USER MANUAL Avent SCH530 PHILIPS

The Philips baby thermometer set allows you to accurately and conveniently measure your baby's temperature. The baby thermometer set is designed for your baby's safety, comfort, well-being and, therefore, your own peace of mind. It is part of a complete range of Philips Baby Care products. Please read this guide carefully before using the thermometer kit, and keep it for future reference.

The storage box contains three items:

  • A soother thermometer to reliably measure baby's temperature.

It is very convenient to use both for you and your baby.

  • An ordinary soother to let your baby get used to the shape.

You can use this soother as a regular soother.

  • A digital flexible-tip thermometer that measures baby's body

temperature rectally if you want added reassurance.

Make sure you follow the safety guidelines when using these items so that you don't expose your child to any risk.

Ways to use the thermometers

The most convenient way to measure your baby's temperature is to use the soother thermometer in accordance with these guidelines.

This method gives a reliable indication. If you need added reassurance (for example, if the first measured temperature is above 38^ ) then use the digital flexible-tip thermometer to take a measurement in the anus (rectal). Note that oral measurements are usually 0.5 to 1^ lower than the actual body temperature.

Children's temperature

The temperature of a child is normally between 36.5 and 37.5^

Remember though that a child's temperature can vary depending on age, activity, time of day, etc. Please also remember that some illnesses do not have high temperature as a symptom.Temperature measurement should not act as a substitution for consulting your physician. When reporting your child's temperature to a professional state the measurement method.

Important safeguards

  • Never attach any strings or cords to either soother.
  • Do not tie the soother around the child's neck, as it could strangle the child.
  • Before each use check the nipple of the soothers for tears or cracks and pull it to ensure that it is firmly attached to the shield. Do not use it if a defect is found or if it is loose.
  • After about six weeks of regular use dispose of the ordinary soother.
  • Sterilise* or boil the soother after use ( always detach thermometer measurement unit first) and store with covers in place to keep clean.
  • Clean soothers and thermometer before first use.
  • To avoid injury, never use the soother thermometer measurement unit separately.
  • Store the thermometers out of reach of children; they are not toys.
  • Ensure an adult supervises the use of the thermometers.
  • Do not use the thermometer if the display shows a . The battery is low and the measurements will be inaccurate
  • Do not use the soother thermometer as a regular soother as this reduces its useful life.

Caring for the thermometers

The thermometers are precision instruments so treat them with care. Don't drop them or expose them to shocks or high temperatures.

Only use them for the measurement of human body temperatures.

  • Do not store in direct sunlight or near a heat source.
  • Never sterilise nor boil the soother thermometer measurement unit.
  • Do not wash in dishwasher.
  • Do not put in microwave or microwave steriliser.
  • Never use any chemical solvents.
  • Do not bend or disassemble the measurement units.
  • Sterilising means destroying harmful bacteria at a temperature of 95^ C for more than 3 minutes. It does NOT mean sterilisation according to clinical standards. The Philips Baby Bottle Steriliser is suitable for sterilising the nipple, shield and cover.

Soother thermometer

The most convenient way to measure your baby's temperature is to use the soother thermometer. This is also the most comfortable method for baby. Don't use for 30 minutes after the baby has had hot or cold drinks as this causes an inaccurate measurement.

  • Push the on/off button (A-1) to switch on the thermometer.

(The display (A-2) shows an 'L' and a flashing '°C'.)

  • Place the soother in the baby's mouth and leave it there until the thermometer beeps four times.
  • The display now shows the measured temperature and the ^ C sign lights continuously.
  • Remove the soother from the baby's mouth.
  • Push the on/off button to switch off the thermometer. (Doing this extends battery power. The thermometer switches off automatically after about 10 minutes.)

Checking the last measured temperature

If you wish to compare temperatures then you can check to see what the last measured temperature was. This can only be done once before a new measurement. Push and hold the on/off button for about 3 seconds. The display shows the last measured temperature and an 'M' for memory. When you release the button this temperature is erased.

Battery low indication

This soother thermometer has a long-life battery which should last for about 2 to 3 years. If the display shows a battery is low and the thermometer has reached the end of its useful life. Do not use it any more.

Before disposing of the thermometer remove the battery and dispose of it in an environmentally friendly manner. (To gain access to the battery unclip the small cover.)

Cleaning the soother

Nipple, shield and cover can be sterilised* or boiled. Never sterilise nor boil the measurement unit. Before cleaning always remove the measurement unit from the nipple and shield as follows (see figure B):

  • Turn the measurement unit 90^ anticlockwise with respect to the shield.
  • Pull the measurement unit straight out of the nipple and shield. (Be careful not to bend the tip of the measurement probe.)

After boiling the nipple, shield and cover, drain and push out any remaining water and allow to dry.

To clean the measurement unit wipe it with a damp cloth.

Reassemble the soother as follows (see figure C):

  • Align the blocks of the measurement unit with the matching slots in the back of the shield.
  • Insert the measurement unit into the shield ensuring that the tip of the probe goes into the pocket inside the nipple.
  • Turn the measurement unit 90^ clockwise to lock into position.

  • Sterilising means destroying harmful bacteria at a temperature of 95^ C for more than 3 minutes. It does NOT mean sterilisation according to clinical standards. Philips Baby Bottle Steriliser is suitable for sterilising the nipple, shield and cover.

Digital flexible-tip thermometer

The soother thermometer is as accurate as the digital flexible-tip thermometer and is more convenient to use. However, because rectal measurement is inherently more accurate than oral measurement, the digital flexible-tip thermometer gives you an opportunity to reassure yourself.

Remove the digital flexible-tip thermometer from its storage cover. If available, use special plastic hygiene covers to cover the tip of the thermometer (these are available from most pharmacies).

For a rectal measurement of a baby's temperature proceed as follows:

  • Lubricate the tip of the thermometer (or hygiene cover) with a water-soluble jelly. Do not use a petroleum jelly.
  • Push the on/off button (A-1) to switch on the thermometer. (The display (A-2) shows an 'L' and a flashing "C".)
  • Lie the baby on its stomach or its side.
  • With one hand separate the baby's buttocks. With the other hand gently slide the tip of the thermometer no more than 12mm (1/2 inch) into the rectum. If you detect any resistance stop immediately.
  • Hold the baby firmly so that it cannot turn while the thermometer is inserted.
  • Keep the thermometer in place until it beeps four times.
  • Remove the thermometer and read the display.
  • Push the on/off button to switch off the thermometer. (Doing this extends battery power. The thermometer switches off automatically after about 10 minutes).

Measuring the temperature of older children

For older children and adults the digital flexible-tip thermometer can also be used to measure temperature in the mouth (oral) or under the arm (the least reliable method). If the thermometer has been used rectally without hygienic covers, we do not recommend using it for oral measurements.

Cleaning

Clean the thermometer after each use. Never sterilise nor boil the thermometer.

For home use, wipe the thermometer with a soft damp cloth or wash in water. The thermometer is water resistant.

Do not wash in the dishwasher.

Replacing the battery

The thermometer has a long-life battery which should last for about 2 to 3 years. If the display shows a battery is low. Replace the battery as follows before using the thermometer:

  • Remove the battery cover.
  • Use an insulated probe to remove the battery (a toothpick for example).
  • Insert the new battery (LR4I) with the positive side (+) facing upwards.
  • Secure the cover back in place.

Warning

Swallowing a button battery can be extremely dangerous.

Dispose of battery in an environmentally friendly way.

Do not dispose of in fire or it may explode.

Never attempt to recharge the battery.
