Frequently Asked Questions - Linda BA 1500 ADE

How to use the body composition scale?
For simple weighing, step barefoot onto the scale and remain still. For body composition analysis, first program your personal data (gender, age, height) into a memory location (P0 to P9). Then select your memory, place your bare feet on the stainless steel bands and wait for the results to display: weight, body fat percentage (BF), body water percentage (BW), bone mass (BON), muscle mass (MUS) and calorie needs (KCAL).
What are the conditions for an accurate measurement?
Always measure at the same time of day, ideally in the morning 15 minutes after waking up, before or after going to the toilet. Wear little clothing and be barefoot. Place the scale on a flat, hard surface (tiles, hardwood floor), not on carpet. Avoid measuring after exercise, sauna, or a heavy meal.
Who should not use this scale?
People wearing a pacemaker or other electronic implants (cardiac stimulators, etc.) should not use this scale due to the low electrical current passing through the body. Pregnant women can use it without risk to the child, but results will be affected by water retention. People with metal prostheses (e.g., titanium plate) can use it but fat values will be underestimated.
How to program personal data?
Press SET to enter programming mode. Use the ▲ or ▼ keys to select a memory location (P0 to P9) and confirm with SET. Then set gender (♂ or ♀), height (100-220 cm), and age (10-80 years) by pressing ▲/▼ and confirming each step with SET. The data is then saved.
What to do in case of error display?
'Err' indicates overload: weight exceeds 180 kg, remove the load immediately. 'Lo' means low battery: replace the 3 AAA batteries. 'Err 2' appears if fat or water percentage is below 5% or above 60% - the values cannot be calculated.
How to clean the scale?
Use a damp cloth (no solvents or abrasive products). Do not immerse the scale in water. Ensure no heavy objects fall on the scale to avoid breaking the glass.
What is the warranty?
WAAGEN-SCHMITT offers a 3-year warranty from the purchase date against any manufacturing defects. To apply, return the scale with the warranty coupon duly filled and stamped by the retailer, along with proof of purchase.
How to change the weight unit?
Press the SET key until 'kg' flashes on the screen. Then use ▲ or ▼ to switch between kg, lb (pounds) and stlb (stones and pounds). Confirm with SET. Make sure to choose the familiar unit.
Can I use the scale on carpet?
No, it is not recommended to use the scale on carpet as it may cause measurement errors. Always place it on a flat, stable surface like tiles or hardwood floor.
How to interpret the body composition results?
The results include weight, body fat percentage (BF) in %, body water percentage (BW) in %, bone mass (BON) in kg, muscle mass (MUS) in %, and calorie needs (KCAL) in kcal. These values vary by gender and age. For example, essential body fat is between 10-13% for women and 2-5% for men (excluding athletes). Body water is about 60% in men and 55% in women. Follow trends over time rather than isolated values.

Thank you for purchasing these high-quality body analyser scales.

Please read these Operating Instructions carefully before using the product for the first time, and keep them in a safe place so that you can consult them again if you need further information.

1. How do body analyser scales work?

These new, revolutionary scales provide information about your body composition in terms of weight, body fat % ,body water % muscle mass % ,bone mass kg and your basal metabolic rate (energy requirement) in kcal. To start, enter all your personal data, e.g. gender (male or female), height and age. This information must be stored in your personal memory location just once. After that, the process is as easy as on any regular scales. You only need to choose your individual memory button, step onto the scales and in just a few seconds your current body status will be displayed. A small electrical current is used to measure the resistance. Water, which is mainly contained in muscles, is a good conductor, fat on the other hand blocks the current. Taking the measured resistance and the stored data into consideration, the body analyser scales can very precisely calculate your body composition.

2. Conditions of use

The measurements should take place without clothes, if possible, and always barefoot.

Since the body is subject to natural fluctuations (e.g., dehydration through sports or sauna, intake of food and fluids), constant conditions should be ensured when measuring, so as to receive comparable values.

Care should be taken that the measurements are always carried out at the same time of day. Directly after getting up in the morning, the water has not yet spread through the body. This means that the resistance is still relatively high, due to the bad conductivity in the body. With increasing movements throughout the day, the water spreads through the body, increasing conductivity, which causes the resistance, and thus the fal level too, to be shown as lower. To determine the actual changes of body composition, it is therefore important to measure always at the same time. An easy way of doing this is by always measuring a quarter of an hour after getting up in the morning, either before or after using the toilet.

