Frequently Asked Questions - MDR-IF140K SONY

How to install the battery in the Sony MDR-IF140K headset?
Open the battery compartment cover located on the left earpiece housing. Insert one AAA battery (alkaline or manganese) observing polarity (+ and -). Close the cover. The power indicator lights up red when the headset is on.
What is the maximum range of the infrared headset?
The effective range is about 7 meters (23 feet) within a 45 degree angle from the transmitter. Beyond that, interference may occur and the sound may be cut off automatically.
How to connect the transmitter to a TV or audio source?
Use the supplied connection cord. If the source has a headphone jack (PHONES), plug the stereo mini plug into the PHONES IN jack of the transmitter. If it has LINE OUT jacks, plug the phono plugs into the LINE IN jacks of the transmitter. Adapt with the Unimatch adapter if necessary.
What to do if the sound is cut off or noisy?
The sound cut-off function activates if the infrared rays are blocked or if you are out of range. Move closer to the transmitter, remove any obstacles between the headset and the transmitter, or point the infrared sensors toward the transmitter. Also check that the battery is not low.
How to replace the ear pads of the headset?
Gently pull off the old ear pad to remove it. Place the new ear pad around the earpiece housing, pressing it in until it is snugly fitted. Replacement ear pads are available from your Sony dealer.
What is the battery life and how to know when to replace it?
With an AAA alkaline battery, battery life is about 60 hours; with a manganese battery, about 28 hours. When the power indicator dims, or the sound becomes distorted or noisy, replace the battery as soon as possible.
Can I use a power adapter not supplied?
No, use only the AC adapter supplied with the transmitter. Using another adapter may damage the device. If your adapter has a voltage selector, set it to your country's voltage before plugging in.
How to avoid damaging my hearing with this headset?
Avoid listening at high volume for long periods. Always start at low volume and increase gradually. If you hear a ringing in your ears, lower the volume or stop listening. Also respect your surroundings by keeping the volume at a moderate level.
What to do if the transmitter does not turn on?
Check that the AC adapter is properly connected to the transmitter and to a working power outlet. Make sure the audio source is turned on and audio signal is present (the transmitter turns on automatically upon receiving a signal). If the problem persists, contact a Sony dealer.
The sound is distorted, what should I check?
If the transmitter is connected to the headphone jack, lower the volume of the audio source. Check that the headset battery is not low. If you are using the LINE IN jack of the transmitter with a source at high volume, the sound may distort: use the PHONES IN jack instead. Also make sure there is no direct light interference.

If the infrared sensors are covered by your hands when adjusting the volume, the mute function will be activated and volume may not be adjusted. In this case, move nearer toward the transmitter or orient the infrared emitters on the left housing towards the transmitter.

After listening to the programs

Take off the headphones, and then turn off the power.

Note

You may hear some noise when you disconnect the AC power adaptor from the transmitter before taking off the headphones.

Sound is automatically muted if noise increases

— Mute function

If the infrared rays are obstructed, or the headphones are used outside their effective range, noise will increase and sound will become hard to hear. To avoid potential ear damage as a result of noise, this function mute any sound from the headphones. Sound is automatically restored when you move nearer the transmitter or remove the obstruction.

If no audio signal is input for more than approximately 5 minutes

The transmitter turns off automatically.

Note

The brightness of the infrared emitters may not be uniform, however, this is not a malfunction.

The effective area of the transmitter

The illustration below shows the approximate area covered by the infrared rays emitted from the transmitter.

Transmitter
Infrared ray Approx. 3 m (118 1/8 in.) 45° Approx. 7 m (23 ft.) 45° Approx. 3 m (118 1/8 in.)

Notes

  • If you use the headphones at too great a distance from the transmitter, you may hear a hissing noise and if there is an object between the headphones and the transmitter, sound may be interrupted. These phenomena are inherent to infrared ray communication and do not mean that there is a problem with the system itself.
  • Do not cover the infrared sensors with your hands or hair.
  • When you use the headphones inside the area in the illustration above, the transmitter can be placed in front, behind or by the side of you.
  • The noise you may hear through the headphones may vary depending on the transmitter position and room conditions. It is recommended that you place the transmitter in a location that produces the clearest sound.
  • Do not use this system in areas exposed to direct sunlight or strong light. The sound may be interrupted.
  • Plasma displays may interfere with normal operation of this system.
