Frequently Asked Questions - Schummel Hummel Schmidt

How does a game turn proceed?
The player places a flower card on the discard pile following the color rule. If no card matches, they draw a card.
What is the role of the vigilant worm?
The vigilant worm watches other players to catch them cheating red-handed. They themselves must remain honest and cannot cheat.
How to cheat in the game?
You can make cards disappear discreetly (e.g., hide them in your sleeve, throw them under the table). Note: your hand must stay on the table and the last card cannot disappear.
What happens if I am caught cheating?
If you are justly caught, you must take back the card and receive an additional card from the vigilant worm. You then become the new vigilant worm.
How to play a wasp?
If a wasp without a stinger is played, all other players must quickly slap the card. The slowest receives a card from each player. If the wasp has a stinger, do not slap, otherwise the first to slap receives a card from each player.
How to play a spider web?
The spider web can be placed on any card. The next player must then play a card with a spider. If they don't have one, they draw and skip their turn.
How to play a butterfly?
The player who plays a butterfly chooses another player who must draw a random card from their hand. This allows getting rid of rascal bumblebees.
How to play a pollinating bee?
The player announces 'Pollination!', takes the pollen card and tries to touch an opponent with it within 3 seconds. If successful, the opponent draws 2 cards. During this action, cheating is forbidden.
How to steal a grasshopper?
Each player has a grasshopper to their right and left. You can try to steal a neighbor's grasshopper. If the theft is noticed before the next card, the grasshopper is replaced. Otherwise, the robbed player draws 2 cards.
How does a round end and how are points counted?
The round ends when a player has no cards left in hand. Each flower card is worth -1 point, each action card -5 points, each rascal bumblebee -10 points. The player with the fewest negative points after as many rounds as there are players wins.

Idea of the game

Cheating at games is forbidden. But not in this game! In this case, by cheating skilfully and discarding cleverly, you try to be the first player to get rid of all your cards.

Preparing to play

The pollen card, the grasshopper cards and the Watchman Worm card are removed from the pack. The oldest player is given the Watchman Worm card, and they place it with the side without the telescope face-up in front of them. One grasshopper is placed between each two players so that both players can easily get to them. Any left-over grasshoppers are not needed for this round and are returned to the box. The pollen card is placed in the middle of the table so that all players can easily get to it. Shuffle the remaining cards well and deal 8 cards to each player without revealing them. Pick these cards up, and place the remaining cards face-down in the middle of the table as the draw pile. Turn over the top card on the draw pile and place it next to it face-up as the discard pile. If this card is an action card, the action is not performed. The two colours of the flowers apply.

How to play

The players take turns. The player holding the Watchman Worm card starts. When it is your turn, place one of the cards from your hand on the discard pile. The following applies: the card in your hand must contain

a flower with at least one of the colours displayed by the flower on the top card of the discard pile. It doesn't matter which part of the flower has the same colour. There are always two possible colours you can play.

Example: on a blue and red flower, you can only put down a flower which is blue, red or both colours.

Schmidt Schummel Hummel - How to play - 1

You haven't got a matching card in your hand? Then you have to pick up a card from the draw pile. Now it is the next player's turn.

Cheating

You can cleverly make individual cards (be it a cheating bumblebee, action card or flower card) disappear by, for example, dropping them under the table, throwing them over your shoulder, placing them on the discard pile without anyone noticing, or hiding them up your sleeve...

You can do anything you find fun!

But there are still rules even for cheating:

You must always keep your hand of cards above the table.
You are not allowed to cheat by making more than one card disappear at a time.
If a player is caught cheating, there may be no cheating while the matter is being settled.
You are not allowed to get rid of the last card in your hand by cheating.

Watchman Worm

If you have this card, you are Watchman Worm for this round. You join in the game quite normally, but you keep a close eye on the other players. They will all try to make cards disappear secretly. As Watchman Worm, you must always play fairly and you are not allowed to cheat. If you catch another player in the act, you call out loud: "Caught you!"

Schmidt Schummel Hummel - Watchman Worm - 1

Caught

If the player with Watchman Worm has caught you in the act of cheating, the game is interrupted to settle the matter.

You have been rightly accused of cheating?

Then you must

immediately put the card you wanted to make disappear back in your hand, and the player who is Watchman Worm this round gives you 1 of their cards. You are also given the Watchman Worm card. From now on you are the new Watchman!

You have been incorrectly accused of cheating?

Then the Watchman

must take a penalty card from the draw pile. They continue to be the Watchman. It is forbidden to tell on the other players!

Cheating bumblebee

The cheeky cheating bumblebee may not be played on the discard pile and may not be given away. The only way to get rid of it is by means of skilful cheating!

Schmidt Schummel Hummel - Cheating bumblebee - 1

Exception: the player who is Watchman Worm may play the cheating bumblebee on the discard pile.

Tip: try to get rid of the bumblebees as soon as you can!

Action cards

... are played according to the discard rule.

Wasps

The wasps are distinguished from each other by means of a tiny stinger. If a wasp without stinger is played, everyone – except the active player – bangs their flat hand down on the wasp card as quickly as they can. The slowest player is given a card from the hand of each other player (but not the cheating bumblebee card).

Caution: if the wasp has a stinger don't, whatever you do, bang on the wasp card! The first player to bang on the wasp is given a card from the hand of each other player (but not the cheating bumblebee card). If nobody bangs on the wasp, continue the game as before after about 3 seconds.

Spider's web and spider

The spider's web may be placed on any card. The following player must now play any card with a spider on it! If this player doesn't have a spider in their hand, they have to pick up a card from the draw pile and miss a round. Then it is the next player's turn and they have to put down a spider.

Butterfly

The player to put down a butterfly nominates one player to give them 1 of the cards in their hand, face-down.

Tip: this is one way of getting rid of a cheating bumblebee!

Pollinator bee

If the active player puts down a pollinator bee, he calls out loud: "Pollination!" and grabs the pollen card. At the same time, all other players get out of harm's way. The active player tries to hit one of the other players with the pollen card within 3 seconds. If he hits another player, this player has to pick up 2 cards from the draw pile. If they don't hit another player, the game continues as before.

Caution: no cheating is allowed during this action! At the end of this action, replace the pollen card in the middle of the table.

Grasshopper

Each player has a grasshopper located to the left and the right of them, and they have to look after them. During the game, the players can try to steal the grasshopper from each other, at any point of the game. If a grasshopper is stolen without it being noticed, the robbed player can object until the next card is played on the discard pile.

Caution: other players are not allowed to report the theft of a grasshopper that doesn't belong to them. Not even the player with the Watchman Worm card. Younger Watchmen Worms can be freed of the responsibility to look after the grasshoppers.

End of the round

If a player has no cards left in their hand, the round ends.

Scoring the round

Each flower card scores 1 minus point, each action card scores 5 minus points and each cheating bumblebee card scores 10 minus points. In the next round, the player to the left of the player who started in the last round gets the Watchman Worm card.

End of the game

The game lasts for as many rounds as there are players. The player with the fewest minus points at the end wins the game!

For proper professional cheats:

Watchman Worm must be easily visible at all times. The Watchman player can always turn over the Watchman Worm card at any time right after a card has been played, thus changing the way the flower cards are played:

Without telescope: as described above, put down the flowers to match the colour.

With telescope: only the flowers that don't match the colour can be played now. The flowers are now played such that they don't match the colours until such time as the Watchman Worm card is turned back to the other side.

Example: you can only put down the colours green, yellow or violet on a blue and red flower. The card may not contain the colours blue or red.

Tip: "unintentional" cheating is punished according to the cheating rule.
