When this button is steadily lighting up blue the correct temperature for the brewing process is reached. Use this button to specifically adjust how much coffee you want to brew. As soon as the desired amount has been brewed press the button again to stop the brewing process. NOTES: While using the manual mode only the ON/OFF button and the “manual mode” button will be lit blue. In both automatic and manual mode the machine will pump a bit of water into the portafilter at the start of the brewing process to soak the coffee. After a short break the pump will work steadily.

(ALSO FOR HOT WATER FUNCTION)

To produce steam for frothy milk or heat up a beverage press this button. The button will blink while the machine is heating up. The steam mode is ready as soon as the button is steadily lighting blue.

If you fully turn the steam / hot water control counterclockwise it will start pouring out steam through the steam / hot water outlet. If turned off again, it will stop. NOTE: While the steam function is active only the ON/OFF button lights up blue and the steam mode button is blinking (while heating up) or steadily lights blue (after the preheating is finished).

As long as the steam function is active the buttons for manual and automatic brewing mode will not be lit up and will only light up and be ready to use again after you press the steam mode button again to turn off the steam function. NOTE: The machine will be too hot to brew coffee immediately after using the steam function. This is being indicated by the coffee mode buttons blinking blue after changing back to the brewing function. Wait until the machine has cooled down and the coffee buttons are lighting steadily again, otherwise the coffee will taste slightly burnt. The cooldown process can be sped up by letting out some water through the portafilter (with inserted filter but without ground coffee).

As soon as the machine is turned on using this button all the buttonframes light up blue for one second while the machine is pumping water. Afterwards the ON/OFF button and steam mode button stay lit, while the buttonframes of “automatic mode” and “manual mode” keep blinking as long as the ma- chine is preheating. When the correct temperature for brewing coffee is reached these buttons will also constantly light up blue. The machine is now ready for use.

Pressing the ON/OFF button is accompanied by a signal tone.

When this button is steadily lighting up blue the correct temperature for the brewing process is reached. Press this button to automatically brew coffee. The outlet will stop automatically after 25 seconds. This is the standard adjustment and can be manually shortened or prolonged from 10 seconds up to 60 seconds (view page 121). NOTE: While using the “automatic mode” only the ON/OFF button and the “auto- matic mode” button will be lit blue. TIP: To stop the coffee outlet early press the “automatic mode” button again.111110 GB GB

Carefully remove the appliance from the packaging and remove all stickers, labels (except for the type plate) and packaging materials.

Remove all accessories from the packaging and from the appliance.

Remove the water tank. Clean the water tank, the lid, the plunger, the measuring spoon and the filter inserts as well as the portafilter and the single outlet with warm water and some mild dish washing liquid. Then rinse well and dry.

Also, wipe the casing of the espresso machine and the drip tray with the drip grid clean with a soft, damp cloth and dry everything. CAUTION: The appliance chassis, the power cord and the power plug must never be submerged in or come into contact with water or any other liquid! NOTE: The parts of the espresso machine and the accessories are not dish- washer safe.

Fill the water tank with cold tap water to the MAX marking. Close the lid again.

Reinsert the water tank by hanging both hooks of the water tank into the two black suspension brackets on the appliance back side.

RINSE THE APPLIANCE BEFORE THE FIRST AND EVERY USE To rinse the inner parts of the appliance, you should let the water of the filled water tank run through completely before using it for the first time. Generally, we recommend rinsing the appliance before every use for approx. 20 seconds to warm up all the appliance parts and stabilize the brewing process temperature – like that, the first cup of espresso will be a right and hot pleasure! In both cases, proceed as follows:

Place a filter insert (without ground coffee) in the portafilter and press it into the portafilter to make it lock in.

Insert the portafilter into the brewing group: Hold the portafilter under the brewing head so that the handle is to the left.113112 GB GB NOTE: When water is pumped through the appliance for the first time, air getting into the appliance might cause a slightly louder noise. After approx. 20 seconds the noise will go away.

