Small Diesel Locomotive

At the end of the 1920's the German State Railroad Company had a great need for small, powerful locomotives. At intermediate yards these locomotives were to be used in operations with one-man crews consisting of unskilled personnel. These operations would be light switching duties, serving industrial sidings, short transfer trains on main lines, etc.

The railroad was venturing onto technically new ground with the planning of small locomotives with motors. The development eventually went beyond various experimental locomotives to standard design locomotives of the following groups:

Group I = small locomotives up to 39 horsepower Group II = small locomotives with 40 to 149 horsepower

Decisions were made concerning dimensions, frame design, method of power transmission and the arrangement of subassemblies and operating controls.

In 1932 the German State Railroad placed orders for the first ten small locomotives in Group I with carburetor motors. Tests with various types of drive motors and transmissions followed. The following system of designations resulted:

Type of locomotive K = small locomotive

Propulsion system b = carburetor motor (gasoline) ö = diesel motor (oil) d = steam motor

s, later a = electric motor with power supplied from a storage battery

Transmission system e = electric transmission from an internal combustion motor f = fluid drive for power transmission

Thus, Köf II means: Small locomotive, Group II, with diesel motor and fluid hydraulic power transmission.

From 1932 to 1938 the German State Railroad purchased 887 small locomotives in Group II with various types of drive motors and transmissions, but with a unified body design. During the war another 226 units were added from 1939 to 1944.

These locomotives were far from sufficient for their intended service. Therefore, beginning in 1948 the DB ordered another 731 Köf II locomotives from different builders. The postwar units do not differ from the earlier locomotives externally or in dimensions, but they did benefit from various detail improvements such as welded frames and superstructures. Starting in 1954 almost all new Köf II units were equipped with air brakes. This allowed the maximum speed of 30 km/h (18.75 m.p.h.) to be raised to 45 km/h (28.13 m.p.h.).

In the 1950's older units were modernized at the same time that new locomotives were being purchased. The power transmission and motors were standardized to a large extent and most units were gradually retrofitted with air brakes. Some of the Köf II were equipped with a second main air tank. Switching couplers were also installed. Beginning in 1966 the locomotives were equipped as a group with electric warning bells and beginning in 1970 the cabs were equipped with side windows and doors so that they could be heated.

Class 321 = mechanical brakes, max. speed = 30 km/h (18.75 m.p.h.)

Class 322 = air brakes, max. speed = 30 km/h (18.75 m.p.h.)

Class 323/324 = air brakes, max. speed = 45 km/h (28.13 m.p.h.)

At this time the German Federal Railroad had more than 1,000 Group II small locomotives.

The Köf II is in use not only on the DB, but also on many other domestic and foreign railroads, in Switzerland for example. In addition, on many privately owned railroad, museum railroads and industrial railroads.

The prototype of Märklin's 5574 is the DB locomotive 323 021-6, the former Köf 4918, built in 1938 by Deutz under the factory number 20064/38.

Köf 6124 was built in 1951. During its service life it was successively assigned to Hanau, Dillenburg, Opladen, Oberhausen and Oberhausen-Osterfeld Süd. At the beginning of the 1980s this locomotive was restored as a museum locomotive to its original condition with a black paint scheme and Era III lettering.

  • The mode of operation is automatically recognized.
  • 80 multi-train addresses (4 of them for the Delta System) can be set. Address that set at the factory: 42.

  • Adjustable operating characteristics parameters (speed at the smallest speed level, speed at the highest speed level, acceleration delay, braking delay). Either the Control Unit, the Mobile Station, or the Central Station are required to set the operating characteristics parameters.

  • Märklin claw couplers front and rear that can be replaced with the reproduction prototype couplers included with this locomotive. When the reproduction prototype couplers are mounted on the locomotive, you must have curves with a radius greater than 3 meters or 188 inches. With the claw couplers you can use curves with a radius of 600 mm or 23-5/8".

  • The model is designed for operation on Märklin 1 Gauge track. As the consumer you assume the risk for operating on other makes of track.

Only in operation with the Control Unit, the Mobile Station, or the Central Station:

  • Controllable headlights that change over with the direction of travel.
  • Controllable locomotive operating sounds.
  • Controllable cab lighting.
  • Controllable sound effect for a hom.

- Minimizing of the acceleration and braking delay (switching range) that has been set for the locomotive.

Tips:

3.1 Connections between the track layout and the transformer

Rail joiners must fit well on the rails of the track to which they are joined to avoid voltage drop on the layout. We recommend that you install feeder wires every 2 to 3 meters (7 to 10 feet) using the 5654 feeder clips.

3.2 Operating the locomotive on grades

In contrast to the prototype a locomotive on a model railroad can operate up steeper grades. As a general rule a grade should be no steeper than 3%. In extreme situations a maximum grade of 5% is permissible, keeping in mind that the locomo-tive's tractive effort will be less. The beginning and the end of the grade must always work gradually up to maximum grade for the route. The maximum allowable difference in grade between two track sections, each with a minimum length of 300 mm (11-3/4") is 1 to 1.5 percent.
