Read this user manual carefully before you use the appliance and save it for future reference.

Danger

- Do not immerse the appliance or the base in water or any other liquid.

Warning

- Check if the voltage indicated on the appliance corresponds to the local mains voltage before you connect the appliance.

- Do not use the appliance if the plug, the mains cord, the base or the appliance itself is damaged.

- If the mains cord is damaged, you must have it replaced by Philips, a service centre authorised by Philips or similarly qualified persons in order to avoid a hazard.

- This appliance is not intended for use by persons (including children) with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, unless they have been given supervision or instruction concerning use of the appliance by a person responsible for their safety.

- Children should be supervised to ensure that they do not play with the appliance.

- Keep the mains cord out of the reach of children. Do not let the mains cord hang over the edge of the table or worktop on which the appliance stands. Excess cord can be stored in or around the base of the appliance.

- Do not place the appliance on an enclosed surface (e.g. a serving tray), as this could cause water to accumulate under the appliance, resulting in a hazardous situation.

- Hot water can cause serious burns. Be careful when the kettle contains hot water.

- Do not touch the body of the kettle during and some time after use, as it gets very hot. Always lift the kettle by its handle.

• Never fill the kettle beyond the maximum level indication. If the kettle has been overfilled, boiling water may be ejected from the spout and cause scalding.
• Do not remove the lid while the water is heating up. Be careful when you remove the lid immediately after the water has boiled: the steam that comes out of the kettle is very hot.
• This rapid-boil kettle can draw up to 13 amps from the power supply in your home. Make sure that the electrical system in your home and the circuit to which the kettle is connected can cope with this level of power consumption. Do not let too many other appliances draw power from the same circuit while the kettle is being used.
• Only use the kettle in combination with its original base.

Caution

• Always place the base and the kettle on a dry, flat and stable surface.
• The kettle is only intended for heating up and boiling water. Do not use it to heat up soup or other liquids or jarred, bottled or tinned food.
• Always make sure you fill the kettle at least up to the 0.5l indication to prevent the kettle from boiling dry.
• Depending on the hardness of the water in your area, small spots may appear on the heating element of your kettle when you use it. This phenomenon is the result of scale build-up on the heating element and on the inside of the kettle over time. The harder the water, the faster scale builds up. Scale can occur in different colours. Although scale is harmless, too much scale can influence the performance of your kettle. Descale your kettle regularly by following the instructions given in chapter ‘Cleaning and descaling’.
• Some condensation may appear on the base of the kettle. This is perfectly normal and does not mean that the kettle has any defects.
• Do not let any water run into the temperature knob.
• This appliance is intended to be used in household and similar applications such as:

1 staff kitchen areas in shops, offices and other working environments;
2 farm houses;
3 by clients in hotels, motels and other residential type environments;
4 bed and breakfast type environments.

- This appliance has not been calibrated for commercial or scientific use. Temperatures may be up to 5°C lower or higher, which is within the range of optimal brewing temperatures for each type of tea and other hot beverages.

Boil-dry protection

This kettle is equipped with boil-dry protection. The boil-dry protection automatically switches off the kettle if it is accidentally switched on when there is no water or not enough water in it. The on/off switch goes to 'off' position and the power-on light goes out. Let the kettle cool down for 10 minutes. Then lift it from its base to reset the boil-dry protection. The kettle is now ready for use again.

Electromagnetic fields (EMF)

This Philips appliance complies with all standards regarding electromagnetic fields (EMF). If handled properly and according to the instructions in this user manual, the appliance is safe to use based on scientific evidence available today.

Before first use

1 Remove stickers, if any, from the base or the kettle.
2 Place the base on a dry, stable and flat surface.
3 Use the cord winder to adjust the length of the cord (Fig. 2).
Turn the cord winder clockwise to make the cord shorter or anticlockwise to make it longer.
4 Rinse the kettle with water.

5 Fill the kettle with water up to the maximum level and let it boil once (see chapter 'Using the appliance').
6 Pour out the hot water and rinse the kettle once more.

Using the appliance

1 Remove the lid (Fig. 3).

Turn the lid anticlockwise until the line on top of the kettle is aligned with the line on the lid that indicates the 'open' position.

2 Fill the kettle with water (Fig. 4).

Note: You can also fill the kettle through the spout.

3 Put the lid back onto the kettle (Fig. 5).

Put the lid on the kettle and turn the lid clockwise until the line on top of the kettle is aligned with the line on the lid that indicates the 'close' position.

4 Place the kettle on its base and put the plug in the wall socket.

The appliance is now ready for use.

