How to connect the GTM 21 receiver to my Garmin GPS?

Disconnect the cigarette lighter cable from your GPS. Connect the GTM 21 receiver cable to the GPS power connector, then plug the other end into the vehicle's power outlet.

Where to place the GTM 21 antenna on the windshield?

Use the suction cups to position the antenna vertically on the windshield. It is recommended to place it a few centimeters from and parallel to the A-pillar.

What does the flashing yellow status LED mean?

A flashing yellow LED indicates that the receiver is determining the country you are in.

What to do if the LED stays steady red?

A steady red LED means a temporary loss of synchronization. Check that you are within range of an FM station broadcasting traffic data and that the receiver is properly powered.

How to know if my traffic information service subscription is active?

The subscription is automatically activated when your Garmin GPS acquires satellite signals while receiving traffic signals. You can check in your GPS traffic settings or consult the product packaging.

Can I use the GTM 21 without a subscription?

Why is my GPS not displaying traffic information?

GTM™ 21 Instructions

The Garmin ^® GTM 21 FM TMC Traffic Receiver receives Traffic Message Channel (TMC) information broadcast over the FM radio data system. When a traffic message is received, your Garmin GPS device can change your route to avoid the traffic incident. For coverage areas, refer to the Garmin Web site at www.garmin.com/traffic.

To receive traffic information, the traffic receiver must be connected to the GPS device, connected to an external power source, and the traffic receiver and GPS device must be in data range of an FM station transmitting TMC data.

NOTE: Garmin is not responsible for the accuracy of the traffic information.

Service and Subscription Information

Depending on your region, your traffic receiver receives traffic data through either a premium service or a free, public service. For information about your traffic service subscription, see the product packaging or the Traffic settings in the GPS device. The subscription activates automatically after your Garmin GPS device acquires satellite signals while receiving traffic signals from the service provider.

You can add other FM TMC subscriptions at any time. Check the Garmin Web site at www.garmin.com/fmtraffic for other available services.

Connecting Your GTM 21

1. Remove the vehicle power cable from your Garmin GPS.
2. Connect the cable on the GTM 21 to the power connector on your Garmin GPS.
3. Plug the other end into a power outlet in your vehicle.
4. Use the suction cups to route the antenna vertically on the windshield. We recommend routing it a few inches away from, and parallel to, the A-pillar.

Testing the Traffic Receiver

Observe the LEDs on the GTM 21: When the GTM 21 is connected to power, the Power LED is on. The GTM 21 may take up to five minutes to acquire data.

The Status LED indicates the status of the GTM 21:

• Yellow dot-dash flashes: determining which country you are currently in.
  • Yellow solid light: searching for signal.
  • Red solid light: momentary signal loss.
• Green solid light: normal traffic data.

Check the Map: Check the map on the GPS device for traffic incidents or a traffic icon. Refer to the owner's manual.

Verify Signal Strength: If you are inside a garage where radio signals cannot be received, drive the vehicle outside.

Verify that you are in a service area: Check for service from the pay service or free or premium services.

Using Traffic Data with Your Garmin GPS Device

The traffic receiver works with your Garmin GPS device to show traffic flow and incident information, and to enable routing around traffic incidents. Although each GPS device operates differently, they all provide similar traffic information.
