Frequently Asked Questions - F 850 GS (2022) BMW

How to start the engine of the BMW F 850 GS?
Make sure the key (Keyless Ride or traditional key) is detected. Turn on the ignition by turning the key or pressing the remote control. Set the circuit breaker to the run position. Pull the clutch lever, then press the starter button (right handlebar). The engine starts and the ABS and DTC self-diagnosis runs.
How to adjust the spring preload?
Use the adjustment knob located on the right side of the motorcycle (see overview). Turn the knob clockwise to increase preload (heavier load) and counterclockwise to decrease it. Adjustment is manual, no tool required. For precise adjustment, refer to the 'Adjustment' chapter in the manual.
What do the warning lights on the dashboard mean?
The lights are described in the 'Control and warning lights' chapter (pages 28-60). The main ones: engine warning light (yellow/red) for an engine fault; ABS (yellow) indicates a malfunction; DTC (yellow) for a traction control problem; tire pressure (yellow/red) for a deviation. A detailed message appears on the TFT screen.
How to activate the cruise control?
Cruise control is operated via the left handlebar switch. Press the Cruise control button (speedometer symbol) to activate. Once the desired speed is reached, press Set (rocker switch). You can increase or decrease the speed with the +/- buttons. To deactivate, brake or press the cancel button.
How to activate or deactivate the traction control (DTC)?
DTC is operated via the left handlebar switch. Press the DTC button (motorcycle with skidding symbol) to activate or deactivate. The corresponding light comes on. In Enduro or Enduro Pro modes, DTC can be partially deactivated to allow wheel spin off-road. Refer to the 'Operation' chapter.
What to do if the tire pressure warning light comes on?
If the tire pressure light comes on yellow, the pressure is in the limit zone. If red, it is out of tolerance. Stop as soon as possible, check the cold pressure and adjust according to the indicated values (front 2.2 bar solo, 2.5 bar with passenger; rear 2.5 bar solo, 2.9 bar with passenger). If the light flashes red, stop immediately and check the tire condition.
How to replace the battery of the Keyless Ride key?
Open the key fob by pressing the button (battery cover). Remove the old battery (type CR 2032) and insert a new one with the positive pole facing up. Close the cover. If the battery is too low, a message appears on the screen. Keep the key out of reach of children.
What is the recommended regular maintenance?
The maintenance schedule includes: running-in check between 500 and 1200 km, then oil and filter change every 10,000 km, valve check every 20,000 km, spark plug replacement every 20,000 km, brake fluid every 2 years, fork oil change every 40,000 km. An annual BMW service is recommended. The TFT screen displays due dates.
Can the F 850 GS be used off-road?
Yes, the F 850 GS is designed for off-road. The Enduro and Enduro Pro modes adapt the engine response, DTC, and ABS. In Enduro Pro, DTC can be deactivated and rear ABS deactivated to allow wheel spin. It is recommended to reduce tire pressure. Refer to the 'Off-road use' chapter (page 143).
How to use the intelligent emergency call (eCall)?
In an emergency, press the SOS button (right handlebar) to initiate a manual call. In case of a serious fall, the call is automatic. The BMW Call Center is contacted and your location is transmitted. You can cancel the call by holding the SOS button for 2 seconds. Make sure you have network coverage.
