How do I change the saw blade on the Narex EPK 16 D?
First, unplug the saw. Using the lever (5), tip up the movable protective guard (7). Use the box-end wrench (16) to hold the spindle, then use the inner hexagon wrench (15) to unscrew the clamping bolt (17) counterclockwise. Remove the outer flange (19) and the old blade. WARNING! Read all safety warnings and all instructions. Failure to follow the warnings and instructions may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury.

Save all warnings and instructions for future reference!

The term "power tool" in the warnings refers to your mains-operated (corded) power tool or battery-operated (cordless) power tool.

1) Work area safety
a) Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.
b) Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes.
c) Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control.
2) Electrical safety
a) Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock.
b) Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces, such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded.
c) Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock.
d) Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock.

3) Personal safety
a) Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury.
b) Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection. Protective equipment such as dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries.
c) Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the off-position before connecting to power source and/or battery pack, picking up or carrying the tool. Carrying

a) DANGER: Keep hands away from cutting area and the blade. Keep your second hand on auxiliary handle, or motor housing. If both hands are holding the saw, they cannot be cut by the blade.

b) Do not reach underneath the workpiece. The guard cannot protect you from the blade below the workpiece.
c) Adjust the cutting depth to the thickness of the workpiece. Less than a full tooth of the blade teeth should be visible below the workpiece.
d) Never hold piece being cut in your hands or across your leg. Secure the workpiece to a stable platform. It is important to support the work properly to minimize body exposure, blade binding, or loss of control.
e) Hold power tool by insulated gripping surfaces when performing an operation where the cutting tool may contact hidden wiring or its own cord. Contact with a „live“ wire will also make exposed metal parts of the power tool „live“ and shock the operator.
f) When ripping always use a rip fence or straight edge guide. This improves the accuracy of cut and reduces the chance of blade binding.

d) Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the power tool on. A wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury.
e) Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations.
f) Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Keep your hair, clothing and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught in moving parts.
g) If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and collection facilities, ensure these are connected and properly used. Use of dust collection can reduce dust-related hazards.
4) Power tool use and care
a) Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed.
b) Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off. Any power tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
c) Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or the battery pack from the power tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally.
d) Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.
e) Maintain power tools. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the power tool's operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools.
f) Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control.
g) Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc. in accordance with these instructions, taking into account the working conditions and the work to be performed. Use of the power tool for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.
5) Service
a) Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained.

g) Always use blades with correct size and shape (diamond versus round) of arbour holes. Blades that do not match the mounting hardware of the saw will run eccentrically, causing loss of control.
h) Never use damaged or incorrect blade washers or bolt. The blade washers and bolt were specially designed for your saw, for optimum performance and safety of operation.

Further safety instructions for all saws

Causes and operator prevention of kickback:

  • kickback is a sudden reaction to a pinched, bound or misaligned saw blade, causing an uncontrolled saw to lift up and out of the work piece toward the operator;
  • when the blade is pinched or bound tightly by the kerf closing down, the blade stalls and the motor reaction drives the unit rapidly back toward the operator;
  • if the blade becomes twisted or misaligned in the cut, the teeth at the back edge of the blade can dig into the top surface of the wood causing the blade to climb out of the kerf and jump back toward the operator.
    Kickback is the result of saw misuse and/or incorrect operating procedures or conditions and can be avoided by taking proper precautions as given below.

