THE FUNCTION BUTTONS

The control panel and the touch sensitive sensor buttons as well as the connection port for the air extraction hose.
The control light of the Pulse Vacuum, Vacuum & Seal, Manual Seal, Memory, Marinate, Canister as well as the Pulse Blow button lights up depending on which function you have activated by touching the corresponding button. Once a function has been completed, the corresponding control light goes out.
The settings above the Vacuum ("Normal" or "Gentle"), Food ("Dry" or "Moist") and Weld ("Double" or "Single") button light up as well. Once the appliance is connected to the power mains, the standard settings "Gentle" (above the Vacuum button) and "Dry" (above the Food button) as well as "Single" (above the Weld button) light up and indicate that the appliance is in standby mode.
A Pulse Vacuum
- As long as you touch this button, the appliance vacuums and the blue button surround as well as the LEDs of the progress indicator light up. If you let go of the button, the vacuuming process stops, the blue button surround goes out. This manual vacuum function is ideal for food or items that are very pressure-sensitive, as the vacuuming process can be stopped at any time. Sealing is not done automatically, instead it has to be activated with the Manual Seal button.
B Cancel
- Touching this button during use immediately stops the vacuuming resp. sealing or marinating process.
C Vacuum & Seal
- Button with blue button surround, first starts the vacuuming process and automatically seals afterwards. During the extraction process, only the Vacuum & Seal control light lights up, once the sealing process starts as well, the Manual Seal light lights up additionally. Once both processes are finished, both lights go out one after the other.
D Progress Indicator
- You can tell the status of the currently chosen function from the number of blue-lit dots. When all six dots light up blue and then go out, the selected function is completed. This will also be reported by a sound signal.
E Manual Seal
Button with blue button surround and two functions:
- For manually sealing film bags, e.g. if you want to make a bag and are required to seal one bag end first.
- For stopping the vacuuming process and immediately sealing the bag in Vacuum & Seal function. Example: if you have selected the Vacuum & Seal function and notice the pressure getting too high for the loods in the bag during automatic vacuuming, you can immediately stop the motor pump and start the sealing process by touching the Manual Seal button.
F Memory
- The memory function automatically saves the settings made most recently in every function except the Marinate and Canister functions. Thanks to this Memory function, it's enough to just push the start lever and the appliance starts working according the most recent settings. In the Pulse Vacuum and Pulse Blow settings, even the operating time of the appliance is stored. If the Memory function is eligible for usage, the blue button surround of the Memory button lights up. The memory is wiped if the appliance is disconnected from the power mains or if the Memory function is disabled by a touch of the Memory button.

H Canister
- Button with blue button surround, for vacuuming a Solis container, wine bottle seals or the reusable vacuum bags using the included air extraction hose. If you connect the accessories to the connection port via the air extraction hose and touch the Canister button, the air is sucked out, forming a vacuum. Caution: Please use exclusively the original Solis accessory parts and the original air extraction hose (attached to the appliance resp. included in the delivered accessories).
Vacuum
- Use this button to set the extraction speed to Normal or to Gentle. A green light lights up next to the setting you chose, the standard setting is Gentle.
Gentle: Choose Gentle if you want the extraction speed to be gentle during the vacuuming process, e.g. when handling pressure-sensitive foods. Gentle is the standard setting that lights up once the appliance is plugged in. It is suitable for all sensitive foods.
Normal: Choose Normal if you want the extraction speed to be rather high when vacuuming. Normal is suitable for all less sensitive foods.
GB
Food
- With this button you can adjust the sealing process to vacuum sealing dry or wet foods. The green light illuminates when the corresponding function is selected, the standard setting is Dry.
Dry: Select Dry if you wish to seal dry foods. Dry is the standard setting that illuminates once the appliance is plugged in.
Moist: Select Moist if you wish to seal moist foods like e.g. fresh meat.
K Weld
The Weld function allows you to choose between a single and a double weld. Single: Only one weld is applied, which is enough for classic, dry foods.
Double: Two welds are applied, meaning the seal will hold even better. Recommended for vacuum sealing moist foods.
L Pulse Blow
- The blowing function Pulse Blow blows air into the bag for as long as you touch the button. You can either touch the button until enough air is in the bag and then touch the Manual Seal button to seal the bag or touch the button for 90 seconds until the blowing process stops automatically. The appliance will then seal the bag automatically. Use the Pulse Blow function to make air cushion bags, e.g. for storing or mailing fragile items. The standard weld setting in the Pulse Blow function is the Single weld. Even if the appliance has been previously set to Double, it will automatically switch back to Single if the Pulse Blow button is touched.
3 Connection port for air extraction hose
- To vacuum Solis accessories, one end of the air extraction hose has to be connected to this port while the other is connected to the Solis accessory.
