How IPL works IPL or Intense Pulsed Light is a well-tested and well-proven method for safely and permanently reducing hair regrowth. It works by emitting high energy pulses of light to the treatment area. The light energy is readily absorbed by pigments in the hair shaft and is directed down the hair shaft to the root where it causes the hair follicle to become unproductive. As a consequence the hair naturally sheds over the next few weeks and no further regrowth occurs from that follicle. For IPL to be eective the hair must be in its growth phase at the time of treatment. Since the hair’s lifecycle has 3 phases and not all hairs are in growth phase at the same time, several treatments are necessary over a number of weeks to eectively treat the whole area. Duo Salon has been clinically proven to permanently prevent regrowth of of hair in just 4 treatments, spaced 2 weeks apart. Exact results will vary from person to person, so some individuals may need a few further treatments to get the best results. After the first 4 to 6 treatments, most users opt to use occasional top up treatments for any hairs that start to come into their growth phase later on. Note: Duo Salon uses a UV filter to carefully control the wavelength of light applied to the skin for both safety and optimum ecacy. The treatment is completely UV free. What are AFT FreeGlide and Single Pulse treatments? Duo Salon has two dierent modes of operation: AFT and Single Pulse. AFT (or Advanced Fluorescence Technology) is available on power levels 1 & 2 and allows larger areas to be treated faster. In AFT FreeGlide mode, the pulse rate is faster allowing the unit to be moved smoothly across the skin surface with a continuous pulse action. The fastest pulse is on level 1. On level 2 the pulse is slower, so you will need to move over the skin slower accordingly, but the energy delivered by each pulse is greater. In AFT mode we advise moving the treatment window back and forth over the same area up to 5 times to ensure good coverage. Skin Colour
The higher power levels 3, 4 and 5 operate in Single Pulse mode, where each individual area is treated with a single pulse before moving the treatment head onto the next area. Whilst each treatment may take a little longer to carry out in Single Pulse Mode, the higher energy settings provide a very eective result, so less repeat treatments may be required. Choosing the right treatment mode and power level for you is very important and will depend on your skin colour and sensitivity. Carrying out a patch test will help establish this safely. We cannot recommend any treatments be carried out before a patch test has been done and 48 hours have passed before the test area is assessed. What is Active Cooling? Duo Salon’s Active Cooling feature uses the same Peltier Cell technology as professional salon devices. The crystal glass treatment window is actively cooled for a safer, more comfortable treatment at higher power levels. The Active Cooling feature comes on automatically when Duo Salon is switched on, and is indicated by the snow flake icon glowing blue. It is automatically controlled for optimum cooling on each power level. Suitable hair/skin colour Duo Salon is suitable for skin types I to V and for dark blond through to black hair. Note: Very light colour hair will not have sucient pigment to direct the IPL energy to the root of the hair and treatment will not be eective. Very dark skin (type VI) should not be treated as too much heat is retained by the pigment in the skin, making adverse reactions & potential skin damage much more likely. What to expect during treatment Most people experience a temporary warmth or slight stinging sensation during treatment, which can be likened to an elastic band being snapped on the skin. This sensation is normal and a sign that the treatment is eective. It usually fades within an hour of the treatment finishing. There may also be a smell of singed hair. This is also normal and a sign that treatment is eective. Anything beyond minor discomfort is not normal and you should stop treatment and reassess suitability according to the advice in this user manual. What to Expect After Treatment Most people will experience some reddening of the skin which will usually fade within 24 hours. See ‘Aftercare’ section below for advice on soothing the skin during this period. If reddening hasn’t subsided after 3-4 days then it is recommended to consult a medical professional.DUO SALON | 9
The hairs that have been successfully treated will start to shed naturally over the course of the next 1-2 weeks. Depending on the number of treatments you have had, you are likely to also notice some patches of hair still growing. These are hairs that were not in their growth phase during early treatments. These hairs will be targeted by subsequent treatments once they have entered their growth phase. Note: It is fine to continue shaving between IPL treatments. This will not impede treatment or make it less eective. Tanning Caution Exposure of your skin to UV light for longer than 15 mins (whether that’s from the sun or a sunbed), raises melanin levels and increases the sensitivity of your skin. This, in turn, eects how well the skin can tolerate IPL treatments. To avoid unwanted side eects, including burns and skin damage, always follow this important advice:
- NEVER use Duo Salon on areas of skin that are red or sunburned
- After tanning (ie. more than 15 mins UV exposure), wait at least 4 weeks before your next IPL treatment and then perform a new patch test to determine the appropriate power setting.
