Frequently Asked Questions - HT8750-EUCLA Cotech

What is the maximum power I can draw from this inverter?
The inverter can supply up to 500 W continuous. However, when using the cigarette lighter plug, the maximum load is limited to 100 W. For loads above 100 W, use the battery clips or permanent wiring.
Why is the green LED flashing?
A flashing green LED indicates a fault: low battery voltage, overload, overheating, or a short circuit. Check the troubleshooting chart in the manual and let the device cool down if overheated.
Can I use the inverter with a 24V battery?
No, the HT8750-EUCLA is designed for 12 V systems only. Connecting it to a 24 V battery will destroy the inverter. Use the 24 V model (HT8754-EUCLA) for 24 V systems.
How do I install the inverter permanently?
Use 6 mm² cable if less than 3 m from battery, or 10 mm² for longer runs. Install a 50 A fuse on the positive (+) cable near the battery. Connect red to positive (+), black to negative (-). Ensure proper ventilation.
What appliances can I power with this inverter?
Most 230 V appliances with a power rating up to 500 W. Note that sensitive electronics (e.g., medical devices) or rechargeable products may require a pure sine wave and may not work properly. The inverter produces a modified sine wave.
Can I charge my phone via the USB port?
Yes, the USB port provides 5 V DC, 500 mA for charging small devices like smartphones. It does not support data transfer.
How do I replace the fuse in the cigarette lighter plug?
Unscrew the yellow cap anticlockwise, remove the center pin and spring, take out the old fuse, and insert a new 12 A / 250 V fuse. Reassemble in reverse order.
What does the overload shutdown do?
If the connected load exceeds 500 W (or 100 W via cigarette plug), the inverter will automatically shut down to prevent damage. Reduce the load and restart.
Can I use the inverter in the engine compartment?
No, do not install the inverter in the engine compartment. It should be placed in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, moisture, and flammable materials.
What is the difference between a pure sine wave and modified sine wave?
A pure sine wave is smooth like grid power, while a modified sine wave has a stepped shape. Some devices (e.g., pumps, motors) may run noisily or inefficiently on modified sine wave. For sensitive equipment, use a pure sine wave inverter.

  • The product must only be connected to a 12/24 V cigarette lighter socket (or equivalent) with the centre pin positive (+).
  • The product must be protected from direct sunlight, rain and moisture.
  • Never immerse the product in water.
  • Never open the product. Repair work on the product must only be done by a qualified technician, using genuine spare parts, otherwise there is a risk that the product may cause accident or injury.
    • Always disconnect the battery connections before servicing or adjusting the product.
  • Take great care when using lead-acid accumulators. Avoid causing sparks when connecting the product.
  • Keep the product out of the reach of children. Remember that the output voltage is just as dangerous as the voltage from a standard wall socket.
  • If a cable or connector is damaged it must be replaced. Use only genuine spare parts from the supplier.
  • Never use unnecessarily long cables between the voltage converter and the power source. A long cable causes loss of voltage.
  • Check the polarity of the cigarette lighter socket before connecting the product. The centre pin of the socket must be positive (+).
  • If the product is connected with reversed polarity it may suffer damage. Such damage is not covered by the warranty.
  • Make sure that no devices are connected to the product before plugging it into or unplugging it from the cigarette lighter socket.
  • Check that the voltage converter, cable and connector are undamaged before you use them.
  • Do not cover the product. Make sure that the ventilation openings are clear.

USB port

The USB port does not support data transfer. Its only purpose is to supply power (5 V/500 mA) to products that are powered from a USB port.

Powering a circulation pump etc. with an inverter

An inverter can be used to power a circulation pump provided that the rated power of the inverter is appropriate for the circulation pump. A circulation pump has a very high starting current (it draws more current on starting than the stated current, up to three times as much as in normal operation), so the rated power of the inverter must be twice (or even three times) higher.

The reason why a sine wave inverter is often used for circulation pumps is that such pumps can be noisy if powered from a square wave (or even a modified “staircase” sine wave) supply.

The noise is due to the rapid changes of phase caused by the square (or modified sine) wave. This gives rise to resonances in the pump windings and these may be propagated via copper pipes etc connected to the pump.

An inverter that delivers a square (or modified sine) wave may be accepted in an emergency, but an inverter that delivers a sine wave is preferable for quieter running.

The difference between a square wave, a modified "staircase" sine wave and a pure sine wave:

  1. Unscrew the yellow top of the plug by turning it anticlockwise.
  2. Remove the centre pin and the spring.
  3. Take out the fuse.
  4. Fit a new fuse of the same type and size (12 A/250 V).
  5. Put back the spring and the centre pin.
  6. Refit the yellow top by turning it clockwise.

Care and maintenance

  • In storage, the product must be kept in a well-ventilated location out of the reach of children.
  • When the product is stored or transported in a vehicle, make sure that it is located where it cannot be damaged and where it cannot injure passengers in the event of severe braking or avoidance manoeuvres.
  • Do not expose the product to direct sunlight, intense heat or moisture.
  • If the overheat cutout operates, let the product cool down for at least 15 minutes before starting it up again.
  • When the product is not in use, switch if off and disconnect it from the battery.
  • Before cleaning the product, switch it off and disconnect it from the power source. Wipe the product with a damp cloth.
  • Never use solvents or powerful cleaning agents.

Measuring the alternating voltage

The inverter delivers alternating voltage in the form of a modified square wave. This means that the voltage must be measured with a voltmeter that measures “TRUE RMS” for a correct reading. A different type of voltmeter will give a reading that is 20 to 30 V lower than the actual voltage.