In general, please note:
- Always make the desired settings before placing the bag end in the vacuum bay.
- To start the automatic vacuuming and sealing process resp. the sealing process, the bag end has to be pushed all the way into the vacuum bay. Then, select the desired function and activate it by pushing the lever for starting and locking down. The Pulse Vacuum and Pulse Blow functions are started by touching the corresponding buttons.
- When a selected function has been finished and all six dots on the progress indicator light up, it roughly takes 3 more seconds for the vacuum to be lifted and a signal to sound. Only then can you remove the bag resp. take off the air extraction hose.
Please note that it takes roughly 3 seconds for the buttons to respond and the appliance to become operational again after a process has been regularly completed or manually cancelled. - All LEDs on the control panel go out three minutes after the last function has been used. Touch any button to reactivate them.
STARTING UP
Caution: Always make sure that both the appliance as well as the containers / bags are absolutely clean and without damage before starting up to make sure that the foods are not contaminated.
PREPARING THE APPLIANCE
- SETTING THE APPLIANCE
GB
Place the appliance on a sufficiently large, horizontal, clean, moisture resistant and dry work surface. Keep in mind that you will need some space for the food-filled bags you wish to vacuum seal.
Plug the power plug into a suitable power outlet. Briefly, all buttons and control lights light up. After a moment, only the Gentle, Dry and Single control lights light up.
- MAKING ADJUSTMENTS
Once the appliance is connected to the power mains, you should make the desired adjustments. To do that, touch the corresponding function buttons.
3.1 Adjusting the evacuation speed with the Vacuum (I) button
To make vacuuming easier for you, the evacuation speed can be adjusted to the food you wish to process. The standard setting is Gentle for pressure-sensitive foods. If you want to seal normal robust foods, you should choose the Normal function by touching the Vacuum (I) button. Evacuation is now performed quicker. You can follow the vacuum process at all times and, if necessary, start sealing whenever you want by touching the Manual Seal (E) button.
3.2 Adjusting the sealing process with the Food (J) button
With the Solis VertiVac Plus vacuum sealer, you can adjust the sealing process to the moisture content of the food. You can choose between Dry and Moist to always get a perfectly sealed weld.
Dry, the standard setting, is ideal for dry foods like e.g. biscuits, rice or coffee. For slightly wet foods, touch the Food (J) button to switch to the Moist setting, which is especially well suited to all foods that contain moisture (like e.g. red meat or fish). Please refer to the notes given in the chapter "Tips for optimal vacuuming" in this manual when processing foods with a high moisture content.
3.3 Adjusting the weld with the Weld (K) button
With the Solis VertiVac Plus vacuum sealer, you can choose between a Single and a Double weld.
The Single weld is the standard setting and ideally suited to normal, dry foods. If you require a double weld, e.g. when vacuuming moist foods, touch the Weld (K) button to switch to the Double setting.
4. TIPS FOR USING THE VACUUM BAGS
There are differently sized Solis bags or vacuum films, allowing you to determine the bag size yourself. Always choose a bag size that fits the food. Keep in mind that the bag should be at least 8 cm larger than the food you wish to seal and add another 2 cm for the weld.
Note: If you're using ready-to-use vacuum bags, you can jump to page 139 of this manual.
WELDING A BAG FROM VACUUM FILM: MANUAL SEAL FUNCTION (E)
- Open the appliance cover (1) and clip the cutting bar (8) upwards. Place the vacuum film roll in the storage chamber (7) (see fig. 1) and pull the end of the film towards you.
- Then, fold the cutting bar (8) back down, the film now lies beneath it (see fig. 2).
Warning: When folding the cutting bar down, please ensure that the blade lever is either to the far right or the far left of the cutting bar. It must not be in the middle, otherwise it won't cut the film properly (see fig.2).
- Pull the film until it is the correct length for the necessary bag and slide the blade lever in one stroke to the left or right to the other end of the rail (see fig. 3).
Now you can seal one end of the bag.
- Close the appliance lid.
- If required, use the double seal by touching the Weld button, so that the Double control light lights up (Single is the standard setting for a single weld).
- Touch the Manual Seal (E) button, to choose the sealing process.

- Place an open bag end in the vacuum bay. Push the bag end all the way into the vacuum bay until you can feel it hit a stop to make sure that the seal is even (See Fig. 4).
- Briefly push the start lever down to start the sealing process. The blue button surround next to Manual Seal lights up. The progress indicator (D) indicates the welding status (see Fig. 5). Once the sealing process is finished, the button surround and the progress indicator go out and a signal sound. Remove the bag with the sealed end.