- For at least 2 weeks after an IPL treatment, either avoid UV exposure completely or limit exposure and protect the treated areas with a high factor sunscreen (SPF 30+).
- After using fake tan products wait at least two weeks until the tan has completely faded before an IPL treatment. Preparing the area to be treated Before using Duo Salon, hair should be removed from the treatment area by shaving or by trimming to within 1mm of the skin surface. This ensures light energy is directed down the hair shaft to the follicle below the skin surface for an eective treatment. If hair is not shaved or close-trimmed, the hair above the skin surface may be burnt by the treatment and less energy will travel to the follicle. Avoid the use of depilatory creams & bleaches for at least 2 weeks prior to treatment as the chemicals may increase the chance of adverse skin reactions. Do not wax, tweeze or epilate prior to treatment as this will mean there is no hair present below the skin surface to direct the light energy to the follicle. Remove any jewellery, including body jewellery, in the area to be treated. Having shaved the treatment area, carefully wash and dry the skin, ensuring it is free from any powders, lotions, creams, deodorants etc.
WARNING: Never use flammable liquids such as alcohol or acetone to clean the skin
Instructions for use Setting Up Duo Salon
1. Remove all components from the box.
2. Completely unwind the cord between the treatment head and base unit, ready for use.
3. Check there is no damage to the crystal glass treatment window. if there is damage,
4. Plug the power cord into the back of the Duo Salon base.
5. After connecting the power cord to the Duo Salon base, insert the plug into a mains
6. Switch the power switch at the rear of the base unit to the ‘on’ position (I).
7. The blue/white skin level indicator lights will flash on and turn o, the green status light
on the treatment head will begin flashing.
8. Press the power button on the front of the Duo Salon to cycle through the power
levels. The snowflake icon will light in blue showing that the active cooling is on and working. Patch test (spot test) The patch test is used to determine your skins reaction to the Duo Salon treatment and to help you select the optimal energy level for each treatment area. Carry out a patch test on each area you intend to treat, at least 48 hours prior to the full treatment.
1. Prepare the patch test area by shaving, washing and drying as described above.
2. Set up Duo Salon following the instructions above and check that it is set to the lowest
power setting - level 1.
3. Place the crystal glass treatment window on the chosen test area making full contact
4. Deliver the first pulse on power level 1, by pressing the pulse button. You will see
a bright flash, hear a popping noise and you may feel a mild stinging or/and heat sensation. Release the pulse button immediately to avoid delivering multiple pulses to the same patch of skin.
5. Move the applicator along to cover the next adjacent area of skin in the test area.
6. Press the power button to increase the power level by one. Again, deliver a single
pulse by pressing the pulse button.
7. Only if you feel comfortable repeat steps 5 to 6, increasing one level at a time until you
have reached the maximum power Level (see suitable skin/hair colour table for max suggested levels). Stop the test if you do not feel comfortable. Always stop treating immediately if you experience any adverse eects such as severe redness, swelling or blistering. The higher the power level, the greater the chance of an adverse reaction.
8. Wait 48 hours and examine the tested area. If the skin in the test area seems normal
(no response or mild redness) you can proceed with a full treatment in the highest comfortable energy level you tested. If you see extreme redness, swelling or blistering, even in the low energy level settings do not do the full treatment in that area.
