How to set up the ASUS RT-AC87R router for the first time?
Plug in the power adapter, connect your modem to the WAN port and your computer to a LAN port. Open a browser and go to http://router.asus.com or 192.168.1.1. Use the default credentials admin/admin. Download the latest firmware version from the ASUS support site. Log in to the administration interface, go to Administration > Firmware Update. Click Browse to select the file, then click Upload. Do not disconnect power during the update. The router will reboot automatically.
How to configure the wireless network (SSID and password)?
From the administration interface, go to Wireless > General. Select the band (2.4 GHz or 5 GHz). Enter an SSID (network name). Choose an authentication method (recommended: WPA2-Personal) and enter a security key (password). Click Apply. Repeat for the other band if necessary.
How to enable parental control?
Go to Parental Control in the administration interface. Enable the feature by clicking ON. Add a client by entering its MAC address or selecting it from the list. Configure access time schedules by clicking the edit icon in the Time Schedule column. Click Apply to save.

Connect your printer to a USB port on the router. From a Windows computer, install the ASUS EZ Printer Sharing utility (provided on CD or downloadable). Launch the utility, it will detect the printer and allow you to install it as a network printer. You can also use the LPR protocol for manual sharing.
How to set up a VPN server on the router?
Go to VPN Server in the interface. Check Yes for Enable PPTP Server. Enter a username and password for VPN clients. You can also configure advanced options such as the IP address range. Click Apply. VPN clients can connect using the router's public IP address.

Place the router in a central location, away from metal obstacles, microwaves, and cordless phones. Orient the 4 antennas vertically or at 45° for better coverage. In the interface, go to Wireless > General and set the channel to Auto to avoid interference. For the 5 GHz band, use a wide channel (40 MHz) if possible.
