General information about carbon monoxide (CO)
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colourless, odourless, non-irritant gas classified as a chemical asphyxiant whose toxic effects are a direct consequence of hypoxia induced by a given exposure. CO is rapidly absorbed through the lungs, diffuses across the alveolar capillary membrane and is reversibly bound with haemoglobin as carboxyhaemoglobin (COHb), although a minute amount is present in plasma. The affinity of haemoglobin for CO is more than 200 times higher than its affinity for oxygen. This reduces the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood and affects the dissociation of oxyhaemoglobin, further reducing the oxygen supply to the tissues. CO remains chemically unchanged in the body and is excreted with exhaled air. Excretion is determined by the same factors that apply to absorption. The half-life when breathing room air is 2 h-6.5 h, depending on the initial COHb level.
If the CO content in the inhaled air is constant, the COHb content in the blood approaches a state of equilibrium (saturation) after a few hours. However, the rate at which equilibrium is reached depends on many factors, e.g. lung ventilation rate (physical activity) and alveolar capillary transfer, cardiac parameters, haemoglobin concentration in the blood, atmospheric pressure, oxygen and carbon dioxide concentration in the inhaled air, but the two most important factors determining the COHb level are the CO concentration and the duration of exposure.
The effects of different COHb saturation blood levels on healthy adults are shown in the following table 7.1
BE COOL
Table - Health effects of COHb blood levels in healthy adults
| % COHb | Impact |
| 0.3-0.7 | Normal range in non-smokers due to the body's own CO production. |
| 0.7-2.9 | No proven physiological changes |
| 2.9-4.5 | Cardio-vascular changes in cardiac patients |
| 4-6 | Usual values in smokers, impairment in psychomotor tests. |
| 7-10 | Cardiovascular changes in non-heart patients (increased cardiac output and coronary blood flow) |
| 10-20 | Mild headache, weakness, possible fetal distress. |
| 20-30 | Severe headache, nausea, impairment of limb movements. |
| 30-40 | Severe headache, irritability, confusion, impaired visual acuity, nausea, muscle weakness, dizziness. |
| 40-50 | Cramps and unconsciousness |
| 60-70 | Coma, collapse, death |

The relationship between CO concentration and exposure duration can be calculated for a given \%COHb by parameterising the above factors.

Chronic effects on high-risk groups
Individuals with coronary artery disease exposed to low levels of CO show reduced exercise tolerance, and the time of onset of exercise-induced angina is shortened in such patients exposed to low levels of CO.
Carbon monoxide easily crosses the placental barrier and can endanger the normal development of the foetus.
A number of risk groups are particularly sensitive to the effects of CO due to various organ impairments or specific changes, especially:
BE COOL
• People whose oxygen transport capacity is reduced due to anaemia or other haemoglobin disorders;
• People with increased oxygen requirements, such as in fever, hyperthyroidism or pregnancy;
- Persons with systemic hypoxia due to respiratory insufficiency; d) Persons with heart disease and vascular insufficiency.
WHO guidelines state that to protect non-smoking middle-aged and elderly populations with established or latent coronary heart disease from acute ischaemic heart attacks and to protect the foetuses of non-smoking pregnant women from adverse hypoxic effects, a COHb level of 2.5% should not be exceeded. The following WHO guideline values and time periods for time-weighted average exposures have been established so that the COHb value of 2.5% is not exceeded even if a normal person undertakes light or moderate physical exertion:
100 mg/m³ (90 ppm) for 15 min;
60 mg/m³ (50 ppm) for 30 min;
30 mg/m³ (25 ppm) for 1 h; 10 mg/m³ (10 ppm) for 8 h.
Under normal conditions, humans typically have low COHb concentrations between 0.3 % and 0.7 % in the body. These levels are considered neither beneficial nor harmful.
Tobacco smokers are exposed to significant CO concentrations. In cigarette smokers, the COHb concentration varies between 5% and 9%, while in heavy cigar smokers it can exceed 10%.
WARNING!

Exposure to high concentrations of carbon monoxide can be fatal or cause permanent damage and disability.
BE COOL
WARNING!

The appliance cannot prevent the chronic effects of exposure to carbon monoxide and the appliance does not provide complete protection for persons at particular risk.