WARNING: Always test an area before full treatment. Do not treat the tested area for
at least 48 hours after the patch test is done. Use the table below to make a note of the energy level that suits you for dierent areas you wish to treat.DUO SALON | 11
Body treatments Duo Salon can be used to treat most areas of the body, but intimate areas (eg genitals, nipples, anus) must be avoided. Please refer to Facial Treatments section for specific advice on treating the face. Before first treatment of a new area, always carry out a Patch Test to assess suitability and to determine the best power level for your skin. Wait 48hours to assess the Patch Test area and then do not retreat the same area within 7 days of the patch test. Prepare the treatment area by shaving then washing and drying thoroughly. (See Preparing the Area to be Treated) Set up Duo Salon for use (see Setting up DUO SALON) ensuring the switch on the base unit is set to position I. Press the power button to turn on the device. Wait for the blue LED indicator for level 1 to illuminate. Press the power button as required to set the power level determined by your patch test. The green status light on the applicator head will flash rapidly. In AFT FreeGlide mode (levels 1 & 2) Place the crystal glass treatment window on the area to be treated, making full contact with the skin. The status light should stop flashing and show a steady green light, to indicate skin contact is made. Hold the pulse button down and immediately start to move the window slowly across the skin, maintaining constant contact. A flash will be emitted at regular intervals all the time that you hold the button down and keep contact with the skin. You will also hear a popping sound with each flash. Keep the treatment head moving, passing over the treatment area up to 5 times to ensure maximum coverage. NOTE: The rate of movement across the skin can be adjusted in line with the flash rate for a more even coverage, i.e. by moving faster on level 1 and slower on level 2. In Single Shot mode (levels 3, 4 & 5) Place the crystal glass treatment window on the area to be treated, making full contact with the skin. The status light should stop flashing and show a steady green light, to indicate skin contact is made. Press the pulse button once. A single flash will be emitted and you will hear a popping sound. Move the treatment head to the next patch of skin taking care not to overlap. Wait for the status light to be steady green, then press the pulse button again. Body Area Comfortable Energy Level12 | DUO SALON
Aim to cover the whole treatment area with minimum overlap – i.e. only treating each patch of skin once. Flashing the same area twice does not improve the eectiveness of the treatment, but increases the chance of skin reactions. Tip: If at any time during a treatment your skin starts to feel overly warm, simply pause the treatment for a few seconds to allow the crystal glass window to fully re-chill before continuing. Note: When the status light is flashing slowly, this indicates the flash unit is in recharging. Wait for a steady light before pressing the pulse button. On higher power levels, the recharge time between pulses will be longer. After use, switch the power switch on the rear of the base unit to the ‘o’ position (0). Switch o at the mains and unplug before storing away. Warning Please only use level 5 if you have completed a patch test with no adverse eects. This is a high powered professional salon device and level 5 will not be suitable for everyone. This level increases your chances of adverse eects. Reddening of the skin (erythema) is normal and should subside after 48 hours. Please follow the aftercare advice provided. If the reddening does not subside after 3 days, consult a medical professional. Facial Treatments Always use the Duo Salon facial adapter when treating the face. It is designed to make the treatment of smaller areas easier & safer. The face is a sensitive area that requires special care and caution, so please follow all instructions and safety precautions carefully in order to avoid adverse eects. Before treating the face, always carry out a Patch Test to assess suitability and to determine the best power level for your skin. Wait 48 hours to assess the Patch Test area and then do not retreat the same area within 7 days. For convenience, the Patch Test can be carried out on a hair-free area such as below the ear or the side of the neck. Warnings
- NEVER use the device on the face above the cheek line, around the eyes, eyebrows or eyelashes
- NEVER attempt to use the device to treat hair growth in the nose or ears
- NEVER use the device over the lips. If necessary, lips can be folded inwards and pressed together or they can be masked with a sheet of white paper Before treatment, place the precision facial adaptor over the treatment window. It is held in place magnetically. Use a mirror for guidance to ensure correct positioning of the facial adapter window over the treatment area. Proceed as for Body Treatments. As the treatment area is smaller, it can be more convenient to use single shots even on levels 1 and 2. This is done by pressing the pulse button and releasing it as soon as the unit has flashed. Reposition the window over the next area of skin before repeating. Place the Facial adapter window as indicated in the picture. Please Note: Facial hair growth may be hormone related and, as such, can take more sessions to achieve permanent hair reduction. Men are advised not to treat facial hair. Tip: If the intensity of the flash bothers you during use, try to ensure your room is brightly lit to reduce the contrast. We also recommend either closing the eyes prior to each flash or use the goggles provided.DUO SALON | 13
Recommended treatment schedule Initial recommended treatment should consist of 4 to 6 treatments, spaced 2 weeks apart. Thereafter, occasional touch up treatments can be made as required (also spaced at least 2 weeks apart). Spacing treatments any closer than this will not improve the results but may increase the risk of adverse side eects. Aftercare If there is any redness or irritation immediately after treatment, the area should be soothed by applying an ice pack wrapped in a clean towel for up to 15 mins, repeating every 1-2 hours as required. An aloe vera gel or unperfumed aftersun product can also be applied to help soothe the skin. If irritation persists then a 1% hydrocortisone cream (available from pharmacies) can be applied sparingly twice a day for up to 3 days. Until redness subsides, avoid hot baths & showers and any activity that would usually cause flushing. Always wait for any skin irritation or redness to subside before applying any other lotions, creams, deodorant, moisturiser or cosmetics to the treated areas. If necessary, use products that are unperfumed or suitable for sensitive skin. For at least 2 weeks after an IPL treatment, either avoid UV exposure completely or limit exposure and protect the treated areas with a high factor sunscreen (SPF 30+). Cleaning and storage Always switch o and unplug and allow the unit to cool before starting cleaning. Clean the crystal glass treatment window and the facial adapter after use by wiping with a soft, clean, dry cloth. Keep duo Salon dry. Never use chemical cleaning products. Store the device in a dry dust-free environment between 0oC and 60oC Troubleshooting Note: If you experience any problems with the device, please refer to below information to try to resolve it. If the device does not trigger a pulse.