- Make sure that the weld is straight and without creases (see Fig. 6). Should this not be the case, cut the weld off and repeat the process.

VACUUMING AND SEALING A BAG AUTOMATICALLY: FUNCTION VACUUM & SEAL (C)

Fig. 10
- Place the fresh food into the bag. Please use the original Solis vacuum bags or vacuum foil exclusively to avoid damage to the appliance and to ensure best results.
For item-numbers and descriptions, please read the enclosed order form. You can purchase accessories for your vacuum sealer in good stores or you get them from Solis. You can find the contact addresses at the end of this manual. - Clean the inside and outside of the open bag end and wipe out the creases. The end has to be free of dust and without creases.
- Check the settings of the Vacuum, Food and Weld button according to the control lights. With Vacuum, you can set the speed at which the vacuum is formed. If you want the vacuum pressure to be formed at normal speed, choose the Normal setting. If the foods are pressure-sensitive, you can choose to have the vacuum pressure formed slowly (choose Gentle setting). With Food, you can choose between Dry and Moist, depending on whether the food is dry (choose Dry setting) or has some moisture (choose Moist setting). With Weld, you can choose between a Single weld or a Double weld. The standard settings are Gentle, Dry and Single (see Fig. 7).
- Now, touch the Vacuum & Seal (C) button.
- Place the open end of the bag in the vacuum bay. Caution: The end of the bag has to be pushed all the way into the bay (see Fig. 8)!
-
To start the desired function, the start lever has to be briefly pushed down first. Only this will activate the selected function and lock the vacuum chamber (see Fig.9).
-
The appliance now vacuums and seals the bag automatically. During the vacuum process, only the blue button surround of Vacuum & Seal (C) lights up. Once the sealing process starts, the Manual Seal (E) button surround lights up as well. You can follow the process with the progress indicator (D) (see Fig. 10). Wait for the button surrounds and the progress indicator (D) to go out and the signal to sound, then the process is completed.
- Now, check the new weld again to make sure it is straight and without creases (see Fig. 11). Should this not be the case, repeat the process after having cut off the weld.
Note: The appliance creates a fairly high vacuum pressure in the bag. Should this high pressure crush fragile foods, keep an eye on the vacuum pressure in the bag during the vacuum process and touch the Manual Seal (E) button once the desired vacuum has been reached. The appliance immediately deactivates the evacuation pump for vacuuming and starts sealing the bag.
Caution: Should you notice that the evacuation pump does not suck any air out of the bag, touch the Cancel button and place the bag in the vacuum bay once again. It is important that the bag is pushed in straight and all the way to the end. This is to make sure that it reaches into the vacuum chamber. Proceed as described in steps 6, through 8.
GOOD TO KNOW:
- In order for the appliance to perform best, it should be left for at least 1 minute to cool before you inserting the next bag. Wipe away potentially escaped liquid on the vacuum opening after each use.
- If you perform too many sealing processes in a row you might trigger the thermo safety feature of the sealing bar. You have to allow the appliance to cool down before continuing to use it.
Only Solis vacuum bags or foils should be used, please do not use any other bags in order to achieve optimal results and prevent damage to the appliance. Defects caused by the use of improper accessories and supplies have to be fixed at the owner's expense even within the warranty period.
There are Solis vacuum bags in different sizes or vacuum bag film with which you can set the bag size. Always choose a bag size appropriate for the food. Keep in mind that the bag should be at least 8cm larger than the food and you will need an additional 2cm for the seal.
For item numbers and descriptions, please refer to the enclosed order form. You can find accessories for you vacuum sealer in good stores or you get them from Solis. You can find the contact addresses at the end of this manual.
CONTROLLED VACUUMING AND MANUAL SEALING: THE FUNCTIONS PULSE VACUUM (A) AND MANUAL SEAL (E)
The appliance creates a fairly high vacuum pressure in the bag. If you wish to vacuum seal pressure sensitive foods like e.g. pastry, we recommend using the Pulse Vacuum (A) function to evacuate the bag and then using the Manual Seal (E) function to weld it shut. This makes supervising the vacuuming process even easier, allowing you to prevent the foods from being damaged.
- Place one end of the bag in the vacuum bay. Caution: The end of the bag has to be pushed all the way into the bay.
- Now touch the Pulse Vacuum button. The blue button surround of Pulse Vacuum lights up. The bag end is locked into the vacuum bay and the evacuation process is started. The pump sucks out air for as long as you touch the Pulse Vacuum button.
- Let go of the Pulse Vacuum button once the vacuum in the bag is strong enough. Briefly touch the Manual Seal button to start the welding process. The weld is applied according to the settings (Moist/Dry or Single/Double), please refer to the chapter "Making adjustments". You can follow the progress using the progress indicator (D). Wait for the button surround and the progress indicator to go out and the signal to sound. The process has completed.
