Frequently Asked Questions - OB5029 IFM

How to mount the OB5029 receiver?
Mount the device on a standard DIN rail or use a suitable mounting accessory. Ensure it is securely fixed.
Which fiber optics are compatible with the OB5029?
ifm fiber optics of type FE-50 (through-beam) and FT-50-AAJ (direct reflection) are compatible.
How to electrically connect the OB5029?
Disconnect power. Connect wires according to color code: brown (BN) = +V, blue (BU) = 0V, black (BK) = output. Refer to the label for output function programming.
How to set the switching threshold for moving objects?
1. Pass the objects through the beam. 2. Press until the red LED flashes. 3. Press once to confirm, then a second time. The yellow and green LEDs flash alternately during programming.
How to set the switching threshold for stationary objects?
1. Press until the red LED flashes. 2. Place the object in the beam then press once. 3. Remove the object and press again. The reverse order is also possible.
What do the LEDs on the OB5029 indicate?
Red LED on: detection error (incorrect adjustment or contamination). Red LED flashing rapidly: short circuit at output. Yellow LED: switching status (on when switched). Green LED: device powered and ready.
How to clean the fiber optics?
If dirty, gently clean the fiber ends with a lint-free cloth and suitable cleaner. Avoid scratching the lenses.
Why does the red LED flash after adjustment?
This indicates that the switching threshold adjustment is not possible, usually because the object and background signals are too similar. The device retains the previous threshold.
What is the protection rating of the OB5029?
The protection rating is IP65 when the cover is closed after adjustment. This ensures dust and water splash protection.
How to replace a fiber optic?
Unscrew the clamping screw (A), remove the old fiber, insert the new one up to the stop, then retighten. Ensure the fiber is at the stop for optimal range.

The switching amplifier senses objects and materials without contact and indicates their presence by a switching signal.

  • Only for the connection of the ifm fibre optics type FE-50 and FT-50.
  • Sensing range depends on the fibre optic.

Controls and indicators

IFM OB5029 - Controls and indicators - 1

red LED:

  • indicates the setting mode
  • lights in the uncertain reception zone (maladjustment, soiling of the lens)
  • flashes quickly: output short-circuited
  • flashes slowly: internal malfunction

yellow LED:

switching status, lights when the output is switched

green LED:

lights when ready for operation

push button: starts the manual setting of the switching threshold

Mounting

Mount the unit on a DIN rail or by means of a mounting fixture.

Mount the fibre optics:

  1. Loosen the screw A.
  2. Push the fibre optics into the sensor holes B until you feel a stop and hold them.
  3. Tighten the screw A.

IFM OB5029 - Mount the fibre optics: - 2

If the fibre optics are not in contact with the internal optics, the sensing range is reduced.

Electrical connection

IFM OB5029 - Electrical connection - 1

Isolate the power, then connect the unit as specified (see the last page or the type label).

  • Core colours (for sensors with cable connection): BN = brown, BU = blue, BK = black.
  • Programming of the output function by wiring (see the page 15 or the type label).

Setting of the switching threshold (1)

  • Objects move through the detection area
  • Diffuse reflection fibre (FT ...) and through-beam fibre (FE ...)

The unit detects input signals of various intensity in any sequence and calculates the optimum switching threshold.

1Allow the objects to pass trough the detection area. Press until the red LED flashes.Yellow and green LEDs flash alternately (= unit is in the programming mode).
2Press once.Yellow and green LEDs go out for a short time, then flash again alternately.
3Press once.Yellow and green LEDs go out for a short time, then the green LED is on (= unit is in the operating mode).

IFM OB5029 - Setting of the switching threshold (1) - 1

If the setting of the switching threshold is not possible (e.g. object signal and background signal are about the same), the red LED flashes after step 3. The unit then passes into the operating mode with the switching threshold being unchanged.

Setting of the switching threshold (2)

  • Stationary objects
  • Diffuse reflection fibre (FT ...) and through-beam fibre (FE ...) The unit detects input signals of various intensity in any sequence and calculates the optimum switching threshold.
1Press until the red LED flashes.Yellow and green LEDs flash alternately (= unit is in the programming mode).
2Place the object into the detection area.* Press once.Yellow and green LEDs go out for a short time, then flash again alternately.
3Remove the object.* Press once.Yellow and green LEDs go out for a short time, then the green LED is on (= unit is in the operating mode).
out on then the green LED is on (= unit is in the operating mode).
  • You can also proceed in reverse order: first setting without the object, then with the object.

IFM OB5029 - Setting of the switching threshold (2) - 1

If the setting of the switching threshold is not possible (e.g. object signal and background signal are about the same), the red LED flashes after step 3. The unit then passes into the operating mode with the switching threshold being unchanged.

Operation

Only open the cover to make adjustments. Close it after the adjustment has been made in order to maintain the protection IP65.

Check whether the unit functions properly.
