General Power Tool Safety Warnings Read all safety warnings and all instructions. Failure to follow the warnings and instructions may result in elec- tric shock, fire and/or serious injury. Save all warnings and instructions for future reference. The term “power tool” in the warnings refers to your mains-operated (corded) power tool or battery-operated (cordless) power tool.

a) Keep work area clean and well lit. Clut- tered or dark areas invite accidents. b) Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases, or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes. c) Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distrac- tions can cause you to lose control.

2) Electrical safety

a) Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce the risk of electric shock. b) Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces, such as pipes, radia- tors, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded. c) Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock. d) Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock. e) When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for out- door use. Use of a cord suitable for out- door use reduces the risk of electric shock. f) If operating a power tool in a damp loca- tion is unavoidable, use a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) or an earth leakage circuit breaker (ELCB). Use of a GFCI or an ELCB reduces the risk of elec- tric shock.

a) Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influ- ence of drugs, alcohol, or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious per- sonal injury. b) Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection. Protective equipment such as dusk mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat or hearing protec- tion used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries. c) Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the off position before connecting to power source and/or bat- tery pack, picking up or carrying the tool. Carrying power tools with your finger on the switch or energizing power tools that have the switch on invites accidents. d) Remove any adjusting key or wrench be- fore turning the power tool on. A wrench or a key that is left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in per- sonal injury. e) Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better control of the power tool in un- expected situations. f) Dress properly. Do not wear loose cloth- ing or jewelry. Keep your hair, clothing, and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewelry, or long hair can be caught in moving parts. Use of dust collection can reduce dust-related hazards.

4) Power tool use and care

a) Do not force the power tool. Use the cor- rect power tool for your application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it is de- signed. b) Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on or off. Any power tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired. c) Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or the battery pack from the power tool before making any adjust- ments, changing accessories, or storing power tools. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally. d) Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfa- miliar with the power tool or these in- structions to operate the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users. e) Maintain power tools. Check for mis- alignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condi- tion that may affect the power tool’s op- eration. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools. f) Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Prop- erly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control. g) Use the power tool, accessories, tool bits etc. in accordance with these in- structions, taking into account the work- ing conditions and the work to be per- formed. Use of the power tool for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.

a) Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only iden- tical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is main- tained. Power Tool-specific Safety Warnings f This power tool is to be used as a grinder. Observe all safety warnings, instructions, il- lustrations and specifications provided with this power tool. Failure to follow all in- structions listed below may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury. f This power tool is not suitable for sanding with sanding discs, working with wire brushs, polishing and cut-off grinding. Op- erations for which the power tool is not de- signed may create a hazard and cause per- sonal injury. f Do not use accessories which are not spe- cifically designed and recommended by the tool manufacturer. Just because the acces- sory can be attached to your power tool, it does not assure safe operation. f The rated speed of the accessory must be at least equal to the maximum speed marked on the power tool. Accessories running fast- er than their rated speed can break and fly apart. f The outside diameter of the accessory must correspond with the dimension details of your power tool. Incorrectly sized accesso- ries cannot be adequately guarded or con- trolled. f Diamand cup wheels and flanges must prop- erly fit the grinding spindle of your power tool. Accessories that do not exactly fit on the grinding spindle of the power tool will run out of balance, vibrate excessively and may cause loss of control. OBJ_BUCH-653-001.book Page 5 Thursday, January 24, 2008 4:21 PM6 | English 3 609 929 B60 | (24.1.08) Bosch Power Tools f Do not use a damaged accessory. Before each use, inspect diamond cup wheels for chips and cracks, wear or excessive wear. If power tool or accessory is dropped, inspect for damage or install an undamaged acces- sory. After inspecting and installing an ac- cessory, position yourself and bystanders away from the plane of the rotating acces- sory and run the power tool at maximum no- load speed for one minute. Damaged acces- sories will normally break apart during this test time. f Wear personal protective equipment. De- pending on application, use face shield, safe- ty goggles or safety glasses. As appropriate, wear dust mask, hearing protectors, gloves and workshop apron capable of stopping small abrasive or workpiece fragments. The eye protection must be capable of stopping flying debris generated by various operations. The dust mask or respirator must be capable of filtrating particles generated by your opera- tion. Prolonged exposure to high intensity noise may cause hearing loss. f Keep bystanders a safe distance away from the work area. Anyone entering the work area must wear personal protective equip- ment. Fragments of the workpiece or of a broken accessory may fly away and cause in- jury beyond the immediate area of operation. f Hold the power tool only by the insulated gripping surfaces when performing an oper- ation where the cutting tool may contact hidden wiring or its own power cord. Con- tact with a “live” wire will also make exposed metal parts of the power tool “live” and shock the operator. f Position the cord clear of the spinning ac- cessory. If you lose control, the cord may be cut or snagged and your hand or arm may be pulled into the spinning accessory. f Never lay the power tool down until the accessory has come to a complete stop. The spinning accessory may grab the surface and pull the power tool out of your control. f Do not run the power tool while carrying it at your side. Accidental contact with the spinning accessory could snag your clothing, pulling the accessory into your body. f Regularly clean the the air vents of the power tool. The fan of the motor will draw dust inside the housing and excessive accu- mulation of powdered metal may cause electrical hazards. f Do not operate the power tool near flam- mable materials. Sparks could ignite these materials. f Do not use accessories that require liquid coolants. Using water or other liquid cool- ants may result in electrocution or shock. f Use only diamond cup wheels that are recommended for your power tool and the specific guard and extraction hood de- signed for your power tool. Grinding acces- sories not intended for the power tool can- not be adequately guarded and are unsafe. f The guard and extraction hood must be safely attached to the power tool. The guard and extraction hood help to protect the oper- ator from broken cup wheel fragments and accidental contact with the cup wheel. f Diamand cup wheels must be used only for recommended applications. For example: Do not grind with the edge of the diamond cup wheel. Diamand cup wheels are intended for material removal with the bottom side of the diamond segments. Lateral forces applied to these cup wheels may cause them to shatter. f Always use undamaged mounting flanges that are of correct size and shape for your selected diamond cup wheel. Suitable flang- es support the diamond cup wheel, thus reducing the possibility of breakage. f Do not use worn down diamond cup wheels from larger power tools. Diamand cup wheels intended for larger power tools are not suitable for the higher speeds of a smaller tool and may burst. OBJ_BUCH-653-001.book Page 6 Thursday, January 24, 2008 4:21 PMEnglish | 7 Bosch Power Tools 3 609 929 B60 | (24.1.08) Kickback and related warnings f Kickback is a sudden reaction to a pinched or snagged rotating wheel, backing pad, brush or any other accessory. Pinching or snagging causes rapid stalling of the rotating accessory which in turn causes the uncontrolled power tool to be forced in the direction opposite of the accessory’s rotation at the point of the binding. For example, if an abrasive wheel is snagged or pinched by the workpiece, the edge of the wheel that is entering into the pinch point can dig into the surface of the material causing the wheel to climb out or kick out. The wheel may either jump toward or away from the operator, depending on direction of the wheel’s move- ment at the point of pinching. Abrasive wheels may also break under these conditions. Kickback is the result of power tool misuse and/or incorrect operating procedures or con- ditions and can be avoided by taking proper precautions as given below. f Maintain a firm grip on the power tool and position your body and arm to allow you to resist kickback forces. Always use auxiliary handle, if provided, for maximum control over kickback or torque reaction during start-up. The operator can control torque reactions or kickback forces, if proper pre- cautions are taken. f Never place your hand near the rotating accessory. The accessory may kickback over your hand. f Do not position your body in the area where the power tool will move if kickback occurs. Kickback will propel the tool in the direction opposite to the wheel’s movement at the point of snagging. f Use special care when working corners, sharp edges, etc. Avoid bouncing and snag- ging the accessory. Corners, sharp edges or bouncing have a tendency to snag the rotat- ing accessory and cause loss of control or kickback. Additional safety warnings Wear safety goggles. f Use suitable detectors to determine if utili- ty lines are hidden in the work area or call the local utility company for assistance. Contact with electric lines can lead to fire and electric shock. Damaging a gas line can lead to explosion. Penetrating a water line causes property damage or may cause an electric shock. f Do not touch diamond cup wheels before they have cooled. Diamand cup wheels be- come very hot while working. f When working stone, use dust extraction. The vacuum cleaner must be approved for the extraction of stone dust. Using this equipment reduces dust-related hazards. f When working with the power tool, always hold it firmly with both hands and provide for a secure stance. The power tool is guided more secure with both hands. f Secure the workpiece. A workpiece clamped with clamping devices or in a vice is held more secure than by hand. f Keep your workplace clean. Blends of mate- rials are particularly dangerous. Dust from light alloys can burn or explode. f Do not use the power tool with a damaged cord. Do not touch the damaged cord and pull the plug from the outlet when the cord is damaged while working. Damaged cords increase the risk of an electric shock. Touch- ing or breathing-in the dusts can cause aller- gic reactions and/or lead to respiratory infec- tions of the user or bystanders. Certain dusts, such as oak or beech dust, are considered as carcinogenic, especially in connection with wood-treatment additives (chromate, wood preservative). Materials containing asbestos may only be worked by specialists. – To achieve a high degree of dust extrac- tion, use the GAS 50 MS vacuum cleaner for mineral dust together with this power tool. – Provide for good ventilation of the work- ing place. – It is recommended to wear a P2 filter- class respirator. Observe the relevant regulations in your country for the materials to be worked. The vacuum cleaner must be approved for the extraction of masonry dust. Bosch provides suit- able vacuum cleaners. Insert a vacuum hose 4 (accessory) into the vac- uum connection 2. Connect the vacuum hose 4 to a vacuum cleaner (accessory). An overview for connecting to a vacuum cleaner can be found at the end of these instructions. Notes for the Use of Concrete Grinders Please observe the following notes in order to re- duce the dust emissions occurring while working. – Only use combinations of diamond cutting discs, concrete grinders with mounted guard and extraction hood as well as dust category M vacuum cleaners that are recommended by Bosch. Other combinations can lead to in- sufficient dust collection and separation. – Observe the operating instructions of the vac- uum cleaner for maintenance and cleaning of the vacuum cleaner, including the filter. Emp- ty dust collection containers immediately once full. Clean the filters of the vacuum cleaner regularly and always insert the filters completely into the vacuum cleaner. – Only use vacuum hoses as intended for by Bosch. Do not manipulate the vacuum hose. When rocks or chunks of stone/masonry are drawn into the vacuum hose, cease work and clean the vacuum hose immediately. Prevent the vacuum hose from being bent or creased. – Use the concrete grinder only as intended for. – Observe the general requirements for con- struction sites. – Provide for good ventilation. – Ensure that the work area is free of obstruc- tions. For longer grinding jobs, the vacuum cleaner must be able to move along freely and at the right time. – Wear hearing protection, protective goggles, dust mask and gloves as required. As dust mask, use at least a particle-filtering class FFP 2 half-mask. – Use a suitable vacuum cleaner for cleaning the workplace. Prevent settled dust from be- ing swirled up by sweeping. The grinding tool must be mounted properly and be able to move freely. Carry out a test run for at least one minute with no load. Do not use damaged, out-of-center or vibrating grinding tools. Damaged grinding tools can burst and cause injuries. OBJ_BUCH-653-001.book Page 10 Thursday, January 24, 2008 4:21 PMEnglish | 11 Bosch Power Tools 3 609 929 B60 | (24.1.08) Restarting protection The restarting protection feature prevents un- controlled restarting of the machine after an interruption in the power supply. To restart the operation, switch the On/Off switch 6 to the Off position and start the ma- chine again. Note: Check the function of the restarting pro- tection feature regularly by having the mains plug pulled during operation and plugged in again afterwards. Reduced starting current The electronic reduced starting current limits the power consumption when switching the tool on and enables operation from a 16 ampere fuse. Constant Electronic Control Constant electronic control holds the speed constant at no-load and under load, and ensures uniform working performance. Overload Protection When overloaded, the motor comes to a stop. Relieve the load on the machine immediately and allow to cool down for approx. 30 seconds at the highest no-load speed. Working Instructions f Clamp the workpiece if it does not remain stationary due to its own weight. f Do not strain the power tool so heavily that it comes to a standstill. f Do not touch diamond cup wheels before they have cooled. Diamand cup wheels be- come very hot while working. Apply the power tool to the workpiece only when switched on. Move the machine with a circular motion or al- ternately in length and crosswise direction over the workpiece/surface applying moderate pres- sure. For removal of coatings, the machine can also be guided at a small angle to the workpiece surface without a reduction of the dust extrac- tion capacity. Maintenance and Service Maintenance and Cleaning f Before any work on the power tool itself, pull the mains plug.

