Frequently Asked Questions - Tamina BA2003 ADE

Why does my scale display 'Lo'?
The 'Lo' display indicates the batteries are drained. Replace them with two new LR03 (AAA) batteries, respecting polarity.
How to change the unit of measurement (kg, lb, st:lb)?
Press the Unit button on the back of the scale several times. The unit changes with each press: kg → lb → st:lb.
Can I use the scale if I am pregnant?
No, the scale is not suitable for pregnant women or people with a pacemaker, undergoing dialysis, suffering from edema, or with implants. Consult your doctor if in doubt.
How to perform a full body analysis?
For a body analysis, you must first enter your personal data (height, age, gender) into a memory. Then step barefoot onto the scale, each foot on a sensor, and remain still. The results (weight, fat, water, muscle, bone, metabolism, BMI) are displayed successively.
What does the 'Err' display mean?
'Err' can indicate incorrect foot positioning (they must be on the sensors), feet too dry, a fat percentage below 4%, or incorrect personal data.
What is the accuracy of the scale?
The accuracy is 2% +/- 100 g for weight measurement. For body analysis, accuracy depends on following instructions (bare feet slightly moist, immobility).
How to clean the scale?
Wipe the scale with a slightly damp soft cloth. Never use corrosive or abrasive detergents. Occasionally disinfect the weighing surface and sensors with a suitable product.
The scale displays 'C', what should I do?
The 'C' display means the measured weight is less than 3 kg. Step onto the scale normally; if the problem persists, check the batteries.
How to replace a used memory?
To replace a memory (e.g., P01), press SET, select the memory with ▲/▼, then enter the new data (gender, age, height) following the same process. The old data is overwritten.
What is the operating principle of body analysis?
The scale uses BIA (Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis) technology. A very weak and harmless electrical current passes through the body. Resistance varies by tissue (muscle = low resistance, fat = high resistance). By combining this measurement with your personal data, the scale calculates the various indicators.

Intended use

The bathroom scale is designed for the weighing of people in the home. It is not suitable for use in clinics, medical practices, etc. Likewise, the body analysis function is designed only for private use. The scales are not suitable for use in the professional sporting sphere. The maximum carrying capacity of 180kg must not be exceeded.

Do not use these scales if you ...

  • ... are pregnant,
    have a cardiac pacemaker,
  • ... are a dialysis patient,
    ... suffer from oedema,
  • ... have implants, e.g. artificial limbs, metal plates, etc.

If in doubt, consult your GP.

Safety

  • This product may be used by children aged 8 and above, as well as by persons with reduced physical, sensory, or mental capacities or lacking experience and knowledge if they are supervised or have been instructed in the safe use of the product and understand the risks that may arise.
Children must not play with the product.
  • Cleaning and user maintenance must not be carried out by children, unless they are 8 years of age or older and are being supervised.
  • Batteries, when swallowed, can be life-threatening. You should therefore keep the batteries and scale out of reach of small children. If a battery has been swallowed, medical assistance must be sought immediately.

DANGER for children

  • Keep packaging material away from children. There is a risk of choking if swallowed. Also pay attention that children do not pull the packaging material over their heads.

RISK of fire/burning and/or explosion

  • There is a risk of explosion if the battery is replaced improperly. Replace the battery using only the same or an equivalent type of battery. Pay attention to the "Technical data".
  • Batteries must not be recharged, reactivated by other means, dismantled, thrown into fire, or short-circuited.
  • Avoid contact with skin, eyes, and mucosa. If contact is made with the battery fluid, rinse the affected areas immediately with plenty of clean water and see a doctor straight away.

WARNING of risk of injury

  • Do not step onto the outer edge of any one side of the scale. Risk of tipping!
  • Do not step onto the scale with wet feet or when its surface is damp. Risk of slipping!
  • The weighing surface is made of glass. If you fall down, there is a risk of the glass breaking and thus a risk of injury from glass splinters.

BEWARE of material damage

  • Place the scale on a stable, even surface.

  • Do not overload the scale. Pay attention to the "Technical data". Place yourself on the scale exclusively for weighing purposes.

  • Protect the scale from strong shocks and vibrations.
  • Remove the batteries from the scale when they are depleted or when you are no longer using the scale. You will thus avoid damage that may result from leakage of battery acid.
  • When inserting and changing batteries, pay attention to the correct polarity (+/-) .
  • Do not subject the batteries to any extreme conditions, by – for example – storing them on radiators or under direct sunlight. Increased risk of leakage!
  • Clean the battery and device contacts, as needed, before inserting the battery.

  • Press repeatedly the Unit button on the back of the scale. Note the display.

Setting up the scale

  • Place the scale on an even, firm and dry surface. Do not place the scale on a carpet

This is how your body analyser scales work

Your new body analyser scales work using so-called BIA-technology (Bioelectric Impedance Analysis). This involves an undetectable, completely harmless and weak current flowing through your body.

The measurement takes place via sensors that are mounted on the weighing surface.

  • The current flows relatively unhindered through the fluid contained in muscle mass.
  • In fat mass, the resistance is greater. This resistance is measured.

