USER MANUAL Peins Palmer

YOUR TONEINTRODUCTION Congratulations on your purchase of the PALMER EINS all-tube head. Your EINS is a versatile single-ended guitar amplifier providing 1 watt of pure Class A output. This is more than you need for practicing at bed- room level, and mostly enough for quiet gigs and rehearsals when driving high-sensitivity loudspeakers. In fact, the EINS is surprisingly loud! Better still, it’s bursting with explosive, soulful tone. The single-end- ed design is highly regarded for its rich harmonics, organic breakup and touch responsiveness. A must for awesome crunch, overdrive and distortion sounds, just crank the EINS for power amp saturation without producing ear-splitting levels. It responds dynamically to your picking attack and guitar volume settings, and its sweet spot is so wide that it’s a “com- fort zone”. But there is more under the hood: simulated and hi-Z outputs turn the EINS into a veritable Swiss Army knife-type amp for multi-purpose usage. Most importantly, you can use these outputs without connecting a speaker cabinet – a built-in dummy load keeps the amp perfectly safe. Featuring the widely acclaimed Palmer PDI-09 filtering for state-of-the- art loudspeaker simulation, the simulated output doubles as a direct recording out and live sound DI for plugging straight into a PA system. The hi-Z output allows you to connect the EINS as a preamp into a dedi- cated power amp or instrument amplifier for stage volumes, or use it with a loop switcher as a dedicated overdrive and distortion “effect pedal”. Deceptively small, the EINS delivers big amp tone and pro performance from a complete stage and studio ready package - take it to the test, and the take it to the limits!

WARNINGS The lightning flash with arrowhead symbol, is intended to alert the user to the presence of un-insulated „dangerous voltage“ within the product‘s enclosure that may be of sufficient magni- tude to constitute a risk of electric shock to persons.

The exclamation point within an equilateral triangle is intended to alert the user to the presence of important operating and maintenance (servic- ing) instructions in the literature accompanying the appliance. EUROPEAN MODELS A power cord is supplied with an IEC molded socket at one end and a molded mains plug at the other end.If the fitted plug is unsuitable for your type of outlet sockets, it should be cut off and disposed of safely, in case it is inserted into a live socket elsewhere. If any part of the power cord set is damaged, the complete cord set should be replaced. The following information is for reference only. The wires in the mains lead are coloured in accordance with the following code: Earth (Ground): Green and Yellow (US - Green/Yellow) Neutral: Blue (US - White) Live (Hot): Brown (US – Black) As the colours of the wires in the mains lead may not correspond with the colored markings identifying the terminals in your plug, proceed as follows: The wire which is coloured Green and Yellow must be connected to the ter- minal in the plug which is marked with the letter E, the earth symbol, or colored Green or Green and Yellow. The wire which is coloured Blue must be connected to the terminal in the plug which is marked with the letter N or colored Black. The wire which is coloured Brown must be connected to the terminal in the plug which is marked with the letter L or colored Red Ensure that these colour codes are followed carefully in the event of the plug being changed. Ensure that all terminals are tightened securely and no loose strands of wire are present. Ensure that the cord grip is clamped over the outer jacket of the cable rather than over the wires.

Connect your guitar to this socket using a quality instrument cable with 1/4” plugs.

This controls the amp’s output level, breakup and saturation from low to mid volume cleans to crunch, overdrive and full-on distortion and com- pression. The threshold of distortion varies depending on the tube complement (see TUBE OPTIONS below). Once you’re in the “comfort zone” you can easily go from near-clean to rich, compressed distortion and everything in between by varying your touch or riding the guitar’s volume control.

This pushbutton increases gain in the “down” position for more output, distortion and compression.

This is basically a treble roll-off similar to the tone controls of most electric guitars. However, it does more than just set the amp’s tone. From sparkling bright (fully clockwise) to darker tones and muffled “blanket over the speaker” sounds, counterclockwise rotation also reduces distortion and overall output to some extent. This is fully intentional and provides additional breakup control for tweaking your overdrive and distortion tones to per- fection – especially useful when recording!

This lights up when the amp is “on” (power switch in “POWER” position).

This rocker switch toggles the EINS on (“POWER” position) and off.

Connect the included IEC cord to this socket for mains power supply. Caution: Do not operate the amp without a protective grounding connection.

With this switch you can adjust the unit to the mains voltage of your country. Usually you will not have to operate this switch as the unit is generally pre-configured depending on the country it is delivered to. Be sure to disconnect the unit from the mains before operating this switch!

This is a line output for direct recording and connection to a PA system. It uses the Palmer PDI-09’s filter module for natural-sounding speaker simulation. Connect this output to your recording interface or PA con- sole using a quality instrument cable (1/4” plug to interface / console connector type). Should you need a true DI-Output (balanced XLR out, Transformer isolated, Mic level signal), then you may connect a standard passive DI Box to this output. Featuring a built-in dummy load, the EINS does not require speaker con- nection for DI use. Whether you want to lay down a smoking track in the studio, rip into a searing solo on stage or rehearse a new song with your band, just bring your EINS, dial in the dirt, and spank the plank!

This output transforms the EINS into a preamp or “effect pedal”. Deliver- ing all of the amp’s power stage performance the hi-Z out takes single- ended tone to another level. For preamp use, connect this output to a dedicated power amp using a quality instrument cable with 1/4” plugs. This setup provides pure Class A bliss at.volume levels limited by the power amp’s output only. Alternatively, run the EINS from the hi-Z out into any instrument ampfli- er (“host” amps may impart their own tone). Always connect loudspeakers to the power and instrument amps using quality loudspeaker cable.

EN ENDE ESFor footswitchable “effect pedal” use you need a loop switcher (refer to the switcher manual for connection. The loop connectors are mostly la- belled “send” and “return”, or “receive”. The former is the loop out which connects to the EINS input, the latter are the loop ins and connect to the hi-z output). Note: some stompboxes feature a built-in effects loop which can be used to kick in the EINS along with the pedal itself–experiment!

This is where you connect speaker cabinets to the EINS. Using a quality loudspeaker cable with 1/4” plugs, connect the 8Ω out- put to a cabinet rated at 8 ohms, OR connect the 16Ω output to a cabinet rated at 16 ohms. If you don’t require insane amounts of clean headroom and running into highly efficient speakers, the EINS can easily hang with a subdued bass player and toned-down drummer rhythm section. You may also daisy chain cabinets to either output provided the final ohms load matches that of the output used. Caution: Never use the 8Ω and 16Ω outputs simultaneously!

The Palmer EINS default tube complement consists of an ECC83 preamp tube (V1) and ECC82 (V2) power tube. For different breakup and response char- acteristics you may also use the complements below: a) ECC83(V1) and ECC83(V2) –less volume, highest gain and earlier breakup for lead sounds b) ECC83(V1) and ECC81(V2) –less volume than default but more than (a), higher gain and earlier breakup c) ECC81(V1) and ECC82(V2) –more clean headroom, darker distortion sound d) ECC81(V1) and ECC83(V2) -lowest volume of all, breaks up later than (a), extremely precise distortion control
