Frequently Asked Questions - R 1200 GS Adventure (2017) BMW

How to start the BMW R 1200 GS Adventure 2017?
Ensure the side stand is up and the gearbox is in neutral. Turn the ignition key, wait for all the control lights to go out, then press the electric start button located on the right handlebar. In cold weather, starting may require a few extra seconds of preheating.
What is the fuel tank capacity and how to manage the reserve?
The aluminum tank holds 30 liters, including 4 liters of reserve. When the reserve light comes on, you still have about 4 liters left. Refuel promptly, especially when off-road where stations can be spaced out. The cap is located under the front panel of the tank.
How to adjust the seat height?
The seat is adjustable in two positions: 890 mm (low position) and 910 mm (high position). To change position, unlock and remove the seat, reposition or reverse the adjustment block under the seat, then replace it. The operation does not require any tools.
What riding modes are available and how to activate them?
As standard, the bike offers Rain and Road modes, accessible via the left switchgear. Dynamic, Enduro, and Enduro Pro modes are available if your bike is equipped with the Pro Riding Modes option. Each mode changes the throttle response, ASC traction control, and, if installed, the ESA suspension.
How to adjust the ESA (Electronic Suspension Adjustment) suspension?
If your bike is equipped with the ESA option, the suspension stiffness is adjustable from the dashboard without tools, either at a stop or while riding. Select the profile suited to your load:
  • Comfort: solo rider on road
  • Normal: mixed use or light luggage
  • Sport: dynamic riding
In Enduro mode, the suspension is automatically softened.
What to do if the ABS or ASC light comes on while riding?
An ABS or ASC light that comes on outside of startup indicates a system fault. Safely come to a stop, turn off the ignition, and restart. If the light remains on, the bike is still usable but without the concerned electronic assistance. Have the fault code read by a BMW Motorrad dealer or with a compatible diagnostic tool (such as GS-911).
What is the service interval and which engine oil should be used?
BMW recommends servicing every 10,000 km or once a year, whichever comes first. Use a synthetic 4-stroke engine oil 15W-50 that meets BMW Longlife-01 standards, or a 10W-50 oil in extreme conditions. Check the level via the transparent gauge on the right side of the engine, with the engine warm and the bike upright.
How to prepare the BMW R 1200 GS Adventure for winter storage?
Fill the tank to avoid condensation. Disconnect the battery starting with the negative terminal (-), then the positive terminal (+), and keep it on a maintenance charger (such as CTEK). Cover the bike and store it in a dry, ventilated place. Upon return, check the tire pressure (120/70-R19 front, 170/60-R17 rear) and fluid levels before any ride.
How to check and adjust tire pressure?
Check the pressure cold, before any trip. The dimensions are 120/70-R19 at the front and 170/60-R17 at the rear. The recommended values according to the load are listed on the sticker on the frame and in the owner's manual. Incorrect pressure degrades road handling and accelerates tire wear.
Is it necessary to grease the final drive (shaft)?
No, the shaft drive does not require external greasing. However, check the oil level in the shaft housing and gearbox at each service (every 10,000 km). Use the recommended BMW Motorrad gear oil. This system is one of the GS Adventure's assets for long journeys, as it is free from routine maintenance.

How to turn on the fog lights on a BMW R 1200 GS Adventure (2017)?
Frequently Asked Questions - 09/03/2026
Response Notice-Facile

On your BMW R 1200 GS Adventure (2017), the fog lights are referred to as additional LED headlights. To turn them on, you must first start the engine and activate the low beam headlights (a prerequisite - the additional headlights only work if the low beam is active). Then, press the button 1 located on the left handlebar control (above the headlight control block). A warning light for the additional headlights will illuminate on the dashboard to confirm their activation.

Be aware that these additional headlights are approved as fog lights and should only be used when weather conditions are poor. Follow the traffic regulations in your country, which precisely define when it is legal to use fog lights. In particular, do not leave them on at all times or in low light without fog.

To turn off the additional headlights, press the same button 1 again. The warning light will turn off, confirming the shutdown of these headlights. They will also automatically turn off when the ignition is switched off, after a short moment.
