Frequently Asked Questions - XTP DTP 24 Punch Down Jack Extron

What tools do I need to terminate an XTP DTP 24 punch down jack?
You need a 110-style punchdown tool (provided), a wire cutter, and an RJ-45 tester.
Which wiring standard does the connector use?
The connector is color-coded for T568B wiring. Refer to the pin numbers and color table on the connector.
How much cable jacket should I strip?
Strip approximately 2 inches (50 mm) of the cable jacket.
What is the maximum exposed conductor length?
The distance between the cable jacket and the connector should not exceed 0.6 inch (15 mm) to avoid crosstalk.
How do I handle the shielding?
Fold the braid over the cable jacket and remove the foil and mylar shielding. Tighten the grounding tie around the braid for proper grounding.
How do I secure the wires after termination?
Place the plastic cover over the termination wires and slide the rear case forward until it clicks into position. This provides strain relief.
Can I re-terminate the connector?
Yes, insert a tweeker (pry tool) on the bottom of the rear case and slide it back to access the wires. Remove wires one at a time due to secure retention.
How do I test the termination?
Use an RJ-45 tester to check conductivity on both ends of the cable.
What is the part number of this connector?
The part number is 68-2370-50 Rev. C (date code 04 13).
Is this connector compatible with standard Cat5e/Cat6 cables?
Yes, it is designed for shielded twisted pair cables used in XTP DTP 24 systems, typically compatible with Cat5e and above.

Follow these instructions to terminate the connector:

  1. Slide the rear case of the connector over the cable. Push the case back at least 3 inches (76 mm) to make room for the termination of the cable.
  2. Remove about 2 inches (50 mm) of the cable jacket.
  3. Fold down the braid over the cable jacket. Remove the foil and mylar shielding (if present).
  4. Note the color codes and pin numbers on the sides of the connector. Follow the color code in the table at right to wire the connector.

  1. Untwist the wire pairs and hold the end of the stripped cable jacket close to the back of the connector. The length of the exposed wires in the connector should not exceed 0.6 inch (see image at right).

ATTENTION: Failure to position the cable properly may result in crosstalk and improper termination.

  1. Position each wire into its respective IDC slot. Insert the wires just far enough to hold them in the IDC slots.

  2. Use the 110-style punchdown tool to push down each wire into the IDC slot. Push the punchdown tool until the wire is firmly secured at the bottom of the slot.

  3. Trim the excess wire flush with the body of the connector.
  4. Tighten the grounding tie around the braid.
  5. Remove the excess braid at the grounding tie.
  6. Place the plastic cover over the termination wires for secure connection and added strain relief.
  7. Push the rear case forward until it clicks into position over the terminated connector.
  8. Test both ends of the cable for conductivity.

NOTE: If there is a need to re-terminate the connector, insert a tweeker on the bottom of the rear case and slide it back to access the wires.

NOTE: The wire retention mechanism in these connectors is very secure. If a terminated cable must be separated from its connector, separate it one wire at a time.
