How to use the SilverCrest SHGD 35D A1?

You have selected a high-quality product. The operating instructions are part of this product. They contain important information about safety, usage and disposal. Before using the product, please familiarise yourself with all operating and safety instructions. Use the product only as described and for the range of applications specified. Please also pass these operating instructions on to any future owner.

Intended use

This hair straightener is intended for straightening human hair only. Under no circumstances is it to be used for wigs or hairpieces made of synthetic material. This appliance is intended exclusively for private use. Pay heed to all of the information in this operating manual, especially the safety instructions. This appliance is not intended for commercial applications.

The appliance is not intended for any other purpose, nor for use beyond the scope described. No claims of any kind will be accepted for damage arising as a result of incorrect use. The risk shall be borne solely by the user.

Safety information

RISK OF ELECTRIC SHOCK

• Connect the appliance only to mains power sockets supplying a mains power voltage of 220 - 240 V \~, 50 Hz.
• Remove the plug from the mains power socket in event of operating malfunctions and before cleaning the appliance.
  ▶ To disconnect the power cable, always pull the plug from the socket; do not pull the power cable itself.
  ▶ Ensure that the power cable does not become wet or damp during use. Route the cable in such a way that it cannot be crushed or damaged.
  ▶ If the appliance, the power cable or the plug are damaged, arrange for them to be repaired by Customer Services to avoid the risk of injury.
  ▶ Do not use the appliance outdoors.
• Do not use extension cables – they will make it difficult to disconnect the appliance quickly in an emergency.
  ▶ Never touch the appliance, the power cable or the power plug with wet hands.
• Do not kink or crush the power cable, and route the cable so that it cannot be stepped on or tripped over.
• Do not wrap the power cable around the appliance, and protect it from being damaged. Under no circumstances should the appliance be submersed in liquids or liquids be allowed to penetrate the housing. Do not expose the appliance to humidity and do not use it outdoors. If any liquid enters the housing, disconnect the appliance from the mains power socket immediately and have it repaired by a qualified technician.

RISK OF ELECTRIC SHOCK

▶ Unplug the appliance immediately after use. The appliance is completely free of electrical power ONLY when unplugged.

Never use the appliance near water, and keep it away from sinks, baths and other similar containers. The proximity of water is hazardous, even if the appliance is switched off. Always disconnect the plug from the mains power socket after use. For additional protection, we recommend you install a residual current circuit-breaker with an activation power rating of no more than 30 mA for the power circuit in the bathroom. Ask your electrician for advice.

▶ Never leave a switched-on appliance unsupervised.
▶ Never place the appliance close to sources of heat, and always protect the power cable from damage.
▶ Do not operate the appliance if it has been dropped or is damaged in any way. Have the appliance checked and/or repaired by qualified technicians if necessary.
This appliance may be used by children of the age of 8 years or more and by persons with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities or lack of experience and/or knowledge ONLY if they are being supervised or have been instructed with regard to the safe use of the appliance and have understood the potential risks.
▶ Children must not play with the appliance.
- Cleaning and user maintenance should not be performed by children unless they are under supervision.

• Do not open the housing or attempt to repair the appliance yourself. This can lead to risks and also invalidates the warranty. Defective appliances should be repaired by authorized specialists only.
  The appliance heats up during use. Always hold the appliance by its grip when it is hot.

Package contents

The appliance is supplied with the following components as standard:

1) Remove all parts of the appliance and the operating instructions from the carton.
2) Remove all packaging material.
3) Clean all parts of the appliance as described in the section entitled "Cleaning".

NOTE

▶ Check the package for completeness and signs of visible damage.
▶ If any items are missing or damaged as a result of defective packaging or transportation, contact the Service Hotline (see chapter "Service").

Disposal of the packaging

The packaging protects the appliance from damage during transport. The packaging materials have been selected for their environmental friendliness and ease of disposal, and are therefore recyclable.

Returning the packaging into the material cycle conserves raw materials and reduces the amount of waste generated. Dispose of packaging materials that are no longer needed in accordance with applicable local regulations.

NOTE

If possible, keep the original packaging during the warranty period so that the appliance can be properly packed for returning in the event of a warranty claim.

Before straightening

■ The hair should be clean, dry and free of styling products. The only exception to this are special products which facilitate hair straightening.
■ Comb the hair thoroughly before straightening so that there are no knots in it.

Automatic switch-off

This appliance is fitted with an automatic switch-off system. After 30 minutes, the appliance will switch itself off automatically. After approx. 25 minutes the indicator lamp ② starts to flash, to remind you it is about to switch off automatically. If you want to continue using the appliance, switch it off for a moment and then back on again.

NOTE

The automatic switch-off is a safety function only and is not intended as a replacement for switching the appliance off properly using the on/off switch 4!

Operation

Switching on/off

NOTE

The hotplates ① must be free of dirt. Clean them before use if required (see section "Cleaning").

The appliance is secured with the catch ⑤.

Press the hotplates ① together and pull the catch ⑤ out.

Now you can open the hair straightener all the way.

1) Insert the plug into a mains power socket.
2) Push the ON/OFF switch ④ forwards into the "1" (ON) position. The indicator light ② starts to flash red and the appliance starts to heat up.
3) Select the temperature suitable for your hair by turning the temperature control ③:
- Turn the temperature control towards MIN to reduce the temperature.
- Turn the temperature control towards MAX to increase the temperature.