- Double check the new weld to make sure it is straight and without creases. Should this not be the case, repeat the process after cutting off the old weld.
VACUUMING SOLIS CONTAINERS WITH LID: CANISTER FUNCTION (H)
Caution: Please use only the containers and the air extraction hose manufactured by Solis for this appliance. Only these containers are designed to withstand the negative pressure created by the Solis VertiVac Plus vacuum sealer.
The accessories for your vacuum sealer are available from good specialist retailer or Solis. A contact address can be found at the end of this manual.

MARINATING WITH THE MARINATING FUNCTION AND THE SQUARE SOLIS CONTAINERS: FUNCTION MARINATE (G)
Marinating using the marinate function is best suited with meat or fish, to spice and allow it to tenderise. Thanks to the Solis VertiVac Plus marinate-function, you can quickly marinate meat or fish effectively, in just a few minutes, since the vacuum allows the marinade to penetrate deeper into the food. The vacuum function maintains a vacuum for several minutes, then releases air, allowing the food to 'rest' for several seconds. This process will be repeated several times - you will see how well the fish or meat absorbs the marinade. The whole marinating process takes only a few minutes.
- Prick the meat / poultry / fish a few times with a fork. Place the meat / fish in the square Solis container (1.0 or 2.8 L). Cover the meat / fish with the marinade and leave at least 3cm distance between the food and the upper edge of the container. Close the container with the correct lid (see Fig.20).
Take the air extraction hose, which is included with the appliance resp. the Solis container set. Plug one end of the hose into the air extraction port (3) of the appliance and the other end into the opening on the container lid (see Fig.21). - Adjust the extraction speed to the foods in the container with the Vacuum (I) button: Normal for robust foods, Gentle for pressure sensitive foods. The corresponding control light illuminates.
- Touch the Marinate (G) button, the marinating process begins and lasts a few minutes. The appliance will switch off automatically after the last marinating cycle is completed. You can follow the progress with the progress indicator (D). Wait for the button surrounds and the progress indicator (D) to go out and the signal to sound, then the process is completed.
- Remove the air extraction hose (10), first from the container, then from the appliance.

If you wish to end the marinating process early, simply touch the Cancel (B) button. If you wish to start the marinating process again, simply press the Marinate (G) button once more and the marinating process will start again.
Note: Always ensure that the seal of the lid and the edge of the containers are completely clean and dry.
- To open the lid of the container, press the button right beside the air extraction opening, so that the vacu um pressure is released. You will hear a slight hissing sound as the air passes back into the container. This hiss guarantees that there was an air vacuum in the container.
INFLATING THE BAG AND SEALING IT TO MAKE AN AIR CUSHION: PULSE BLOW FUNCTION (L)
If you want to make air cushions, e.g. to make packaging material for pressure sensitive or fragile items, you can use the Pulse Blow function to do that.
- Place one bag end in the vacuum bay. Caution: The bag end has to be pushed all the way into the bay.
- Touch the Pulse Blow (L) button. The blue Pulse Blow button surround lights up. The bag end is now locked into the vacuum bay and the inflation process starts. The pump blows air into the bag for as long as you touch the Pulse Blow button.
Note: The standard setting for the Pulse Blow function is the Single weld. Even if the Double weld is preset, the appliance automatically switches back to Single once the Pulse Blow button is touched.
- When the bag is sufficiently filled with air, let go of the Pulse Blow button and briefly touch the Manual Seal (E) button to start the welding process. You can follow the progression with the progress indicator (D). Wait for the button surround and the progress indicator to go out and the signal to sound. The process has completed.
- Double check the new weld to make sure it is straight and without creases. Should this not be the case, repeat the process after cutting off the old weld.
Note: The Pulse Blow function stops after 90 seconds, automatically starting the welding process, even if you keep the button pressed.
TIPS FOR OPTIMAL VACUUMING
- Do not overfill the bag. Always leave enough empty space in the open end of the bag so that the bag end can be pushed into the vacuum chamber unproblematically and without wrinkles or waves forming. Calculate for 8cm of space between bag contents and bag end plus 2cm for the weld and 2,5cm for every planned opening and re-vacuuming.
- The open end of the bag should not be wet, as wet bags cannot be firmly sealed. If the foods contain moisture or if the inside of the bag is wet, select the functions Moist and Double. This increases the welding time resp. doubles the weld, improving the weld quality.
- Clean the open bag end and pull it straight, before you seal it. Make sure that there is no food residue on the end of the bag and that there are no creases in the end of the bag. The sealed seam must be completely smooth, otherwise it will not be airtight.
