How to assemble the Kenmore DU1099 vacuum?

Insert the handle into the tube until it clicks, then the tube into the main body. Install the accessory holder and the hose storage clip. Insert the flexible hose into the main body and the lower connection. Wrap the cord loosely around the cord hooks.

How to empty the dustbin?

Press the dustbin release button to remove it. Open the lid over a trash can by pressing the release button. Shake the dustbin and reinstall it by snapping it back in place.

How to clean the vacuum filters?

Remove the foam and felt filters. Wash them in cold water only, without detergent. Squeeze by hand and air dry for 24 hours before reinstalling.

How to replace the roller brush belt?

Unplug the vacuum. Remove the six screws from the belt cover and bottom plate. Remove the worn belt and clean debris. Loop the new belt around the motor shaft and roller brush, then reinstall the plate and cover.

What to do if the vacuum loses suction?

Check that the dustbin is not full, filters are clean, suction control is closed, and there is no blockage in the hose or accessories.

How to use the 3-in-1 multi-purpose tool?

Attach it to the hose or tube. Use it in crevice tool mode for tight spaces, dusting brush mode for curtains, and furniture brush mode for fabrics. To change mode, press the release button and slide the brush.

How to adjust brush height for different floor types?

Turn the height adjustment knob on the floor nozzle. Settings are: Low for bare floors, Med Low for short pile carpets, Med High for medium pile carpets, High for thick rugs.

The vacuum does not start, what to do?

• Disconnect electrical supply before servicing or cleaning out the brushroll area. Failure to do so could result in the brushroll unexpectedly starting, causing personal injury from moving parts.
• Do not leave vacuum cleaner when plugged in. Unplug from outlet when not in use and before performing maintenance.

- To reduce the risk of electrical shock - Do not use outdoors or on wet surfaces.

- Do not allow to be used as a toy. Close attention is necessary when used by or near children.

ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS

Before assembling the vacuum cleaner, check the PACKING LIST (page 2). Use this list to verify that you have received all the components of your new Kenmore Bagless Upright Vacuum Cleaner.

1. Insert the handle into the wand until you hear a 'click'.

1. Align the attachment holder clip with the front of the wand as shown. Make sure the oval hole aligns with the corresponding protrusion on the wand. Push and snap into place on wand.

ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS

1. Insert one end of the flexible hose into the main body as shown until you hear a 'click'. Then run the flexible hose over the hose storage. Insert the other end of the hose into the lower hose connection as shown until you hear a 'click'.

1. Store the extension wand under the hose storage as shown. Make sure the smaller end of the extension wand is upward. Push and snap into place.

1. Insert the combination tool onto the accessory storage post located on the back of the main body. The Pet HandiMate® is stored in the attachment holder on the wand.

1. Make sure the upper cord hook is in the proper position as shown. Wrap the power cord loosely around the upper and lower cord hooks.

NOTE: Make sure to wrap the power cord around the upper cord hook first, and then around the lower cord hook to avoid damaging the power cord.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

CAUTION

Moving parts! To reduce the risk of personal injury, DO NOT touch the brushroll when vacuum is on. Contacting the brushroll while it is rotating can cut, bruise or cause other injuries. Disconnect electrical supply before servicing or cleaning the vacuum cleaner. Use caution when operating near children or pets.

POWER CORD – RELEASE & USE

1. Turn the upper cord hook to either side and down to release the power cord.

WARNING

To reduce the risk of electric shock, this appliance has a polarized plug (one blade is wider than the other). This plug will fit in a polarized outlet only one way. If the plug does not fit fully in the outlet, reverse the plug. If it still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician to install the proper outlet. Do not change the plug in any way.

POWER CORD - RELEASE & USE

1. Detach the power cord plug from the power cord.
2. Be sure the power cord is locked into the lower locking notch and the upper locking notch as shown. This will help manage the power cord when operating the vacuum cleaner.

NOTE: Lock the power cord into the lower locking notch first and then lock it into the upper locking notch to avoid damaging the power cord.

Make sure the power cord can move freely and is not over-extended when locking it into the lower locking notch.

1. Plug the power cord plug into an outlet located near the floor.

• When any abnormality/failure occurs, stop using the product immediately and disconnect the power plug.

• DO NOT use outlets above counters. Damage from cord to items in surrounding area could occur.

• Press the power button with your foot to turn the vacuum cleaner on.

• Once you have completed vacuuming, press the power button again; unplug the power cord plug from the outlet.
• To store power cord after use, turn upper cord hook to the upright position. Then wrap cord loosely around cord hooks.

UPRIGHT MODE

NOTE: Make sure the vacuum cleaner is completely assembled and the dust cup is empty before using. Do not operate vacuum cleaner without filters in place.