Boiling water

To boil water, you only have to do one thing:

1 Press the on/off button. (Fig. 6)

The light ring around the on/off button lights up and the 100^ C light starts to flash to indicate that the kettle is heating up water to boiling point (Fig. 7).
While the water heats up, the current temperature is shown by the number of lights that are on. The 100^ C light continues to flash (Fig. 8).

2 The kettle brings the water to the boil.

When the water boils, you hear an audible signal and the kettle switches off automatically.
The light ring around the on/off button goes out and the 100^ C light stays on for 120 seconds to let you know the water has just boiled (Fig. 9).

Note: You can stop the heating process at any time by pressing the on/off button or removing the kettle from the base. If you remove the kettle from the base when it is operating, all settings are lost.

Setting the water temperature

With the SET TEMP button on the kettle, you can heat up the water to different temperatures for different types of hot drinks: 100°C (boiling water)/90°C/80°C/40°C (or 100°C (boiling water)/90°C/80°C/70°C for the beige-wood brown model).

1 Make sure the kettle is empty. Then fill it with cold water.

To make sure the kettle accurately heats up the water to the set temperature, fill the kettle with at least 0.5l water.

2 Press the SET TEMP button one or more times to set the desired temperature (Fig. 10).

The light of the selected temperature lights up.

- The symbols for hot drinks on the lid have the following meaning: (Fig. 11)

1 'Green tea' symbol: setting for heating up water to the required temperature for white, mate or green tea (80°C).
2 'Coffee beans' symbol: setting for heating up water to the required temperature for instant coffee or drip filter coffee (90°C).
3 'Black tea/herbal tea/hot chocolate' symbol: setting for heating up water to the required temperature for black tea, herbal tea, redbush tea, hot chocolate, (instant) soup, pasta, rice and noodles. Only at this setting, the water is boiled (100°C).

- Beige-wood brown model: (Fig. 12)

1 'Green tea' symbol: setting for heating up water to the required temperature for green tea and white tea (70°C), green tea (80°C) or green tea and oolong tea (90°C)
2 'Black tea/herbal tea/redbush' symbol: setting for heating up water to the required temperature for black tea, fruit tea, herbal tea and redbush tea. Only at this setting, the water is boiled (100°C).

Note: If you cannot set the desired temperature, the current temperature of the water in the kettle is higher than the temperature you want to set. The current temperature is shown by the number of lights that are on.

3 Press the on/off button to switch on the appliance (Fig. 6).

Note: If you do not press the on/off button within 10 seconds after setting the temperature, the set temperature is lost.

While the water heats up, the current temperature is shown by the number of lights that are on and the light of the set temperature flashes. (Fig. 13)
When the kettle has reached the set temperature, you hear an audible signal (one beep) and the kettle switches off automatically. The light ring around the on/off button goes off.
The light of the set temperature stays on for 120 seconds to let you know the water has just reached the preset temperature.

You can adjust the set temperature while the kettle is operating. This is only possible if the temperature of the water is still below the newly set temperature.

Note: If you remove the kettle from the base, the set temperature is lost.

Keeping water warm

You can use the keep-warm function to keep water warm at a temperature of 100^ C (boiling water)/ 90^ C/ 80^ C/ 40^ C (or 100^ C(boiling water)/ 90^ C/ 80^ C/ 70^ C for the beige-wood brown model).

There are two ways to keep water warm: at the current temperature, or at a temperature higher than the current temperature.

Only use the keep-warm function when there is at least 0.5l water in the kettle. If there is too little water in the kettle, the kettle may switch off within 30 minutes to protect the heating element.

1 Select a keep-warm method.

A. Keeping water warm at the current temperature

1 Press the KEEP WARM button (Fig. 14).

Note: If the current temperature is lower than 80^ (or 70^ for the beige-wood brown model), you first have to set the temperature (see point B below).

The light rings around the KEEPWARM button and the on/off button go on to indicate that the keep-warm function is activated (Fig. 15).

B. Keeping water warm at a higher temperature than the current temperature

1 Press the SET TEMP button one or more times to set the desired temperature (see section 'Setting the temperature' in this chapter).
2 Press the KEEP WARM button (Fig. 14).
3 Press the on/off button.
When the kettle heats up the water to keep it at the selected temperature, the light of the selected temperature flashes.
When the water has reached the selected temperature, the light of the selected temperature lights up continuously.

The light rings around the KEEPWARM button and the on/off button go on to indicate that the keep-warm function is activated (Fig. 15).
2 The kettle keeps the water warm for 30 minutes.
After 30 minutes, you hear an audible signal and the kettle switches off automatically.

Note: You can always stop the keep-warm process at any time. To do so, press the KEEP WARM button or the on/off button or remove the kettle from the base.

Note: If you remove the kettle from the base, the set keep-warm temperature is lost.