ESPRESSO MAKING WITH YOUR

SOLIS BARISTA GRAN GUSTO

NOTE: Check the water level in the water tank before every use. Change the water daily. Before every use empty the water tank completely and refill it with fresh cold tap water. Follow the MIN- and MAX-markings on the tank. Do not use any distilled water, soda or other liquids.

Choose the right filter insert: Use the smaller filter for 1 cup and the larger filter for 2 cups. If you want to make a big cup of coffee, please use – depending on the desired intensity – the filter insert for 2 cups and let more water run through.

When using a single smaller cup, screw the single outlet on the portafilter before- hand, to avoid coffee dripping besides the cup. Suited for 2 cups or 1 large cup: double outlet Suited for 1 cup or a smaller cup respectively: single outlet Both outlets can be screwed on or off the portafilter depending on requirements.

Clean the filter insert with a dry cloth.

Put the filter insert into the portafilter and press it in.

Fill the filter insert with ground coffee. Count 1–2 measuring spoons per cup.

Gently tap the portafilter against the worktop so that the ground coffee in the filter insert is spread out evenly. Use the tamper to compress the ground coffee.

After tamping, remove coffee leftovers from the portafilter edge so that it can be correctly attached to the brewing head.

CAUTION: If the rim of the portafilter is not clean, it will not be connected airtight and water can leak out besides the portafilter.

Push the portafilter up against the brewing head and turn the handle counter- clockwise to the right until you feel some resistance and the handle is in a 90° angle to the machine.

Make sure that the steam / hot water control is turned off (Off-position, fully turned clockwise).

Plug the power plug into a suitable wall power outlet.

. As soon as the machine is turned on using this button all the buttonframes light up blue for one second while the machine is pumping water. Afterwards only the ON/OFF button (A) and steam mode button (D) stay lit, while the buttonframes of ”automatic mode“ (B) and ”manual mode“ (C) keep blinking as long as the machine is preheating. When the correct temperature for brewing coffee is reached these buttons will also constantly light up blue. The machine is now ready for use.

Press the steam mode button (D) and wait until it stops blinking. Place a stainless steel container underneath the steam / hot water outlet and turn it outwards. Turn the steam / hot water control (I) counterclockwise to the maximum position and let some steam pour out through the steam / hot water outlet. Afterwards turn off the steam / hot water control (I) and press the steam mode button (D) again to turn off the steam function.

Repeatedly press the ”automatic mode“ button to let the remaining water flow out of the water tank.

Before first use let the entire water of the filled water tank cycle through entirely (empty the container on the drip grid multiple times!). Before every other use letting water flow through for 20 seconds is enough to heat up the parts.

Turn the handle of the portafilter clockwise to the left.

Pull portafilter and filter insert downwards and out. CAUTION: Both parts are hot, do not scald yourself.

The machine is ready for use when all 4 buttons steadily light up blue.115114 GB GB

When the correct temperature is reached these buttons will also constantly light up blue. The machine is now ready for use. Coffee extraction in automatic mode with button To brew coffee in the 25 second standard setting press the ”automatic mode“ but- ton . The machine will first pump water to pre-infuse and then pour freshly brewed espresso out of the outlet into the cup. The brewing process stops after 25 seconds and you can take the cup of coffee. During the automatic mode only the ON/OFF button and the ”automatic mode“ button light up. NOTE: You can individually change the automatic mode to brew for 10 to 60 seconds. How to do that is explained on page 121 in the chapter ”Settings for automatic coffee brewing“. The brewing process in automatic mode can be stopped anytime by pressing the ”automatic mode“ button again. Coffee extraction in manual mode with button If you want to decide every time how strong the coffee shall be or how much you want, press the ”manual mode“ button . The machine will first pump water to pre-infuse and then pour freshly brewed espresso out of the outlet into the cup. Once there is enough coffee in the cup press the ”manual mode“ button again and the brewing process will stop and you can remove the cup.

If you want to brew another cup remove the portafilter, tap the coffee grounds out of the filter insert and rinse the portafilter clean with clear hot water. CAUTION: the portafilter and the filter insert are hot! Afterwards dry the filter insert with a clean towel. The filter insert is now ready for use again.

