Natural wear of rubber: After several years of use, the material of the insulating sheath loses its flexibility.

How to improve the situation:

Allow the iron to cool completely before storing it.
Wind the cord alternately (change the winding direction each time) to avoid permanent bends.
Store the iron away from direct heat sources.
Avoid bending the cord at sharp angles.
