SAFETY MESSAGE TO INSTALLERS
Peoples lives depend on your safe installation of our products. It is important to follow all instructions shipped with the products. This device is to be installed by a trained electrician who is thoroughly familiar with the National Electric Code and will follow the NEC guidelines as well as local codes.
The selection of the mounting location for the device, its controls and routing of the wiring is to be accomplished under the direction of the Facilities Engineer and the Safety Engineer. In addition, listed below are some other important safety instructions and precautions you should follow:
- This unit must be installed by a qualified electrician in accordance with NFPA 72, and national and local Electrical and Fire Codes, under the direction of the authority having jurisdiction.
- Read and understand all instructions before installing or operating this equipment.
- Consult the authority having jurisdiction in your area regarding the proper use and installation of this product.
- Do not connect this unit to the system when power is on.
- All effective warning speakers produce loud sounds which may cause, in certain situations, permanent hearing loss. You should take appropriate precautions such as wearing hearing protection.
- All effective warning speakers produce loud sounds, which may cause, in certain situations, permanent hearing loss. The device should be installed far enough away from potential listeners to limit their exposure while still maintaining its effectiveness. The OSHA Code of Federal Regulations 1910.95 Noise Standard provides guidelines which may be used regarding permissible noise exposure levels.
- After installation, test the sound system to ensure proper operation.
- After installation and completion of initial system test, a program for periodic testing of this device must be established. Refer to NFPA 72G, local Fire Codes and the authority having jurisdiction for this information.
- Show these instructions to your Safety Engineer and then file them in a safe place and refer to them when maintaining and/or reinstalling the unit.
- Establish a procedure to routinely check the sound system for proper activation and operation.
A.General.
The AM25CK or AM70CK is a transformer-coupled interface from an audio amplifier, such as Federal Signal's SelectTone system, to an amplified speaker (Models 50GC, 300, 300GC, 300GCX, and 300X). The unit is available in 25 Vrms (AM25CK) and 70 Vrms (AM70CK) versions.
Approval Agency Listings (AM25CK and AM70CK only):
Underwriters laboratories Inc.—Reference the installation instruction manual of the amplified speaker device for the speaker/connector card system file number.
Canadian Standards Association—When used with amplified speaker Models 300X, 300GCX, 302GCX, & 302X, all tone cards & connector cards:
File LR11170.
Canadian Standards Association—When used with amplified speaker Models 300, 300GC, 302GC, & 50GC, all tone cards & connector cards: File LR5835.
B. Unpacking.
After unpacking the card, examine it carefully for possible damage that may have occurred in transit. If equipment has been damaged, immediately file a claim with the carrier stating the extent of damage. Carefully check all shipping labels and tags for special instructions before removing or destroying them.
C.Installation.
The installation instructions shipped with the amplified speakers used with these cards provide installation location and wiring instructions to complete the installation.
DANGER
To avoid electrical shock, do not attempt installation of cards when power is on.
WARNING
Property damage, serious injury, or death could occur if independent audio conductors are terminated together; both wires of the same polarity must be used as two separate connections. NFPA 72 requires that the wires be terminated independently to provide electrical supervision of the connection.
NOTE-SYSTEM DESIGNERS & INSTALLERS
The AM25CK and AM70CK connector cards are NOT polarity sensitive, but polarity must be observed when placing speakers in close proximity to each other. See figure 2 for wiring. The nominal impedance for both units is equal to, or greater than, 100K ohms.
- Remove the amplified speaker's cover as described in the appropriate amplified speaker instructions.
- Plug the desired connector card into the socket in the amplified speaker.
- Connect the white leads from the connector card to the audio inputs and outputs. When wiring the connector card, observe the input and output sides as marked on the label.
NOTE
Check with authority having jurisdiction for proper application of EOL resistor and power supervision relay required (see figure 2).
- Replace the cover as described in the amplified speaker instructions.
D. Testing/Operating.
WARNING
Under certain conditions the devices in which these cards are installed are capable of producing sounds loud enough to cause hearing damage. Adequate hearing protection should be worn if standing within close proximity to device while testing.
Recommendations in the OSHA Sound Level Standard (29 CFR 1910) should not be exceeded.
Test the installed cards as described in the appropriate amplifier installation instructions.
NOTE
Audio wires should be sized properly by your licensed installation electrician for your service application. This cable requires a twisted shielded pair with an 18AWG mimum and should produce no more than 15% signal loss over the length of the cable run.
E. Service/Maintenance.
WARNING
Unauthorized repair/servicing of the unit may result in degradation of performance and/or property damage, serious injury, or death to you or others. If a malfunctioning unit is encountered, do not attempt any field repair/retrofit of parts.
Federal Signal will service your equipment or provide technical assistance with any problems that cannot be handled locally.
Any units returned to Federal Signal for service, inspection, or repair, must be accompanied by a Return Material Authorization. This R.M.A. can be obtained from the local Distributor or Manufacturer's Representative.
At this time a brief explanation of the service requested or the nature of the malfunction, should be given.