a) Maintain a firm grip with both hands on the saw and position your arms to resist kickback forces. Position your body to either side of the blade, but not in line with the blade. Kickback could cause the saw to jump backwards, but kickback forces can be controlled by the operator, if proper precautions are taken.
b) When blade is binding, or when interrupting a cut for any reason, release the trigger and hold the saw motionless in the material until the blade comes to a complete stop. Never attempt to remove the saw from the work or pull the saw backward while the blade is in motion or kickback may occur. Investigate and take corrective actions to eliminate the cause of blade binding.
c) When restarting a saw in the workpiece, centre the saw blade in the kerf and check that saw teeth are not engaged into the material. If saw blade is binding, it may walk up or kickback from the workpiece as the saw is restarted.
d) Support large panels to minimise the risk of blade pinching and kickback. Large panels tend to sag under their own weight. Supports must be placed under the panel on both sides, near the line of cut and near the edge of the panel.
e) Do not use dull or damaged blades. Unsharpened or improperly set blades produce narrow kerf causing excessive friction, blade binding and kickback.
f) Blade depth and bevel adjusting locking levers must be tight and secure before making cut. If blade adjustment shifts while cutting, it may cause binding and kickback.
g) Use extra caution when making a „plunge cut“ into existing walls or other blind areas. The protruding blade may cut objects that can cause kickback.

Safety instructions for saws with lower guard

a) Check lower guard for proper closing before each use. Do not operate the saw if lower guard does not move freely and close instantly. Never clamp or tie the lower guard into the open position. If saw is accidentally dropped, lower guard may be bent. Raise the tower guard with the retracting handle and make sure it moves freely and does not touch the blade or any other part, in all angles and depths of cut.
b) Check the operation of the lower guard spring. If the guard and the spring are not operating properly, they must be serviced before use. Lower guard may operate sluggishly due to damaged parts, gummy deposits, or a build-up of debris.
c) Lower guard may be retracted manually only for special cuts such as "plunge cuts" and "compound cuts." Raise lower guard by retracting handle and as soon as blade enters the material, the lower guard must be released. For all other sawing, the lower guard should operate automatically.
d) Always observe that the lower guard is covering the blade before placing saw down on bench or floor. An unprotected, coasting blade will cause the saw to walk backwards, cutting whatever is in its path. Be aware of the time it takes for the blade to stop after switch is released.

Additional safety instructions for all saws with riving knife

a) Use the appropriate riving knife for the blade being used. For the riving knife to work, it must be thicker than the body of the blade but thinner than the tooth set of the blade.
b) Adjust the riving knife as described in this instruction manual. Incorrect spacing, positioning and alignment can make the riving knife ineffective in preventing kickback.
c) Always use the riving knife except when plunge cutting. Riving knife must be replaced after plunge cutting. Riving knife causes interference during plunge cutting and can create kickback.
d) For the riving knife to work, it must be engaged in the workpiece. The riving knife is ineffective in preventing kickback during short cuts.
e) Do not operate the saw if riving knife is bent. Even a light interference can slow the closing rate of a guard.

Double insulation

To ensure maximum safety of the user, our tools are designed and built to satisfy applicable European standards (EN standards). Tools with double insulation are marked by the international symbol of a double square. These tools must not be grounded and a two-wire cable is sufficient to supply them with power. Tools are shielded in accordance with EN 55014.

Use

With the help of a solid support, the machine is designed for longitudinal and lateral straight cuts and cuts with bevel angles to 45^ in timber. The user himself is liable for any improper use.

Putting into operation and control

Check whether the type of plug conforms to the type of the socket. Check whether the data on the rating plate match with the real power supply voltage. The tool intended for 230 V may be also connected to 220/240 V.

Switching on:

Press the locking button (1).

Press the switch (2) and hold it down.

Notice: The switch cannot be locked.

Switching off:

Release the switch.

Clamping the circular-saw blade

The cutting power and the quality of cut depend strongly on the condition and shape of the teeth. Use therefore only sharp circular-saw blades that are suitable for the respective worked material.

Engage a cleaned circular-saw blade, as shown on the picture, and screw down firmly. During this operation make sure the position of the bottom bearing flange (21) and the clamping flange (19) is correct.

When fitting the circular-saw blade on make sure the orientation of the teeth corresponded with the turning direction of the spindle (the arrow on the protective guard). Check the moving cover for correct function.

Exchange of the circular-saw blade

Using the lever (5), tip the movable cover (7) up and put on the box-end wrench (16).

Using the inner hexagon wrench (15), screw the clamping bolt (17) out of the spindle (23).

