FOREWORD

The Zoom-Nikkor ED 180 - 600mm f/8 is a special super-telephoto zoom lens having an optical construction of 18 elements in 11 groups. To ensure maximum performance, the lens has been fitted with some "Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass" elements for control of chromatic aberration and reduction of other aberration. In this lens, the use of ED glass has enabled approximately 90% reduction of the secondary spectrum (i.e., the residual chromatic aberration) across the full 400 to 1000nm wavelength range, thus ensuring exceptional image sharpness and contrast at all apertures, including full aperture. In fact, the degree of correction obtained enables the elimination of the requirement for corrective refocusing for infrared photography.

The application of Nikon Integrated Coating (NIC) to air-to-glass lens surfaces further enhances performance by increasing image contrast and color rendition. At the same time, NIC acts to reduce flare and ghost images on the film resulting from powerful light sources within the picture angle of the lens.

The lens offers "automatic maximum aperture indexing" (AI) with suitably equipped cameras*, via the meter coupling ridge provided. The ridge and the auto diaphragm function together to permit full-aperture exposure measurement.

Other features which enhance the performance of this Zoom-Nikkor ED lens include its relatively compact size (the length is only 402mm ), the mechanical-compensation zooming system which enables both focusing and zooming via one control ring, the built-in rotatable tripod mounting collar for proper support when the lens is mounted on a tripod, the exceptionally close minimum focusing distance of 2.5m (8.5 ft), and the control ring locking screw for convenient securing of the control. The attachment size of the lens is 95mm for mounting screw-in filters and the screw-in lens hood included with the lens.

  • This lens is not equipped with a meter coupling shoe. When the lens is attached to a non-AI Nikon camera, measure the exposure via the stop-down method. (Please refer to the camera's instruction manual for details.)

MOUNTING

To mount the lens, position it in the camera's bayonet mount so that the mounting index dots on the lens and the camera body are aligned. Then, twist the camera body clockwise until it clicks and locks into place.

To disconnect the lens and camera body, press the lens release button on the body and, keeping the button depressed, twist the camera body counterclockwise.

MOUNTING ON THE TRIPOD

For maximum picture sharpness and freedom from camera shake, the use of a tripod is recommended at all times. This Zoom-Nikkor ED lens is fitted with a sturdy, fully rotatable (360^) tripod mounting collar for just such purposes.

To attach to the tripod, position the collar tripod socket on the tripod screw and tighten. To rotate the lens (with camera attached) for vertical or horizontal format, loosen the collar locking screw, rotate the lens to the desired position, and retighten the locking screw to secure the assembly. For precise positioning, clickstops are provided at 90^ intervals.

FOCUSING

B

The fully automatic diaphragm of this lens enables focusing with maximum image brightness at all times. To focus, loosen the locking screw securing the focusing/zooming control ring and turn the ring until the image on the focusing screen appears sharp and crisp; note that this lens remains at the same focus setting during zooming operation.

To prefocus the lens using the engraved distance scale settings, rotate the focusing/ zooming control ring until the desired camera-to-subject distance setting (as measured or estimated) is lined up opposite the distance scale index line engraved on the lens barrel.

In high or low temperatures, the focal length of the lens might be slightly different when compared with what it is in ordinary temperatures. In this case, you can rotate the focusing ring of the lens slightly beyond the infinity position to focus accurately.

Various interchangeable focusing screens are available for F2 and F3 Nikon cameras to suit any type of lens or picture-taking situation. Those which are recommended for use with this Zoom-Nikkor ED 180-600mm f/8 lens are listed below.

= Excellent focusing
= Acceptable focusing

The split-image rangefinder, microprism or crosshair area is dim. Focus on the surrounding matte area.

= Acceptable focusing

Slight vignetting (or moiré phenomenon in the case of the microprism) effects the screen image. The image on the film, however, shows no trace of this.

= Exposure measurement not possible; lens/ screen combination permits only focusing operation

Blank means not usable.

ZOOMING

C

Zooming operation is performed by sliding the focusing/zooming control ring in or out until the desired degree of magnification (or composition) is obtained. To facilitate setting the lens at a desired focal length, reference marks corresponding to focal length settings of 180mm , 200mm , 250mm , 300mm , 350mm , 400mm , 500mm and 600mm are provided. Of course, all intermediate focal length settings can be used.

DEPTH-OF-FIELD SCALE

Depth of field (i.e., the zone of acceptable image focus) can be checked by reading the curved, color-coded depth-of-field indicators engraved on the lens barrel. The pairs of colored lines on either side of the white distance index line correspond to f/numbers of the same color on the aperture scale. You can also observe the depth of field through the viewfinder by simply pressing the depth-of-field preview button on the camera body.

ABOUT THE NIKKOR ED SERIES

Correction of chromatic aberration in camera lenses has been limited, for the most part, to the use of techniques which bring two wavelengths of light, normally blue and red, to a common focus. Although known as "achromatic," lenses employing these designs exhibit a certain amount of undesirable residual dispersion (called the "secondary spectrum") which limits image contrast and sharpness, particularly at full aperture. Telephoto lenses are most prone to the ill effects of chromatic aberration, since secondary spectrum increases with focal length.

The Nikkor ED series consists of telephoto and super-telephoto lenses fitted with elements made of a Nippon Kogaku-developed special optical glass called "Extra-low Dispersion" (ED) glass. Although the optical characteristics of this new glass are similar to those of calcium-fluorite crystal, ED glass possesses a more constant refractive index over a wide range of temperatures and will, therefore, cause less of a focus shift. Also, ED glass is much harder and more resistant to scratches, enabling its use for front and rear lens elements to obtain optimum correction of chromatic aberration over the widest possible wavelength range. Some lenses within the ED series have been so fully corrected that image sharpness extends uniformly to the infrared region; for these lenses, corrective refocusing for infrared exposures is unnecessary. The remaining lenses have been built exceptionally compact due to the use of ED glass elements; for these lenses, however, corrective refocusing for infrared photography is necessary. Regardless of which type, ED-series lenses offer exceptional sharpness and full contrast for the most precise photography under the widest conditions.

  • Although you should always keep the lens surfaces clean, rough cleaning must be avoided. Wipe with a soft, clean cotton cloth moistened with alcohol to remove grease or fingerprints from the lens surfaces.
If you use ether in cleaning the lens, a smudge sometimes appears on the surface of a multi-coated lens. If this happens, wipe it again with a cotton cloth moistened with alcohol.
  • To protect the lens surface from dirt or damage, the use of a UV filter is recommended at all times. The lens hood also helps to protect the lens.
  • Keep the lens cap in place whenever the lens is not in use.
  • Attach both the front and rear caps when the lens is stored separately.
  • To ensure proper fit of the lens when stored in the leather lens case, set the lens' focusing ring to the infinity () setting.
