OBH Blood Pressure Monitor

Before use

OBH NORDICA Blod Pressure Monitor - Before use - 1

Before the blood pressure monitor is taken into use a number of basic steps should be observed. Please read this manual thoroughly before the blood pressure monitor is used for the first time and keep the manual for future use.

The blood pressure monitor is intended for home use only. Any measurement is solely for information and can under no circumstances replace a visit to the doctor. The blood pressure measurements should always be assessed by a qualified person (a doctor, nurse or similar) who is familiar with the user's general medical condition. By regular use and by keeping a record of the results, this person can be kept well informed about developments in the user's blood pressure. Measurements must never be interpreted by the user with the aim of changing levels in the use of medicine as prescribed by a doctor, but the doctor's instructions must be followed AT ALL TIMES.

Use of appropriate cuff size is crucial to correct measurement. Follow the instructions presented in this manual and printed on the cuff to ensure that the correct cuff size is used.

The blood pressure monitor is not suited for users who suffer from arrhythmia (heart rhythm disturbances) and errors may occur in the measurement results if the user has suffered a stroke, suffers from cardiovascular diseases, has a very low blood pressure, is unconscious or suffers from other symptoms such as circulatory diseases (diabetes, kidney diseases, arterial sclerosis (deposits in the arteries), or poor peripheral blood circulation (e.g. in hands and feet).

Electromagnetic disturbances: The device contains sensitive electronic components. Keep it clear of strong electric or electromagnetic fields in the immediate surroundings (e.g. mobile telephones, microwave ovens) as these may temporarily reduce measurement accuracy.

Use the blood pressure monitor only for its original purpose.

The device is intended for measurement of blood pressure and pulse with adult persons (over 18 years of age). Do not apply the monitor to infants nor to persons who cannot express their permission. The device must not be operated by children.

The blood pressure monitor functions in accordance with the oscillometric measurement principle. These blood pressure changes are measured in the cuff on the basis of the arm pulse and are converted into a numerical value of the current blood pressure. Simultaneously, the number of pulse beats are registered and calculated as number of pulse beats per minute.

There are two kinds of discernible blood pressures. Both are expressed in mmHg (millimetres on the mercury column): The systolic and the diastolic. The systolic ('the high blood pressure') states the pressure when the heart chambers contract to send blood through your body, and the systolic ('the low blood pressure') states the pressure when the heart is at ease and filling with blood before the next muscle contraction. The connection between values (mmHg) is expressed as e.g. 130 over 85 which means that the systolic pressure is 130 and the diastolic pressure is 85.

Why is it important to keep an eye on your blood pressure?

Many of today's most common diseases are connected to hypertension, also referred to as 'high blood pressure'. Hypertension is closely connected to cardiovascular diseases, and for people in the danger zone the blood pressure provides an important tool to keep an eye on the development.

Standard for blood pressure

The WHO blood pressure standard defines the areas for high and low blood pressure. Kindly note that the standard is for guidance only as individual blood pressure levels vary from person to person, across age groups, etc.

SymbolWorld Health Organization classificationSYS (mmHg)DIA (mmHg)
Optimal< 120 < 80

OBH NORDICA Blod Pressure Monitor - Standard for blood pressure - 3Hypertension grade 2160-179100-109
Hypertension grade 3≥180≥100

Blood pressure levels and categories for adults

The standard is valid for none medicating persons over 18 years of age who do not suffer from serious short term diseases or other diseases such as diabetes or kidney diseases. If the reading falls inside two groups (e.g. the systolic number within grade 2 and the diastolic number within grade 1), the highest number is used for classification (and the example thus falls within grade 2.) Persons with diabetes or chronic kidney diseases are exceptions to the classifications above as a blood pressure level of just 130/80 mmHg or higher is generally regarded as hypertension.

The blood pressure monitor is equipped with a category indicator for visualization of the presumed risk level of the user in accordance with the standard above. Read more about this in the section 'Risk category indicator'.

It is important to consult your doctor regularly. A doctor will be able to determine the normal blood pressure area for each individual and to determine the exact point at which each individual is considered part of a risk group.

It is recommended that you keep a record of your measurements in order to keep track of developments in your blood pressure.

Blood pressure fluctuates all the time

You should not be worried if you encounter two or three measurements at high levels. Blood pressure changes over the month and even throughout the day. It is also influenced by season and temperature.

line | Time | Systolic pressure (mmHg) | Diastolic pressure (mmHg) | | -------- | ------------------------ | ------------------------- | | 06:00 | ~100 | ~75 | | 12:00 | ~120 | ~85 | | 18:00 | ~160 | ~70 | | 24:00 | ~100 | ~75 |

How to use the blood pressure monitor

This blood pressure monitor is equipped with ‘Smart Sense™’ technology. By pressing a single button the cuff is automatically inflated to block the blood pressure flow through the artery. Subsequently, the deflation process starts. The ‘Smart Sense™’ technology enables automatic inflation and deflation to be adjusted exactly to fit each individual. Please be aware that any motion during inflation or deflation will cause measurement errors. When the measurement is complete the display will show the systolic pressure, the diastolic pressure, and the heart rate.

Smart Sense™ is approved to provide clinically correct results. The device is approved by and in accordance with the demands of MDD (Medical Device Directive, European Norm EN 1060-1, EN 1060-3 och EN 1060-4).

Based on the measurements, the blood pressure monitor's category indicator will warn the user by means of a symbol if the user falls within a risk group. Read more about this in the section ‘Risk category indicator’ and consult the table on page 57.

The blood pressure monitor is also equipped with an identification function for heart arrhythmia (heart rhythm disturbances) which will warn the user that his or her heart has an unstable heartbeat. If the symbol 📁 appears frequently (5 successive measurements or more) it is highly recommended that you consult a doctor. Read more about this in the section ‘Establishing arrhythmia (heart rhythm disturbances)’.

  • Do not move or speak during measurement. Keep your feet flat on the floor.
  • Do not touch the cuff or the blood pressure device during measurement.
  • To obtain the best possible measurement, the blood pressure should be meas approximately the same time every day, and on the same arm.

  • If you are to perform several successive measurements, please wait 5 minutes between each measurement.

  • The measurements are for guidance only. If you have doubts about your blog consult your doctor.
    • The blood pressure device automatically deflates when the pressure exceeds 300 mmHg.
    • The product is not suited for persons suffering from arrhythmia (heart rhythm disturbances).
  • Measurement errors may occur if the user suffers from diabetes, poor blood circulation, kidney problems, or has suffered a stroke.

Risk category indicator

The device complies with the blood pressure standard which classifies blood pressures into 6 grades. This innovative blood pressure classification shows with a symbol on the display the presumed risk category for each measurement. The symbols and the classifications follow the numbers in the table on page 57.

Establishing arrhythmia (heart rhythm disturbances)

An unstable heart rhythm can lead to or indicate cardiovascular diseases. By means of advanced technology, this blood pressure device can warn the user that he or she has an irregular heart rhythm which in turn contributes to better health monitoring.

If the symbol 📁 appears during blood pressure measurement, it means that an irregular heart rhythm has been established. This should only be regarded as a warning. Note that it is important that the user is relaxed, sits still, and does not speak during measurement. It is strongly recommended that you contact your doctor if the irregular heart rhythm symbol appears often.
