Frequently Asked Questions - Chorus Nowsonic

What type of power does the Chorus microphone require?
The Chorus requires 48 V phantom power provided by the preamp or mixing console.
Is the Chorus cardioid?
Yes, the Chorus has a cardioid polar pattern, ideal for capturing the main sound while reducing side and rear noise.
How to use the -10 dB attenuator?
Activate the bottom switch on the front to enable the -10 dB attenuator. This allows recording very loud sources (amps, drums) without distortion up to 145 dB SPL.
What is the high-pass filter for?
The high-pass filter (top switch) attenuates frequencies below 160 Hz (-6 dB/octave). It reduces proximity effect and low-frequency noise.
Is the foam windscreen included?
Yes, the Chorus comes with a foam windscreen that serves as anti-pop protection for vocal recordings.
How to maintain the microphone?
Protect it from humidity and shocks. Always store it in its carrying case after use. Clean the exterior with a soft dry cloth.
What type of cable to use?
Use a balanced XLR cable to connect the microphone to a preamp.
Is the Chorus suitable for stage?
Yes, it can be used live on stage thanks to its robustness and elastic suspension that isolates vibrations.
What to do in case of feedback?
Immediately reduce the gain of the microphone or the volume of the monitoring system. Move the microphone away from speakers.
Where to find spare parts or get the Chorus repaired?

Introduction

Thank you very much for purchasing the Nowsonic Chorus! Chorus was especially designed for recording applications. The large diaphragm condenser mic features a gold plated dual diaphragm with a 34mm diameter. The polar pattern is cardioid. Thanks to a transformer-free circuitry and a variable PAD, Chorus can handle a peak level of 145dB without clipping. Therefore, the mic is also suited for vocal recordings as well as for capturing guitar amplifiers or even for orchestral recordings. Chorus features a switchable high pass filter (-6dB/octave at 160Hz) for reducing low frequency noise. With the high-quality shock-mount and a solid transport case, the microphone is recommended for professional applications in recording, broadcast, and TV studios, on stage as well as for live applications and for personal recording.

Please take your time to read these instructions carefully in order to operate Chorus properly.

Please check the unit after unpacking for any damages. In case the housing is visibly damaged, please do not operate the unit, but contact your local dealer from whom you have purchased it.

Operating manual

Please take Chorus out of the transport case and insert the mic carefully into the supplied shock-mount: the elastic suspension can be mounted directly to any standard mic stand with a 5/8" or 3/8" thread (using a thread adapter) and decouples the microphone from the stand and therefore from any impact noise.

Connect the microphone to the mic input of an appropriate preamplifier using a balanced XLR cable (optional). Turn on your preamplifier and your recording and playback devices respectively and lower the volume to the minimum. Activate the phantom power at the preamplifier. Adjust the gain as needed while Chorus is directed to the audio source.

Note: Avoid any feedback loops! Chorus is very sensitive and therefore can be easily stimulated by so called feedback loops. If any feedback occurs, instantly lower the pre-amplification and/or turn down the playback volume of your monitoring system.

The upper switch on the microphone's front activates a high pass filter which damps low frequency noise: the filter attenuates signals below the cutoff frequency 160Hz with a slope of 6 dB/octave. In addition, this filter helps to reduce the so called proximity effect – an overemphasis of low frequencies at close range – when recording a voice or vocals.

When using Chorus for recording loud sources like guitar amplifiers, an orchestra or when you use it as an overhead for drum recordings, you can activate a -10dB PAD via the lower switch on the front of the microphone: when PAD is activated, Chorus can handle signals with up to 145dB without clipping.

The supplied foam windscreen is an alternative to professional pop filters and reduces pop noises when using Chorus for voice-overs and vocal recordings.

Instructions for Operation and Storage

The premium-quality circuitry inside the microphone is very sensitive. To avoid any damages, don't let the microphone fall down and protect it against excessive shock.

In order to preserve the microphone's sensitivity and audio quality, protect it from moisture and extreme temperatures.

If you do not use Chorus, you should pack the microphone in the supplied transport case.
