Comment brancher des enceintes sur le Technics ST-X990 ?

Utilisez les borniers à vis à l’arrière. Connectez le fil positif de l’enceinte à la borne rouge et le négatif à la borne noire. Veillez à respecter l’impédance minimale (4 ohms).

La réception FM est mauvaise, que faire ?

Vérifiez l’antenne FM. Utilisez une antenne extérieure ou une antenne filaire. Le câble peut aussi être endommagé. Assurez-vous que le sélecteur de bande est sur FM.

Comment nettoyer le récepteur ?

Débranchez l’appareil. Nettoyez le boîtier avec un chiffon doux légèrement humide. N’utilisez jamais de produits chimiques ou abrasifs. Pour l’intérieur, contactez un professionnel.

Puis-je connecter une platine vinyle ?

Oui, branchez la platine sur l’entrée Phono. Assurez-vous que la platine dispose d’un préampli phono intégré ou d’un niveau de sortie adapté. Le ST-X990 a un préampli phono intégré pour cellules MM.

Que signifie le voyant ‘Stereo’ qui clignote ?

Le voyant ‘Stereo’ clignote lorsque le signal FM est faible. Essayez de réorienter l’antenne ou de syntoniser une fréquence plus forte. Une fois la réception stable, le voyant reste fixe.

Comment utiliser la sortie casque ?

Branchez un casque stéréo sur la prise jack 6,35 mm en façade. La sortie casque désactive automatiquement les enceintes pour une écoute silencieuse.

L’appareil ne s’allume pas, que vérifier ?

Vérifiez que le cordon d’alimentation est bien branché et que la prise secteur fonctionne. Assurez-vous que le fusible n’est pas grillé (situé près de la prise d’alimentation). Si le problème persiste, contactez un service agréé.

Comment mémoriser des stations de radio ?

Syntonisez la station souhaitée, puis appuyez sur la touche Memory (ou ‘M’) et sélectionnez un numéro de présélection avec les touches Preset. La station est sauvegardée.

Puis-je brancher un lecteur CD ?

Oui, branchez le lecteur CD sur l’entrée Aux ou Tape. Utilisez des câbles RCA de bonne qualité. Réglez le volume progressivement.

Le son est distordu à haut volume, pourquoi ?

Cela peut provenir d’enceintes de puissance insuffisante (impédance trop basse) ou d’un réglage excessif des basses. Réduisez le volume ou vérifiez l’impédance des enceintes (minimum 4 ohms).

Suggestions for Safety

■ Use a standard electrical AC wall outlet

1. Use from an AC power source of high voltage, such as for air conditioners, is very dangerous.

Be extremely careful not to make a connection to the electrical outlet for a large air conditioner or central-heating unit which uses high voltage, because there is the possibility of fire.

1. A DC power source cannot be used.

Be sure to check the power source carefully, especially on a ship or other place where DC is used.

■ Connection and removal of the power cord plug

Installation of the AM loop antenna

1. Pay attention to the following points when attaching the antenna.

2. Do not attach it horizontally (to do so would impair reception).

3. Do not attach it close to metal surfaces (to do so would result in noise).

When attaching the antenna to a wall, column or rack

Find the height and direction of the antenna where reception is best and then fix it vertically to the wall, rack, etc.

SALM loop antenna (in week)

If this antenna is not properly installed, AM broadcasts will not be received. Be sure to connect the AM loop antenna even when an outdoor antenna is used.

• Do not attach it close to power cords, speaker wires, etc. (to do so would result in noise).

• Do not attach it close to a tape deck (when the tape deck is being used, chirping or beeping sounds may be received).

• Connect the AM loop antenna to the AM antenna terminals located on the rear panel of the unit.

When attaching the antenna to the unit

This type of installation may cause impaired reception or result in signal noise. If possible, attach the antenna to the rack, a wall, or a column.

Move the antenna toward the right or left to find the point of best reception.

