How to thread the needle on the Bernina 86?

Pass the thread through the upper guides, then the tension disc, then the take-up lever, and finally through the needle eye from front to back. Follow the threading diagram on the machine.

How to adjust the thread tension?

Use the tension dial located on the side of the machine. Turn clockwise to increase tension, counterclockwise to decrease. Test on a scrap of fabric.

What to do if the machine skips stitches?

Check that the needle is straight and correctly inserted. Replace it if blunt or bent. Make sure the thread is properly threaded and tension is suitable for the fabric.

How to clean the bobbin area?

Unplug the machine. Remove the needle plate and bobbin. Use a small brush to remove dust and lint. Replace the bobbin and screw the plate back on.

How to install the gatherer #86?

Place the foot holder in the up position. Attach the gatherer from the bottom right, placing the drive fork around the fixing screw. Lower the locking lever to secure it.

Why does the bobbin thread tangle?

Make sure the bobbin is correctly inserted in the case and the thread comes out in the right direction. Check that the bobbin thread tension is adjusted correctly (small screw on the case).

How to change the needle?

Unplug the machine. Loosen the needle clamp screw with a screwdriver. Remove the old needle and insert the new one (flat side to the back). Tighten the screw.

What types of fabric can I sew with the Bernina 86?

The machine is suitable for medium fabrics such as cotton, linen, and synthetics. For thick fabrics (denim) or very thin (silk), use a suitable needle and adjust the pressure.

How to adjust the stitch length?

Use the stitch length adjustment knob located on top of the machine. Turn it to increase (longer stitches) or decrease (shorter stitches) the length.

To ensure your safety

Assembly

Read the instruction manual of the sewing machine as well as of this accessory carefully before use!
The presser foot bracket (1) as well as the needle bar (2) must be at highest position.
- Surround the needle fastening screw (4) with the driving lever (3) of the ruffler foot by pushing it diagonally from the bottom right and arrange the shank opening on the cone (1a).
Fasten the ruffler foot by tightening the fixing lever.

Activate the ruffler foot #86 by pressing the presser foot indication in the display.

Threader mechanism is deactivated.

Test sew first!
Position the edge of the fabric between the ruffler blade (7) and the separating blade guiding (8) it through the slot-guide (9) with the fabric edge flush with the right side of the slot.
- Pull the fabric backwards that the feed dog can catch it properly.
Lower the ruffler foot and bring it into sewing position.
The pleat depth can be increased (A) or reduced (B) at the setscrew (10) using a screw driver.
The pleat density can be pre-selected via the stitch selection lever (11) (see picture C).
The distance of the single pleats can additionally be influenced via the stitch length adjustment - the longer the stitch the larger the space between each pleat.

Tips

Some smooth and coated materials as well as heavy fabrics are unsuitable for gathering.
