Note:
According to extensive clinical studies, readings taken at the ear are comparable to readings taken orally by conventional thermometers.
SAFETY INFORMATION
- Only the sensor is water resistant, the device itself is not water resistant.
- Avoid touching the device on the sensor tip, thus ensuring that measurement accuracy is not affected by heating and soiling of the sensor casing.
- The thermometer is only to be used for measuring the temperature of the human body.
- Incorrect operation and improper handling may cause problems with the appliance and/or injury to the user.
- The unit may be used only for its intended purpose. No liability is accepted for any damage arising from improper use or faulty handling.
- Never attempt to repair the appliance yourself.
- Never attempt to open the housing.
- Do not introduce objects of any kind into the housing.
- Do not operate the unit if the unit has been dropped or otherwise damaged. In such cases, send the unit to a service centre for testing and any necessary repairs.
- This unit is not suitable for commercial use.
- Children cannot recognise the dangers associated with improper handling of electrical devices. You should therefore never allow children to use electrical appliances except under supervision.
- Do not throw batteries away with your household rubbish! Please dispose of batteries in accordance with the law! Batteries are hazardous waste! Never short-circuit a battery! Do not throw the battery into the fire! Keep batteries away from children!
- The appliance contains high-precision components. You should keep it away from extremes of temperature, humidity and direct sunlight. Avoid dropping or knocking the unit and protect it from dust.
-
The temple and ear thermometer is not suitable for rectal measurements.
-
The accuracy of measurements may be limited by the following factors: increased sweat formation on the forehead, the intake of vasoconstrictive medication and skin irritation. The temple and ear thermometer is calibrated for ear temperature measurement at the manufacturer, inside the ear the sensor is protected against external temperature and consequently produces a more precise measurement. On the temple or forehead the skin is cooler, depending upon ambient temperature, i.e. the measurement displays 0.5 × 0.6^ C less than inside the ear. In an extremely cool environment this deviation may be even greater.
- Please remember that this does not replace a visit to your doctor.
- Self-diagnosis and self-treatment using this measurement device are dangerous. Only a doctor can evaluate your measurements. It is important that you follow the instructions of your doctor.
- Clean the water resistant sensor after use. Read the chapter on cleaning and care for more details.

PRODUCT INFORMATION
The temple and ear thermometer is a delicate electronic device designed for the reading of body temperature. It allows accurate and reliable readings by reception of the infrared rays in the ear or at the temple. The thermometer converts the infrared energy measured into a temperature value. However, it should be noted that the body's temperature varies depending upon age and the time that the reading is taken. This devise may also be used to measure other types of temperature, for instance, of the skin, water, milk and ambient temperature. It is important to point out that it is not necessary for the thermometer to be in direct contact with the material. The optimum distance between the object and the thermometer is approximately 0.2-0.39 inch (0.5-1.0 cm).
BATTERY INSTALLATION / REPLACEMENT
Please only replace the battery when the weak battery symbol appears in the LCD display (E) (see page 21).
- Slide back the battery cover (B).
- Lever out the old battery with a suitable tool (e.g. a small slotted screwdriver).
- Please use a type CR-2032 button cell battery.
- Insert the battery with the + terminal facing upwards.
- Slide the battery cover (B) back into position.
- Please dispose of old batteries at the foreseen collection points. Read the chapter on waste disposal and care of the environment for more details.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
The meanings of the symbols can be found on pages 20 and 21 of this instruction manual.
Switching on the temple and ear thermometer:
- Press the On/Off button (D) for one second, the device is switched on following calibration.

- After calibration "M1" or "M2" (memory position 1 or memory position 2) appears on the display (fig.2). Press the On/Off button (D), if you wish to move from one memory position to the other. The most recent measurement is displayed after 2 seconds.

Fig. 2
Switching off the temple and ear thermometer:
- Hold down the On/Off button (D) for approximately 5 seconds. The device is switched off automatically after one minute.
Measurements in the ear (most accurate measurement):
- Introduce the sensor (A) deep into the ear. The sensor (A) must be positioned in the ear canal in order to record the sustained heat of the eardrum (See fig. 3).
- Press the On/Off button (D) briefly. You will hear an acoustic signal. Remove the temple and ear thermometer in order to read the results on the display (fig.4).

Measurements on the temple/forehead:
Please note that the ambient temperature outside of the ear may influence the measurement result. The cooler the ambient temperature, the cooler the skin is, i.e. the measurement may be 0.5 - 0.6^ below that of the temperature in the ear. Alternatively, you can also take a measurement from the temple or forehead.
- Hold the sensor (A) directly on the temple. Press the On/Off button (D) briefly. You will hear an acoustic signal. This confirms the measurement. You can now read the result from the LCD display (E).
Changing the display from ^ C / ^ F
This temple and ear thermometer can be altered from Celsius to Fahrenheit.
- Hold down the On/Off button (D) and press the save button (C) briefly. (See fig. 5.1 and 5.2)

Meaning of the face symbols:
In the case of a result below 38 degrees Celsius a smiling face will appear on the LCD display (E), in contrast, a sad face is displayed at temperatures above 38 degrees, with 2 acoustic signals also heard. (See fig. 6 and 7)

Error message on the LCD display:
The measurement temperature of the device lies between 10^ and 50^ Celsius. In the event of a result below 10 degrees «Lo» appears, at over 50 degrees «Hi» is displayed (see fig. 8 and 9).

Saving measurements:
The temple and ear thermometer automatically saves the last 10 measurements, numbered from 0 to 9. The most recent measurement is shown in the upper left as 0, the oldest measurement as 9.
(See fig.10)

- To access the latest measurements press the memory button (C).
- Repeated pressing of the memory button (C) enables the values from 0 to 9 to be accessed individually, on after another.
- It is advisable to wait at least 5 seconds between individual measurements in order to ensure measuring accuracy.
STORAGE
Store the device in the box provided after use.

CLEANING AND CARE
Never use harsh cleaning fluids or place the temple and ear thermometer into water or other fluids.
Cleaning of casing:
The casing of the temple and ear thermometer is not water resistant, please use a dry cloth for this.
Cleaning of sensor:
Please clean the water resistant sensor with a soft, damp cotton cloth or cotton wool buds. An alcohol solution may also be used.
TROUBLE SHOOTING
Permanent display of insufficient temperature
- The sensor is not inserted far enough into the ear canal. The tip must be entered deeply, otherwise measurements may be too low.
- The sensor is dirty. Clean the sensor (A) with a soft damp cloth or cotton wool buds with alcohol solution.
The result is outside of the measurement range
- Switch the device on prior to inserting it in the ear or holding it to the temple. It is possible that the measured temperature lies outside of the range when you begin the measurement, before the sensor reaches the eardrum or temple. Please repeat the measurement.
Weak battery
- If the weak battery signal appears, please replace the button cell battery (see battery replacement).