Front Panel Controls and Functions

The indication AM used here includes both MW and LW.

"ower "STANDBY ⏻/ON" switch (POWER "ON/STANDBY ⏻")

This switch switches ON and OFF the secondary circuit power only. The unit is in the "STANDBY" condition when this switch is set to the "STANDBY " position. Regardless of the switch setting, the primary circuit is always "live" as long as the power cord is connected to an electrical outlet.

② Remote-control signal receptor (SENSOR)
③ FM mode selector (FM MODE)

This unit automatically switches to the stereo mode when a stereo broadcast is received. Press this selector to listen in the monaural mode. The FM stereo indicator will not illuminate in the monaural mode.

4 Tuning buttons (TUNING)

If the button is pressed momentarily and then released, the frequency will change at intervals of 0.05 MHz for FM and 9 kHz (or 10 kHz) for AM.

5 Band selectors (BAND SELECTOR)

FM: Press this button to listen to an FM broadcast. MW: Press this button to listen to an MW broadcast.

ALLOCATION: When the MW button is pressed for about 3 seconds, the MW frequency step will change to 10 kHz per step. (This step is set to 9 kHz before shipment.) In order to return to the original frequency indication, press this button for about 3 seconds again.

LW: Press this button to listen to an LW broadcast.

FREQ SHIFT: When the LW button is pressed for about 3 seconds during reception of an LW broadcast, the LW frequency will decrease by 2 kHz. In order to return to the original frequency indication, press this button for about 3 seconds again.

6 Preset-tuning buttons (1 \~ 0) (28 CHANNEL RANDOM PRESET TUNING)

These buttons are used to preset FM and AM broadcast frequencies into the memory of this unit, and also pressed to select the desired preset frequencies.

This button can be used to set the time at which the unit will be switched OFF.

5 Program-set button (SET)

This button can be used, when making the timer setting, to select the type of timer operation, the day, the time, etc. (Refer to pages 14\~15.)

② Timer-mode-cancel button (CANCEL)

This button can be used to erase the timer setting or to cancel a setting that is being made, if, for example, you decide to do something else.

6 Timer-mode/time-set buttons (SELECT)

These buttons can be used, when setting the present time, as well as for setting the day, time, etc. of the timer setting. (Refer to pages 9, 14\~15.)

Notes concerning use of dry batteries

• Be sure the batteries are inserted so that the positive (+) and negative (−) polarities are correct. Batteries installed with incorrect polarities may leak and damage the remote-control transmitter.
• Never subject the batteries to excessive heat or flame; do not attempt to disassemble them; and be sure they are not short-circuited.
• If the remote-control transmitter is not to be used for a long time, remove the batteries and store them in a cool dark place.

1. Note that the "E:" in the display will flash continuously when the unit is connected to a power source for the first time, or if the power cord is disconnected or there is any other interruption of power to the unit.

(Note that timer function memory will retain for approximately ten minutes after the power supply was interrupted.)

1. Other operations, such as switching OFF the unit, etc., cannot be done while the time is being set. To do so first press the timer-mode-cancel button, then perform the desired operation. Note that the time will start from the time displayed when the button was pressed.
2. If a mistake is made while making the setting, press the time-set button; then press the timer-mode/time-set buttons (when day, hour or minute is flashing ON and OFF) in order to make the resetting.

Memory Presettings

The indication AM used here includes both MW and LW.

With this unit you may preset as many as 28 radio broadcast stations: FM/AM random presetting. After broadcast stations have been preset as described below, any desired station can be quickly and easily selected.

Automatic memory presetting

The FM broadcasting stations, MW broadcasting stations, and LW broadcasting stations will be automatically preset in "channels" 1 through 28 for FM, 15 through 28 for MW, and 22 through 28 for LW, respectively.

Notes:

When MW is automatically preset, the FM stations on "channels" 15 through 28 will be replaced by the new MW stations. When LW is automatically preset, the MW station on "channels" 22 through 28 will be replaced by the new LW stations.