Attach the portafilter to the brewing group: Hold the portafilter under the brewing head so that the handle is located to the left.

Push the portafilter upwards against the brewing head and turn the handle counterclockwise to the right until you feel some resistance. The handle will then roughly be in a 90 ° angle to the machine.

Place one or two empty cups on the drip tray (best pre-warmed by the previous rinse) under the outlet / the outlets of the portafilter.117116 GB GB CAUTION: Never leave the espresso machine unattended while brewing espresso! Never touch the hot surfaces of the espresso machine. You could scald your- self! The portafilter, the filter insert and the steam / hot water outlet are especially hot during and after use!

The coffeebeans and the timing of grinding them as well as the grade to which the beans are gound are essential for brewing good coffee. We recommend grinding the beans directly before brewing the coffee. The brewing process should last between 25 and 30 seconds. If the beans are ground too coarse the water will flow through too fast and the coffee will be underextracted, leading to a less intensive taste, brighter colour and very thin and white crema. If the beans are ground too fine the water will flow through very slowly, thus overextracting the coffee leading to a very dark colour and no crema. To get a perfect coffee you should grind the beans freshly and adjust the amount of ground coffee to the desired amount of brewed coffee, about 1–2 measuring spoons per cup. Freshness of the beans and prompt grinding are deciding factors for the quality of your coffee. Long storage periods of coffee have a very negative influence.

CAFFE LATTE The stainless steel steam / hot water outlet with steaming nozzle turns fresh, cold milk into creamy, warm, frothy milk to produce a delicious cappuccino or caffe latte. Proceed as follows:

First, make an espresso in a bigger cup.

Push the steam mode button to set the appliance to the steam function for frothing milk: The blue buttonframe starts blinking, while the machine is heating up. Wait for the blue buttonframe to light up permanently, then the appliance is hot enough to produce steam. The 2 coffee mode buttons will be off and not responding during this.

During the heating-up phase, pour fresh, cold whole milk from the fridge into a tall, narrow milk jug (best made from stainless steel). The milk jug should be about 70 mm tall, +/− 5 mm. Calculate for approx. 100 ml milk per cappuccino and take into account that the volume of cold milk will double once it is steamed.

Once the blue buttonframe of the steam mode button is lit up steadily, lower the steam / hot water outlet with the thermo-insulated rubber grip to position it over the holes in the drip tray.

Now turn the steam / hot water control (I) counterclockwise to the left to the maximum position. Let hot steam shoot from the steam / hot water outlet into the drip tray for approx. 10 seconds to clean out the steam / hot water outlet and remove remaining water.

Turn off the steam / hot water control again (clockwise, until off-position).

Swivel the steam / hot water outlet up, using the heat insulated rubber grip.

Lower the steaming nozzle of the steam / hot water outlet roughly 2 cm into the milk, then turn the control to the left to the maximum position. Steam escapes.

Keep the steaming nozzle directly under the milks surface resp. move the milk jug up and down, slightly turning it, until nice, creamy, steamed milk has formed.

When the milk is steamed enough, turn the control off again. Only then remove the milk jug.

Gently tap the milk jug against a worktop to let potential air bubbles escape. Gently sway the jug to even out the consistency.

Pour the steamed milk directly into the espresso.

Lower the steam / hot water outlet back down over the holes in the drip tray with the heat insulated rubber grip, return the control to the steam position and let some steam escape into the drip tray to flush milk remains out of the steam / hot water outlet. Turn the steam / hot water control off again. Then wipe the steam / hot water outlet clean with a damp cloth. CAUTION: The steam / hot water outlet ist hot!