Together with your personal data (sex, weight, age, and height), the scales calculate the following information about your body composition:

Weight
Body fat proportion in %
Body water in %
- Muscle mass in %
Bone mass in %
- Daily basal metabolic rate in kcal (energy requirement)
Body mass index (BMI)

The scales are equipped with 12 memory cells in total.

Measurement errors

Measurement or calculation errors may arise for the following groups of people during the body analysis:

People who ....

... spend 10 hours or more per week playing sport,

... are professional athletes, bodybuilders or endurance athletes,

... are over 85 years old,

... are less than 10 years old.

The "normal weighing function" (see next chapter) is not affected by these considerations.

Measuring your weight

ADE Tamina BA2003 - Measuring your weight - 1

For normal weighing - without body analysis - you do not have to input any data.

  • Position yourself on the scale. Stand still and do not hold on to anything.

Shortly thereafter the measured weight flashes on the display in the selected unit of measurement. A few seconds after you step off the weighing surface, the scale will switch off automatically.

Entering personal data

ADE Tamina BA2003 - Entering personal data - 1

Proceed uninterrupted when entering data. Otherwise, the scale will turn off after a short time to save energy. Then press SET to return to the input mode.

  1. Press SET.

For example, "P00" flashes on the display.

  1. Use the or button to select the desired memory cell, e.g. "P01".
  2. Press SET.

or flashes on the display.

  1. Using the or the button, choose your sex: for male, or for female.
  2. Press SET.

The preset value for that age blinks on the display.

  1. Using the or the button, enter your age.
  2. Press SET.

The preset value for body height flashes on the display.

  2. In doing so, ensure each foot is placed on a sensor.

  3. There must be no contact between your feet, your legs, your calves, or your thighs. Otherwise, the measurement will be imprecise.

Shortly afterwards, the measured weight is displayed flashing. Remain standing still. Your measured values will then be shown to you repeatedly on the display:

Indicator Meaning

  1. Your body weight in the set unit of measurement
  2. FAT Your body fat proportion in % with simultaneous evaluation display at the bottom of the display:

Underfat = too little body fat

Healthy = normal / healthy

Overfat = too much body fat

Obese = obese

3.WATER Your body water in %
4. MUSCLE Your muscle mass in %
5. BONE Your bone mass in %
6. KCAL Your basal metabolism in kcal
7. BMI Your body mass index

Weighing tips

  • Weighing for the body analysis can only be carried out barefoot. In doing so, your feet should only be lightly moistened. Completely dry feet can lead to false results, since the electrical conductivity will then poor.
  • During the measuring process, stand still and do not hold onto anything.

  • Do not weigh yourself directly after unusual physical exertion.

  • Do not weigh yourself immediately after standing up. Wait approximately fifteen minutes. In this time, the water is able to distribute through your body.

  • Always attempt to weigh yourself at the same time, in order to obtain comparable values.

Notes on the ascertained values

The proportion of body fat gives the amount of fat as a percentage of the total weight of the body. A blanket recommendation for this value does not exist, since this depends significantly on sex (because of different physiques) and age.

Body fat is vital for day-to-day body function. It protects organs, cushions joints, regulates body temperature, stores vitamins, and serves the body as an energy store.

For women, a body fat proportion between 10% and 13% is essential; for men, between 2% and 5% with the exception of competitive sportsmen.

The proportion of body fat is not an unambiguous indicator of health. Excessive body weight and a too-high proportion of body fat are being linked with the appearance of many diseases of affluence such as diabetes, cardiovascular illnesses, etc.

Physical inactivity and poor diet are often triggers for these diseases. There is a clear causal connection between excess weight and physical inactivity.

A considerable part of the human body consists of water. This body water is variably distributed throughout the whole body. Lean muscle tissue contains about 75% water, blood around 83% water, body fat approx. 25% water and bones have a water proportion of about 22% .

In men approx. 60% of body mass consists of water.
- In women, that value lies around 55% (determined by a higher proportion of body fat).

Approx. two thirds of this total body water are stored in the cells and therefore called intracellular water. The other third is extracellular water.

Age Women
< 30Fat % Body water water indication
4.0 – 20.5% 66.0 –54.7% Underfat
20.6 – 25.0% 54.6 –51.6% Healthy

AgeMen
< 30Fat % Body water % Display indication
4.0 – 15.5% 66.0 –58.1% Underfat

24.1 – 28.5% 52.2 –49.2% Overfat
28.6 – 80.0% 49.1 –13.8% Obese

For muscle mass there are no universal standard values.

Body mass index (BMI)

The BMI indicates the ratio of height to weight and is only an approximate standard value. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), an index of 18.6 to 25 is optimal.

Since men typically have a higher percentage of muscle mass in the total body mass than women do, the age and gender play an important role in interpreting the BMI.

BMI (kg/m2) Body weight
< 18.5 Underweight (Underfat)
18.6 - 25 Normal weight (Healthy)
25.1 - 30 Overweight (Overfat)
30.1 and above Obesity (Obese)
