DECALCIFICAZIONE DEL BOLLITORE

Please read through this user manual thoroughly before using your Solis "Vario Temp Kettle" water boiler so that you become familiar with your appliance and can use it safely. We thoroughly recommend that you keep these instructions and, if you pass the appliance on, that you also hand these instructions to the new owner.

For your own safety, please observe the following safety measures when using electrical appliances:

  1. To avoid electric shock, neither the appliance base nor the power cord and plug resp. the electrical contacts in the bottom of the kettle and on the appliance base must come into contact with water or any other liquids. Water can enter the housing and damage the appliance! Risk of electric shock! Should the appliance base resp. the power cord or plug resp. the electrical contacts in the bottom of the kettle and on the appliance base come into contact with liquids, use dry rubber gloves to immediately pull the power plug from the power socket. Do not use the appliance before having it checked for functionality and safety by Solis or a Solis approved service centre.
  2. The kettle itself must not be submerged in water or other liquids and has to be completely dry on the outside and bottom when being placed on the appliance base.
  3. Do not operate the appliance resp. pull or connect the plug with wet or moist hands or feet.
  4. Before using the appliance, check that the voltage stated on the type plate of your appliance matches your mains voltage.
  5. Place the appliance while in function on a heat and moisture resistant, level, stable, clean and dry surface, like a table or work top. A minimum distance of 20~cm to walls, curtains or heat resp. steam sensitive or flammable objects has to be kept at all times. We recommend not using the appliance under heat and moisture sensitive furniture resp. hanging cupboards.

The room should be well ventilated to allow the steam to escape quickly.

  1. Never use the water boiler near the edge of a table. Make sure it is kept out of the reach of children and pets to prevent it from being pulled down and damaged with the escaping boiling water causing scaldings.
  2. Do not leave the power cable hanging over table edges so that it can be pulled. Make sure that neither the power cord nor the plug does not come into contact with hot surfaces, such as hotplates or a radiator, or that it comes into contact with the appliance. Fully unwind the cord before use.
  3. Keep the appliance away from hot gas, hot ovens and other heat-emitting appliances or heat sources. Do not use the appliance near flammable or explosive liquids or gases. Never use the appliance on a hot or wet surface. Never place the appliance near moisture, heat and naked flames. Keep the appliance away from moving parts or appliances.
  4. Never carry the appliance by the power cord and do not place anything on the power cord. Never pull on the power cord to disconnect the appliance from the power mains. Only pull on the plug.
  5. We recommend that you do not use an extension cable with this appliance. Do not connect the power plug to a plug board to which other appliances are connected. Do not place the appliance directly underneath a power socket.
  6. Unplug the appliance when it is not in use or unattended and before cleaning. We recommend the use of a residual current device (RCD safety switch) to ensure additional protection during the use of electrical appliances. It is advisable to use a safety switch with a rated residual operating current of 30 mA maximum. For professional advice consult an electrician.
  7. Do not make any adjustments to the appliance, cable, plug or accessories.

  8. Caution: The surfaces of the appliance, the kettle (incl. the surface of the heating element in the kettle bottom), the lid as well as the water in the kettle will become very hot during boiling and stay very hot even some time after switching off. Be careful not to burn yourself!

  9. In order to avoid electric shock, never submerge or bring the kettle bottom, the appliance base, the power cord or the power plug into contact with water or other liquids. Never rinse the outside of the kettle with running water.
  10. Never reach for an appliance that has fallen into water or other liquids. Always use dry rubber gloves to pull the plug before taking it out. Do not start using it again before having it checked for functionality and safety by Solis or a service centre authorized by Solis.
  11. Never place the appliance in such a way that it might fall into water or come into contact with water (e.g. in or next to a sink)
  12. Place the appliance so that it is never exposed to direct sunlight.
  13. Do not leave the water boiler unattended when in use. Incorrect use may cause injury!
  14. Never put sharp or pointed objects and tools into the appliance openings. The appliance may become damaged – danger of electric shock!
  15. Do not shake or relocate the appliance while it is in operation.
  16. Check if the kettle is correctly positioned on the base before starting to use the appliance.
  17. Exclusively use the Solis water boiler to heat water or keep water warm. It is not suitable to boil other liquids (e.g. milk, hot chocolate, coffee).
  18. Only fill the kettle with water through the lid opening, not through the spout. For filling water, always lift the appliance off the appliance base.

