Frequently Asked Questions - OG0038 IFM

How to program sensitivity for static objects?
Activate programming mode by pressing the push-button for about 2 seconds until the LED flashes. Then measure with the object by pressing once, then measure without object by pressing again. The LED turns off with each measurement. If successful, the cell returns to normal mode.
How to adjust sensitivity for moving objects?
Activate programming mode (press 2 s). During the measurement (approx. 1 s), let at least two objects pass through the detection zone. Press once for the first measurement, then repeat the same operation for the second measurement. The LED turns off with each measurement. The sensitivity is then adapted to moving objects.
What does the flashing LED mean?
A flashing (1 Hz) LED indicates an unsafe zone: the receiver receives weak light, meaning object detection is uncertain. Consult the manual for precise conditions according to the output mode.
How to connect the device?
Before any connection, disconnect the power. Connection according to label: wire BN (brown) to L+, wire BU (blue) to L-. Use an appropriate miniature fuse.
How to clean the lenses?
Clean the lenses with a soft cloth to remove any dirt. Do not use solvents or aggressive products that could damage the plastic lenses.
What to do if programming fails?
If after step 3 the LED flashes for about 2 s, programming has failed (object and background signals too similar). The cell returns to operating mode without sensitivity modification. Repeat by adjusting the alignment or the object.
How to lock or unlock the cell?
To lock: press the button for 10 s: after 2 s the LED flashes quickly, then slowly for 8 s, then turns off (cell locked). To unlock: press again for 10 s: the LED turns off and the lock is cancelled.
What is the difference between light-on and dark-on mode?
In light-on mode (normally closed), the output is switched when the receiver receives light (no object). In dark-on mode (normally open), the output is switched when the receiver does not receive light (object present). The version is indicated on the label.
How to check proper operation?
Check the LED indication and the output status. Depending on the mode, a lit or unlit LED indicates the presence or absence of an object. See the table in the manual for each mode.
What to do in case of short circuit?
After a short circuit, it is recommended to check the proper operation of the device. Insert a miniature fuse compliant with the technical data sheet to protect the device.

Function and features

The through-beam sensor detects objects and materials without contact and indicates their presence by a switched signal.

Range (r): see type label.

Electrical connection

IFM OG0038 - Electrical connection - 1

Isolate power, then connect the unit (see page 17 or type label).

Core colours: BN = brown, BU = blue.

Output function light-on (—) or dark-on mode (—) depending on the unit (see type label).

Note: insert a miniature fuse according to the technical data sheet.

Recommendation: check the unit for reliable function after a short circuit.

Installation

receiver push button LED red transmitter LED green

Fix the receiver (type OGE-...) in position.

Align the transmitter (type OGS-...) towards the receiver and tighten in the same way.

Maximum range is only possible with precise alignment.

NB: Commissioning

The through-beam sensor is supplied ready to operate (plug and play) set at the max. sensing range. This is sufficient if the through-beam sensor can operate with maximum excess gain (highest contrast). The following setting procedures should only be necessary in less straightforward applications, for example if partly transparent objects must be detected.

Setting of the sensitivity with stationary objects

1Activate the programming mode of the unit.IFM OG0038 - Setting of the sensitivity with stationary objects - 1Press for about 2s until the LED flashes.
The LED starts to flash rapidly. The unit is in the programming mode as soon as the LED flashes slowly
2Set the sensitivitywithobject.IFM OG0038 - Setting of the sensitivity with stationary objects - 2Press once.
The LED goes out during the first measuring process. As soon as the LED flashes slowly, the unit is in the programming mode again.
3Set the sensitivitywithoutobject.IFM OG0038 - Setting of the sensitivity with stationary objects - 3Press once.
The LED goes out during the second measuring process. If the programming was successful, the unit is now in the normal operating mode.

You can also proceed in reverse order: first setting without the object, then with the object.

IFM OG0038 - Setting of the sensitivity with stationary objects - 4

If the setting of the sensitivity is not possible (e.g. object signal and background signal are about the same), the LED flashes after step 3 for approx. 2s. The unit then passes into the operating mode with the sensitivity being unchanged.

Setting of the sensitivity with moving objects

1Activate the programming mode of the unit.IFM OG0038 - Setting of the sensitivity with moving objects - 1Press for about 2s until the red LED flashes.
The LED starts to flash rapidly. The unit is in the programming mode as soon as the LED flashes slowly.
2During the measurement (approx. 1s) allow at least two objects to move through the sensing area of the lens.IFM OG0038 - Setting of the sensitivity with moving objects - 2

IFM OG0038 - Setting of the sensitivity with moving objects - 4

If the setting of the sensitivity is not possible (e.g. object signal and background signal are about the same), the LED flashes after step 3 for approx. 2s. The unit then passes into the operating mode with the sensitivity being unchanged.

IFM OG0038 - Setting of the sensitivity with moving objects - 5

If the setting button is not activated for 15 minutes during the programming process, the unit passes automatically into the operating mode with the sensitivity being unchanged.

The output of the unit is switched during the whole programming operation!

Setting of the maximum sensitivity

  • Go into the programming mode (step 1).
  • Interrupt the light beam.
  • Press the setting button twice (see steps 2 and 3).

Locking / Unlocking

IFM OG0038 - Setting of the maximum sensitivity - 3Press for 10s.IFM OG0038 - Setting of the maximum sensitivity - 4After 10s the LED goes out, locking is cancelled.

Operation

Check the safe functioning of the diffuse reflection sensor. Display by LED and by the output.

Units with light-on mode (normally closed)

The receiver receives the transmitter light LED is on, output switched: no object detected (certain range).

The receiver receives the transmitter light → LED flashes (1 Hz), output switched,: no object detected (uncertain range).

The receiver receives no transmitter light LED off, output not switched: object detected.

Units with dark-on mode (normally open)

The receiver receives no transmitter light LED is on, output switched: object pre-sent (certain range).

The receiver receives very little transmitter light → LED flashes (1 Hz), output switched: object present (uncertain range).

The receiver receives the transmitter light LED off, output not switched: no object detected.

Maintenance

Keep the lens of the sensor free from soiling. For cleaning do not use any solvents or cleaning agents which could damage the plastic lenses.