Pull off the clamping flange (19) and the circular-saw blade (20).

Cutting depth adjustment

Loosen the hand screw (12).

Using the scale (13) adjust the cutting depth to the required dimension. The bottom margin of the protective cover serves as a support point.

Erection: smaller cutting depth

Activation: bigger cutting depth

Re-tighten the hand screw. The cutting depth is adjusted correctly if the circular-saw blade does not stick out of the bottom side of the workpiece by more than 3 mm.

Cutting angle adjustment

Loosen the hand screw (9).

Using the scale adjust the cutting angle to the required value (the angle scale is divided by 1^ ).

Re-tighten the hand screw (9).

The cutting depth of chamfer cuts is smaller than the given value on the cutting depth scale.

Guide

The guide gib (14) provided with a scale is pushed into the hole in the crosshead (6) and secured with a hand screw (10). The guide allows parallel cuts along the straight edge, and slicing of dimensionally identical bands. The maximum adjustable width per cut is approx. 200 mm.

Dust exhaust

This opening (3) serves for connection of commonly available vacuum cleaners to the circular saw.

Spacer scotch adjustment

The spacer scotch (22) prevents the circular-saw blade from gripping in long cuts. It always has to be fitted in order to ensure safety.

Loosen the bolt (4), adjust the spacer scotch and re-tighten the bolt. Then check the function of the movable protective cover (7).

Work instructions

Fix the workpiece onto a solid base.

Excessive movement reduces the performance of the tool significantly, and shortens the service life of the circular-saw blade and the engine. Use sharpened circular-saw blades that are suitable for the respective material. A tiny layer of oil on the saw blade prevents it from corrosion.

Clean the circular-saw blade straight after work, since the residues of glue and resin deteriorate the quality of the cut.

Cutting of plastics

During cutting plastics, long spiral chippings originate. Electrostatic charge effect might cause clogging of the hole for outlet of chippings (3) and blocking the swiveling cover.

Plastic workpieces must adjoin well to the base. Incise carefully and work fluently, without interruptions. Like this the saw teeth will not stick up and the section will be smooth.

Maintenance

☐ When replacing the circular-saw blade, make sure to clear the inside of the cover off accumulated wood dust.
☐ The vents of the engine guard must not get clogged.
☐ The cable can only be replaced in an authorized electrotechnical workshop which has the licence to carry out this type of work.

After about 200 hours of operation, the following works have to be done:

☐ The length of the brushes must be checked. Brushes shorter than 5 mm have to be replaced with new ones.
Exchange of lubricant grease in the gearbox and in bearings.

To maintain the protection class, the saw has to be checked in terms of safety, and therefore these works have to be carried out in a specialized electrotechnical workshop which is authorized for this type of work.

Storage

Packed appliance may be stored in dry, unheated storage place with temperature not lower than -5^ C.

Unpacked appliance should be stored only in dry storage place with temperature not lower than +5°C with exclusion of all sudden temperature changes.

Environmental protection

Power tools, accessories and packaging should be sorted for environmental-friendly recycling.

Only for EU countries:

Do not dispose of power tools into household waste!

According to the European Directive 2002/96/EC on waste electrical and electronic equipment and its incorporation into national law, power tools that are no longer suitable for must be separately collected and sent for recovery in an environmental-friendly manner.

Warranty

Our equipment is under warranty for at least 12 months with regard to material or production faults in accordance with national legislation. In the EU countries, the warranty period for exclusively private use is 24 months (an invoice or delivery note is required as proof of purchase).

Damage resulting from, in particular, normal wear and tear, overloading, improper handling, or caused by the user or other damage caused by not following the operating instructions, or any fault acknowledged at the time of purchase, is not covered by the warranty.

Complaints will only be acknowledged if the equipment has not been dismantled before being sent back to the suppliers or to an authorised NA-REX customer support workshop. Store the operating instructions, safety notes, spare parts list and proof of purchase in a safe place. In addition, the manufacturer's current warranty conditions apply.

Measured values were obtained according to EN 60745.