- Never leave too much air in the bag. Press on the bag a little to get most of the air out before vacuuming. Too much air in the bag means more work for the extraction pump, which could overload the motor. The consequence could be that not all of the air is vacuumed out of the bag.
- Do not vacuum foods with sharp edges in the bags, such as e.g. fish bones and mussels. The sharp edges can cut through the film so that it is no longer airtight. To vacuum such foods we recommend using a container instead of a plastic bag. Alternatively you can cover the sharp edges and ends with folded kitchen paper so that it cannot damage the bag or poke holes in it.
- If you perform too many welding processes in a row, you might trigger the thermo safety feature of the sealing bar. In that case, the appliance has to cool down before you can continue using it.
- If for some reason the necessary vacuum pressure is not reached after approx. one minute, the appliance automatically switches off. In this case, please check if the bag / the container has a leak, if the bag end is not clean and straightly inserted into the vacuum bay resp. vacuum chamber up to the end stop or what else might be the reason.
- Always make sure that the seals around the vacuum chamber are clean and without deformations or tears. In the first case, clean and dry the seals (the lower one can be removed), in the second case replace them with new ones.
-
Small amounts of liquid, crumbs or food particles might get sucked into the vacuum chamber, block the extraction pump and damage your appliance. To avoid this, we recommend freezing moist or juicy foods before vacuum sealing them or placing a folded kitchen paper in the bag as packing beneath the weld. Also freeze soups or liquid foods in bags or Solis containers before vacuum sealing them. When vacuum sealing powdery or finely ground foods, do not overfill the bag and place a sheet of kitchen paper as a seal in the bag before vacuoming it.
-
In general fruits should be pre-frozen and vegetables blanched before vacuuming in order to achieve best results.
- Delicate foods such as pastries or berries should be vacuumed in Solis containers. Alternatively, freeze the food 24 hours before vacuuming in a bag.
- Fluids must always be cooled before vacuuming. Hot liquids foam or form bubbles and increase in volume if they are vacuumed. Note: Use only our Solis containers for vacuuming.
- Keep perishable foods in the freezer or fridge. Vacuum packing extends the life of food, but does not turn it into a "preserve", e.g. a stable product at ambient temperature.
- Fill a bag 2/3 full with water, seal the end of the bag (do no vacuum!) and lay the bag in the freezer. You can use the ice for cooling drinks but also for sporting injuries.
- Many foods are already vacuum packed when bought. With our vacuum sealer, you can vacuum them again (in Solis bags!), if the packaging has been opened, so that it stays fresh and retains its full flavour. However, these foods should still be consumed up until the date printed on the original packaging.
- Cereals such as flour, rice and cake mixes stay fresh longer if they are vacuum packed. Nuts and spices hold their flavour better and will not go rancid. Ideal for long journeys.
- Freshly washed salads can be vacuumed in a Solis container and kept in the refrigerator for up to a week - so there is always fresh and crispy salad to hand at meal times. If you line the container with a sheet of kitchen paper it will absorb excess moisture.
- Powdered or small grain foods can be vacuumed in Solis containers, if kitchen paper is placed on top of the food as a barrier so that the powder or grains can not get into the extraction pump or inside the air extraction hose.
- Foods with sharp edges and points, such as bones or dry pasta should be wrapped in kitchen paper so that they can no longer damage the bag or cause punctures.
- You can also vacuum pack more than just food. Camping products such as matches, first aid bandages or clothing stay clean and dry when vacuum packed. Vacuum packed silverware doesn't tarnish, a vacuum packed candle is always advisable.
- The main use of the vacuum sealer is to conveniently keep many foods fresh for longer without losing their flavour. In general you could say that vacuum packing quadruples the shelf life of foods in comparison to traditional storage methods. Once you have enjoyed the advantages of this appliance, it will soon become indispensable to you and you will have to throw much less food away and thereby save money.
Sensible ideas:
a) Cook larger portions in advance and vacuum into individual portions or meals.
b) Vacuum packing is excellent for keeping pre-prepared foods fresh for pick nicks, camping expeditions and barbecues.
c) Vacuum packing reduces freezer burn.
d) Vacuum pack meat, fish, poultry and seafood before you put them in the fridge or freeze them.
e) Also keeps dried fruits, beans, nuts and cereals fresh for longer.
- Vacuum packing enables you to live health consciously, or pre-cooking meals specifically with suitable ingredients if you suffer from allergies; you can weigh ingredients exactly if you want to diet and have to work in an office, or if you would like to take vacuumed home-made meals in, without any hassle.
- You can use the sealing feature to safely store items valuable to you: photos, important documents, stamp collections, credit cards, comics, screws, nails, medicine, plasters - everything is perfectly stored and protected from dirt and moisture if it is air tightly sealed.