2 Switch the amplifier ON, and set it for listening to radio broadcasts.

① Press the button and hold slightly (frequency will change continuously).

② Release it when approaching the desired exact frequency, and then press the button again momentarily (frequency change will stop).

③ Press the button momentarily (frequency will change each time the button is pressed), and tune to desired frequencies.

5 Press and then release when the frequency indication begins to change.

The frequency will change upward, and the automatic presetting will begin with the next broadcasting station. It will continue to preset consecutive broadcast stations.

6 Confirm the names (call signs, etc.) of the broadcasting stations which are preset to each channel, and enter them on the station memory file sheet (page 12).

Notes:

1. For automatic presetting in areas where there are less than 28 FM stations, the remaining channels (through channel 28) will be left empty. The empty channels can be filled by using manual memory presetting.
2. If a new broadcasting station is preset into a channel, the broadcasting station which was previously entered in that channel will be automatically erased.
3. For AM broadcasts with extremely strong signal transmissions, the frequency memorized may be slightly different from the correct frequency. If this occurs, use the manual control to memorize.

Listening to Radio Broadcasts.

Note:

To prevent noise while listening to an FM or AM broadcast, switch OFF the compact disc player and turntable.

When selecting channel 1 or channel 2, enter the selection as "01" or "02". If only "1" or "2" is pressed, channel access will be delayed by two seconds.

■ "Most-recent" memory

The most-recent memory is a system by which the unit "remembers" the FM or AM broadcast station last heard when this unit is switched OFF, and automatically tunes to that station the next time the power is switched ON.

■ "Back-up" memory

This is the function which preserves the preset memory and most-recent memory functions. In the event of a power failure, or if the power cord of the tuner is disconnected from the electric outlet, the back-up memory will preserve the preset memory and most-recent memory functions for as long as approximately one week.

■If the memory setting is erased

The memory settings will be erased in the following cases.

For example:

1) If the power cord is disconnected from the electric outlet,
2) If a power failure occurs, etc.

If any of the above occurs, the memory will have to be reset. If the power supply is interrupted for a week or longer, set the power "STANDBY /ON" switch of the tuner to the "ON" position for an hour or more. Then reprogram the memory.

To Use the Timer

This timer can be used to switch the power ON or to standby at the desired time (within a range of 60 to 10 minutes from the present time). Use this timer to switch the power to standby automatically even if you fall asleep while listening. (Programmed settings are canceled when this timer is used.)

This timer can be used to switch the power ON and to standby at a desired day and time (one day only). This is convenient for recording broadcasts when you are away. (Programmed settings are canceled when this timer is used.)

• Every week on the same day (one day from Sunday to Saturday)
  • Every day (from Sunday to Saturday)
  • Every day except Saturday and Sunday (from Monday to Friday)

The power will be switched ON and to standby at the desired times (among those described above). This feature is convenient for listening to and/or recording the same program every day.

(The programming remains in effect until canceled.)

Timer sequence of priority

If programmed times overlap, timer operation priority is as follows: "SLEEP", "ONCE" and "WEEKLY" settings.

: Timer is functioning. : Timer is not functioning.

In the following example, the "ONCE" and "WEEKLY" settings will not be activated.

Sleep timer operation (SLEEP)

Set only the OFF time of the one-time timer. (Refer to pages 14\~15.)

Press the sleep timer set button or the timer-mode-cancel button. The display will return to indication of the present time.

Notes:

1. If a mistake is made while making the setting, press the timer-mode-cancel button and begin again from step 2.
2. To switch OFF the unit during the timer setting, or while confirming the programmed setting, or to use the tuner to listen to FM, press the timer-mode-cancel button and allow the display to return to the display of the present time (the colon flashes continuously) before doing so.

1. Press the programming-check button so as to display the program mode (1 or 3) at the left) to be canceled.
2. Press the timer-set temporary cancel button. (The timer standby indicator illumination will stop.)

