- Read and understand this manual and all labels on the Backpack Vac before operating. Failure to do so can result in serious injury or death.

- Use only as described in this manual.

- Do not use outdoors or on wet surfaces.

- Do not try to recover any liquid with this vacuum. This Backpack Vac is for DRY RECOVERY Only. Immediately STOP using the vacuum if liquid is recovered. Unplug and remove all of the filters, dry the interior of the Backpack Vac. Call customer service for assistance.

- Do not leave Vac running while unattended - you may fail to notice important signs indicating abnormal operation such as loss of suction, debris exiting exhaust, or abnormal motor noises. Immediately stop using Vac if you notice these signs.

- Do not leave Vac when plugged in. Unplug from outlet when not in use and before servicing.

- Sparks inside the motor can ignite flammable vapors or dust. To reduce the risk of fire or explosion, do not use near combustible liquids, gases, or dusts, such as gasoline or other fuels, lighter fluid, cleaners, oil-based paints, natural gas, coal dust, magnesium dust, grain dust, aluminum dust, or gun powder.

- Do not vacuum anything that is burning or smoking, such as cigarettes, matches, or hot ashes.

- To avoid the risk of self-ignition of debris, empty filters after each use. Combustible materials, such as rags or sawdust containing stain or urethane, can be sources of such overheating.

- For fine dust pickup, use the VFB610 filter bag (sold separately).

- To reduce the risk of inhaling toxic vapors, do not vacuum or use near toxic or hazardous materials.

- To reduce the risk of electric shock, do not expose to rain or allow liquid to enter motor compartment. Store in an indoor, dry location, unplugged.

- This Backpack Vac is not intended for use by persons (including children) with reduced physical, sensory, or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, unless they have been given supervision or instruction concerning use of the appliance by a person responsible for their safety.

- Do not allow to be used as a toy. Close attention is necessary when used by or near children.

- Turn off Vac before unplugging.

- Do not use with a torn filter. Dry filter bag (VFB600) must be used within the cloth filter (VFB102). Do not operate without both filters installed.

- Empty the filters after every use and before storage. Some types of wood dust and debris may catch on fire, if stored in the vacuum.

- Connect power cord to a properly grounded outlet only. See Grounding Instructions.

- To reduce the risk of injury from accidental starting, unplug power cord before changing or cleaning filters.

- Do not unplug by pulling on cord. To unplug, grasp the plug, not the cord.

- Do not use with a damaged cord or plug. Inspect the electrical cord before and after each use. A cord that has a cut or worn jacket, exposed or frayed wires, damaged or missing prongs can result in electric shock, fire, injury or death.

- Do not use the vacuum if it has damaged or missing parts. If your Vac is not working as it should, has missing parts, has been dropped, damaged, left outdoors, or dropped into water, call customer service.

- Do not pull or carry by cord, use cord as handle, close a door on cord, or pull cord around sharp edges or corners. Keep cord away from heated surfaces.

- Do not handle plug, switch, or the Vac with wet hands.

- Do not put any object into ventilation openings. Do not vacuum with any ventilation openings blocked; keep free of dust, lint, hair or anything that may reduce air flow.

- Keep hair, loose clothing, fingers, and all parts of body away from openings and moving parts.

- To reduce the risk of falls, use extra care when cleaning on stairs.

- To reduce the risk of personal injury or damage to Vac, use only RIDGID recommended accessories.

- To reduce the risk of eye injury, wear safety eyewear. The operation of the Backpack Vac can result in foreign objects being blown into the eyes, which can result in severe eye damage.

- Do not store or stack items on top of Vac.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

▲ CAUTION:

• To reduce the risk of hearing damage, wear ear protectors when using for extended hours or in a noisy area.
• Static shocks are common when the relative humidity of the air is low. Vacuuming fine debris with your Vac can deposit static charge on the hose or Vac. To reduce the frequency of static shocks in your home or when using this Vac, add moisture to the air with a humidifier.

Observe the following warnings that appear on the exterior of the vacuum enclosure:

WARNING:

To reduce the risk of personal injury due to a loose electrical connection between the plug and wall outlet, firmly and fully attach the plug to the wall outlet. Periodically check the connection while operating to ensure it is fully attached. Do not use a cord that provides a loose plug connection, has loose, bent or broken electrical prongs. A loose cord plug connection and or damaged prongs may result in overheating and increases the risk of a burn.