  19. Only switch the appliance on when there is enough water in the kettle (note 0,5 litres MIN marking!), otherwise the appliance might be damaged.

  20. Should there be too little water in the kettle or should the water have evaporated, thereby triggering the overheat protection, pull the plug and let the appliance cool down for at least 10 minutes, before refilling cold water into the kettle. Caution: Never fill the appliance with cold water to cool it down, always wait for the kettle to cool down by itself.
  21. Use the appliance only as described in this manual. Never switch the appliance on with an empty kettle. Improper use can cause personal injury. Only fill the kettle with cold water and make sure never to exceed the MAX marking resp. fall under the MIN marking.
  22. A maximum of 1,7 litres of water can be filled into the kettle. If more water is poured in, the boiling water could splash resp. splutter out of the kettle and cause scaldings resp. damage to the appliance. Should hot water splash out of the kettle during boiling, switch the appliance off immediately with the ON/OFF button (press and hold button for 2 seconds) and pull the plug. The appliance base and the outside of the kettle with the electrical contacts have to be completely dry before, during and after the boiling process.
  23. Only use with the provided accessories, or accessories recommended by Solis, incorrect accessories can lead to damage of the appliance.
  24. This appliance is only for domestic use and is not suitable for commercial use. Do not use in moving vehicles or boats.
  25. Do not use the appliance outdoors. The appliance must not come into contact with rain. Do not store the appliance outdoors or in rooms with high humidity.
  26. Check your water boiler before every use to make sure that the appliance itself, the power cord and the power plug are without damage and no parts have come loose.

  27. To prevent electric shock, do not use the appliance if cord or power plug are damaged or if the appliance has other faults, has fallen down resp. is damaged in any other way or if parts have come loose. Never attempt repairs yourself but take the appliance to Solis or a service centre authorized by Solis in order to get it inspected, repaired or mechanically and electrically maintained, in order to avoid a hazard.

  28. People with limited physical, sensorial or mental capabilities as well as unknowing or inexperienced people (incl. children) must not use the water boiler except when supervised or thoroughly instructed on how to use the appliance by a person responsible for their safety. Additionally, they must be aware of the dangers arising from the appliance and know how to operate it safely. Cleaning and maintenance of the appliance must not be done by unsupervised children. The appliance must not be operated or cleaned by children under the age of 8.
  29. Always keep the appliance and power cord out of the reach of children.
  30. Children must not clean the appliance except when supervised by a grown-up person responsible for their safety.
  31. Children must not be allowed to play with the water boiler. Keep the packaging material incl. plastic bags out of reach of children. Suffocation hazard!
  32. Keep the appliance away from children during use – the water in the kettle is hot! As the kettle itself will become warm, you may only touch it by the handle to lift it.
  33. Do not disconnect resp. lift the kettle from the appliance base during boiling. If you lift the kettle nonetheless, the appliance switches back to the standby-mode and the temperature 100 °C button is blinking and has to be reset resp. restarted.
  34. Never pull the power plug while water is being heated. Always switch the appliance off with the ON/OFF button before (press and hold button for 2 seconds).

  35. Avoid contact with the hot steam that escapes from appliance openings during and even after boiling. Always pour hot water out of the spout carefully and slowly to prevent it from splashing and scalding somebody.

  36. Always keep the lid closed during boiling. You should never hold your face resp. other body parts directly above the spout of the kettle, because hot steam can escape.
  37. Hot water must only be poured out through the spout. The lid has to remain closed for this.
  38. Be especially careful when lifting or carrying the kettle filled with hot water.
  39. The appliance resp. the kettle has to be cooled down before you fill it with fresh, cold water. Only fill the cooled down kettle with cold water. Always let the appliance cool down between two heating phases.
  40. Never start the appliance using a remote or timer.
  41. Use the boiler base of the appliance exclusively with the accompanying kettle and never use the kettle with a different water boiler base. Never misappropriate the base of the water boiler. Never put the kettle on a hotplate. Wrong accessories can lead to electric shock, fire or personal injury as well as damage the appliance.
  42. The lid has to be closed during heating and keeping-warm. Do not place anything on the lid. Never cover the appliance during use, the space above the appliance has to remain unobstructed at all times.
  43. Before moving or cleaning the appliance, always switch it off with the ON/OFF button (press and hold button for 2 seconds). Then, pull the power plug from the socket and wait for the appliance to cool down completely. Please pull the plug if the appliance is not in use.
  44. Pull the plug after every use. Only then the appliance is definitely switched off.

