Frequently Asked Questions - OG0028 IFM

How to adjust sensitivity for static objects?
Press the push button for about 2 seconds until the LED flashes. When the LED flashes slowly, the device is in programming mode. Place the object in the detection zone and press once (first measurement). Remove the object and press once more (second measurement). The LED turns off during each measurement. If programming is successful, the device returns to normal mode. You can also reverse the order (measure without object first, then with).
How to adjust sensitivity for moving objects?
Activate programming mode as above. Let at least two objects pass through the detection zone for about 1 second (first measurement). The LED turns off. Once the LED flashes slowly, repeat the operation (second measurement). If programming is successful, the device returns to normal mode. If the object and background signals are too similar, the LED flashes for 2 seconds after step 3 and the sensitivity remains unchanged.
How to lock or unlock the device?
To lock, press the push button for 10 seconds. The red LED flashes quickly after 2 seconds, then flashes slowly for 8 seconds, then turns off: the device is locked. To unlock, press again for 10 seconds; the LED turns off after this delay and the lock is canceled.
What does the LED flashing mean?
A fast flashing LED (in programming) indicates that the device is entering programming mode. A slow flashing LED means the device is in programming mode and ready for measurements. In normal operation, an LED flashing at 1 Hz indicates an unsafe zone (weak signal). In light-on mode, LED on = safe zone, off = object detected. In dark-on mode, the opposite.
What type of fuse to use?
It is recommended to insert a miniature fuse in accordance with the device's data sheet. The instructions do not specify exact characteristics, but in case of a short circuit, check proper operation after replacement.
How to clean the lenses?
The lenses should be cleaned with a soft cloth to remove any dirt. Do not use solvents or harsh products that could damage the plastic lenses.
What are the available operating modes?
The device can operate in light-on mode (normally closed) or dark-on mode (normally open), depending on the version. In light-on mode, the output is switched when the receiver receives light; in dark-on mode, the output is switched when the beam is interrupted.
What to do if programming fails?
If after step 3 the LED flashes for about 2 seconds, this means that programming is not possible (signals too similar). The device then returns to normal mode without modifying the sensitivity. Check alignment and detection conditions.
How to electrically connect the device?
Before any connection, disconnect the installation from power. The cable has two wires: BN (brown) for positive supply (+) and BU (blue) for ground (-). Refer to the diagram on page 17 of the manual or the label on the device.
What is the maximum detection range?
The range (r) is indicated on the device label. By default, the device is set to maximum range at the factory (plug and play). For optimal range, precisely align the emitter towards the receiver so that the light spot hits the receiver lens.

Function and features

The through-beam sensor detects objects and materials without contact and indicates their presence by a switched signal.

Range (r): see type label.

Electrical connection

IFM OG0028 - Electrical connection - 1

Isolate power, then connect the unit (see page 17 or type label).

Core colours: BN = brown, BU = blue.

Output function light-on ( _- ) or dark-on mode ( _L ) depending on the unit (see type label).

Note: insert a miniature fuse according to the technical data sheet.

Recommendation: check the unit for reliable function after a short circuit.

Installation

receiver push button LED red transmitter LED green

Fix the receiver (type OGE-...) in position.

Align the transmitter (type OGS-...) towards the receiver and tighten in the same way.

Maximum range is only possible with precise alignment.

NB: Commissioning

The through-beam sensor is supplied ready to operate (plug and play) set at the max. sensing range. This is sufficient if the through-beam sensor can operate with maximum excess gain (highest contrast). The following setting procedures should only be necessary in less straightforward applications, for example if partly transparent objects must be detected.

Setting of the sensitivity with stationary objects

1Activate the programming mode of the unit.IFM OG0028 - Setting of the sensitivity with stationary objects - 1Press for about 2s until the LED flashes.
The LED starts to flash rapidly. The unit is in the programming mode as soon as the LED flashes slowly
2Set the sensitivitywithobject.IFM OG0028 - Setting of the sensitivity with stationary objects - 2Press once.
The LED goes out during the first measuring process. As soon as the LED flashes slowly, the unit is in the programming mode again.
3Set the sensitivitywithoutobject.IFM OG0028 - Setting of the sensitivity with stationary objects - 3Press once.
The LED goes out during the second measuring process. If the programming was successful, the unit is now in the normal operating mode.

You can also proceed in reverse order: first setting without the object, then with the object.

IFM OG0028 - Setting of the sensitivity with stationary objects - 4

If the setting of the sensitivity is not possible (e.g. object signal and background signal are about the same), the LED flashes after step 3 for approx. 2s. The unit then passes into the operating mode with the sensitivity being unchanged.

Setting of the sensitivity with moving objects

1Activate the programming mode of the unit.IFM OG0028 - Setting of the sensitivity with moving objects - 1Press for about 2s until the red LED flashes.
The LED starts to flash rapidly. The unit is in the programming mode as soon as the LED flashes slowly.
2During the measurement (approx. 1s) allow at least two objects to move through the sensing area of the lens.IFM OG0028 - Setting of the sensitivity with moving objects - 2
The LED goes out during the first measuring process. As soon as the LED flashes slowly, the unit is in the programming mode again.
3During the measurement (approx. 1s) allow at least two objects to move through the sensing area of the lens.IFM OG0028 - Setting of the sensitivity with moving objects - 3
The LED goes out during the second measuring process. If the programming was successful, the unit is now in the normal operating mode.

IFM OG0028 - Setting of the sensitivity with moving objects - 4

If the setting of the sensitivity is not possible (e.g. object signal and background signal are about the same), the LED flashes after step 3 for approx. 2s. The unit then passes into the operating mode with the sensitivity being unchanged.

IFM OG0028 - Setting of the sensitivity with moving objects - 5

If the setting button is not activated for 15 minutes during the programming process, the unit passes automatically into the operating mode with the sensitivity being unchanged.

The output of the unit is switched during the whole programming operation!

Setting of the maximum sensitivity

  • Go into the programming mode (step 1).
  • Interrupt the light beam.
  • Press the setting button twice (see steps 2 and 3).

Locking / Unlocking

IFM OG0028 - Setting of the maximum sensitivity - 1Press for 10s.IFM OG0028 - Setting of the maximum sensitivity - 2The red LED starts to flash rapidly after 2s.After that the LED flashes slowly for approx. 8s. When the LED goes out the unit is locked.
IFM OG0028 - Setting of the maximum sensitivity - 3Press for 10s.IFM OG0028 - Setting of the maximum sensitivity - 4After 10s the LED goes out, locking is cancelled.

Operation

Check the safe functioning of the diffuse reflection sensor. Display by LED and by the output.

Units with light-on mode (normally closed)

The receiver receives the transmitter light LED is on, output switched: no object detected (certain range).

The receiver receives the transmitter light → LED flashes (1 Hz), output switched,: no object detected (uncertain range).

The receiver receives no transmitter light LED off, output not switched: object detected.

Units with dark-on mode (normally open)

The receiver receives no transmitter light LED is on, output switched: object pre-sent (certain range).

The receiver receives very little transmitter light → LED flashes (1 Hz), output switched: object present (uncertain range).

The receiver receives the transmitter light LED off, output not switched: no object detected.

Maintenance

Keep the lens of the sensor free from soiling. For cleaning do not use any solvents or cleaning agents which could damage the plastic lenses.