WARNING:

To reduce the risk of electric shock - do not expose to rain - store indoors.

Do not stand or sit on vac. Improper use may cause injury.

To reduce the risk of fire, never block the exhaust ports with any object.

To avoid health hazards from vapors or dust, do not vacuum toxic, carcinogenic or other hazardous materials such as asbestos, arsenic, barium, beryllium, lead, pesticides or other health endangering materials.

GROUNDING INSTRUCTIONS

THIS BACKPACK VAC MUST BE GROUNDED.

If the Backpack Vac should malfunction or stop working, grounding provides a path of least resistance for electrical current, thereby reducing the risk of electrical shock. This unit is equipped with a cord that has an equipment-grounding conductor and grounding plug. The plug must be inserted in an appropriate outlet that is properly installed and grounded in accordance with all local codes and ordinances. Cutting off the ground wire or using a cord that is not equipped with a ground plug will void the warranty on the unit, and RIDGID will accept NO liability associated with the unit.

WARNING:

Improper connection of the equipment-grounding conductor can result in a risk of electrical shock. Check with a qualified electrician or service person if you are unsure that the outlet is properly grounded. Do not modify the plug provided with the vacuum. If it will not fit the outlet, have a proper outlet installed by a qualified electrician.

The Backpack Vac in this manual is for use on a nominal 120-volt circuit, and have a grounded plug (shown in Fig. A). A temporary adapter (shown in Fig. B) may be used to connect this plug to a 2-pole receptacle, if a properly grounded outlet is not available. The temporary adapter should be used only until a properly grounded outlet can be installed by a qualified electrician. The green colored rigid ear, lug, or the like extending from the adapter must be connected to a permanent ground such as a properly grounded outlet box cover. Whenever the adapter is used, it must be held in place by a metal screw.

NOTE: In Canada, the use of a temporary adapter is not permitted by the Canadian Electrical Code.

For Canada – This appliance is for use on a nominal 120-volt circuit and has a grounded attachment plug that looks like the plug (shown in Fig. A). Make sure that the vacuums are connected to an outlet having the same configuration as the plug. No adapter should be used with the vacuums detailed in this manual.

INTRODUCTION

This Backpack Vac is intended for household use. This Backpack Vac is for DRY RECOVERY Only.

Read this Owner's Manual to familiarize yourself with the product features and to understand the specific usage of your new Vac.

GETTING TO KNOW YOUR BACKPACK VAC

Familiarize yourself with the controls and features of your Vac before operating. Familiarize yourself with the accessories included with the Vac. Each accessory may be used in various ways for vacuuming debris. Here is a list of the accessories and their uses.

Master Floor Tool with Carpet Brush Insert & Floor Brush Insert - Use for vacuuming large areas quickly, such as job sites.

Extension Wands - Use in combination with the floor tool accessory or by itself to clean difficult to reach locations.

Crevice Tool - Use to pick up debris in hard to reach locations.

Dusting Brush - Use for sweeping up areas with dust or debris. Great for detailed cleaning.

QUICK START (Figs. 2A, 2B, 2C, & 2D)

1. Unlatch the three clamps on the top of the unit and remove the Backpack Vac lid (Fig. 2A).
2. Remove the dry filter bag (VFB600) (C) and the cloth filter (VFB102) (B) from the Backpack Vac (A) (Fig. 2B).
3. Check to make sure the dome filter at the bottom of the Backpack Vac (A), did not shift during shipping (Fig. 2C).
4. Replace the cloth filter and the dry filter bag into the Backpack Vac (Fig. 2B). For fine dust pickup (pet dander, drywall dust, allergens) use the VFB610 filter bag (sold separately). For all other pickup, use the VFB600 dry filter bag (C).
5. Replace the lid and relatch the three clamps (Fig. 2A).
6. Push the hose (D) into the lid inlet Vac port (Fig. 2D).

ASSEMBLY

INSTALLATION OF FILTERS (Fig. 3)

1. Unlatch the three clamps off of the top of the Backpack Vac lid by pulling out from the bottom of the clamps. Rotate clamp up and out of the three lid's clamp lips.
2. Remove the lid and set it in a dry safe area.
3. Align and place the cloth filter (VFB102) (B) into the Backpack Vac (A) so the rubber top edge is flush with the Vac.
4. Align and position the dry filter bag (VFB600) (C) into the cloth filter (B) located inside the Backpack Vac (A) flush with the cloth filter's rubber top edge.
5. Align and replace the Backpack Vac lid onto the Backpack Vac.
6. Rotate the three clamps up and onto the three lid's clamp lips. Push in on the bottom of the three clamps to secure the Backpack Vac lid.