1. Release the handle by placing a foot on the floor nozzle and pulling back to change handle position.

1. Turn on the vacuum cleaner by pressing the power button with your foot.

1. Once the vacuum is on, operate the vacuum cleaner by tilting the handle back towards you and the nozzle is flush with floor surface.

2. Once you have completed vacuuming, press the power button again. Return the handle to the fully upright position by pushing the handle forward until the vacuum body is locked down in place. Unplug the power cord from the power outlet.

PILE HEIGHT SELECTION AND SETTINGS

Select a pile height setting by turning the height adjust selector located on the floor nozzle.

Suggested Pile Height Settings

There are four (4) pile height settings on the vacuum cleaner. For best deep down cleaning of low pile carpet, use the MED LOW setting. However, you may need to raise the height to make some jobs easier, such as scatter rugs and some deep pile carpets.

Suggested settings are:

LOW - Bare floor

MED LOW – Low pile carpet

MED HIGH – Medium to deep pile

HIGH – Shag, deep pile, or scatter rugs

OPERATION MODES

CAUTION

Incorrect setting may damage floor.

CAUTION

Do not allow the vacuum cleaner to remain in one spot for any length of time when the brushroll is turning. Damage to carpet may occur.

ABOVE FLOOR MODE

NOTE: Brushroll continues to rotate when using the vacuum in the above floor mode. DO NOT place the vacuum on the deep pile carpet to avoid damage to carpet.

1. Place the vacuum cleaner in the upright locked position.
2. Press the hose release button and release the flexible hose for above floor cleaning.

1. Choose the desired extension wand/attachment and insert it into the flexible hose.

1. Turn on the vacuum cleaner by pressing the power button with your foot.
2. Once you have completed vacuuming, press the power button again and unplug the power cord from the power outlet.

NOTE: The attachment also can insert directly into the flexible hose for above floor cleaning.

OPERATION MODES

CAUTION

When using attachments, be careful not to over extend the flexible hose when reaching. Trying to reach beyond the hose stretch capability could cause the vacuum cleaner to tip over.

DO NOT pull the vacuum cleaner around the room by the hose. Property damage or personal injury could result.

ATTACHMENTS

3-IN-1 COMBINATION TOOL

The 3-in-1 combination tool can be attached to the end of the flexible hose and the extension wand. Slide the collar of the tool over the open end of the hose or the extension wand.

Use the 3-in-1 combination tool in crevice tool mode for cleaning in tight spaces such as furniture, between cushions, and stairs. See ATTACHMENT USE TABLE (page 15).

Set the combination tool in dusting brush mode by pressing the release button and sliding the dusting brush side of the brush tool to the end of the combination tool. Use in dusting brush mode for cleaning loose surfaces such as drapes. See ATTACHMENT USE TABLE (page 15).

Press the release button to remove the brush tool. Set the combination tool in upholstery brush mode as shown. Use in upholstery brush mode for cleaning fabric surfaces such as fabric sofa. See ATTACHMENT USE TABLE (page 15).

To return the combination tool to crevice tool mode, press the release button and slide the brush tool down the combination tool.

PERFORMANCE/SAFETY FEATURES

BY-PASS VALVE

This vacuum cleaner has a By-Pass Valve which prevents the motor from overheating and damage. The valve opens to provide cooling air when a clog prevents normal air flow to the vacuum cleaner suction motor. You will notice a change of sound as air rushes through the valve opening.

To correct the problem: remove any clogs, check and replace filters if needed, check and empty dust cup if needed.

NOTE: The By-Pass Valve may open when using attachments or when cleaning new carpet due to reduced airflow or air path is blocked, caused by the attachments themselves or by new carpet lint filling the dust cup quickly.

HAIR ELIMINATOR™ BRUSHROLL

For best performance, the floor nozzle is equipped with a hair eliminator™ brushroll, which prevents build-up of hair, string and other debris on the brushroll. To remove any hair wrapped around the brushroll, simply continue vacuuming, allowing the brushroll to automatically remove the hair wrap and send it to the dust cup.

Comb Teeth

NOTE: Always keep the brushroll free of carpet fiber, string, or hair build-up to maintain a longer life of the brushroll belt. If for some reason the brushroll does become entangled by any string or hair, stop using the vacuum and clean the brushroll immediately.

CAUTION

Moving parts! To reduce the risk of personal injury, DO NOT touch the brushroll when vacuum is on. Contacting the brushroll while it is rotating can cut, bruise or cause other injuries.

SUCTION CONTROL

To assist with push/pull force of the vacuum on surfaces like thick carpet, the suction control valve can be opened to help reduce suction. Note that for best cleaning results, the suction control valve must be fully closed.