Usage
When the unit is first switched on, the POWER indicator (green) flashes every second. This is the preheated state. 60 seconds later, the POWER indicator (green) flashes every 40 seconds to indicate that the unit is working properly. The LCD displays all segments 4s and counts down. When the countdown is "0", the CO medler goes into normal operation.
Normal operation
The POWER indicator (green) flashes once every 40 seconds. The LCD alternately displays the current CO concentration and temperature every 40 seconds. Display range of CO concentration: 0-999 PPM.
If the CO concentration is below 20 ppm, the LCD displays "0 PPM ". When the CO concentration exceeds 999 PPM, the LCD displays "999 PPM ".
Temperature display range: -9 - 50°C. When the CO concentration exceeds 20 PPM, the temperature display function is disabled.

CO alarm
When the unit detects a dangerous CO concentration, the unit emits a loud alarm pattern. The alarm signal pattern consists of 4 beeps followed by 2 seconds of silence. The ALARM indicator (red) flashes at regular intervals. This cycle repeats as long as a dangerous CO condition exists.
Alarm sensitivity setting: (According to EN 50291-1:2018)
30 ppm: no alarm for less than 120 minutes
50 ppm: Alarm at 60 and 90 minutes
100 ppm: Alarm at 10 and 40 minutes
BE COOL
300 ppm: Alarm within 3 minutes
NOTE:
See "What to do when the alarm sounds" when you hear the CO alarm warning sounds.
Muting the CO alarm warning
While the unit is in CO alarm mode, pressing the TEST/SILENCE button will stop the unit's alarm sound for about 10 minutes. The ALARM indicator (red) will continue to flash in CO alarm mode, indicating that the unit is in CO alarm silence mode.
NOTE:
The audible alarm signal will be activated again approximately 10 minutes after pressing the TEST/SILENCE button if the CO concentration in the vicinity of the alarm remains at 50 PPM or more.
NOTE:
The audible alarm signal cannot be silenced if the alarm is triggered at a concentration above 200 PPM.
NOTE:
The alarm muting is activated once during a CO alarm period.
WARNING!

Before activating the CO alarm silencing function, make sure that the alarm is due to dangerous carbon monoxide levels and the home must therefore be ventilated.
BE COOL
Low battery warning
When the unit beeps once every 40 seconds, the FAULT indicator (yellow) flashes. It indicates that the battery is low. The display always shows "
NOTE:
In the event of a low battery warning, the unit can continue to generate a CO alarm signal for at least 4 minutes or warn of low battery for 30 days.
NOTE:
The appliance does not protect against the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning when the battery is empty.

When the unit is in a low battery state and the TEST/SILENCE button is pressed, it will go into a low battery warning mute state for approximately 9 hours, during which time "will appear on the display and the FAULT indicator (yellow) will flash.
NOTE:
Muting the low battery warning is a temporary measure to turn off the warning sound. You must replace the battery as soon as possible.
Error warning
If the unit beeps twice every 40 seconds and the FAULT indicator (yellow) flashes, it indicates that the CO detector is in a malfunction. The display also shows "ERR". Thus your CO detector no longer detects and warns of carbon monoxide.
BE COOL
NOTE:
The sensor may be defective. Therefore, please replace the device immediately.

If the unit is in a fault condition and you press the TEST/SILENCE button, the unit will enter the fault warning mute condition for approximately 9 hours while the display shows " 🔊" and the FAULT indicator (yellow) continues to flash.

What to do when the alarm sounds:
WARNING!

The activation of your CO detector indicates the presence of carbon monoxide (CO), which can be fatal.
- Keep calm and open all doors and windows to improve ventilation. Stop the operation of all fuel-operated appliances and ensure that they are switched off if possible, e.g. in the case of gas appliances by shutting off the emergency valve.
- If the alarm continues to sound, leave the room. Leave the doors and windows open and do not re-enter the building until the alarm has stopped. In apartment buildings and multi-storey buildings, ensure that all occupants are made aware of the danger.
- Get medical help for people suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning. Communicate that carbon monoxide inhalation is suspected.
- Call the competent person responsible for servicing and/or maintaining the appliance on its emergency number so that the source of the carbon monoxide emissions can be identified and rectified. Unless the cause of the alarm is obviously wrong, do not put the gas appliances or fireplaces back into operation until they have been checked and approved for operation by a competent person in accordance with the regulations.
General maintenance:
To keep your CO alarm in good working order, please follow these simple steps:
- Check the operation of the unit's alarm sound and indicators by pressing the TEST/SILENCE button once a week.