ATTACHING AND REMOVING VACUUM HOSE (Fig. 4)

1. To insert hose into Vac inlet port: The Backpack Vac lid must be latched into place before inserting the hose (D). Place the 90 degree end of the hose into the lid inlet Vac port located on top of the Backpack Vac lid. Push down on the hose until it is completely inserted into the lid inlet Vac port and snug against the hose lip.
2. To remove the hose from the lid inlet Vac port: Turn Vac OFF. Gently pull the hose (D) up and out of the lid inlet Vac port.

INSTALLING POWER CORD IN CORD RETAINER (Figs. 5A, 5B, & 5C)

WARNING:

To reduce the risk of electric shock or injury:

- Maintain vacuum with care. Inspect electrical cord before and after each use. A cord that has a cut or abraded jacket, exposed or frayed wires, or damaged, missing, loose prongs can result in electric shock, fire, injury or death. Immediately stop using the vacuum, if damaged is found.

- Power cord must always be installed in the cord retainer while operating the vacuum. Secure the power cord to the vacuum using the cord retainer on the waist belt as shown on page 9, Fig. 5C. Failure to use the cord retainer can result in electric, shock, fire, injury or death.

- To reduce the risk of personal injury due to a loose electrical connection between the vacuum's plug and the electrical outlet, firmly and fully attach the vacuum plug to the electrical outlet. Periodically check the connection while operating to ensure it is fully attached. Do not use a power cord that provides a loose connection. A loose connection may result in overheating, fire, and increases the risk of a burn.

NOTE: The power cord should NOT be plugged into the wall outlet at this time.

For your safety:

1. Loop the power cord approximately 12-inches after the switch box (Fig. 5B).

1. Position the power cord loop through the backside of the cord retainer and through the cord retainer slot (Fig. 5C).
2. Slip the power cord loop over the cord retainer hook (Fig. 5C).
3. Gently tug on the power cord to secure the power cord into the cord retainer (Fig. 5C).

HARNESS HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT (Fig. 6)

1. The upper harness should sit between shoulder blades for most comfortable fit. The Backpack Vac (A) was shipped with the upper harness in the upper position. If you are a shorter user, you will need to move the harness down to the lower position.
2. To re-adjust the upper harness: Loosen the tension straps. Pull the harness back padding away from the upper harness plastic support to expose the two Backpack harness screws and washers.
3. Using a #3 Philips screwdriver (not supplied), unthread both Backpack harness screws, washers, and spacers from the Backpack Vac. The screws and washers are located in the center of upper harness plastic support.
4. Realign the two screw holes at the new position. Replace the previously removed two screws, washers and spacers into the Backpack harness plastic support and tightly secure it to the Backpack Vac. The original spacers must be used for correct support of the upper harness.

ASSEMBLY

BACKPACK ERGONOMICS (Fig. 7)

1. Always use the harness carry handle to pick up the Backpack Vac (A).
2. The weight of the Backpack Vac should be evenly distributed on your hips.
3. Adjust the padded waist belt and shoulder straps for a custom fit.
4. Use the proper accessory attachments for the job. RIDGID has accessory attachments to perform most jobs without requiring you to bend over or getting into difficult positions.

WEARING THE BACKPACK VAC (Figs. 8A, 8B, 8C, 8D, 8E, & 8F)

1. Loosen the shoulder straps and the waist belt. Lift the Backpack Vac (A) and slide your arms through the shoulder straps. The upper harness can also be adjusted by tightening or loosening the upper harness buckles for a custom fit (Fig 8A).
2. Connect the waist strap buckles (Fig. 8B).
3. Tighten the waist belt by grabbing the ends of the waist belt straps and pulling each end toward each other and then directly outward from the center of the body (Fig. 8C). It is very important that the weight of the unit be concentrated on your hips rather than your shoulders.
4. Adjust the shoulder straps so that the unit fits comfortably, but the weight is still concentrated on your hips (Fig. 8D).
5. Connect the sternum strap buckles (Fig. 8E).
6. Tighten the sternum strap by grabbing the ends of the sternum straps and pulling each end toward each other and then directly outward from the center of the body (Fig. 8F).