For safe and prop er working, always keep the power tool and the ventilation slots clean. f In extreme working conditions, conductive dust can accumulate in the interior of the power tool when working with metal. The protective insulation of the power tool can be degraded. The use of a stationary extrac- tion system is recommended in such cases as well as frequently blowing out the venti- lation slots and installing a ground fault cir- cuit interrupter (GFCI). A blunt diamond cup wheel 11 can be reground by briefly grinding abrasive material (e.g. lime- sand brick). Changing the Brush Collar To ensure optimal dust extraction, change a worn brush collar 8 in good time. Using a screwdriver, carefully pry out the brush collar 8 at the openings of the brush guide with the diamond cup wheel 11 mounted. Use the di- amond cup wheel for leverage while prying out. Carefully push a new brush collar 8 to the stop into the brush guide. When inserting the new brush collar, pay attention that the ends of the brush collar are not positioned in one of the openings of the brush guide. Service Indicator 5 When the carbon brushes are worn out, the power tool switches itself off. This is indicated approx. 8 hours beforehand by the lighting or blinking of the service indicator 5. The power tool must then be sent to an after-sales service agent. Addresses are listed in the Section “After-sales Service and Customer Assistance”. If the power tool should fail despite the care taken in manufacturing and testing procedures, repair should be carried out by an after-sales service center for Bosch power tools. In all correspondence and spare parts orders, please always include the 10-digit article num- ber given on the type plate of the power tool.