Despite the minimum current, persons with pacemakers or other implants, which emit frequencies, must not use the body analyser scales! Other implants, e.g. a titanium plate in the knee, pose no danger. Metals, however, conduct electricity extremely well, which has the effect that body fat values are "beautiful", meaning that the actual fat level is higher than shown by the scales. Tendencies, on the other hand, can be determined just as well. In women, menstrual factors have an effect on the

measurement results, since hormonal fluctuations influence the body's water balance. If the body contains all lot of water, the fat values are lower, if less water is contained, the values are a little higher. When a woman is pregnant, there is no danger for the unborn child. But due to larger water deposits during pregnancy, the values are distorted making the measurement senseless.

Units of weight:

Touch the SET button as long as necessary until the kg indicator blinks on the display. By pressing the or -button, you can now change the country-specific weight unit (kg = kilogram / lb = pound or stilo = stone pound). Please make sure that the scales are set to the weight unit relevant to you.

4. Programming / Inputting personal data

Prior to first use, your personal data - such as sex (female or male), age, and height - must be entered and saved in one of the memory cells P0-P9 (for up to 10 people). The scales make use of highly sensitive sensor buttons (Sensor Touch). The touch keys are located below the display. To enter your personal data use the buttons: SET (power-on and memory button), (plus button), (minus button) and follow the individual points (quick scan by touching the button for more than 1 second):

  1. Gently touch the SET button. Links im Display blinkt die Speicherplatzanzeige (z.B. P1). To choose the desired memory cell (P0 - P9), touch the or -button and then save by touching the SET button.
  2. After you have chosen the memory cell (e.g. memory cell P3), the symbol for sex will blink. In order to choose the desired sex (▼male or ♀female), touch the ▲- or ●-button and then save by pressing the SET button.
  3. Once you have chosen your sex (e.g. ♦ male), the indicator for height blinks on the display (default: 170 cm). In order to enter your height, touch the or -button and then save by touching the SET button.
  4. Once you have entered your height, the indicator for age blinks on the display (default age: 25) In order to enter your age, touch the or button and then save by touching the SET button.

Once you have finished entering your data, the scales return to "0.0 kg". The scales are now ready and you can undertake a body analysis. Without further activity the scales deactivate automatically after a few seconds. Your personal data has been saved.

5. Weighing function (weight measurement only)

  1. The scales have a step-on function. Simply step onto the scales, keep still and do not hold onto anything.
  2. Once the scales have stabilized, your weight will be displayed twice in succession and then steadily for approx. 10 seconds. The scales then automatically turn off.

6. Body analysis

An analysis is only possible when you are barefoot. The personal data must be entered beforehand (see section 4).

  1. Activate the scales by touching the SET button. Initially, the personal data of the last setting appears on the display and a few seconds later "0.0 kg". If this is not your data, choose the memory cell in which you saved your personal data using the or -button. Your personal data will be displayed and then the scales return to "0.0 kg".

  2. Now stand carefully on the scales, barefoot with your feet left and right on the stainless steel strips (measuring units), and remain still.

  3. First you will be shown your weight. After that, while the body analysis is being carried out, the signal "o" will run on the display. Remain standing still. After your measurements have been taken, the measured values will be shown to you twice on the display, as follows:

1. Your weight in kg

  1. BF = your body-fat proportion in %
  2. BW = your body water in %
  3. BON = your bone mass in kg
  4. MUS - your muscle mass in %
  5. KCAL = your basal metabolic rate (daily calorie consumption)

The scales will switch off automatically after a few seconds.

You can display the values of your most recent measurements, once you have completed your initial analysis process. Simply select your assigned memory location (1-12) as described under step 1. The memory location display will stop flashing after a few seconds, and the display will show "0.0 kg". You can now press to start the automatic display of your most recent measurement values (the values are shown in sequence), while pressing or will allow you to select the values manually. Pressing the SET button will return the display to analysis mode.

The percentage of body fat shows the percentage of fat in relation to the total weight of a body. There is no general recommendation for this value, since this depends significantly on gender (due to the different physique) and age. Body fat is vital for the daily body functions. It protects organs, cushions joints, regulates body temperature, stores vitamins and acts as an energy storage for the body. With the exception of athletes, a body fat percentage for women between 10% and 13% and for men between 2% and 5% is seen as vital.

The percentage of body fat is not a clear indicator for health. A body weight and a percentage of body fat, which are too high, are related to many diseases of civilization such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, etc. A lack of exercise and the wrong diet are the most common causes for these diseases. There is a clear causal connection between being overweight and a lack of exercise.

A significant part of the human body consists of water. This body water has a different distribution throughout the body. Lean muscle tissue contains about 75% water, blood approx. 83% water, body fat approx. 25% water and the bones have a water percentage of about 22% . Water makes up approx. 60% of men's body mass. The value for women is about 55% (due to the higher percentage of body fat). Of this total amount of body water, approx. two thirds are stored in the cells and is therefore called intracellular water. The remaining third is extracellular water.