  45. Keep the appliance clean. Always switch the appliance off, pull the power plug and let the appliance cool down completely before cleaning and storing it. Please refer to the "Cleaning and care" section on page 80 of this manual.

  46. Only use mild detergent and a soft towel for cleaning. Aggressive detergents and solvents or abrasive materials could damage the surface.
  47. Prior to first use remove all packaging materials and labels resp. tags (except for the type plate) and clean the kettle and lid from the inside and outside. Follow the chapter "Before first use" on page 74 of this manual.
  48. This product has not been calibrated for industrial or scientific use. The temperatures may vary, but they will always be in the optimal range in order to cook water for all types of tea and coffee.

▲ BEFORE FIRST USE

The kettle has to be cleaned prior to its first use. Proceed as following:

  1. Place the unit base on a heat- and waterproof, clean, dry, solid and even work-top close to a power outlet and out of the reach of children. Unroll the power cord of the unit base completely and place it in a way that the appliance can not be dragged down by the cord.
  2. Take the kettle off the base and press the lid release button to open the lid.
  3. Wipe the kettle's and lid's interior and exterior clean with a soft, damp cloth and dry everything off.
  4. Fill the kettle with cold tap water up to the MAX marking on the water display.

Caution: The MAX marking in the kettle must never be exceeded, otherwise boiling water might splash out! The maximum capacity is 1,7 litres. Likewise, the MIN marking (0,5 litres) must never be undercut, otherwise the overheating protection is triggered and the appliance automatically switches off.

  1. Close the lid again by pressing it down until it snaps in. Caution: the lid must always be closed during boiling.
  2. If necessary, dry the outside of the kettle as well as the kettle bottom. Place the kettle on the dry appliance base.
  3. Connect the power plug to a suitable power outlet, the power cord has to be completely unwound.
  4. All control buttons light up briefly and then a two-time signal tone sounds while all control buttons turn off, except for the temperature 100 °C button, which is blinking blue, and the ON/OFF button which is lighting green. The blue blinking temperature button and the green lighting ON/OFF button indicate that the appliance is in standby mode.
  5. Initially press the temperature 100°C button and then the ON/OFF button to heat up the water to 100°C (or press solely the ON/OFF button to do a quick start). During boiling the temperature 100°C button lights up constantly blue and the ON/OFF button lights red.
  6. Wait until the water is boiling. At the end of the boiling process you will hear a two-time signal tone and the control light of the ON/OFF button will light green. The appliance will turn off automatically.
  7. Pour the water carefully out the spout while keeping the lid closed.
  8. Let the appliance cool down and then fill it again with cold tap water. To do this open the lid and take the kettle off the unit base.
  9. Afterwards put the filled kettle (with dry exterior) back onto the base and close the lid.
  10. Repeat the boiling process a second time and pour out the water again.
  11. Your appliance is now ready to use.

▲ OPERATION

  1. Place the appliance on a heat- and waterproof, clean, dry, stable and even work surface out of the reach of children, near a power outlet. Unwind the power cord from the appliance base completely and place it in such a way that the appliance can not be yanked down by it.
  2. Take the kettle off the appliance base, push the lid release button and the lid opens.
  3. Fill the kettle with cold tap water (follow the MIN and MAX markings on the kettle, fill in at most 1,7 litres) and close the lid by pushing it down until it snaps in. Caution: The lid has to be closed at all times during cooking.
  4. If necessary, dry the outside and bottom of the kettle. Place the kettle on the dry appliance base.
  5. Connect the power plug to a suitable power outlet, the power cord has to be unrolled completely.
  6. All control buttons light up briefly and then you will hear a two-time signal tone and all buttons turn off, except for the temperature 100 °C button, which is blinking blue, and the ON/OFF button, which lights green. The blue blinking temperature button and the constantly green lighting ON/OFF button indicate that the appliance is in standby mode. Press one of the temperature buttons according to the water temperature you need. The pressed button is blinking blue. Afterwards press the ON/OFF button, which turns red, while the temperature button is now lighting steadily blue. The boiling process has started now.
  7. The appliance will turn off automatically as soon as the water is boiling or the wanted temperature is reached respectively. The end of the boiling process is indicated by a two-time signal tone and the constant green light of the ON/OFF button.
  8. Carefully remove the kettle from the appliance base and slowly pour the hot water into a prepared kettle, using the spout. For safety reasons, we recommend always pouring boiling water through the spout without opening the lid.
Caution: Always be careful not to burn or scald yourself with the hot steam coming out of the spout!
  9. If you do not need any more hot water, pull the power plug, pour the remaining water out of the kettle and let the appliance cool down (this prevents fast calcification).

