Frequently Asked Questions - 2214 Klein Tools

How to assemble the Hydra-Cool™ protector pads to the climbers?
Insert the top spur of the climber with the sleeve into the tunnel loop of the pad. Push until the metal retainer bar aligns with the sleeve loop, then pass the Klein Kord® retainer strap through the loop and secure the Velcro®.
How to properly put on the pad and climber on the leg?
Place your foot into the assembly, tighten the ankle straps, then wrap the free end of the pad into the metal locking buckle. Pull until the minimum overlap warning tag passes through the buckle, then secure the Velcro®.
What is the maximum recommended weight for using this equipment?
Klein Tools recommends a total combined weight (body, clothing and tools) of 300 lb (136 kg) or less when using its climbers and pads.
How to maintain the protector pads?
Clean the straps with a damp cloth and mild detergent. For Velcro® components, use a stiff brush to remove debris. Condition the leather with neatsfoot oil. Air dry, do not use heat.
What to do if the Velcro® no longer adheres properly?
Clean the rough Velcro® strips with a stiff brush. If adhesion is still insufficient, the pad must be removed from service and replaced.
How to inspect the pads before each use?
Check for tears, burns, damaged stitching, excessive wear on leather. Check rivets, buckles and metal inserts (cracks, deformations). Ensure the retainer strap is intact.
Can I use this equipment with other brands of climbers?
The pads are designed for Klein Tools lineman's and tree trimmer's climbers. For compatibility with other brands, consult the manual or contact Klein Tools.
How often should I replace the metal inserts?
Replace immediately if the insert is cracked, bent, or if the retainer bar is missing, cracked, or bent. Inspect before each use.
What does the minimum overlap warning tag mean?
This tag indicates the minimum Velcro® overlap setting to properly secure the pad. You must pass the tag through the locking buckle to ensure sufficient Velcro® contact. Failure to do so could cause the pad to release and result in serious injury.
Is this equipment certified?
Yes, the Hydra-Cool™ protector pads meet the requirements of ASTM F887 standard for climbing personal protective equipment.