• Slide to right to open the suction control and decrease suction. Opening control decreases suction for draperies and lightweight rugs.
• Slide to left to close the suction control and increase suction. Closing control increases suction for upholstery and carpets.

VACUUM MAINTENANCE AND CARE

Always follow all safety precautions when performing maintenance to the vacuum cleaner.

Disconnect electrical supply before servicing or cleaning the vacuum cleaner. Failure to do so could result in electrical shock or personal injury from vacuum cleaner suddenly starting.

The floor nozzle is equipped with sharp comb teeth inside. DO NOT touch comb teeth when servicing or cleaning the vacuum, which may cause personal injury.

CLEANING EXTERIOR AND ATTACHMENTS

1. Turn off and unplug vacuum cleaner. DO NOT drip water on vacuum cleaner.
2. To clean exterior, or to reduce static electricity and dust build-up, wipe outer surface with a clean, soft cloth that has been dipped in a solution of mild liquid detergent and water, then wrung dry. Wipe dry after cleaning.

NOTE: Wash attachments in warm soapy water, rinse and air dry. Do not clean in dishwasher.

CAUTION

Do not use attachments if they are wet. Attachments used in dirty areas, such as under a refrigerator, should not be used on other surfaces until they are washed. They could leave marks.

1. Place attachments in storage position if necessary (see page 9).
2. Gather the cord and wrap it loosely around the upper and lower cord hooks. Lock plug retainer onto the power cord.
3. Store the vacuum cleaner in a dry, indoor area, on the floor with the handle locked in the upright position.

Always unplug power cord from electrical outlet before performing any service on vacuum cleaner.

NOTE: For best performance, empty dust cup after every use. Never operate vacuum cleaner without dust cup and filters in place.

1. Press the dust cup release button to remove the dust cup from the main body.

1. Remove any clogs that might be located in the suction port.

1. Position dust cup area of vacuum over a waste receptacle. Press down on the dust release button to open dust cup lid and allow contents to drop into waste receptacle.

1. Shake the dust cup to release any debris that might hang in the pre-filter.

2. Reinstall and insert the dust cup into the slots on the bottom of the main body, then press the dust cup into locked slot and click into place.

PRE-FILTER CLEANING

The pre-filter is located inside the dust cup. Clean the pre-filter as needed to optimize suction power.

1. Remove the dust cup as outlined in the EMPTYING DUST CUP (page 18).

NOTE: Make sure dust cup is free of debris before opening.

1. Clean pre-filter by gently tapping over a trash container. Tap on several sides to ensure best cleaning.

1. Reinstall the dust cup into the main body. See installation instructions in the EMPTYING DUST CUP (page 18).

FOAM AND FELT FILTERS CLEANING

It is recommended to clean the foam and felt filters with cold water every three months.

NOTE: When the cleaning of filters no longer restores vacuum cleaner suction to full power, or the filters are worn or broken, replace the filters. To purchase filters, call 1-877-531-7321 (US) / 1-844-608-3081 (CA).

Regularly clean and replace the filters to keep the vacuum's suction power optimal.

1. Remove the dust cup as outlined in the EMPTYING DUST CUP (page 18).

2. Remove the foam and felt filters.

1. Wash with cold water only. DO NOT use detergent or soap. Squeeze by hand and allow to air dry. Allow all filters to dry 24 hours before putting back into vacuum cleaner.

NOTE: DO NOT operate without foam and felt filters installed.

DO NOT install foam and felt filters if damp.

WARNING

Always unplug power cord from electrical outlet before performing maintenance to the vacuum cleaner.

Replace belt whenever a burning rubber smell caused by excessive slippage occurs.

NOTE: Make sure that the pile height setting is on the LOW setting.

1. Lay the vacuum cleaner on floor with the bottom up and the floor nozzle flat.

2. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the six screws from the belt cover and the lower plate.

1. Remove the belt cover from the floor nozzle.

1. Lift the lower plate combined with the brushroll.

CAUTION

Motor shaft may be hot.

WARNING

There are sharp edges inside to prevent hair entanglement. Do not put any part of the body into the floor brush during maintenance.

1. Remove the worn or broken belt.
2. Clean any debris from the floor nozzle.
3. Loop the new belt around the motor shaft and the belt path on the brushroll.

NOTE: Before reinstalling the lower plate, make sure the belt is in the middle of the belt path as shown.

1. Reinstall the lower plate with the brushroll back into the floor nozzle. First align the two locking tabs on the lower plate with the slots in the nozzle as shown. Then rotate the lower plate down onto the brushroll housing. Press on the middle part of the lower plate until you hear a "click". Rotate the brushroll to make sure the belt is installed correctly.

