Conventions about this manual

< The types of functions and operations that can be used for a particular disc vary depending on the features of that disc. In some cases, these functions and operations may differ from the descriptions given in this Owner’s Manual. In this event, follow the instructions given on the screen. This Owner’s Manual only covers basic disc operations. < For some operations, the PROHIBIT icon “A” may appear on the screen. This indicates that the operation described in this Operations Manual is not permitted for the current disc.

< Choose the installation location of your unit carefully. Avoid placing it in direct sunlight or close to a source of heat. Also avoid locations subject to vibrations and excessive dust, heat, cold or moisture.

Connection (FM antenna)

Connection (AM antenna)

AM Indoor Loop Antenna The high-performance AM loop antenna provided with this unit is sufficient for good reception in most areas. To stand the loop antenna on a surface, fix the claw to the slot in the antenna base.

< If the AM loop antenna provided does not deliver sufficient reception (often due to being too far from the transmitter or in a concrete building, etc.), it may be necessary to use an outdoor AM antenna.

Use either a high quality commercial AM antenna or, if not available, an insulated wire more than 5 m long, strip one end, and connect this to the terminal as shown. The antenna wire should be strung outdoors or indoors near a window. For better reception, connect the GND terminal to a reliable ground.

Connect the loop antenna’s wires to the AM antenna terminals.

Press the lever, insert the end of the cord, then release the lever. Make sure it is fastened securely by pulling the cord lightly. Make sure only the bare, stripped wire is inserted in the jack and that no plastic insulation is preventing contact between the antenna wire and terminal. Place the antenna on a shelf or hang it on a window frame, etc., in the direction which gives the best reception. Keep all other wires such as power cords, speaker wires or interconnect wires as far away as possible from the antenna.

Even when using an outdoor AM antenna, do not disconnect the AM loop antenna.

ENGLISH SUBWOOFER Caution:

To avoid damaging the speakers with a sudden high-level signal, be sure to switch the power off before connecting the speakers. Check the impedance of your speakers. Connect speaker with an impedance of 4 ohms or more. The black speaker terminals are – (negative). Generally, the + side of the speaker cable is marked to make it distinguishable from the – side of the cable. Connect this marked side to the + terminal and the unmarked side to the black – terminal.

The metal portions of the two separate wires should not touch or an electrical short can occur. Shorted wires can create a fire hazard or induce a failure in your equipment.

How to connect speakers:

1. Turn the terminal cap counterclockwise to loosen it. The speaker terminal caps cannot be fully removed from the base. 2. Insert the wire into the terminal fully and turn the terminal cap clockwise to securely connect it:

Prepare the speaker cables for connection by stripping off approximately 10 mm or less of the outer insulation.

(Removing too much insulation may lead to a short circuit if the bared wired should come in contact with each other.) Twist the strands of the stripped wires tightly together: Make sure none of the wire insulation is under the terminal, only the bare, stripped wire. 3. Make sure it is fastened firmly by pulling the cable lightly.

Connect a subwoofer using a commercially-available RCA cable. Use a subwoofer with built-in amplifier referred to as a “powered subwoofer”.

Connection to a TV CAUTION:

< Switch off the power to all equipment before making connections. < Read the instructions of each component you intend to use with this unit. < Be sure to insert each plug securely. To prevent hum and noise, avoid bundling the signal interconnection cables together with the AC power cord or speaker cables.

Settings (General Setup Page)

Because the shape of the television or monitor may not match the shape of the movie frame, you may need to change the way in which the image is displayed to avoid distortion on older televisions, which use a 4:3 aspect ratio; high-definition televisions use 16:9 (as do movies).

Note that you may need to read your television’s manual in conjunction with this section in order to achieve the best results. Some discs do not allow the aspect ratio to be changed and you will therefore have to change the aspect ratio on the TV. Make this setting while playback is stopped; you cannot do this while playing back a disc.

4:3 LETTER BOX This mode is used with 4:3 televisions. 4:3 images are displayed normally. 16:9 images are visible at their full width, but a blank area is left at the top and bottom of the screen.

NOTE: If the unit is set to a foreign language and you find it impossible to read the menu settings, you can restore all the factory default settings, and the menus will appear in English again (all other settings will be wiped out).

ON (Default): The screen saver starts up if nothing is played back and no operations are performed for 3 minutes. OFF: The screen saver does not start up.

In case you need the registration code to play DivX files, select this. The registration code of the player will be displayed.

Use with a 16:9 wide television.

< Some wide-screen discs that do not permit Pan & Scan mode playback are automatically played in Letterbox mode.

< Depending on the DVD, 4:3 Letterbox may be selected automatically instead of 4:3 Pan & Scan and vice versa. < If WIDE is selected and a normal TV is connected, 16:9 content will appear distorted during playback (objects look thin).

4:3 PAN SCAN This mode is used with 4:3 televisions. 4:3 images are displayed normally. When showing 16:9 programs, the full height of the screen is used, but the left and right part of the image are cut off.

Select the desired language for onscreen menus from the following:

Picture noise. e If video from this system has to go through your VCR to get to your TV, the copy-protection applied to some DVD programs could affect picture quality. Please connect the unit directly to your TV. The image is distorted or monochromatic. e Make sure that the PAL-NTSC setting matches the television/monitor (see page 36). e Adjust the aspect ratio to correspond to the television/monitor in use (see page 33). The aspect ratio of the screen cannot be changed. e The aspect ratio might be fixed by the disc. Picture and sound don’t match up. e With some TV sets there may be a short pause from when the video signal is received until the image appears. If the sound from the speaker does not match the TV image, minimize the volume level of the DR-H300 and output the sound from the TV.

Cannot listen to any station, or signal is too weak. e Tune in the station properly. e Rotate the FM or AM antenna for the best reception position. Though the broadcast is stereo, it sounds monaural. e Press the STEREO/MONO button.

Beware of condensation

When the unit (or a disc) is moved from a cold to a warm place, or used after a sudden temperature change, there is a danger of condensation; vapor in the air could condense on the internal mechanism, making correct operation impossible. To prevent this, or if this occurs, leave the unit turned on for one or two hours. Then the unit will stabilize at the temperature of its surroundings.

If normal operation cannot be obtained, unplug the power cord from the outlet and plug it again. This resets the internal micro-computer which can be disturbed during electrical storms, power interruptions, et cetera.

If unplugging the power cord does not solve the proble, try the following procedure to reset the internal micro-computer.

1. Turn the unit on. 2. Press the STOP button while holding down the PLAY/PAUSE button.

3. Release the STOP button when “DR-H300V**” appears on the display.

4. Release the PLAY/PAUSE button. 5. Press the STOP button.

ENGLISH If the surface of the unit gets dirty, wipe with a soft cloth or use diluted neutral cleaning liquid. Be sure to remove any fluid completely. Do not use thinner, benzine or alcohol as they may damage the surface of the unit.
