steps 2 and 3).

Setting the switching threshold (stationary operation)

  • Stationary objects

The unit detects input signals of various intensity in any sequence and calculates the optimum switching threshold.

1Press until the red LED flashes.Yellow and green LED's flash alternately (= unit is in the programming mode).
2Place the object into the detection area * Press once. The yellow and green LED's go out for approx. 1 s, then flash again alternately.
3Remove the object * Press once. The yellow and green LED's go out for approx. 1s, then the green LED is on (= unit is in operating mode).

*You can also proceed in reverse order: first setting without the object, then with the object.

Programming the output function

1Press for 10s.The red LED starts to flash fast after 2 s. Then the yellow and green LED's flash alternately. After 8 s all LED's go off, the output function has changed from light-on mode to dark-on mode (or vice versa).

Operation

Check the safe functioning of the diffuse reflection sensor. Display by LED's and by the function check output.

LED green unit is ready for operation
LED yellow output is switched
LED rederror in object detection, e.g. maladjustment, soiling of the lenses
LED's yellow + redflashing alternately, 2Hz: output short-circuited flashing alternately, 1Hz: internal malfunction (output is not switched)

Function check output set in the event of:

  • Short-circuit of the switching output; reset approx. 2s after elimination of the error.
  • Wrong object detection (maladjustment, soiling of the lenses); reset when object is again clearly detected.
    Internal error.

Maintenance

Keep the plastic lenses of the sensor free from soiling.

For cleaning do not use any solvents or cleaning agents which could damage the plastic lenses.