■ QUICK START FUNCTION:

- If you solely press the ON/OFF button after plugging in the power plug, the appliance will simply heat up the water to 100 °C and then turn off automatically. The ON/OFF button also functions as the quick start button for 100 °C.

Notes:

  • You can change the wanted temperature anytime during the boiling process or the keeping-warm phase by pressing a different temperature button.
  • You can start or stop the boiling process anytime by pressing the ON/OFF button. To fully shut down the appliance you have to press the ON/OFF button for 2 seconds until all control lights go out.
  • If you solely press the KEEP WARM button after plugging in the power plug and then press the ON/OFF button, the water will heat up to 90 °C and then be kept warm.
  • Do not tilt the filled kettle too strongly, especially not backwards, in the direction of the handle. Never turn the appliance upside down, not even when the lid is closed. Water might escape even when the lid is closed!
  • Always make sure that the lid is closed and locked before switching the appliance on.
  • The kettle bottom covering the heating element is made from high-quality stainless steel. White residues potentially forming there are limestone deposits that should be removed as described in the section „Descaling the kettle“ on page 81.

Please note that:

  • Standby mode means returning to the 100 °C function if you take the kettle off the base after or during a boiling process. In keep warm mode the kettle and base have to be separated for at least 1 minute. The ON/OFF button constantly lights green and the temperature 100 °C button is blinking blue during standby mode.
  • Energy saving mode implies that the appliance is connected to a power supply but no button has been pressed for more than 30 minutes (as long as the KEEP WARM function is not activated). As soon as the appliance enters the energy saving mode you will hear a two-time signal tone and all control lights will go out. The appliance will also enter energy saving mode at the end of the KEEP WARM function (i.e. after 2 hours).
  • You can return the appliance from energy saving mode to standby mode by briefly pressing a button or lifting the kettle and putting it back down.

■ ACTIVATING THE KEEP WARM FUNCTION

  • With use of the KEEP WARM button you can keep water temperatures of 70 °C / 80 °C / 90 °C constant for up to 2 hours. The appliance will always heat up again should the temperature drop.
    • You can adjust the KEEP WARM function as following:

Option 1: Activate the KEEP WARM function while selecting temperature

If you pressed one of the temperature buttons (70 °C / 80 °C / 90 °C), you can press the KEEP WARM button afterwards followed by the ON/OFF button, to start the boiling process. After the wanted temperature is reached, the appliance will automatically enter the KEEP WARM function. The temperature button lights blue, the KEEP WARM button also lights blue and the ON/OFF button lights red.

Option 2: Activate the KEEP WARM function after heating up

After the boiling process is finished, you can press the KEEP WARM button and then the ON/OFF button again and the appliance will enter the KEEP WARM function. The temperature button lights blue, the KEEP WARM button also lights blue and the ON/OFF button lights red.

  • Caution: If you press the KEEP WARM button and then the ON/OFF button without selecting a temperature beforehand, the water will automatically heat up to 90 °C and then be kept warm.
  • The KEEP WARM function can not be activated if you pressed the 100 °C temperature button.

TURN OFF THE KEEP WARM FUNCTION

  • After 2 hours the KEEP WARM function will turn off automatically and the appliance will enter the energy saving mode.
  • If you want to turn off the KEEP WARM function before that time, just keep the ON/OFF button pressed for 2 seconds. All control lights turn off and the appliance will be in energy saving mode until you unplug the main power plug.
  • If you separate the kettle from the unit's base for 1 minute or longer the KEEP WARM function will turn off as well and the appliance switches into standby mode.
  • We generally recommend to unplug the power plug, if the appliance is not being used.

