Where to install the Alecto SA20 smoke detector?

Install it on the ceiling, at least 50 cm from walls and 60 cm from corners. Place a detector on each floor, near bedrooms and in risk rooms (kitchen, laundry). Avoid bathrooms, garages, and areas with drafts.

How to test the detector?

Press the PAUSE/TEST button for at least 3 seconds. The alarm should sound immediately with 2 or 3 beeps. Release the button, the alarm stops. Test it every week.

What to do in case of a false alarm?

Use the Pause function: press PAUSE/TEST for 2-3 seconds. Sensitivity is reduced for 9 minutes, the red LED flashes every 9 seconds. After 9 minutes, the detector returns to normal sensitivity.

How to know if the battery is low?

When the battery is low, the detector emits a beep every 30 to 40 seconds. This signal continues for at least 30 days. Replace the battery with a 9V battery (Gold Peak 1604A or Duracell MN1604).

How to replace the battery?

Turn the detector to remove it from the mounting plate. Replace the battery observing polarity. Reattach the detector to the plate and test by pressing PAUSE/TEST for 3 seconds until the alarm sounds.

Can I paint the detector?

No, never paint the smoke detector cover. Paint could block the sensors and prevent proper operation.

How to clean the detector?

In very dusty rooms, clean the detector with a vacuum cleaner fitted with a soft brush. No other maintenance is required.

What to do if the alarm goes off for no apparent reason?

If you see no fire or smoke, use the Pause function (press PAUSE/TEST for 2-3 seconds). If the alarm persists, consider it may be a fire. Evacuate immediately and call the fire department once safe.

What are the alarm sound levels?

The alarm produces a sound of at least 85 dB(A) at 3 meters, enough to wake a sleeping person.

How to create an evacuation plan?

Draw a plan of your home showing doors, windows, and escape routes. Ensure all occupants know the sound of the alarm. Practice evacuation regularly. In case of alarm, leave immediately without opening hot doors.

The SA20 is a smoke detector set for discovery of fire in the first stage. If smoke develops, the SA20 will give a loud beep of at least 85dB (A). As part of the link function all the smoke alarms within range will sound the alarm. We advice to test the detectors weekly using the test button on the detectors. Save this manual in a safe place of the electricity meter cupboard.

RECOMMENDED INSTALLATION LOCATIONS FOR THE SA20:

• Install the first smoke detector near the bedroom. Ensure that it is placed so, if it would detect fire, at least one exit route would still be accessible. We recommend to place one alarm near each potential blockade of your exit route, so you are alerted before a fire would block off escape.
  Use multiple smoke detectors to increase safety and ensure an alert before the escape route is blocked.
  Install at least one smoke detector on each floor of your house.
  Install at least one smoke detector in each room where people smoke or where there is equipment that may potentially cause a fire.
• Smoke and heat will first move upwards towards the ceiling; after that the smoke and heat will travel horizontally.
• Install the detector on the ceiling. Except for rooms smaller than 1m , you should stay at least 50~cm away from the wall and 60cm from any corner. Smoke and heat do not gather in such corners, preventing the detector from alerting you on time.

DO NOT INSTALL IN THE FOLLOWING LOCATIONS:

• The kitchen; Steam from cooking might give a false alarm.
• The shower or bathroom; water damp might cause a false alarm and the moist environment might damage the detector.
• The garage: The car exhaust might cause a false alarm.
• In front of a fan or nearby the exhaust of an air conditioner or heater.
  In a ceiling nook.
• In rooms where the temperature could reach below 0^ or beyond 40^ .
• Do not paint or otherwise cover this smoke detector.

INSTALLATION INFORMATION:

Attach the ceiling plate using the included plugs and screws to the ceiling on a location of choice. Wall mounting is not recommended for smoke detection. Put the 9V block battery in the smoke detector. Then put the detector to the ceiling plate and, twist clockwise to lock it in place. Perform a first test by holding the test key for 3 seconds. Also see the paragraph: "Testing".

