water, rinse and then dry. Clean the inside of the coffee maker by brewing two full jugs of tap water (see brewing instructions). Do not place coffee in the filter holder for this initial cleaning. Note: At the end of the first cycle turn the coffee maker off and wait ten minutes. Turn the unit on and brew a second jug of water. Replace the disassembled parts. ■ SPECIAL CARE FOR YOUR JUG Note : Any glassware is not covered by the guarantee. A damaged jug may result in possible burns from hot liquid. To avoid breaking the jug: 1 Do now allow all the liquid to evaporate from the jug. Do not heat the jug when empty. 2 Discard the jug if damaged in any manner. A chip or crack could result in breakage or contaminate liquid contents with glass particles. 3 Never use abrasive scouring pads or cleansers as they may scratch and weaken the glass. 4 Do not place the jug on or near a hot gas or electric burner, in a heated oven, or in a microwave oven. 5 Avoid rough handling and sharp blows. ■ BREWING INSTRUCTIONS (Illustrations 1 to 4) 1 Place the coffee maker on a flat, stable, heat resistant surface. 2 Plug the coffee maker into an electrical socket, which meets the voltage indicated on the appliance. 3 Fill the jug with fresh, cold tap water. Markings on the tank indicate the level of water required for brewing the desired number of cups. 4 Place a coffee filter paper in the filter holder. Measure one level tablespoon of regular grind coffee for each cup of coffee desired. For stronger or milder coffee, adjust the amount of coffee to suit your taste. 5 Return the filter holder to its base and close the lid. 6 Place the jug on the warming plate. 7 Switch the control button to on. The on light will indicate the unit is in operation. 8 If your wish to serve a cup of coffee before the end of the brewing cycle simply remove the jug from the warming plate. Dripping will automatically cease. Return the jug to its position on the warming plate within 45 seconds and brewing will resume. 9 Upon completion of the brewing cycle, wait approx one minute before using to allow any last traces of water remaining in the water tank to filter through. The jug lid should be kept in place to facilitate safe serving and help keep the coffee at a proper serving temperature. 10 To keep the coffee hot, return the jug to the warming plate after serving. The warming plate will automatically maintain the ideal serving temperature providing the coffee maker is switched on. 11 Switch the control button to off when the jug is empty or when the unit is not in use. 12 To brew another jug of coffee, turn the unit off and wait 10 minutes to allow the heating element to cool. Important : if the unit is not allowed to cool sufficiently before repeated use, water placed in the water tank may become overheated and a spray of steam could be released from the opening, creating a risk of burns. ■ BREWING A SECOND POT OF COFFEE As mentioned above, it is recommended that the coffee maker should be switched off for 10 minutes between cycles in order to allow the unit to cool. While the unit is in the off position, dispose of used coffee and rinse the jug and filter holder in water. Place a fresh filter paper in the holder then repeat brewing procedure.
1 Store coffee in a cool dry place. Once coffee has been opened, keep it tightly sealed in the refrigerator to maintain freshness. 2 For optimum coffee, buy whole beans and grind them finely just before brewing. 3 Do not re-use coffee grounds since this will greatly impair coffee flavour. 4 Re-heating coffee is not recommended. Coffee is at its peak flavour immediately after brewing. 5 Small oil droplets on the surface of brewed black coffee are due to the extraction of oil from the coffee grounds. Oiliness may occur more frequently if heavily roasted coffee is used. Over extraction may also cause oiliness, indicating a need to clean your coffee maker. ■ CARE AND CLEANING OF YOUR COFFEE MAKER Always make sure the coffee maker is unplugged and the warming plate is cool before attempting to clean it. After daily use, the filter holder and jug should be washed in warm soapy water. Wipe exterior with a damp cloth to remove superficial stains. For stubborn stains, use a nylon or plastic pad with a non-abrasive cleanser. Do not use metal scouring pads or abrasive cleansers. Special cleaning of your coffee maker is recommended at least once a month, depending on frequency of use and quality of water used in the unit. If the water in your area is especially hard, the following cleaning procedure should be performed every two weeks, since minerals in water can detract from the flavour of the coffee and possibly lengthen the brew time. 1 Fill the jug with one part white vinegar to three parts cold water. Pour the water and vinegar solution into the water tank. 2 Place a paper filter in the filter holder and swing to closed position. Place jug on the warming plate. Switch control to on. During cleaning, more steam will occur than during normal brewing. 3 Keep the coffee maker on until the jug is half full. Switch control to off. When liquid stops dripping from the filter holder into the jug allow 15 minutes. When cooled, pour liquid back into the water tank. 4 Replace holder and return jug to hot plate. 5 Switch control to on. Repeat procedure, allowing all the cleaning solution to empty into the jug. After dripping has stopped, discard contents of the jug. 6 After allowing the coffee maker to cool for 10 minutes, rinse it out by filling the jug full of cold water. Ensure a fresh paper filter is placed into the filter basket before switching on. 7 At the end of the brew cycle, switch the control to off. Discard water in the jug. Remove used filter and wash jug and filter holder in hot soapy water. Dry parts. 8 When the coffee maker has cooled, wipe the exterior with a dry cloth. Any servicing requiring disassembly other than the above cleaning should be performed by our authorised service centre.