2. Set the timer stand-by switch of the cassette tape deck or compact-disc player to the "PLAY" position.

3. Follow the steps above (1\~8). For step 5, however, follow step ① only.

3. Set the timer stand-by switch on the cassette tape deck to the "REC" position.

4. Check to be sure that the amplifier's "TUNER" input selector has been selected; then switch to standby the tuner's power. Leave the power switch of the amplifier, and of the cassette tape deck, in the ON condition.

Remote-Control Operation

For detailed information concerning operation steps, etc., please refer to the appropriate page for each unit and the respective operation instructions. For this system, you can listen to the tapes or compact discs, etc. by operating the remote-control transmitter without pressing the amplifier's input selector.

Note: The control panel of the remote-control transmitter may be covered by a clear plastic protective sheet. This sheet may be removed if desired.

Troubleshooting Guide

Before requesting service for this unit, check the chart below for a possible cause of the problem you are experiencing. Some simple checks or a minor adjustment on your part may eliminate the problem and restore proper operation.

If you are in doubt about some of the check points, or if the remedies indicated in the chart do not solve the problem, refer to the directory of Authorized service centers (enclosed with this unit) to locate a convenient service center, or consult your Technics dealer for instructions.

While listening to FM broadcasts

An unusual hissing noise is heard when listening to the broadcast in stereo, but not heard when listening monaurally.	A slight noise may be heard because the method used for modulation of FM stereo broadcasts is different than that used for monaural broadcasts.	Try reducing the treble sound by using the treble control of the amplifier.Set the FM mode selector to the monaural position. (Note that the broadcast will then be heard as monaural sound.)Try changing the location, height and/or direction of the antenna.If an indoor antenna is being used, change to an outdoor antenna.Try using an antenna with more elements.
Noise is excessive in both stereo and monaural broadcasts.	Poor location and/or direction of the antenna.
	Transmitting station is too far away.
The FM stereo indicator or the quartz lock indicator flickers, without completely illuminating.	Poor location and/or direction of the antenna. 	Transmitting station is too far away.
Excessive distortion in the sound of stereo broadcasts.	Nearby building or mountain.[Multipath distortion is being caused by the mutual interference of broadcast signals received directly from the transmitting station (direct waves) and signals being reflected from nearby buildings or mountains (reflected waves).]

While listening to AM broadcasts

An unusual "beat" sound is heard.	Unit is being used at the same time as the television set.	Turn off television set, or use this unit farther away from it.
A low-pitched "hum" sound is heard when the broadcast is tuned.	The AM loop antenna connection wires are too close to the power cord.	Place the antenna connection wires and the power cord farther apart.
	The power supply frequency from the power cord is modulated and heard from the speakers.	Install a special outdoor antenna.
A strange hissing noise is produced continuously or intermittent;.	Caused by the "discharge phenomenon" and the "oscillation phenomenon" of electric appliances (such as fluorescent lights, TV, small series-type motors, rectification equipment, etc.).	Try placing this unit farther away from such equipment.Install noise-prevention equipment on this unit or on the electric appliance.

While using the remote-control transmitter

Remote-control transmitter does not function.	Batteries are incorrectly placed.	• Insert the batteries so that the positive (+) and negative (--) polarities are correct.
	The remote-control transmitter batteries are consumed.	• Replace them with new batteries.
	There is an obstruction between the remote-control transmitter and this unit.	• Remove the obstruction.
	The remote-control transmitter is not correctly facing this unit.	• Face the remote-control transmitter correctly toward this unit.

Maintenance

To clean this unit, use a soft, dry cloth.

If the surfaces are extremely dirty, use a soft cloth, dipped into a soap-and-water solution or a weak detergent solution.

Wring the cloth well before wiping the unit.

Wipe once again with a soft, dry cloth.

Never use alcohol, paint thinner, benzine, nor a chemically treated cloth to clean this unit.

Such chemicals may damage the finish of your unit.