Note: Always store the appliance with the release mechanism unlocked after using it. This means that the appliance must always complete the programs it is running and the bag has to be removed from the unlocked vacuum bay.
If the power plug is pulled before the appliance is unlocked resp. a program is deactivated, the seals remain locked and might warp, impairing the functionality of the appliance.
- Always use the freshest possible foods.
- Delicate products such as meat, fish, berries etc. should be pre-frozen so that they are not crushed during vacuuming.
Foods can be frozen for up to 24 hours without freezer burn occurring - this fact is something we will make use of. Ideally food should be split into portions before freezing. As soon as they are frozen (after about 24 hours) vacuum them in Solis vacuum bags and return them to the freezer.
- If you wish to vacuum pack soups, stews or other liquid dishes, then they must be pre-frozen, until they have a solid consistency. Ideally this should be done in a Solis container. After vacuuming the container (or the vacuum bag) can be put back in the freezer.
- The same method applies for products with high fluid content. The infiltration of fluid into the vacuum system can cause damage to the appliance. This is not covered by the guarantee.
- If you wish to vacuum and freeze foods without pre-freezing them, the length of the bag should be 5cm longer than would normally be required since food expands when frozen.
- Fresh vegetables should be cleaned or peeled and before freezing they should be blanched in boiling water (or if necessary a microwave oven can be used). This ensures that the vegetables remain fresh. After allowing the food to cool, it can be split into suitable portions and frozen in Solis vacuum bags.
- If you wish to vacuum and freeze meat or fish without pre-freezing them, then we recommend that you line the Solis vacuum bag or container with kitchen roll so that the kitchen rolls will catch any escaped moisture. Foods that are meant to be vacuum sealed in a number of layers (e.g. hamburgers, crèpes or tortillas) are best placed in the bag resp. Solis container separated by a sheet of baking paper.
DEFROSTING FROZEN SOLIS VACUUM BAGS
Defrosting meat, fish, fruit, vegetables and other delicate foods: These foods should be defrosted slowly in the refrigerator.
Defrosting bread and pastry: These foods can be defrosted at room temperature. If this is the case you should cut open the bag to allow the steam to escape.
Always consume food immediately after defrosting and do not re-freeze.
WHY DO VACUUM PACKED FOODS LAST LONGER?
- Chemical reactions in food with air, ambient temperature and dampness, enzym-reactions, the formation of micro-organisms or contamination by insects can spoil food.
- The main reason why food nutrients lose their firmness and flavour is the oxygen in the air. The formation of micro-organisms is usually caused by air, because this removes the moisture of the foods, on the other hand, it also transports ambient moisture back into the food if they are not hermetically sealed. Frozen foods get in the freezer air, often the freezer burn.
- The vacuuming system removes the air from the packaging. As air consists to roughly 21% of oxygen, this means that practically no oxygen remains in a vacuum sealed bag or container. However in an oxygen content of less than 5% , most microorganisms cannot multiply.
- In general, micro-organisms can be divided into three categories: mould, yeasts and bacteria, they are present everywhere, but can only cause damage in certain conditions.
- In an environment with little air or moisture, mould cannot develop.
- In moisture, sugar and warmth, yeast can spread with or without air, cooling slows the growth of yeast and freezing stops it altogether.
- Bacteria can spread with or without air. One of the most dangerous bacteriums is Clostridium botulinum which can, under certain conditions, spread without air - it only needs a temperature of between 4^ and 46^ . It spreads in food without acid, in environments with little acid and in temperatures that are above 4^ for long periods of time. The bacterium Botulinum cannot do any harm to frozen, dried or acid rich foods or foods with a high salt or sugar content.
The following foods can be lightly infected with Botulinum:
- Acid free foods like meat, seafoods, poultry, fish, eggs and pickled olives
- Foods with little acid like most vegetable
Medium-acid foods like tomatoes, chilli peppers, figs and cucumbers.
For storage, the above-mentioned, compromised foods (the list is not complete) should be placed in the fridge for short storage periods resp. frozen for longer storage periods and be consumed right after heating. Soft cheese, smoked fish, garlic, onions, mushrooms and raw milk should not be vacuum sealed or stored for longer periods of time due to their sensitivity to anaerobic bacteria even under vacuum.
- Soft cheese and smoked fish should not be vacuum sealed, as this can cause the development of anaerobic bacteria of the Listeria species, which in turn can cause food poisoning resp. listeriosis. This also applies to garlic, onions, mushrooms and raw milk.
