Frequently Asked Questions - M-8x2 Furman

How to connect and use the Furman M-8x² power strip?
Plug the supplied power cord into a 120 V, 60 Hz outlet protected by a maximum 20 A circuit breaker. Use the front panel toggle switch to turn all outlets on/off. Do not exceed 15 A total and 12 A per outlet.
What to do if the power strip stops providing power?
Check the circuit breaker on the rear panel: press the Reset button to reset it. If the problem persists, check the Protection OK indicator: if it is off, protection is compromised and the unit must be returned for repair.
Can I use the power strip with a UPS or generator?
Yes, but the Merit series does not compensate for voltage fluctuations. In case of frequent drops or spikes, Furman recommends using an additional AC voltage regulator.
What types of devices can I plug in?
Any audio, video, or computer equipment operating at 120 VAC, as long as total current does not exceed 15 A and 12 A per outlet. The power strip filters RFI/EMI noise for better audio/video quality.
How to clean the Furman M-8x² power strip?
Unplug the unit before cleaning. Use a damp cloth (not wet) without solvent or abrasive cleaner. Never pour liquid inside the case.
What is the difference between the M-8x², M-8Lx, and M-8Dx models?
The M-8x² is the basic model. The M-8Lx adds two retractable lamps with dimmer and the M-8Dx additionally includes a digital voltmeter displaying line voltage.
How to operate the retractable lamps on the M-8Lx/M-8Dx?
Pull the light tubes upward, then use the dimmer knob on the front panel to adjust brightness. Push the tubes down when not in use to prolong bulb life.
What to do if the Protection OK indicator is off?
This means the protection circuit has been damaged by an excessive surge. The unit no longer protects your equipment. Contact Furman customer service to obtain an RMA number and have the unit repaired.
Can I use an extension cord with the power strip?
Not recommended, as an extension cord may reduce filtering and protection effectiveness. If necessary, use a good-quality extension cord of at least 14 AWG gauge and as short as possible.
What is the warranty on the Furman M-8x² power strip?
Furman offers a 3-year limited warranty from the date of purchase. Keep your receipt. For claims, contact Furman at 707-763-1010 or email info@furmansound.com.

SAFETY INFORMATION

To obtain best results from your Furman Merit Series unit, please read this manual carefully before using.

Warnings:

To reduce the risk of electrical shock, do not expose this equipment to rain or moisture. Dangerous high voltages are present inside the enclosure. Do not remove the covers. Refer servicing to qualified personnel only.

The lightning flash with an arrowhead symbol is intended to alert the user to the presence of uninsulated dangerous voltage within the product's enclosure that may be of sufficient magnitude to constitute a risk of electric shock.

CAUTION:

This equipment shall be connected to a 20 Amperes rated receptacle of the branch circuit. The total current drawn from the receptacles of this equipment is 15 Amperes maximum, and no individual receptacle shall draw more than 12 Amperes.

Important Safety Guidelines:

(Please read prior to installation)

  1. Please read and observe all safety and operating instructions before installing your Merit Series unit. Retain these instructions for future reference.

  2. Your Merit Series unit should not be used near water – for example, near a bathtub, washbowl, kitchen sink, laundry tub, in a wet basement, near a swimming pool, etc.

  3. Do not place your Merit Series unit near heat sources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves, or other appliances that produce heat.
  4. The Merit Series units should only be connected to a 120 VAC, 60Hz, 15 amp grounded electrical outlet. Do not defeat the ground or change polarization of the power plug.
  5. Route the power cord and other cables so that they are not likely to be walked on, tripped over, or stressed. Pay particular attention to the condition of the cords and cables at the plugs, and the point where they exit your Merit Series unit. To prevent risk of fire or injury, damaged cords and cables should be replaced immediately.
  6. Clean your Merit Series unit with a damp cloth only. Do not use solvents or abrasive cleaners. Never pour liquid on or into the unit.
  7. If any of the following events occur, contact Furman Customer Service immediately at 1-707-763-1010.

Your unit might require service if:

  • The power supply cord or the plug has been frayed, kinked, or cut.
  • Objects have fallen or liquid has spilled into the unit.
  • The unit has been exposed to rain or other moisture.
  • The unit does not appear to operate normally.
  • The unit has been dropped, or the enclosure has been damaged.

  • The retractable lights have failed.
    • Protection OK indicator is not lit.

  • Your Merit Series unit requires that a safety ground be present for proper operation. Any attempt to operate the unit without a safety ground is considered improper operation and could invalidate the warranty.

  • Do not attempt to service your Merit Series unit beyond what is described in this manual. All other servicing should be referred to qualified service personnel.

FEATURES

M-8x²

The M-8x ^2 power conditioner provides 9 switched outlets for powering equipment. It not only protects anything plugged into it from spikes and surges, but also has a built in AC noise filter to rid the system of RFI / EMI interference. This allows equipment to function better and last longer.

M-8Lx

In addition to features of the M-8x ^2 , the M-8Lx features incandescent rack lights and increased AC filtering. A dimmer control for the rack lights allows the user to adjust the level of illumination.

M-8Dx

In addition to all the features of the M-8Lx, the M-8Dx offers a laboratory precision digital meter that displays incoming voltage in 1-volt steps. The voltmeter's accuracy is ±2 volts.

OPERATION

Retractable Rack Lights and Dimmer Control:

The M-8Lx and M-8Dx utilize a dimmer control for the two retractable front panel light tubes. The dimmer knob controls the brightness of both light fixtures. Turn it clockwise to increase brightness; turn it counter-clockwise to decrease brightness. When the lights are not in use, we recommend pushing the fixtures all the way into the chassis (engaging the off switches) to better maximize the life of the bulbs.

On/Off Rocker Switch:

The front panel on/off rocker switches power on and off to all outlets (including the front panel outlet) as well as the retractable lights. This 15 amp capacity power switch is specifically designed to stand up to the enormous high inrush current demands of many power amplifiers.

Circuit Breaker:

If you are not getting any power to the outlets even though the unit is switched on, the circuit breaker might have tripped. To reset the circuit breaker, push the round reset button located on the rear panel.

Protection OK Indicator:

Although Furman's Ground Contamination Free Surge Suppression rarely requires servicing, nature has a way of occasionally creating electrical forces that are beyond the capabilities of any transient voltage surge suppressor device to absorb without some degree of damage. In the instance that this occurs, the “Protection OK” LED indicator will turn off. If this happens, Furman's surge suppression circuit is compromised. The unit must be returned to Furman Sound for repair.

Digital Voltmeter (M-8Dx):

Furman's digital voltmeter continually displays incoming voltage within a typical tolerance of ± 2VAC .

NOTE: The Merit Series units do not compensate for high or low line voltage. If you frequently move your rack to different locations, derive power from generators, use long extension cords, travel internationally, or are in an area prone to brownouts, you may benefit from the use of one of Furman's AC Line Voltage Regulators.
