2. INSTRUMENT DESCRIPTION

This megohmmeter is designed to provide you with a strong guarantee of safety, maximum protection and unequalled performance.

It is a portable, professional, standalone measurement instrument for use by electricians, in order to measure the following magnitudes :

  • AC -DC voltages (TRMS) from 0 to 440V
    resistances (200 MΩ at 500 V dc)
    resistances (200 MΩ at 250 V dc)
    resistances (20 MΩ at 50 V dc)
  • continuity up to 10 (at 200mA )

These magnitudes can be accessed using a rotary switch.

2.1. Power supply

The megohmeter is powered by three standard 1.5 V batteries (type LR03) providing an endurance of about 850 × 5 s measures. For an endurance of one thousand measures, use the DURACELL MN 2400 ULTRA type.

Keep in mind that the power needed for the battery test (see below) is equal to one measure. It is therefore advised to perform this test only once every 60 measures.

2.1.1. Self-checking of batteries " TEST"

Before carrying out a measurement campaign, it is important to check that the instrument power supply batteries are in good condition.

The ---^EST position of the rotary switch indicates the state of the batteries (it is necessary to press the probe push button).

On the scale, there is an area with two different colours :

  • if the needle is positioned in the green area = batteries are charged,
  • if the needle is positioned in the red area = batteries are discharged.

2.1.2. Replacing the batteries

METRIX MX 406B - Replacing the batteries - 1

Unplug measurement circuit test cables, put the rotary switch to the off position and remove test cables from the instruments.

Proceed as follows to replace the megohmmeter batteries :

  1. Remove the four screws from the back of the instrument.
  2. Remove the lower box.
  3. Replace the batteries, taking care that they are in the right direction.
  4. Close the instrument.

2.2. Input terminals

Measurements are made with a specific probe (equipped with a push button) connected to the input terminals through a grey cable and a tripod connector, and with a black cable and a crocodile clip.

2.3. Scale

The measurement readout is of the analog type. The megohmmeter is fitted with a graduated scale and a needle.

The scale is graduated to give a direct reading without any multiplication factor (logarithmic graduation).

  • the scale length is 79 mm (circular arc according to IEC standard 51)
-logarithmic scale for the 200M 500 V range (blue scale)
-logarithmic scale for the 200M 250 V range (blue scale)
-logarithmic scale for the 20M 50V range (blue scale)
-logarithmic scale for the 10 range (green scale)
  • 400 VAC + DC linear scale (red scale)
  • TE3T scale containing 2 colors (red and green scale).

3. FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION

As soon as the cables are connected to an AC voltage exceeding 100V , an indicator (located on the scale) lights up regardless of the switch position. For example, it may thus indicate the presence of mains voltage.

3.1. AC + DC voltage measurement

  • Measurement range: 0 to 440VAC + DC on the V2 position

The instrument gives the value in TRMS, the probe push button is ineffective in this function.

Accuracy: ± 2.5% (of full scale)
Protection:440V

3.2. Continuity test

A current is generated through the resistor to be measured. The voltage drop measured at its terminals is used to deduce its value.

Measurements must only be made on parts of installations or instruments that are out of voltage.

The measurement is automatic when pressing the probe push button.

Measurement range: 0 to 10

You will hear a beeper for resistances of 2 or less.

(Accuracy: -0 Ω / +0.5 Ω)

Measurement current: ≥ 200 mA for R ≤ 3
- Input protection : up to 440 Vac by CTP + MOSFET
Voltage at no load: 5 V
Accuracy : class 10 over the entire scale

3.3. Insulation measurement at 50V 250 V or 500 V

High voltage is generated at the terminals of the resistor to be measured. The voltage drop measured at the terminals of a known internal resistor in series with the resistor to be measured is used to deduce the value of the resistor.

Tests should only be carried out on circuits out of voltage (the mains light on the instrument scale must be off after disconnecting the test leads and before pressing the probe push button).

Connect the circuit to be measured to the instrument terminals, before starting the measurement.

Measurement results may be distorted by the impedances of additional circuits connected in parallel or by transient currents.

After a measurement, the high voltage present on the device under test discharges through the leads and the instrument if the switch is set to V2 position.

Measurement range: 200k to 200 MΩ at 250 V and 500 V

10 kΩ to 20 MΩ at 50 V

Measurement current: >1mA for R < 50k at 50V

1mAforR<250kΩat250V

1 mA for R < 500 kΩ at 500 V

Protection of inputs: up to 600 V AC

No load voltages: 60 V dc on the 50 V range