- Some enzymes in foods can change the colour, texture and flavour of foods, which depends on storage time, storage temperature and oxygen. To prevent this enzyme reaction, vegetable should be blanched or steam cooked for a short time, or cooked in the microwave. Foods with a high acid content such as most fruits, must not be blanched. In this case, vacuum packing is enough to slow or inhibit the enzyme reaction.
- Some dry foods, such as flour and cereals, can contain insect larvae. If the food isn't vacuum packed, these can hatch during storage, making the food inedible. To prevent this these foods should be vacuamed.
- Generally, foods should be stored at low temperatures since most micro-organisms can also spread without air.
- If the temperature in your fridge is above 4^ then this can, most of all during long-term storage, support the growth of dangerous micro-organisms. Therefore the temperature setting in your fridge should be max. 4^ or less.
- If the temperature in your freezer is -18^ or less, it is ideal for storing food, but remember: freezing does not kill micro-organisms, it only slows their growth.
- The shelf life of vacuum packed dried foods is also longer, the cooler the storage temperature is: For every 10^ cooler the storage temperature, the shelf life extends by 3-4 times.
FURTHER TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL VACUUMING:
- Always wash your hands before preparing and vacuuming, equally the materials and appliance which you use, should be absolutely clean.
- As soon as the foods have been vacuumed, put them in the fridge or freezer, do not leave them to sit at room temperature. Make sure that the temperature in the refrigerator or freezer does not increase.
- Vacuum packing extends the shelf life of dried foods, foods with high fat content quickly become rancid in warm temperatures and oxygen. Vacuum packing extends the shelf life of nuts, coconuts or cereals. Store these in a cool, dark place.
- Vacuum packing does not extend the shelf life of fruit and vegetables such as apples, bananas, potatoes and root vegetables, unless they are peeled first!
- Cabbage vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower or cabbage give off gas when vacuum packed fresh for refrigeration. To preserve them, they must be first blanched, then frozen before packing.
WHAT YOU SHOULD GENEALLY KNOW WHEN PROCESSING FOOD:
The following food safety instructions are based on scientific findings and experience and are important for your health and optimal storage of foods:
- As soon as you thaw, or remove foods from the fridge, consume them immediately.
- Canned or ready vacuum packed foods can be vacuum packed again after opening (in Solis bags). Follow the instructions, storing foods in a cool place once opened (not at room temperature!) and treating vacuumed foods just as carefully as fresh foods. Take note of the use by date printed on the original packaging.
- Never defrost foods in warm water or with the help of other heat sources (e.g. microwave), regardless of whether they are vacuum packed or not. Foods are most gently defrosted in the fridge.
- Do not consume highly perishable foods that have been stored for hours at room temperature. This is especially dangerous if they are in a thick sauce, if they are vacuum packed, or if they are kept in a low oxygen environment.
- Distribute vacuum bags evenly in the fridge or freezer so that they cool as quickly as possible.
CLEANING AND CARE
To clean your vacuum sealer, please proceed as follows:
- Always first pull the plug out of the socket.
- Submerge neither the appliance nor the cord or the plug in water or another liquid and do not hold it under running water.
- Do not use aggressive cleaning agents, solvents or abrasive materials for cleaning with appliance, these could damage the surfaces.
- Wipe the appliance with mild cleaning agents and with a soft, damp cloth.
Note: The drip tray can be easily removed for thorough cleaning and be handwashed in warm dish water (see Fig. 22). The drip tray can be accessed by opening the front cover (4) and folding back the upper part of the appliance by simultaneously pushing both release buttons (9). Clean the drip tray in warm dish water, dry it and place it back in the appliance.

- Leave the appliance to completely air dry, before storing or using the appliance.
- The appliance must not be oiled.
Note: You can remove the lower gasket that runs around the vacuum chamber and clean it in warm water, should it be dirty. Let the gasket air-dry completely before reinstalling it at exactly the same position. The gasket has to be correctly installed at all times to prevent air from entering the vacuum chamber. The upper gasket cannot be removed.
POWER CORD STORAGE
If the appliance is not in use, the power cord should be rolled up and placed in the cord compartment on the underside of the appliance. Never wrap the cord around the appliance!
CLEANING VACUUM CONTAINERS
- The containers without the lids can be hand washed in warm, soapy water.
Attention: Do not immerse the lids of the containers into water and don't put them into a dishwasher. The inner cap underside of the container lid can be removed and washed. Clean the lids themselves only with a damp cloth. Allow them to dry thoroughly and re-insert the cap on the underside of the lid. - Allow all accessories to dry completely, before storage or use.
- We recommend, to keep the rubber seals elastic, to rub them from time to time with a few drops of cooking oil.
STORING THE APPLIANCE
Note: Always store the appliance with the release mechanism unlocked after using it. This means that the appliance must always complete the programs it is running and the bag has to be removed from the unlocked vacuum bay.