Press the steam mode button again to turn it off and return the machine into coffee brewing mode. All the blue buttonframes are lit up constantly again. NOTE: The machine will be too hot to brew coffee immediately after using the steam function. This is being indicated by the coffee mode buttons blinking blue after changing back to the brewing function.Wait until the machine has cooled down and the coffee buttons are lighting steadily again, otherwise the coffee will taste slightly burned. The cooldown process can be sped up by letting out some water through the portafilter (with inserted filter, but without ground coffee).119118 GB GB

You can also use the steam / hot water control (I) to prepare hot beverages (e.g. tea) by pouring hot water out the steam / hot water outlet. Proceed as following:

Fill the water tank with fresh water. The MAX marking should not be exceeded.

Plug the main plug into a power outlet.

Press the ON/OFF button to turn on the machine.

As soon as the machine is turned on using this button all the buttonframes light up blue for one second while the machine is pumping water. Afterwards the ON/OFF button and steam mode button stay lit, while the buttonframes of ”automatic mode“ and ”manual mode“ keep blinking as long as the machine is preheating. When the correct temperature is reached these buttons will also constantly light up blue. The machine is now ready for use and you can use the hot water function.

Put a container underneath the steam / hot water outlet.

Turn on the steam / hot water control counterclockwise completely. Hot water pours through the steam / hot water outlet into the container.

To stop the hot water from pouring out turn the steam / hot water control off again. NOTE: The hot water function will stop automatically after 30 seconds. Turn the steam / hot water control off and wait for a short period of time in order to use the function again. CAUTION: Never touch the hot surfaces of the espresso machine especially the one of the steam / hot water outlet during and after the hot water function. You could scald yourself!

After making coffee / cappuccino turn off the machine using the ON/OFF button. All lights turn off.

After that, pull the power plug from the socket.

Return the portafilter handle to the left and carefully pull the portafilter out of the brewing head. CAUTION: Portafilter, filter insert and especially the coffee dregs mixed with hot water are very hot! Be very careful during removal, you could scald yourself!

Turn the portafilter 180 ° degrees and knock the coffee dregs out of the filter insert. Please dispose of the coffee dregs in the household waste and do not pour them down the drain, as this might clog up the wastewater pipes.

Carefully rinse the filter insert and the portafilter under running water. Dry both parts with a paper towel.

Check regularly if the drip tray is full and has to be emptied to avoid overflowing and damaging the base of the machine.

ENERGY SAVING FUNCTION: AUTOMATIC SHUTDOWN

To save energy, the Solis Barista Gran Gusto espresso machine will automatically shut down when it is not used or operated for approx. 15 minutes or longer. To reactivate the appliance, simply press the ON / OFF button.121120 GB GB

Press the steam mode button again to turn it off and return the machine into coffee brewing mode. All the blue buttonframes light up constantly again. Turn off the machine using the ON/OFF button. All lights will turn off.

Pull the power plug from the socket. CAUTION: Never touch the hot surfaces of the espresso machine especially the one of the steam / hot water outlet during and after the steam function. You could scald yourself!

BREWING To change the amount of coffee brewed in automatic mode proceed as fol- lowing:

Prepare everything normally in order to start the brewing process.

Once the machine has reached its operating temperature (all 4 buttons light up blue) press the automatic mode button and keep it pressed until the desired amount of coffee has been brewed. If you let go off the button the new brew time is saved. You can set a brew time between 10 and 60 seconds, 25 seconds being the standard setting. Tip: We recommend a brew time between 25 and 30 seconds.

HEAT WATER OR BEVERAGES USING

You can also use the steam function and the steam / hot water outlet to heat water or beverages (e. g. hot chocolate). Proceed as following:

Fill the water tank with fresh water. The MAX marking should not be exceeded.

The container you are using to heat beverages should ideally be made from stainless steel and around 70 mm tall (+/− 5mm) to avoid steam or hot water splashing outside the container. Fill the container up to 50% with the beverage you intend to heat.

Press the ON/OFF button to turn on the machine.

As soon as the machine is turned on using this button all the buttonframes light up blue for one second while the machine is pumping water. Afterwards the ON/ OFF button and steam mode button stay lit, while the buttonframes of ”automatic mode“ and ”manual mode“ keep blinking as long as the machine is preheating. When the correct temperature is reached these buttons will also constantly light up blue. The machine is now ready for use and you can use the steam function.