Note: If the set keep-warm temperature is 100^ , the kettle keeps the water at a temperature between 90^ and 100^ to avoid excessive steam development. If the selected keep-warm temperature is 90^ , 80^ or 40^ (or 90^ , 80^ or 70^ for the beige-wood brown model), the kettle keeps the water at a temperature between 5^ below and 5^ above the selected temperature.

Cleaning and descaling

Always unplug the base before you clean it

Always remove the kettle from the base before you clean the kettle.

Never immerse the kettle or its base in water.

Do not use abrasive cleaning agents, scourers etc. to clean the kettle.

Cleaning the kettle and the base

1 Clean the outside of the kettle and the base with a soft cloth moistened with warm water and some mild cleaning agent.

Do not let the moist cloth come into contact with the cord, the plug and the connector of the base.

Cleaning the filter

Scale is not harmful to your health but it may give your drink a powdery taste. The anti-scale filter prevents scale particles from ending up in your drink.

Clean the Triple action anti-scale filter regularly in the following way:

1 Take the entire filter out of the kettle (Fig. 16).
2 Slide the basket off the filter and take the stainless steel mesh out of the basket.
3 To clean the mesh, squeeze and rotate it under a running tap.
4 Gently clean the filter with a soft nylon brush.
5 Put the mesh back into the filter basket and slide the basket onto the filter again. Then slide the filter back into the kettle.

Note: You can also clean the filter in two other ways. Leave the filter in the kettle when you descale the kettle (see section 'Descaling the kettle') or remove it from the kettle and clean it in the dishwasher.

Descaling the kettle

Regular descaling prolongs the life of the kettle.

In case of normal use (up to 5 times a day), the following descaling frequency is recommended:

• Once every 3 months for soft water areas (up to 18dH).
• Once every month for hard water areas (more than 18dH).

1 Fill the kettle with white vinegar (8% acetic acid) up to three-quarters of the maximum level.
2 Add water to the maximum level.
3 Bring the water to boil.

4 Empty the kettle and rinse the inside thoroughly.
5 Fill the kettle with fresh water and boil the water.
6 Empty the kettle and rinse it with fresh water again.
7 Repeat the descaling procedure if there is still some scale in the kettle.

You can also use an appropriate descaler. In that case, follow the instructions on the package of the descaler.

Storage

- To store the cord, turn the cord winder in the bottom of the base clockwise (Fig. 17).

Replacement

You can buy replacement filters for your kettle from your Philips dealer or a Philips service centre. The table below indicates which filters are suitable for your electric kettle.

Environment

- Do not throw away the appliance with the normal household waste at the end of its life, but hand it in at an official collection point for recycling. By doing this, you help to preserve the environment (Fig. 18).

Troubleshooting

Signal Meaning/solution

One temperature light lights up continuously while the light rings around the KEEP WARM button and the on/off button are off.	After the water has reached the set temperature, the light of the set temperature stays on for 120 seconds.
Two or more temperature lights flash rapidly at the same time.	The water in the kettle has become more than 10^ hotter than the set temperature because:
	- there is too little water in the kettle. To prevent overheating, always fill the kettle with at least 0.5 litres water.
	- there is too much scale in the kettle. Descale the kettle before you use it again (see chapter ‘Cleaning and descaling’).
Two temperature lights flash alternately.	The kettle is out of order. Contact an authorised Philips service centre or the Consumer Care Centre in your country.

Signal Meaning/solution

The kettle beeps once. The water has reached the set temperature.

The kettle beeps twice. The kettle may have switched off at the end of the keep-

warm period (30 minutes). The kettle may also have switched off because there is too little water in it. Always fill the kettle with at least 0.5 litres water.

Problem Solution

I cannot set the desired temperature.	The current temperature of the water in the kettle is probably the same or higher than the temperature you want to set. If you wish to immediately re-heat the water, you can only select 100°C
I try to switch on the kettle but it switches off automatically.	The kettle has boil-dry protection and automatically switches off when there is too little water in it. You may need to put more water in the kettle (at least 0.5 litres).
The kettle switches off automatically when the keep-warm function is active.	There may be too little water in the kettle. Always fill the kettle with at least 0.5 litres water.
	The kettle keeps the water warm for 30 minutes and then switches off automatically. To keep the water hot longer, press the KEEP WARM button again.
I set the temperature but the kettle does not work.	You may not have pressed the on/off button within 10 seconds after setting the temperature. In this case, the set temperature is lost and you have to set the temperature again.
I pressed the KEEP WARM button but the kettle does not react.	The current temperature of the water is probably lower than 80°C (or 70°C for the beige-wood brown model). First set the desired keep-warm temperature and then press the KEEP WARM button and the on/off button (see section 'Keeping water warm' in chapter 'Using the appliance').