NOTE

▶ Select a high temperature for thick and strong hair.
▶ Select a lower temperature for fine and thin hair.
▶ If you are unsure, start with a lower temperature and increase the temperature until you find the ideal temperature for you.

4) As soon as the hair straightener has reached the set temperature, the indicator lamp ② will light up permanently red.

5) When you have finished styling your hair, push the ON/OFF switch ④ backwards into the "0" (OFF) position. The indicator light ② goes out. Pull out the plug and allow the appliance to cool down completely.

Straightening hair

1) Prepare the hair as described in "Before straightening".

2) Start with the lower sections of hair at the back of your head. Work around the sides to the front:

Take a strand with a width of approximately 2 cm and hold its end tightly between your index and middle finger of the hand that is not holding the hair straightener.

WARNING! RISK OF INJURY!

▶ Ensure that the hotplates ① do not touch your scalp. Risk of burns! Never touch the hotplates ① during operation! During operation, touch the appliance only on the handles. Risk of burns!

3) Clamp the strand near the root between the hotplates ① and press them together.

4) Pull the entire strand through the hotplates ① by pulling the hair straightener quickly downwards from the root to the tips.

5) Proceed in the same way for every strand.

6) Once you have straightened all the strands, switch the appliance off and pull the power plug from the mains power socket.

7) Allow the appliance to cool down completely.

Press the hotplates ① together and push the catch ⑤ back in.

Cleaning

RISK OF ELECTRIC SHOCK

▶ Always remove the plug from the mains power socket before cleaning the appliance.
▶ UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you immerse the appliance in water or other liquids during cleaning!

WARNING – RISK OF INJURY!

▶ Allow the appliance to cool sufficiently before cleaning it.

CAUTION - PROPERTY DAMAGE!

▶ Do not use any aggressive cleaning liquids or solvents. They could damage the surface.

1) Wipe the housing and the hotplates ① with a damp cloth.
2) For stubborn soiling use a mild detergent on the cloth. Wipe off any detergent residue using a cloth moistened with clean water only.
3) Allow the appliance to dry fully before using it again.

Storage

■ Place the appliance on a heat-resistant surface to cool down.
■ You can hang the appliance up by the hanger ⑥.

If you do not intend using the appliance for long periods,

■ clean the appliance as described in the section "Cleaning".
■ Store the appliance in a clean and dry location.

Troubleshooting

Problem Cause Solution
The appliance is not working.	The plug is not inserted into a mains power socket.	Plug in the appliance.
	The mains power socket is defective.	Try a different wall socket.
	The appliance is defective.	Contact the Customer Service department.
The hair does not straighten.	The appliance is not yet heated up.	Wait until the appliance has heated up.
	The set heat level is too low.	Select a higher heat level.
The hair is singed.	The hair was between the hot-plates 1 for too long.	Always pull the hair straightener through the hair. Never stay in one place on the hair for any length of time.
	The set heat level is too high.	Select a lower heat level.

Disposal of the appliance

Never dispose of the appliance in your normal domestic waste. This product is subject to the provisions of European Directive 2012/19/EU.

Dispose of the appliance via an approved waste disposal company or your municipal waste disposal facility. Please comply with all applicable regulations. Please contact your waste disposal facility if you are in any doubt.

This appliance has a 3-year warranty valid from the date of purchase. If this product has any faults, you, the buyer, have certain statutory rights. Your statutory rights are not restricted in any way by the warranty described below.

Warranty conditions

The validity period of the warranty starts from the date of purchase. Please keep your original receipt in a safe place. This document will be required as proof of purchase.

If any material or production fault occurs within three years of the date of purchase of the product, we will either repair or replace the product for you at our discretion. This warranty service is dependent on you presenting the defective appliance and the proof of purchase (receipt) and a short written description of the fault and its time of occurrence.

If the defect is covered by the warranty, your product will either be repaired or replaced by us. The repair or replacement of a product does not signify the beginning of a new warranty period.

Warranty period and statutory claims for defects

The warranty period is not prolonged by repairs effected under the warranty. This also applies to replaced and repaired components. Any damage and defects present at the time of purchase must be reported immediately after unpacking. Repairs carried out after expiry of the warranty period shall be subject to a fee.

Scope of the warranty

This appliance has been manufactured in accordance with strict quality guidelines and inspected meticulously prior to delivery.

The warranty covers material faults or production faults. The warranty does not extend to product parts subject to normal wear and tear or fragile parts such as switches, batteries, baking moulds or parts made of glass.

The warranty does not apply if the product has been damaged, improperly used or improperly maintained. The directions in the operating instructions for the product regarding proper use of the product are to be strictly followed. Uses and actions that are discouraged in the operating instructions or which are warned against must be avoided.

This product is intended solely for private use and not for commercial purposes. The warranty shall be deemed void in cases of misuse or improper handling, use of force and modifications / repairs which have not been carried out by one of our authorised Service centres.

Warranty claim procedure

To ensure quick processing of your case, please observe the following instructions:

■ Please have the till receipt and the item number (e.g. IAN 12345) available as proof of purchase.

■ You will find the item number on the type plate, an engraving on the front page of the instructions (bottom left), or as a sticker on the rear or bottom of the appliance.

If functional or other defects occur, please contact the service department listed either by telephone or by e-mail.

■ You can return a defective product to us free of charge to the service address that will be provided to you. Ensure that you enclose the proof of purchase (till receipt) and information about what the defect is and when it occurred.