If the power plug is pulled before the appliance is unlocked resp. a program is deactivated, the seals remain locked and might warp, impairing the functionality of the appliance.
Store the appliance in a flat dark place, out of reach of children, at best in it's original packaging. The vacuum sealer can be stored standing on the appliance base or, to save space, on the side (upright or lengthways) (see Fig. 23).
The latching mechanism must not be locked so that no pressure is put onto the seals. The seals are consumable material and are not covered by warranty.

PROBLEMS AND POSSIBLE CAUSES
THE APPLIANCE DOESN'T WORK
- Check that the plug is plugged into the correct socket.
- Check whether the power cable is damaged. If this is the case, bring the appliance to Solis or a Solis approved service centre to get the cable replaced.
- Check whether the socket is working by connecting another electrical device.
- Check if the bag end is evenly inserted in the vacuum bay resp. vacuum chamber all the way to the end stop.
- Check, if you have pushed the start lever after making adjustments to activate the functions.
- Wait for at least 1 minute before using the appliance again.
- If you perform too many welding processes in a row, you might trigger the thermo safety feature of the sealing bar. In that case, the appliance has to cool down before you can continue using it.
THE APPLIANCE IS NOT SEALING AN EMPTY BAG
Make sure that the end of the bag is correctly placed in the vacuum bay, pushed all the way in and also that the Manual Seal button has been touched and the start lever has been pushed.
THE AIR IS NOT COMPLETELY Sucked OUT OF THE BAG
- To ensure that the bag is firmly sealed, the open end of the bag has to be completely inserted into the vacuum bay resp. vacuum chamber to the end stop without wrinkles.
- Check whether the bag has a hole in it. To do this, seal the bag with some air in it and submerge it in water. If bubbles rise from it, it is leaking, use another bag.
- Use bags and films from Solis exclusively!
- Perhaps the bag is not completely sealed, because of crumbs, fat or liquid in the seal or the bag was not flat and has wrinkles or creases. Open the bag, clean the inside of the bag end and make sure to insert the bag end absolutely evenly and all the way to the end stop into the vacuum bay.
THE APPLIANCE DOES NOT SEAL AFTER VACUUMING
- There is a vacuum pressure sensor inside the appliance. If this pressure is not high enough, the sealing process is not automatically started and the appliance switches off after approx. one minute. Check the vacuum bag for leaks resp. the weld for contamination. Also ensure correct positioning and re-start the appliance.
- Check whether the bag has a hole in it. To do this, seal the bag with some air in it and submerge it in water. If bubbles rise from it, it is leaking, use another bag.
AIR GOES BACK INTO THE BAG AFTER IT HAS BEEN SEATED
- Perhaps the bag is not completely sealed, because of crumbs, fat or liquid in the seal or the bag was not flat and has wrinkles or creases. Open the bag, clean the inside of the bag end and make sure to insert the bag end absolutely evenly and all the way to the end stop into the vacuum bay.
- Some foods produce natural gasses or ferment, such as e.g. fresh fruit and vegetables. If you suspect this to be the case, open the bag and check the food. If it is fermenting, throw the bag away. Temperature fluctuations in refrigerators can also spoil vacuum packed foods. If in doubt, always throw the food away.
- Check if the bag has a hole which has let air in. Sharp edges of foods should be covered or "padded" with folded kitchen paper, so that the edges cannot cause holes.
THE BAG BOILS OR DOES NOT SEAL PROPERLY
Should the sealing bar overheat, the bag can melt. In this case, unplug the appliance and allow these parts to cool for a few minutes. As a basic principle, always keep a 1 minute pause between two vacuuming processes.
THE CONTAINER WILL NOT VACUUM
- Make sure that the extraction hose is firmly connected to the vacuum opening as well as the container lid and push the connection pieces into the openings as far as possible.
- Press down on the lid or the hose connection to ensure that the container is airtight.
- If the container or the adaptor is visibly damaged, change the container or adaptor. Make sure that the container lid is tight all around.
- If fluid leaks from the container during vacuuming, the container and its contents should first be cooled in the fridge.
- Check the functioning of the appliance.
- Check that the edge of the container and the lid are completely dry and that there is 3cm distance between the food and the top edge of the container.
If none of these suggestions apply, please contact Solis or a Solis approved service station.
THE HEXAGONAL CONTAINER IS NOT MAINTAINING A VACUUM
- Check that the control dial is at the "SEAL" position, before, during and after vacuuming.
- Check that the rubber seal is sitting correctly and is undamaged.
THE SQUARE CONTAINER IS NOT MAINTAINING A VACUUM
Check that the rubber seal is sitting correctly and is undamaged.