• Do not leave Vac running while unattended - you may fail to notice important signs indicating abnormal operation such as loss of suction, debris exiting the exhaust, or abnormal motor noises. Immediately stop using Vac if you notice these signs.
• Do not leave Vac plugged in when not in use.
• Do not vacuum up explosive dusts, flammable liquids, or hot ashes.
• Sparks inside the motor can ignite airborne flammables. Do not operate Vac near flammable liquids or in areas with flammable gases, vapors, or explosive/airborne dust. Flammable liquids, gases, and vapors include: lighter fluid, solvent-type cleaners, oil-based paints, gasoline, alcohol, and aerosol sprays. Explosive dusts include: coal, magnesium, aluminum, grain, and gun powder.
• Do not leave sawdust or rags with stain or polyurethane residue inside the Vac. Empty Backpack Vac after picking up these potentially self-heating materials.

• Do not try to recover any liquid with this vacuum. This Backpack Vac is for DRY RECOVERY Only.
• Do not expose to rain or allow liquid to enter motor compartment. Store indoors.
• Do not handle plug, switch, or Vac with wet hands.
• Unplug Vac before servicing. If your Vac is not working as it should, has missing parts, has been dropped, damaged, left outdoors, or dropped into water, immediately stop using the vacuum and call customer service.
• When using an extension cord, use only outdoor-rated cords that are in good condition. Do not allow the connection to come into contact with liquid.

Violation of any of these instructions may void any and all warranties.

MOTOR

Electric thru-flow vacuum motors must never be used in applications in which wet or moist conditions are involved, where dry chemicals or other volatile materials are present, or where airflow may be restricted or blocked. Such motors are designed to permit the vacuumed air to pass through the motor to cool it. Therefore, any liquid (including water), dry chemical, or other foreign substance which would come in contact with motor could cause combustion (depending on volatility) or electrical shock. Failure to observe these precautions could result in property damage and personal injury, including death in extreme cases.

ELECTRICAL

This Backpack Vac model is available in 120 volt / 60 Hz. This document only applies to 120 volt / 60 Hz models. Severe changes in voltage, high or low, can cause damage to the motor and cause premature motor failure.

The Backpack Vac described in this manual is equipped with a thermal protection cutoff device. This integrated thermal cutoff switch will remove power from the vacuum motor in the event excessively high operating temperatures are detected. This condition may arise as the result of a blocked vacuum passage, or clogged or full filters.

Should a thermal trip take place, immediately turn OFF and unplug the Backpack Vac and inspect for a blockage and verify the condition of the filter bag. Replace or empty the filter bag as required. The Backpack Vac will require several minutes to cool down to a safe operating temperature. When this temperature is attained, the thermal switch will reset and the Backpack Vac will be able to be used in a normal manner.

NOTE: The power cord should NOT be plugged into the wall outlet at this time.

Do Not operate the vacuum without the power cord installed in the cord retainer, see Figs. 5A, 5B & 5C.

NOTE: Do not tie power cord to the waist belt or any portion on the body harness. Doing so will result in damage to the power cord and will not be covered under warranty.

With Backpack Vac (A) securely positioned and fastened on body, continue with the following:

1. Attach one of the extension wand locking tab end to the non-tab end of the other extension wand (G).

Depending on the surface cleanup, choose one of the following accessory attachments:

2a. To clean tough messes on carpets: Attach the carpet brush insert (I) onto the bottom of the master floor tool (H) by sliding both grey locking buttons outward to the "LOCK" position.

To detach the carpet brush insert: Slide both grey locking buttons inward to the "OPEN" position on the master floor tool to release the carpet brush insert.

2b. To clean tough messes on hard surfaces: Attach the floor brush insert (J) onto the bottom of the master floor tool (H) by sliding both grey locking buttons outward to the "LOCK" position.

To detach the floor brush insert: Slide both grey locking buttons inward to the "OPEN" position on the master floor tool to release the floor brush insert.

2c. To clean debris in tight spaces: Attach the crevice tool (E) to the extension wand locking tab end.

2d. To clean using bristles for easy removal of dust: Attach the dusting brush (F) to the extension wand locking tab end.

