1 CAUTIONS ON HANDLING When not Using

Cautions on Use – Speaker System 2 Avoid placing the speaker systems in places exposed

When moving this unit 2 Do not shock this unit. 2 Always check that the connection cords disconnected before moving this unit.

to direct sunlight for long periods of time or near heaters or other heating equipment. Placing in humid or dusty places may result in damage. Do not apply inputs exceeding the speaker system's max. input (the input which can be applied a short period of time with regular program sources). The output terminals may differ depending on the amplifier being used. Consult the amplifier's instructions. Clipping or other problems may occur in the output waveform when using the speaker systems with a high output and the amplifier's tone controls set to the maximum. Avoid using them under these conditions. Never play such special signals as a tape recorder's fast-forwarding signals or sine waves continuously. When moving the speaker systems, be careful not to apply excess force to the speaker nets. Doing so could damage the speaker units.

Other Cautions 2 Note that color blotching may occur on a TV, etc., due

to interaction with the speaker system if there is a magnet or an object generating magnetic force nearby. Examples: (a) When there are magnets on the door of the rack, stand, etc. (b) When a health device, etc., equipped with magnets is placed nearby. (c) When toys or other objects using magnets are placed nearby. 2 Note that the illustrations in this instructions may differ from the actual set for explanation purposes. 2 Be sure to keep the operating instructions. After reading these operating instructions, store them in a safe place. We also recommend filling in the necessary items on the back cover.

Cleaning 2 Use a wiping cloth and wipe lightly to remove dirt

from the cabinet and operation panel. 2 When using chemically treated cloths, follow the

precautions that have been written for them. 2 Do not use benzene, thinners, or other organic

solvents or insecticides on the main unit since they may cause a change in quality or color.

ENGLISH CAUTIONS ON HANDLING (continued) When installing, carefully examine the place and method of installation for safety. When using a stand, etc., follow the instructions included with the stand and check for safety before installing and using. DENON will accept no responsibility for damages or accidents caused by the unit falling.

Cautions on Installation – Speaker System 2 Please

stick the included anti-slip pads (cork, approximately 1mm thick) at bottom of the cabinet as below to prevent slipping. (SC-M53 only)

The quality of the sound produced from the speaker system is affected by the size and type (Japanese or Western) of the room, as well as by the method of installation. Consider the points listed below before installing the speaker system.

[ Speaker System (SC-M53 only) Bottom view ]

2 If the bass sound is overemphasized when the

speaker systems are installed directly on the floor, set them on concrete blocks or other hard stands. 2 Placing the speakers on a shelf or in a corner can boost the bass level of the speaker. If you want to reduce it, please place the foam plugs in the reflex port tubes that you can find on the back of the speakers.

Anti-slip pads (1mm thick)

CAUTION: • The sound quality can be adjusted by changing the depth of the foam plugs in the ducts. • Set the foam plugs to the desired depth. • Never insert the foam plugs deeper than the plate surface. • If this is done, it may not be possible to get them out and they may fall inside the set. • If the foam plugs should get stuck or fall inside the set, stop using the set immediately and contact your store of purchase or one of the service centers listed on the included “DENON Service Network”.

Anti-slip pads (1mm thick)

CAUTION: • To ensure safety, do not place any objects on top or lean objects against the speaker system. • The speaker may topple down or fall if force is applied to the sides. Be particularly careful to avoid this, as this could cause injury or other serious accidents. • Fix connection cord to prevent being caught on it and making loudspeakers topping down.

2 Note that placing the speaker system on the same

stand or shelf as a record player may result in howling. 2 If there is a wall, glass door, etc., directly in front of or behind the speaker system, cover the wall or door with a thick curtain to prevent resonance and reflection. 2 The speaker systems are of the low-leakage-flux type and can be used near televisions, but depending on the TV there may be color blotching on the picture. If this happens, turn off the TV’s power, wait 15 to 30 minutes, then turn the TV’s power back on. The TV’s automatic degaussing circuit should reduce the blotching on the picture. If blotching persists, move the speaker further away. 2 Also note that if there is a magnet or any device generating magnetic force nearby, interaction between this device and the speaker systems can cause the colors on the TV to become blotchy.

WARNING: • Be sure to fasten the speaker cords to a wall, etc., to prevent people from tripping over them or otherwise pulling on them accidentally, causing the speaker systems to fall. • Be sure to check for safety after installing the speaker systems. Afterwards, perform safety inspections at regular intervals to make sure there is no danger that the speaker systems will fall. DENON will accept no responsibility for damages or accidents caused by inappropriate choice of the place of installation or improper installation procedures.

2 CONNECTIONS Connecting the speaker terminals * Read the amplifier’s operating instructions carefully before connecting, and be sure to use properly. Be sure to turn the amplifier’s power off when connecting the speaker systems. • Use the included cords to connect the input terminals on the back of the speaker systems (see diagram) to the amplifier’s speaker output terminals. • Connect the speaker system for the left channel amplifier’s “L” terminals, the one for the right channel to the amplifier’s “R” terminals, matching the polarities (“+“ and “–“ marks). • Inverting the polarities will result in unnatural sound, with the phase off or no low bass sound. Also check that all two terminal knobs are tightly fastened. Connections

CAUTION: • Be careful to interconnect the positive (red(+)) and negative (black(–)) sides and the left and right speakers properly. • Connect the side of the included connection cord with the plain core wires to the red speaker terminal. • To prevent circuit problems, never short-circuit striped and plain core wires or the left and right cords.

(The red terminals on the right side are the “+” terminals, the black ones on the left side the “–” terminals.)

Loosen the terminal knobs, insert the cords core wires, then tighten the knobs.

3 REMOVING THE SPEAKER NET * The net on the front of the speaker systems can be removed. • To remove, grasp both sides of the net and pull forward. • To mount, line up the bosses in the four corners of the speaker net with the holes in the four corners of the cabinet and press in.