IMPORTANT:

For optimal operation, we recommend mounting the smoke detector on the ceiling. See also the installation instructions. If ceiling mounting is not possible, we recommend that you place the smoke detector in the middle of a wall. The installation location must be in the natural airflow of the room and free of side walls or slope.

USING, TESTING AND MAINTENANCE:

Using:

The smoke detector works if the 9V battery has been placed and the SA20 has been mounted to the ceiling. The unit can only be mounted to the plate if the battery has been installed. The LED underneath the test button will now flash ± every 30 seconds. Once smoke is detected, the alarm will sound. Once the smoke disappears, the smoke alarm will stop automatically

Hush function

The Hush function allows the user to decrease the smoke detectors sensitivity during an alarm. By pressing the "HUSH/TEST" button 2 - 3 sec the smoke detector is decreased for a period of 9 minutes. The red led flashes 1x every 9 seconds in Hush mode. After 9 minutes the smoke detector resets to its default sensitivity. For example, this can be used when the smoke detector gives alarm during cooking.

Time-out function:

The time-out function allows you to preventively lower the sensitivity of the smoke detector. By pressing the "HUSH/TEST" button 2 - 3 sec without an active alarm, you reduce the smoke detectors sensitivity for 9 minutes. The red LED lights up 1x every 9 seconds during Hush mode. After 9 minutes the smoke detector resets to its default sensitivity. You can use this mode for example when you know that a situation (for example: cooking) will product smoke and there is no danger.

Test:

Hold the test key for at least 3 seconds. The operation is still correct if you hear 2 or 3 signal tones. Check the smoke detectors weekly. In alarm status the smoke detector will generate about 85dB(A) . Do not use candles, open fire or cigarettes to test the smoke detector.

ATTENTION:

• If the cause of an alarm is unclear, assume it's caused by fire. Immediately evacuate the building.
• Keep the smoke detectors out of range of children.
• Protect against dust during rennovations. Without protection the smoke detectors will lose their functionality.

Maintenance:

The smoke detector is maintenance-free. In very dusty rooms they may be cleaned by vacuum.

PLAN AN ESCAPE ROUTE:

• Make a map and mark all locations of doors and windows and a possible escape route. Note that you may need an escape ladder on high floors.
• Ensure everyone in the house knows the sound the smoke alarms produce and regularly practice use of the escape route.
• Leave the house immediately according to the plan when hearing the alarm. Every second counts: so respond quickly. If you do not notice smoke or heat, check if everyone in the house is in a secure location.
• Do not open any doors without feeling whether the door is warm or if there is smoke coming from underneath the doors. If it is, do not open that door. If the door is cold, put your shoulder firmly against the door and open it a small amount to check for any heat or smoke first.
• If there is much smoke, keep low and take shallow breaths, preferably through a moist towel. Call the fire department as soon as you are safe outside.

REPLACING THE BATTERIES:

The detector is supplied using a 9Volt bloc battery. Only use the recommended type Gold Peak 1604A or Duracell MN1604. Under normal conditions the battery will last at least one year. If it is about to need replacement, the smoke detector will make a chirping sound every 30 to 40 seconds for at least 30 days. Pay attention to the polarity when replacing batteries. Test the detector after every battery replacement. If the smoke detector does not function, please contact your supplier.

1. Turn the smoke alarm counterclockwise and remove it.

2. Hold the end of the battery and remove the battery.

3. Separate the battery from the battery buckle.

4. Install the battery-correctly according to the positive and negative electrodes shown in the diagram.

5. Put the battery back to and then history into the smoke alarm.

6. Install the alarm back to the mounting plate and rotate clockwise to fix it.

Note: Every time after replacing the battery, should press the test button. The alarm will sound with quickly red light flashes, then release the button, the sound will stop in a few seconds, indicating that the alarm can work normally.

ENVIRONMENT:

Do not throw away used batteries, but recycle them using your local chemical depot. The product may not be thrown out as normal waste, but must be recycled as electrical waste.
