How to connect the Philips SPD3040 external hard drive?

Plug the power cord into the AC adapter, then connect the unit to the hard drive and a power outlet. Connect the USB cable to the hard drive's USB port and to a free port on the computer. A blue light turns on and a drive icon appears in Windows Explorer. For more details, see the Connection section of the manual.

How to safely disconnect the hard drive?

Click the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the system tray, select the device, then click Stop. Wait for the message 'Safe to Remove Hardware' before disconnecting the USB cable.

My computer does not recognize the hard drive, what should I do?

Check that all cables are properly connected and that the AC adapter is powered. Try a different USB port. If the problem persists, restart the computer. Make sure your operating system is compatible (Windows 2000/XP/Vista). For Mac, format the drive as FAT32.

Can I use this hard drive with a Mac?

Yes, but the drive is preformatted as NTFS for Windows. To use it on a Mac, you must format it as FAT32. Note that formatting erases all data. See the Mac Installation section of the manual.

How to format the hard drive as FAT32 for Mac?

Back up your data first. On a Mac, open Disk Utility, select the Philips drive, then choose Erase and select the format 'MS-DOS (FAT32)'. Confirm. Note that FAT32 limits file size to 4 GB.

What is the warranty on this product?

Warranty information is located in the 'Philips Warranty' folder on the hard drive. You will need Adobe Reader to read them. The warranty may not apply in case of accidental damage or improper use.

What to do if the blue light does not turn on?

Check the power: is the AC adapter properly plugged in and the outlet working? Test the USB cable on a different port. If the light stays off, the hard drive may be defective. Contact Philips support.

The hard drive is making noise, is this normal?

A slight rotation and read/write noise is normal for a 7200 rpm hard drive. If the noise becomes loud, irregular, or is accompanied by clicking, it may indicate a problem. Back up your data and contact support.

How to maintain my external hard drive?

Place it in a ventilated area, away from water, shocks, and extreme temperatures. Use a dry cloth to clean it. Disconnect it properly before moving it. Avoid placing it on unstable surfaces.

Can I use this hard drive with Windows 10?

Yes, the hard drive is compatible with newer Windows operating systems via the USB 2.0 interface. It will be recognized automatically. For optimal performance, ensure your USB drivers are up to date.

What's in the box?

How to connect?

Put the Power Adapter (B) and the Power Cord (C) together and connect them to the external hard disk and a power outlet.

Plug the USB cable (D) in the USB port of your external hard disk. Connect the other side of the USB cable to an empty USB port of your computer.

A drive icon, Philips External Hard Disk, appears in Windows Explorer and the Blue light should light up. (To use the new hardware, the computer sometimes needs to be restarted)

Your hard disk is now ready to use and you can now save and copy data, just as you do when using your internal hard disk.

Double-click the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the task bar in the lower right part of the screen.
2 In the window that appears, select the name of the device that is to be removed, then click the Stop button.
3 When the Stop a hardware device screen appears, make sure the correct information is displayed, and then click the OK button.
4 When the message Safe to remove hardware appears, remove the drive from the computer's USB port.

Installation

Installation for Mac

The hard disk is preconfigured for Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista, with a NTFS format. For Mac, the hard disk needs to be formatted to FAT32.

How to find warranty information?

Look on your external hard disk and browse to the folder 'Philips Warranty'.

You need Adobe Reader software to open these files. If you don't have Adobe Reader, you can download it for free on www.adobe.com.

The Philips warranty may not apply if damage is caused by accidents, shock, misuse or neglect.