1. With the hose (D) already installed into the top of the Backpack Vac lid, push the extension wands into the hose end.

2. Plug the power cord into the wall outlet.

3. The ON/OFF switch box is conveniently located near the waist belt of the Backpack Vac.

4. With power cord plugged in, turn the Vac "ON" by pushing the switch from position "O" to position "I", located on the switch box. To turn "OFF", push the switch from position "I" to position "O". The symbols used on the switch actuator are international "ON & OFF" symbols.

OPERATION

PROPER VACUUMING MOTION FOR LARGE AREAS (Fig. 10)

With Backpack Vac (A) securely positioned and fastened on body, continue with the following:

1. Begin with the extension wands (G) parallel to your body.
2. Draw the top of the wand in toward your waist and then push the wands outward, as you walk.
3. The motion will keep the upper body and arms from tiring.

VACUUMING DRY MATERIAL ONLY

1. The dry filter bag and cloth filter must always be installed in the correct position at all times to avoid leaks and possible damage to Vac.

NOTE: Dry filter bag must be used within the cloth filter.

1. When using your Vac to pick up dust, it will be necessary for you to empty the Backpack Vac and clean the filters at more frequent intervals to maintain peak Vac performance.

NOTE: Dry filter bags are necessary to pick up dry material only.

WARNING:

Do not use without all filters installed or with a torn filter. Dry filter bag (VFB600) or fine dust filter bag (VFB610) must be used within the cloth filter (VFB102).

FILTER MAINTENANCE

(Figs. 11A, 11B, 11C, & 11D)

WARNING:

To reduce the risk of injury from accidental starting, unplug power cord before performing filter maintenance.

1. Unplug power cord from power source.
2. Empty and inspect the dry filter bag (VFB600) (C) every time you start and finish vacuuming (Fig. 11A). Replace the dry filter bag (VFB600) if necessary. A clogged and dirty filter restricts airflow and results in reduced suction and overheating.
3. To replace with a new dry filter bag (VFB600): Remove the used dry filter bag and discard. Slide the new dry filter bag (VFB600) (C) into the cloth filter (VFB102) (B) and secure into Backpack Vac (A) (Fig. 11B).
4. As necessary, hand or machine wash the cloth filter (VFB102) (B) and let it air dry. DO NOT put the cloth filter in the dryer (Fig. 11C).
5. As necessary, clean the dome filter:
   a. First, remove the dry filter bag and cloth filter from the Backpack Vac (A).
   b. Reach into the Backpack Vac (A) and pull the dome filter grate off and remove the dome foam filter (Fig. 11D).
   c. Shake the dome foam filter, rinse it and let it air dry thoroughly.
   d. Once the dome foam filter is dry replace the dome foam filter onto the dome filter compartment and firmly snap the dome filter grate into place (Fig. 11D).

RECOMMENDED PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE

WARNING:

• The following information provides guidance for trouble shooting and maintenance under normal working conditions.
• Unplug the Backpack Vac when cleaning or replacing the filters.

WARNING:

• To reduce the risk of injury from accidental starting, unplug power cord before performing any maintenance.
• Check the condition of the power cord before each use.

UPON RECEIPT

Check the Backpack Vac for any defects, missing or broken parts. Call RIDGID with this information, along with any questions you may have.

DAILY BEFORE AND AFTER EACH USE

Check the dry filter bag. Replace the dry filter bag if it is full. Use only genuine RIDGID replacement filters to ensure optimal performance. Check the cloth filter. If dirty, rinse out and air dry before replacing the cloth filter back into the Backpack Vac. All filters must be in place to operate the Backpack Vac.

PERIODICALLY

Check the harness for fit and comfort. If harness is damaged and unusable, contact customer service to order a new harness.

POWER CORD CARE

NEVER stretch the power cord tightly between the Backpack Vac and the outlet. A power cord that is stretched or pulled may not function properly, can damage the power cord or plug, and creates a tripping hazard. Stop using the vacuum if the cord or plug is damaged.

DO NOT tie the power cord to the harness body in any way. Always use the cord retainer to secure the power cord while the Backpack Vac is in operation.

After vacuuming, unplug the power cord and wind it up loosely.

• Lay the power cord out, as straight as possible, on the floor before winding.
• DO NOT wind the power cord up by wrapping it around your hand and elbow, as repeated winding in this manner will result in twisted power cord that is hard to wind and unwind.
