How to connect the sE7 sideFire microphone?

Use a balanced XLR cable to connect the microphone to an audio interface or mixing console. Make sure phantom power 48V is turned on.

What type of power supply is required?

The microphone requires 48V phantom power compliant with IEC 61938. It is usually provided by preamps, audio interfaces, or mixing consoles.

How to use the low-cut filter?

The low-cut filter switch is located on the front. Activate it to cut frequencies below 80 Hz (6 dB/octave) and reduce wind noise, plosives, or proximity effect.

How to use the attenuation (-20 dB)?

The attenuation switch is located on the back. Activate it to reduce the input level by 20 dB when recording very loud sources (drums, amplifiers) to avoid distortion.

Is the sE7 sideFire suitable for recording drums?

Yes, thanks to its high SPL handling (136/156 dB) and switchable attenuation, it can capture powerful sources like drums or brass without distortion.

Can I use this microphone with any audio interface?

Yes, provided the interface provides 48V phantom power and has an XLR input. The recommended load impedance is greater than 1 kOhm.

What to do if the microphone produces unwanted noise?

Check that the low-cut filter is activated if necessary. Make sure the phantom power is stable and the cables are of good quality. Avoid sources of vibrations.

How to clean the microphone?

Use a dry, soft cloth. Never use liquids or abrasive products. The foam windscreen can be gently hand washed with lukewarm water and mild soap.

Brief description

The sE7 / sE7 sideFire is a high-quality back-electret small diaphragm condenser microphone intended for a wide range of studio and live sound applications, from acoustic guitars to pianos to drums and beyond. With an optimized acoustic design, discrete class-A circuitry and a transformerless output, it delivers clear, natural sound quality at all frequencies, without suffering from fizzy highs or a lack of low-frequency punch.

The discrete electronics and the switchable attenuation pad ensure a high dynamic range, with high sound pressure level (SPL) handling capability and extremely low-noise components. The switchable low-cut filter helps eliminate rumble or footfall noise, and can also compensate for an excess of bass frequencies caused by the proximity effect. This enables the sE7 / sE7 sideFire to close-mic many instruments including electric guitar speaker cabinets, brass instruments and drums.

Reliable operation even in demanding on-stage applications in difficult environments is ensured by the roadworthy all-metal design, robust construction, and high-quality manufacturing standards.

Controls

The sE7 / sE7 sideFire features a switch for the attenuation pad and a switch for the low-cut filter.

Attenuation Switch

The Attenuation Switch is located on the upper rear side of the microphone. When switched on, the incoming signal is reduced by 20 dB for the capture of loud instruments and/or close-miking without distortion. Using the switch also helps prevent overloading the input stage of recording interfaces, mixing desks and microphone preamps.

Low-Cut Switch

The Low-Cut Switch is located on the lower rear side of the microphone and inserts a low-cut filter at 80Hz. The switch's top position removes the filter for a flat frequency response. Wind noise, plosives, footfall noise or rumble might affect the recorded signal, so enabling the low-cut filter reduces such unwanted noise and prevents distortion. Additionally, the low-cut filter also minimizes the proximity effect when recording sound sources at a very short distance.

Frequency Response Polar Pattern

Powering

To ensure proper operation, your sE product requires a Phantom power source that provides 48 Volts according to IEC 61938.

Risk of damage

Do not connect your sE product to any power supply other than a Phantom power source (input with Phantom power or external IEC standard Phantom power supply) with a floating connector, using a balanced cable with studio-grade connectors to IEC 268-12 only. This is the only way to ensure safe and reliable operation.

Please be aware that Phantom power cannot pass through TRS connectors. A balanced microphone cable with XLR connectors at both sides is required to provide Phantom power to your sE product.