NOTE: Check to make sure the small wheel bracket is properly fixed by the lower plate and cannot be lifted off.

1. Reinstall the belt cover into place.

1. Reinstall six screws into the lower plate and the belt cover. Do not over-tighten the screws.

PET HANDIMATE® CLEANING

WARNING

Always unplug the power cord from an electrical outlet before performing maintenance to the vacuum cleaner.

CAUTION

To reduce the risk of injury from moving parts, remove Pet HandiMate® from vacuum hose or wand before servicing.

Cut off any carpet pile and lint entangled around brushroll with a pair of scissors.

REMOVING CLOGS

WARNING

Disconnect electrical supply before removing clogs. Failure to do so could result in electrical shock or personal injury.

CHECKING FLEXIBLE HOSE FOR CLOGS

If there is noticeable abnormal noise when using the vacuum or the suction power suddenly drops, it is necessary to check the flexible hose for clogs.

Frequently check air path to make sure it is free of obstructions.

1. Remove attachments from the end of the flexible hose.
2. Remove the flexible hose ends from the main body and the lower hose connection by pressing the hose release buttons.

1. Check and remove any clogs in the flexible hose.

2. Reinstall the flexible hose to the vacuum cleaner. See ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS (page 9).

CHECKING CONNECTION HOSE FOR CLOGS

1. Check and remove any clogs in the connection hose.
2. If necessary, release the connection hose by removing one screw with a Phillips head screwdriver and check for clogs.

1. Reinstall the collection hose and fix with the screw. Do not over-tighten the screw.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Review this table to find do-it-yourself solutions for minor performance problems. Any service needed, other than maintenance described in this Use & Care Guide, should be performed by a qualified service agent.

WARNING

PROBLEM POSSIBLE CAUSE SOLUTION
Vacuum cleaner will mot run.	Unplugged at wall outlet. Plug in firmly.
	The power button is not pressed to start the vacuum cleaner.	Press the power button to start the vacuum cleaner.
	Defective wall outlet.	Check with a good appliance or lamp. Be sure the power cord plug is fully plugged into a good wall outlet.
	The motor is damaged.	Call 1-877-531-7321 (US) / 1-844-608-3081 (CA) for assistance.
Poor job of dirt pick-up.	The hose or attachments are not installed correctly.	Check the hose and attachments for correct installation and ensure they are snapped firmly in place.
	Dust cup is not installed correctly.	Check dust cup for correct installation and ensure it is snapped firmly in place.
	Full or clogged dust cup.	Empty the dust cup (page 18).
	There is a clog in the flexible hose or connection hose of the vacuum cleaner.	Check and remove all clogs. Follow instructions on page 24.
	Suction control is in open position.	Adjust the suction control to increase suction. Follow instructions on page 16.
	The foam filter or felt filter needs to be cleaned or replaced.	Clean or replace the foam filter or felt filter. Follow the foam filter and felt filter cleaning instructions on page 19-20.
	The flexible hose is worn.	Replace the hose assembly. To purchase parts, call 1-877-531-7321 (US) / 1-844-608-3081 (CA).
	The connection hose is worn.	Call 1-877-531-7321 (US) / 1-844-608-3081 (CA) for assistance.
	The brushroll is worn.	Call 1-877-531-7321 (US) / 1-844-608-3081 (CA) for assistance.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Dust escapes from the vacuum.	Dust cup is not installed correctly.	Position dust cup correctly and snap firmly in place.
	Foam filter or felt filter is worn or broken.	Check and replace the foam filter or felt filter. To purchase parts, call 1-877-531-7321 (US) / 1-844-608-3081 (CA).
Brushroll does not turn.	Brushroll is jammed.	Call 1-877-531-7321 (US) / 1-844-608-3081 (CA) for assistance.
	Brushroll is not installed correctly.	Call 1-877-531-7321 (US) / 1-844-608-3081 (CA) for assistance.
	The belt is not routed correctly. Check the belt routing on page 20-23.
	The belt is worn or broken.	Replace the belt. To purchase parts, call 1-877-531-7321 (US) / 1-844-608-3081 (CA).
Airflow restricted with attachments in use; sound changes.	Air path is blocked.	Check for and remove any clogs and clean the air path. Follow instructions on page 24.
	Attachments in use restrict air flow.	Check attachments for fuzz, lint, pet hair or other debris.
Vacuum turns off on its own.	The power cord plug is loose from the outlet when using the vacuum.	Reinsert the power cord plug fully into the outlet. Avoid pulling or dragging the power cord when using the vacuum.
	The motor is damaged.	Call 1-877-531-7321 (US) / 1-844-608-3081 (CA) for assistance.