- Make sure that the power cord is plugged properly into the base unit and the electrical outlet. Then ensure the power switch is on (in the I position).
- Verify there is full contact with the skin. The pulse button will activate a flash pulse only when the whole of the treatment window is in contact with the skin.14 | DUO SALON
FAQ’s Do IPL treatments actually work? Yes, IPL treatments are well tested and are proven to achieve long-term hair reduction results. Many studies have been documented by professional journals and by well- respected institutions. Is IPL safe? Yes, IPL is a recognised safe treatment which has been used for many years in both salons and home use devices. Duo Salon has been clinically tested and meets all European safety standards for a home use device. As with all home-use devices, it is essential to read and follow the instructions carefully to ensure safe use. Which body areas can I treat? The device is designed to remove hair everywhere below the cheek line with the most commonly treated areas being the legs, underarms, arms and bikini line. However, men are advised not use IPL hair removal on the face or neck. Nipples, areolae (around the nipple), the anus and genitals should be avoided. Does it really matter what hair colour I have? IPL treatments work best on black or dark brown hair as it’s the dark pigment in the hair that directs light energy to the follicle. It also works on brown, light brown / dark blonde hair, but may require more treatment sessions to achieve optimum results. IPL is not eective for red, white, grey or blond hair as there is insucient pigment to direct the light energy. Does it hurt? When Duo Salon is used correctly, most users feel a slight mild stinging or/and heat sensation at the time of the pulse light similar to that of snapping an elastic band on the skin. This is a sign that the device is working. These sensations should quickly diminish after treatment. When will I start to see results? Results are not immediate. Typically within two weeks some hairs in the treated area will naturally shed. Other hairs which were not in their growth phase at the time of treatment will remain. These can be treated with subsequent sessions at 2 week intervals. With each session you can expect to notice less and less hair regrowth. Will my hair grow back after a treatment? Results are cumulative so you can expect to see less hairs growing back after each treatment. Successfully disabling hair follicles is dependent on the growth phase at the time of treatment, so a number of treatments over a period of time yield the most eective results. The treated hairs do not grow back. However, certain conditions including natural ageing, hormonal changes and some medical conditions can induce new hair growth. Top up treatments can help to manage this. How long after sun exposure can the device be used? It is recommended to wait four weeks after unprotected sun exposure. Tanned skin contains more melanin that can increase the risk for adverse eects including burns and skin damage. To avoid these adverse eects it is important to allow sucient time for melanin levels to subside after tanning. Should I pull the hair out as part of or after the treatment sessions? No, it’s best to allow the hair to shed naturally over the next couple of weeks. Wiping over the area with a wet flannel can help to remove shedding hairs.DUO SALON | 15
Will the flash damage my eyes? The flash is very bright like a camera flash and can cause temporary bright spots in the vision in a similar way to a camera flash. To help avoid this phenomenon we recommend to use Duo Salon in a well-lit room and to look away or close the eyes when the unit flashes. To avoid damaging the eyes, never look directly at the flash up close or operate the device near to the eyes (ie. above the line of the cheek bone). Is long term use of the device dangerous for my skin? IPL treatments have been well tested and documented for many years and no side-eects or damage from long term use have been reported in that time. There is no UV light emitted. Can Duo Salon be used to remove facial hair such as chin hair? Women can use the device below the cheek line, on the upper lip, cheek, jaw, chin and neck. Always use the facial adapter provided and do not use the device around your eyes. Men should not use the device for facial treatment. Can men use Duo Salon? Yes, Duo Salon is suitable for men to use for the removal of body hair. Because of varying growth cycles some areas, such as the chest, may require more sessions over a longer period of time to treat fully. Men should not use the device for facial treatment.