Press the steam mode button. The button starts blinking blue and the lights of the 2 coffee buttons will turn off while the machine is preheating for the steam function. The steam function is ready to use as soon as the steam mode button lights up constantly.

Once the blue buttonframe of the steam mode button is lit up steadily, lower the steam / hot water outlet with the thermo-insulated rubber grip to position it over the holes in the drip tray.

Now turn the steam / hot water control counterclockwise to the left to the maxi- mum position. Let hot steam shoot from the steam / hot water outlet into the drip tray for approx. 10 seconds to clean out the steam / hot water outlet and remove remaining water.

Turn off the steam / hot water control again (clockwise, until off-position).

Lower the steam / hot water outlet into the beverage you intend to heat and turn the steam / hot water control counterclockwise into the maximum position.

As soon as your beverage has reached the desired temperature, turn off the steam / hot water control again and remove the container.

Lower the steam / hot water outlet back down over the holes in the drip tray with the heat insulated rubber grip, return the control to the maximum steam position and let some steam escape into the drip tray to flush re- mains out of the steam / hot water outlet. Turn the steam / hot water control off again. Then wipe the steam / hot water outlet clean with a damp cloth. CAUTION: The steam / hot water outlet is hot!123122 GB GB

CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE

7. Screw the nozzle back on the the steam / hot water outlet.

Regularly let hot water run through the brewing group with the portafilter in- serted, but empty (with inserted filter, but without ground coffee). This will flush potential coffee powder remains from the brewing group.

Wash the portafilter and the filter inserts separately and by hand in warm dishwa- ter and rinse everything under running water. Dry well afterwards.

Every 2 months the brewing head should be screwed off the appliance and cleaned under fresh water with a dishscrubber.

We recommend periodically cleaning the brewing head, the portafilter and the filter inserts with SOLITABS to remove coffee grease and other residues (approx. every month, at least after 250 cups). For the exact process, please refer to the instructions included with SOLITABS.

CLEANING THE CASING AND THE CUP TRAY Before the casing is cleaned, the appliance has to switched off and un- plugged. Clean the casing and the cup tray with a soft, slightly moist cloth, then dry it with a dry cloth. In general, do not use any abrasive or aggressive cleaning agents, rough sponges or cloths, as they might scratch the surface.

CLEANING THE DRIP TRAY WITH DRIP GRID Before cleaning the drip tray, the appliance has to be switched off and un- plugged. Remove, empty and clean the drip tray with drip grid regularly and every time it is full. Remove the drip grid and pull the drip tray out to the front. Hand wash the drip tray and the drip grid with warm dishwater. Do not use any aggressive cleaning agents or scouring sponges. Rinse the tray and the grid with clear water and carefully dry both parts. CAUTION: Drip tray and drip grid are not dishwasher safe. Reinsert the drip tray and place the grid back on the drip tray.

Store the cooled down, cleaned and dry machine in an upright position, ideally in the original packaging. Do not place any items on the appliance.125124 GB GB

DESCALING Prolonged use or hard water can cause after a short period of time limestone depos- its to form in and on many functioning parts of your machine and reduce operating performance – which, in turn, reduces the quality of the espresso. This is why Solis recommends regularly (depending on water hardness but at least once a month) descaling your Barista Gran Gusto espresso machine with a mixture of SOLIPOL

special and water. Please use only SOLIPOL

special (Art.-No. 703.02) for descaling the machine. Damages caused by the use of improper descaling agent are not covered by warranty. Proceed as follows:

1. Insert the portafilter (without ground coffee) into the brewing head. Pour a

special and water in a ratio of 1:1 into the water tank and fill it to the MAX marking.

2. Connect the power plug to the socket.

3. Press the ON/OFF button and wait until all buttonframes steadily light up blue

and the machine has reached its operating temperature.

4. Place a large empty container underneath the brewing head or the portafilter

respectively and an empty milk jug underneath the steam / hot water outlet.