OVERHEAT PROTECTION

- Should the appliance overheat, e.g. if there is no or too little water in the kettle or if it has already evaporated, the appliance automatically switches off. In this case, pull the plug and let the appliance cool down completely for at least 10 minutes before using it again.

▲ GOOD TO KNOW

  • Never exceed the MAX marking when filling the kettle as this might cause the water to splash out of the kettle during boiling and cause scalding resp. electric shock!
    • Filled to the MAX marking, the kettle holds 1,7 litres of water.
  • Never fill the kettle with too little water. The lowest marking (0,5 litres) has to be reached every time, otherwise the overheat protection is triggered and the appliance switches off.
  • Always check if the lid is correctly closed and locked before plugging the power plug into the power outlet.
  • Dry the kettle outside as well as the kettle bottom and the appliance base before plugging in the plug.
  • During heating, you can stop the heating process at any time by pressing the ON/OFF button.
  • Should there be too little water in the kettle or should the water have evaporated, triggering the overheat protection, pull the power plug and let the appliance cool down completely for at least 10 minutes before refilling the kettle with cold water.
  • Do not press the lid release button during or shortly after boiling to open the lid, as hot water might splash out of the kettle. If you want to open the lid, e.g. to refill cold water, the hot water remaining in the kettle should be poured out through the spout first, with the lid closed.
  • Because steam has to be allowed to escape from the kettle during boiling, the spout is always open. Therefore, water might escape when the full kettle is tipped over or placed on its side. Consequently, the kettle filled with water has to be in an upright position at all times.

▲ CLEANING AND CARE

• Before cleaning, pull the plug and let the electric kettle cool down completely.
- Never submerge the kettle or the appliance base resp. the power cord and the power plug in water or any other liquids and do not spray water or any other liquids onto the appliance parts. Risk of electric shock! Put neither the unit's base nor the kettle into a dishwasher.
- Clean the outside of the kettle, the lid on both the inside and the outside and the appliance base with a just slightly moist cloth and dry the inside of the kettle. Do not use any aggressive cleaning agents or solvents and no scratching materials to clean the appliance, this might damage the surfaces.

Tip: Light limestone deposits can be often removed by simply wiping the inside of the kettle.

■ REMOVING AND CLEANING THE LIMESTONE FILTER

  • The limestone filter, which is positioned directly behind the spout in the kettle, has to be removed and cleaned regularly.
    • Always wait for the appliance to cool down completely and check if the power plug is pulled.
  • To take out the filter press down the filter nose at the upper rim of the kettle above the spout.

• To clean the filter of lime residue, scrub the filter under running, warm water with a cloth or a soft dish scrubber.

- Afterwards put the limestone filter back into the interior of the kettle. The bottom of the filter fits exactly into the bottom rail below the spout and the top of the filter should snap in below the rim of the kettle.

- Note: The limestone filter is a consumable item and might be worn out after prolonged use. You can get a replacement from good specialist stores or from Solis. You can find the contact addresses at the end of the manual.

DESCALING THE KETTLE

  • After prolonged use or through hard water, lime deposits can form in the kettle and reduce operating performance and impair the water taste.
  • Solis recommends to decalcify the kettle regularly (depending on the hardness of the water but at least once a month) using a mixture of a suitable lime dissolver and water. Follow the instruction manual of the lime dissolver. The lime dissolver or the lime dissolver solution (lime dissolver mixed with water) must not be boiled under any circumstances.
    • The maximum amount of lime dissolver solution must not exceed 1,7 litres.
    • Make sure to put the water kettle on a impervious resp. safe surface.
  • After the lime dissolution process slowly pour the descaling solution out through the spout to descale that area as well. Remove possibly remaining limestone deposits on the spout or limestone filter with a towel soaked in the descaling solution.
  • After emptying out the descaling solution, you have to fill the kettle with fresh, cold tap water to the MAX marking, bring it to the boil (100 °C) and pour the water out again each time to remove all remains of the descaling solution. Do this three times and under all circumstances.

▲ STORAGE

  • When not needed, the water kettle should be disconnected from the power, be allowed to cool down completely and then dried.
  • Store the cool, clean and dry appliance in an upright position, best in the original packaging. Do not place any objects on the appliance.
